Members of a dozen labor unions gathered outside Taiwan’s Cabinet building ahead of Labor Day, calling for better housing benefits and stronger retirement protections. Union members say rising living costs and low wages are making it difficult for young people to start families, while leaving older workers unable to save for retirement.

00:04ahead of Labor Day on Friday to demand better housing benefits and retirement security for workers.
00:19They say rising living costs means young people can't afford to start families
00:23and it leaves older workers vulnerable as they can't save enough to retire.
00:27The groups also blame President Lai Jingde for not fulfilling his campaign promise
00:32of building tens of thousands of social housing units.
00:35Instead, he made cuts to the project earlier this year.
01:02Union members are also calling for increasing salaries to reflect inflation and the overall
01:08growing GDP. They also want higher unemployment benefits to protect middle-aged and older workers
01:14and increased retirement contribution rates, all in hopes of improving workers' livelihoods.
01:22Organizers say they're expecting 300 people to take to the streets on Friday
01:26and they're hoping the government will hear their calls to improve worker conditions
01:30and put them into action.
