00:01The hunt is on for Scotland's Home of the Year.
00:04Wow, this is gorgeous.
00:07Interior designers Anna Campbell-Jones and Banjo Beale,
00:10along with architect Danny Campbell, are scouring the company.
00:15Yes.
00:16Soak up the sun like a lizard.
00:18They're judging properties on architectural merit,
00:22creative design and personal style.
00:25All our senses are alive.
00:26But they're also looking for those special qualities that make a house a home.
00:37Today our judges are winding their way west,
00:41starting with a flamboyant and fun family home in Eyre.
00:45Georgian Town House is home to Janie, Michael and daughter Daisy,
00:49the youngest of their three kids,
00:51along with dogs Poppy and Bertie,
00:54and cats Fred and Elvis.
00:57The house was built in 1821.
01:00We moved in in July of 2021, so it was exactly 200 years old.
01:05And we wanted to put a bit of soul back into the house.
01:08It had been a care home in the 60s and then sold on and became an office.
01:12So we tried to make it a home, you know, back to a home again,
01:15and get it with a bit of humour as well, I think.
01:18I think the style's a combination of the period of the house and the items that we had.
01:27We could have got rid of all our furniture and bought entirely new
01:29and bought old Georgian styley styley,
01:31but we'd much rather sort of have a mix and a match.
01:34The house has got beautiful features and it's just kind of complementing them.
01:38I'm proud of the fact that we haven't just ripped things out for the sake of it,
01:42that we've tried to reuse a lot of the things that were here.
01:46On the ground floor, there's a TV room, snug, a drawing room, dining room with its own bar
01:53and a large dining kitchen with views to the garden.
01:58Upstairs, there are five bedrooms, three with en-suites, a dressing room and the main bathroom.
02:06So this is my favourite room in the house because I absolutely love to run the bath,
02:10lie back, relax and look round about me and just think,
02:13how lucky am I to be able to have a bath in a room like this?
02:17Armed with only some basic intel about the house and the homeowners,
02:21the judges now get to lay eyes on Georgian townhouse for the first time.
02:26That's a hefty lump of house, isn't it?
02:28Yeah. Wow.
02:29It's like a wedding cake.
02:30It is like a wedding cake.
02:32It's like marzipan front, little tasty trinkets all over it.
02:37Yummy.
02:38Straight away I'm noticing these beautiful old lanterns either side of the front door
02:42and that glazing above. It's very, very elegant original details.
02:46Well, these Georgian detached homes have beautiful bones, don't they?
02:49But the thing is, how have they reimagined it inside and made it their own?
02:52Well, let's go and have a look.
03:02Ooh. Smells good.
03:05It does smell good, doesn't it? Doesn't it? Strong smell game.
03:10Lots of rooms. We've taken two steps and we've already passed two really big ones.
03:15There's also two corridors either side as well. There's a lot of doors, a lot of options.
03:19I mean, how stressful. These people have so many decisions to make every day.
03:23Which way to go? Which way should we go?
03:26Straight away. That way. That's cool in us.
03:32Ooh.
03:34Beautiful colour.
03:36Zingy.
03:36I love a bit of yellow too.
03:38Yeah.
03:39I don't know if I've been brave enough to paint a whole room yellow yet.
03:42Yeah.
03:42Well, here's an example for you to follow.
03:46That curved bay window is lovely, isn't it?
03:48It really brings the garden into this space.
03:50There's lots of paintings on the walls, but also paintings leaning up against the wall.
03:54Maybe I think you'd come in here to talk about art.
03:56You would.
03:57I think they've taken some of the colours from the paintings as well, haven't they?
04:01I think that's inspired the scheme.
04:04And a kitty cat.
04:05Hello kitty.
04:06Hey girl.
04:06Oh look, our fourth little judge on Shottie.
04:17Oh wow.
04:19Oh look at this.
04:22Drink anyone?
04:23Hey.
04:25Hey.
04:26Hey.
04:26Hey.
04:27Hey.
04:28Yeah.
04:29This is a sociable home, isn't it?
04:32Look at that.
04:33Gym collection as well.
04:34It's definitely a space for celebrating, isn't it?
04:37There's gold features absolutely everywhere, including some gilding on that fireplace, which
04:42is quite a sweet move.
04:43They've really made the most of all that space as well.
04:45They managed to cram in the dining table and the little kind of like smoking chairs and
04:51the barn.
04:51They've got a lot going on here.
05:00Oh.
05:03Wow.
05:04We descend into a palatial countryside kitchen.
05:09It's a very farmhouse, isn't it?
05:11We're open to the garden.
05:12We've got these exposed beams a bit of height.
05:14Hanging baskets.
05:16Plenty chandelier.
05:18Plentalabra.
05:20Plentalabra.
05:20Plentalabra.
05:22I'm TM-ing that.
05:23This feels like where you would spend pretty much all of your time.
05:26You've got a comfy seat by the French windows overlooking the grass.
05:30You've got a sort of more informal place to eat.
05:33And then, obviously, the spectacular kitchen.
05:37Nice bit of granite.
05:40Isn't it?
05:40It is.
05:41That's a slab right there.
05:46What a beautiful staircase.
05:48Yeah.
05:49I do like a dark hall.
05:56There's the heart.
05:57Ooh.
05:58This is lovely.
05:59Wowzers.
06:02You don't often find the favourite spot in the bathroom.
06:05But this is quite a bathroom with this tropical wallpaper.
06:09Incredibly high and very gold ceiling.
06:13They're not taking themselves too seriously.
06:16They've got the parrots with the crowns.
06:19There's the elephant holding the toilet roll.
06:20It's the first bit of real escapism that we've seen in this home.
06:24I think that's why we're getting quite excited.
06:26And I bet it's their favourite room in the house because they went for it.
06:30Mm-hm.
06:30And there's little tiny bits of quirky things dotted all over.
06:34So maybe they should just go for it in the rest of the house.
06:48Oh, wow.
06:50Pretty and pink.
06:52It's like being inside a marshmallow, isn't it?
06:54Wow.
06:55Look at that.
06:56Party in the bedroom.
06:58Disco ball.
06:59You know, it's such a big space in here.
07:01I do think they probably could have squeezed in a dressing space.
07:05I feel like this massive bed could have been turned around facing that bay.
07:09You can come in behind it, have some additional storage.
07:11What's through there?
07:12Ooh.
07:14Oh, it's a little Jack and Jill bathroom that comes off the hallway.
07:17Oh, right.
07:18OK.
07:18I think as we've journeyed through this home,
07:20you can see how it's been chopped up so many times over the years.
07:23I think that's probably why they've ended up with the space that's become a Jack and Jill bathroom.
07:32But will the judges share the same opinion of Georgian Townhouse?
07:35One mark will be held back till they've seen all three homes when their combined scores will be revealed.
07:43Well, this is an absolute beast of a home.
07:47And it typifies the idea that home is a work in progress.
07:51I feel like this home could be a life's work.
07:54There are so many spaces to consider in this home,
07:58some of which have been really successfully resolved with quite a lot of fun and frivolity.
08:03And that's the direction that I think this home should go in.
08:07I'm going to give this home an eight.
08:11I think the owners have done a fabulous job bringing this home back to life.
08:16They've really spiced it up.
08:17They've got the turmeric walls, the pink palace bedroom.
08:21It's a fun house and they've really gone for it in some spaces like the bathroom.
08:25And they've been very brave and bold in some of their choices.
08:29Maybe not what I would have done, but I have to celebrate their party spirit.
08:34I'm giving this home an eight.
08:40This home has lovely bones.
08:42It's on a great plot with loads of space, large rooms, height and loads of natural light.
08:48For me, the layout still carried a lot of traces of its institutional past.
08:53The compartmentalised rooms and the long corridors.
08:57They've done a superb job on the cosmetics here.
09:00I think it could maybe be done with a little bit of surgery.
09:08Next up in the west, it's a semi-detached property dating from the early 1900s in Dumbrec,
09:15on the south side of Glasgow.
09:17Artisan House is home to Fawzia and Sajid.
09:20And creating this vibrant family home has been a labour of love for Fawzia.
09:27I moved into this house actually eight years ago.
09:30I actually spent ten years in Pakistan with my husband.
09:34And when I came back, I bought a whole container full of my carved furniture from Pakistan.
09:40So I looked for a house that would suit that kind of mix of old with the Mughal.
09:47And it just so happened this was absolutely perfect for what I was looking for.
09:52It's got beautiful original features to it.
09:55So I've taken two cultures and tried to kind of blend them together.
09:59I love patina, vintage.
10:04I'm really proud of some of my artisan mirrors, the carved ones.
10:08I always imagined the workmanship and hours of labour have gone into that.
10:16My mum ran quite a well-known fabric shop, the first one of its kind in Glasgow.
10:20So we were always around silks, fabrics.
10:25And to be honest, my house is a reflection of probably that whole past.
10:32Downstairs, the layout includes two living rooms, an office space and kitchen.
10:39And on the first floor, there are three bedrooms and the main bathroom,
10:43with another bedroom in an attic conversion above.
10:46So this is my favourite spot in my home because I love to come down in the morning,
10:52grab myself a cup of coffee and I love to look out on this beautiful view
10:56in front of my living room and just think about the day ahead.
11:02And it's just a very, very peaceful place.
11:05But how will the judges respond to their first view of Artisan House?
11:10Oh, kink my neck to look up.
11:14Very tall.
11:15Isn't it?
11:16Beautiful stained glass window there.
11:18Stunning.
11:19All the windows are lovely and big, aren't they?
11:21I love it when you've got a red sandstone and a blonde sandstone next to each other.
11:26It's a really good way to date the buildings,
11:27because they started using the red at the turn of the 20th century.
11:31OK, historian.
11:32I know.
11:33Well done.
11:34Every day is a school day.
11:35Yeah.
11:36All right, let's put the pedal to the metal.
11:39Ah.
11:44Oh, look at this mosaic floor.
11:46Oh, wow.
11:47That's nice.
11:48That is gorgeous.
11:50And the little golden tone picked up in the sunflowers and the frame of the mirror.
11:55This is very rich, isn't it?
11:57Yes.
11:57All these jewel tones, the rich timber.
12:02Timber staircase is lovely.
12:03Some stunning art as well.
12:06They've really invested in this place as well.
12:07I think when you've got a new classical property, you can't just stick the normal bog standard white radiators on.
12:13OK, which way will the voyage take us?
12:16Yes.
12:17Oh, that's from there.
12:24Oh, there's the heart.
12:25Ah, wow.
12:28Go on, Anna, squeeze in.
12:29All right.
12:30What?
12:31I can really see why this is the heart of their home.
12:33It's such a respectful place.
12:36It's a lovely, calm room.
12:38The light's really beautiful.
12:39I think because the home is so elevated,
12:41it almost feels like being on the first floor, even though we're just inside the front door.
12:45Yeah.
12:46All our senses are alive, isn't it?
12:48And all the mixed metals with the wood, with the gold, with the teak.
12:53There's a lovely play in here with all of that, isn't it?
12:56It feels very evocative.
12:58It's taking me to kind of India, Pakistan, all of those fabulous, colourful, rich, cultural places.
13:06Like this incredible light.
13:08I mean, that's not the sort of pendant light you would normally see hanging from a ceiling rose in a
13:13house like this.
13:14But it just looks so perfect there.
13:16Yeah.
13:16I think that juxtaposition of the two cultures colliding works really well.
13:21There's lots of places to sit as well, but each seat has a part to play.
13:26That would be quite difficult to get out of, though, that one.
13:28Well, that's perfect for you, Anna.
13:38I know.
13:39Oh.
13:40Oh, this is gorgeous.
13:41I love this.
13:42Yeah.
13:43It's so important to have a waiting area next to your desk so you can build some tension before you
13:47summon your council.
13:48It's quite intimidating.
13:49You can imagine telling off your children.
13:52But it's very calm, isn't it?
13:53I mean, we've come from kind of quite a colourful, eclectic space, and this feels really grounded with the dark
14:00wood and the white and just little touches of blue.
14:02You could really focus on your work in here.
14:04It's got a split personality.
14:06You've got the dark timber and you've got a lovely little light and bright white scene there, which you're perfectly
14:13coordinated with.
14:14I'm loving it.
14:14Yes.
14:15It's basically just me.
14:16Yes.
14:21Oh, look at this.
14:23It's like painted glass.
14:25Gorgeous.
14:33Oh, wow.
14:37This is dreamy.
14:39Yeah.
14:40And there's so many mirrors and there's crystals and everything's kind of shimmering.
14:44They've really colour drenched it in white.
14:46It's about building up all the different textures, isn't it?
14:49Absolutely.
14:49Because you've got this sort of white stained wooden table.
14:52You've got the marble.
14:54You've got this upcycled sideboard.
14:57It's all like white on white on white.
14:58It's tonal.
14:59I think it's been pulled together really cleverly.
15:02Cost effective too.
15:04Looks like they're vinyl wrapped, the bench top.
15:07Lots of secondhand finds in here.
15:10Really has come together probably over time.
15:13Mm.
15:14Yeah.
15:14And there's like kind of fun and frivolity, isn't there?
15:16Yeah.
15:17I mean, three crystal chandeliers and a bust.
15:20Job done.
15:21Yeah.
15:24Ooh.
15:25This is big staircase.
15:27Yeah.
15:28There's the window.
15:32Ooh.
15:35This is lovely and bright.
15:36This feels like a luxury hotel, doesn't it?
15:39Yes.
15:39By the sea, palm trees outside.
15:43There's such lovely light in here as well.
15:45And I think every surface has a mirror which is just reflecting it and emphasising it.
15:48Of course you love mirrors.
15:53They're double rugging too.
15:55Well, it kind of zones the areas, doesn't it?
15:57This is like the foot of the bed and then that's your dressing table at the window for the perfect
16:02light for putting your makeup on.
16:03Is that good?
16:04Do you want natural light when you're putting your face on?
16:06Yes.
16:06If you're feeling brave.
16:08Okay.
16:09Candle light for me.
16:17There's a calmness, a gentleness and a serenity about this home that I think is achieved through using lots of
16:26different textures but all in kind of very light and warm tones.
16:30Something I really notice when walking through this home is the peaceful coexistence of British, Victorian and Edwardian pieces and
16:39architecture and South Asian influence.
16:42It just creates a really harmonious, cohesive scheme.
16:47I'm going to give this home a nine.
16:52This home felt like a really confident fusion, a classic Glasgow sandstone villa layered with South Asian influence.
17:01The direct contrast in styles and cultures is really addictive, like salt and caramel or chilli and lime and when
17:08it works it's really delicious.
17:10I think a little bit of editing could really highlight the interplay and make the whole experience even more impactful.
17:17I'm giving this home an eight.
17:22I love a home that celebrates the richness of life and where we've been and where we're going and I
17:28think this home tells a really lovely story about the homeowners and the textures, the calm colours, the collection of
17:37beautiful objects.
17:38It's all coming together perfectly.
17:46Finally in the West is a semi-detached house in the village of Kilmacomb in Inverclyde.
17:52Originally built in 1890, Wendy and Scott have made the Victorian sandstone villa an ever evolving home as their family
18:01has grown to include kids Hunter and Summer and Dog Tux.
18:05At first we just decorated but then over time we felt like we wanted to grow the space so we've
18:11done a full ground floor wraparound extension.
18:15I think initially we were looking for a turnkey solution and then costs kind of came back and was a
18:20bit of a reality check so we ended up doing quite a lot ourselves didn't we?
18:24Yeah, like learning covers, late nights, playlists.
18:28I know.
18:29Have a bit of fun.
18:29And it hasn't fallen apart yet.
18:31No.
18:32I think the main priority is just a space that we can all feel at home, be comfortable, that the
18:38kids can play, that they can jump on the sofa, climb over the walls.
18:43Like just have a space to grow up in and also we've made spaces where we feel like as they
18:49get older we have these extra spaces like the front room that we can escape to when they're bringing friends
18:54around here.
18:54So hopefully we've future proofed it.
18:59This ever growing happy home includes a traditional entrance hallway, sitting room, spacious open plan kitchen and dining area with
19:08bespoke sunken family sofa and access to the back garden.
19:14Upstairs there are three bedrooms and a family bathroom.
19:18My favourite spot in the home is this 12-seater sofa because we built it ourselves.
19:23I'm super proud of it.
19:24We've got the views out to the garden.
19:26It's really comfy.
19:27The kids are always launching themselves over the wall, jumping on the sofa.
19:30It's just a really fun family space.
19:39But will all their hard work impress the judges?
19:46This is a bonny house, isn't it?
19:49Yeah, it's like a perfect little postcard, isn't it?
19:51But I really like this totally blacked out little side extension for the garage.
19:56But it looks like it goes quite far back as well.
19:58I wonder what else they've got hidden in there.
19:59And you've got quite a mature garden with all these shrubs and the Virginia Creeper going up.
20:04I mean, apart from the extension, it's a little bit like going back in time.
20:08Well, yeah, the Virginia Creeper sounds like a true crime podcast.
20:13I'll be interested to see how they've used those little eave spaces in between the lovely bay dormer and the
20:18little cat slide one in the middle.
20:20Okay, well, let's get exploring then.
20:24Absolutely.
20:32Oh, lovely.
20:34Oh, look at all the swallows flying on the wall.
20:36Oh.
20:37There's a handy little bench to put your shoes on, although I would definitely knock that over most days.
20:42Yeah, the chaos of family life.
20:45It's not giving much away, is it?
20:47I wonder if that carpet was already here and rather than have the expense of replacing it, they sort of
20:52built the scheme around it and made it work.
20:54Well, if it ain't broke.
20:55But that staircase is really tight and steep and I can actually see there's a doorway hanging out over the
21:00top step.
21:01That's definitely not confined nowadays.
21:04Jeopardy.
21:04They were rock and roll, those Victorians, weren't they?
21:07They just fell down the stairs.
21:08Yeah.
21:09Love that.
21:10Let's have a look through here.
21:11That's fine.
21:17Wow.
21:18Oh.
21:20Yes.
21:21Oh, this is lovely.
21:22Oh, this is nice.
21:24This is correct.
21:24What is that material?
21:26Oh, this is the back of that side extension that we saw from the front.
21:30Okay.
21:31You know me, don't normally like wall units, but push them right up like that.
21:36That's like kind of archive.
21:37Brilliant.
21:38And then have wall lights underneath.
21:39I really like that.
21:41Styled perfectly as well, isn't it?
21:43Not a thing out of place.
21:44Even their appliances match the wall.
21:47Even their dog bed matches their sofa.
21:50Everything's considered here, isn't it?
21:52I think this is somebody that's spent a lot of time thinking about every little detail.
22:02Wow.
22:04Here we are.
22:06That's one big old sofa, isn't it?
22:08It's groovy, baby.
22:10Oh, what a spot.
22:12This would be my favourite spot too.
22:13You're so connected to the garden, but it's just a lovely cosy spot to sit by the fire to.
22:19There's been a real exactness to how this place has been put together.
22:23I don't think this is an off-the-shelf sofa.
22:24This fits perfectly inside this space, unless it comes with a matching post of lamp.
22:30But what I've noticed as well, on the upstand of the step down into this area,
22:34we've got the vertical blue and white stripes that continue all the way through and around for the patio,
22:40which is back up at the same level as the kitchen.
22:42Some real attention to detail here.
22:49Mmm.
22:50This is elegant.
22:53Ooh.
22:54I love the raw plaster.
22:56Yes.
22:56My first ever flat.
22:57I had it plastered and it was pink instead of grey, and I just decided to keep it as well.
23:02It's so beautiful.
23:03You would have been plastered a lot back in the day.
23:06So romantic and soft as well.
23:08But it ties in with the furniture as well with these lovely little armchairs and the walnut floor tying in
23:14with the leather.
23:14It's really nice.
23:16Very tonal.
23:17Even looks like there's some kind of aged mottal effect in the niche there with that gorgeous boat.
23:23It's a very tight colour palette through this house as well, isn't it?
23:27You've got your plaster pinks and your beiges and blue.
23:30And that's it.
23:32It's a touch of white.
23:39Ooh.
23:40Here we are up in that dormer.
23:43Mmm.
23:44What a lovely room.
23:45This is very Scandi, isn't it?
23:48That's something I...
23:48What, skins on the bed?
23:49I feel like that's just something they do in Norway.
23:52I don't know.
23:53Yeah.
23:53To wear off the evil predators.
23:56It's a lovely green, isn't it?
23:57Very natural in here.
23:59Yeah.
24:00Yeah, well, we're up in the trees.
24:01It sort of shifted to a different colour palette, I think, on this floor.
24:04I noticed passing that the other rooms have got more green tones than we saw downstairs.
24:08So...
24:09Yeah.
24:09This is the upstairs colour.
24:10Yeah.
24:19Oh, that's a cool bunk bed.
24:21Yeah.
24:22Okay.
24:23I want this room.
24:25Exactly.
24:26But it's a completely standard bunk bed, isn't it?
24:28Yeah.
24:28That's been enclosed and there's little bits of beading added and then the stripey ceiling
24:32just turns it into something that looks really bespoke.
24:35The dark colour as well, that really lends itself to turning it into dens and like different
24:39things for playing.
24:40I love the tent, the stripes on the ceiling.
24:43It's just fun.
24:44And the little chair as well.
24:46Ugh.
24:47These kids have it too good.
24:50Kids these days, eh?
24:51Kids.
24:52Glad I never was one.
25:01This home has been curated with absolute conviction.
25:05And even when there were compromises, they used clever architectural tricks to make the
25:09most of it.
25:10Like where you had the lowered head height using a sunken lounge makes the most of that
25:14space.
25:14It's incredibly cohesive.
25:16I'm giving this home a nine.
25:21I think the homeowners have created a space which is perfect almost within an inch of its
25:26life.
25:27It still feels like a lovely family home though, but just a very stylish family home.
25:34Every little thing has been considered right down to the lovely handles on the kitchen cupboards.
25:39I'm giving this home a ten.
25:44I feel that a home should tell the story of the people that live there.
25:49I think it's clear that there wasn't an original intention to leave this room plastered pink.
25:56But when they saw that they loved it, they responded to it and adjusted their scheme accordingly.
26:02Where wood has been stored, it has scratched the paintwork and they have left those scratches
26:07there because they tell the story of the home, that palimpsest, that trace of the habitation.
26:13It's really, really subtle, but I think it's what gives home a greater depth of meaning.
26:24So, now the judges have seen all three homes, it's time for the final scores to be revealed.
26:30First up, it was Georgian townhouse in Ayr.
26:34I gave it an eight.
26:38Banjo, you gave it an eight as well.
26:41Danny.
26:42Well, this was a beautifully restored and rectified home.
26:46Although I did feel like I made a little bit of slicing and dicing because it made it even surpass
26:50its
26:50former glory.
26:51I gave it a seven.
26:52Right.
26:53So that gives the Georgian townhouse 23.
26:58That's a really, really respectable score.
27:00A great home.
27:01Gorgeous.
27:03Next, it's Artisan House in Dunbreg.
27:07Danny, you gave it an eight.
27:11I gave it a nine.
27:13Banjo, did it capture your heart?
27:14Well, I felt like I was on a magical mystery tour right around the world here.
27:19It was like a little jewel box filled with so many treasures and a really lovely personal collection.
27:25I gave it a nine.
27:26Okay.
27:27It's a good score.
27:28That gives the Artisan House 26.
27:32And finally, the Victorian Sandstone Villa in Kilmacomb.
27:37Banjo, you gave it a ten.
27:41Danny, you gave it a nine.
27:46I found this home to be so full of stories, stories from the past and stories to be told.
27:52It really shows the way that it's used and the way that it's loved.
27:55So I fell for it.
27:57I gave it a ten.
27:58Oh, wow.
28:00That gives the Victorian Sandstone Villa 29.
28:04Near perfect.
28:05Mmm.
28:07So we have our finalists for the West.
28:10The Victorian Sandstone Villa wins in the West and earns its place in the final of Scotland's Home of the
28:16Year.
28:20Next time...
28:21Look at that view.
28:22The judges are in the south.
28:24It's so cute and colourful.
28:26As the hunt continues for Scotland's Home of the Year.
28:31I'm so glad you're here.
28:31Thank you very much.
28:35We'll see you soon.
28:35Take a look.
28:35Make a look at the bridge.
28:50If you look at the pitch that way.
28:50And I'm so glad you're here.
28:50And I'm your hope.
28:51And I'm so glad you're here.
28:52I'm so glad you're here.
28:58And I'll see.
