00:00This attack at the White House Correspondence Dinner was the third assassination attempt against Donald Trump.
00:04It's always shocking when something like this happens, happened to me a little bit, and that never changes.
00:11This latest incident is part of a disturbing uptick in political violence in the United States.
00:16Political scientist Robert Pape explains why.
00:19There are tens of millions of Americans to support violence, to remove President Trump from the presidency,
00:27and there's tens of millions of Americans who support violence to keep Donald Trump as president.
00:34This massive support is what encourages these radical individuals to act out in these particular ways.
00:42In 2025 alone, attackers targeted these political figures.
00:46Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was shot dead at a campus debate in Utah.
00:50Minnesota Democratic Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in their home.
00:53The same gunman shot Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman nine times.
00:58He survived.
00:59Two Israeli embassy staffers were killed after leaving an event at a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C.,
01:04and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's house was set on fire.
01:07But it's not just the fault of a radicalized population, according to Pape.
01:11He says it's the politicians themselves who are leaning into polarizing rhetoric for the sake of votes.
01:16That's the problem.
01:17They're getting both sides to actually jointly accept responsibility for their behavior.
01:22No, because they want to run on it.
01:25They want to use it.
01:26Whether they admit it or not, they're running for office in November.
01:30Already, this is turning into a political football.
01:33Who can get squeezed the most votes out of this is what's driving this whole thing.
01:38And we just got to stop pretending it's something else.
