01:38In the military, I traveled around a lot.
01:40He was in the army at the time.
01:43From New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Jersey, Japan for three years.
01:48When she was little, she didn't play like other kids in the sense that, you know,
01:52I'm going to be a nurse, I'm going to be a secretary, I'm going to be a pilot.
01:55It was always, always entertainment.
01:59I, like, adore Julie Andrews and The Sound of Music.
02:03That, I think, actually started everything.
02:06I would just sing to this over and over, and I'd imagine that I had, like, an audience.
02:12The hills are alive with the sound of music.
02:19Whenever Maria, like, came out, she was on the hills.
02:21She just, it's so cheesy, but she just looked so free to me.
02:27My grandma was actually the first one that realized this is, like, something more than just something that a kid
02:31likes to do.
02:32Even though I knew she could sing well, unusually well, um, for some reason it just didn't dawn on me,
02:38and my mom said, oh my gosh, would you listen to her?
02:48It was what I latched onto, because of the fact that my parents were separated later on and divorced.
02:53It's like, I had to witness a lot of, you know, arguments at times and things like that,
02:56and it was my way of getting out of that situation.
02:58When I left the marriage, I moved from Fort Dix back home with my mother in Pennsylvania.
03:05As I got older, it became a real form of release.
03:09On my worst days, you know, it became something that I could release all my bad energy out there.
03:14You know, my voice was what I used to, as my form of release, as my expression.
03:25At around ages six or seven, I was singing at, like, local pool parties, block parties.
03:30You'd hear a lot of stuff, oh, her mother must have forced her to go out there,
03:33because there's a lot of stage mothers out there, you know.
03:36And I was so determined not to be one of those, you know.
03:39But you want to see a grumpy kid, you let a few weeks go by when she was a little
03:43thing,
03:44and no block parties were available.
03:50The same mothers and young people who heard her during the elementary school talent show
03:56when she was in first grade nagged the living daylights out of me
03:59to send in a tape to star search.
04:01It was a big thing back then, you know.
04:04We did it sort of as, oh, let's just see what happens.
04:06We didn't expect anything, and then we got the call back.
04:09Please give an international welcome to Christina Aguilera.
04:13I got out there.
04:14I was actually, it was funny what I wore.
04:17I wore my mom's old, like, disco-going-days shirt,
04:22because it was like, it was a shirt,
04:23but at eight years old it fit me like a dress.
04:34I was pretty happy when I walked off the stage, you know.
04:37All right, let's see what the judges have to say.
04:42Champion Christopher Eason.
04:44Congratulations.
04:45I was really upset, like, pretty much as soon as I got off the stage.
04:49She was just so crushed backstage, you know, just crying and everything.
04:53I said, hey, you've got to go shake his hand.
04:56I was, like, tears running down my face at eight years old.
04:58I was like, congratulations, I'm really happy for you.
05:02And then the whole bottom started falling out with the people in the town.
05:05People started changing and alienation sort of began.
05:08As each year progressed, it got worse and worse.
05:10And she tried to keep it to herself and she tried not to talk about it.
05:14So it was like a small town and, you know,
05:16I just lived a completely different lifestyle than what my peers were in school.
05:20And, you know, it causes, you know, certain problems.
05:27By the time we reached about sixth grade, she couldn't stand it.
05:30She was having nightmares.
05:31We were getting threats.
05:33My phone had to be tapped.
05:35And it's like I couldn't win either way because it's like, oh, so sing for us, Christina.
05:39And I'd be like, well, come on, you guys are hanging out.
05:42You know, let's not do...
05:43If I would sing, they'd be like, oh, well, she, look, she's bragging again.
05:48Da-da-da-da-da-da.
05:49She's singing what she does on stage all the time.
05:50And then if I wouldn't, it would be like, oh, well, she thinks she's too good to sing for us.
05:54Finally, by sixth grade, we had to move because I just couldn't put her through it again.
05:57Plus, it was getting kind of scary.
05:59It was ridiculous.
05:59So we moved to Wexford.
06:03One day I was reading either me or my mother, I can't remember which,
06:07we were reading the Pittsburgh newspaper and ran across this tiny, tiny little ad.
06:13It talked about an open audition for the Mickey Mouse Club.
06:16It was so many different kids, and it was just cut after cut after cut, and it took all day
06:21long.
06:22I'd gotten every cut, every cut I passed.
06:25So we went home feeling really great, but then you never hear anything, never heard anything.
06:29I knew, basically, that, you know, no one's calling, so I didn't make it.
06:34Something like two years later, she gets a call back that they had held on to her tape.
06:39Oh, well, before she was too young to be on the show,
06:41but now, you know, being 12 years old and whatever, we want her to come back and audition again.
06:46Oh, gosh, she just lost it.
06:47She was jumping up and down, and she cried.
06:49She was so happy.
06:50It's like, oh, my gosh.
06:51I totally, like, you know, freaked out.
06:53It was really, really cool.
06:54And then, from there, I packed my bags, and I went with my mom and sister, and to Orlando.
07:02When we come back, Christina becomes a part of a group of child stars earmarked for fame.
07:07Part of the new cast, part of the six new cast was me,
07:10and then there was Justin from NSYNC that you know now, and Britney Spears.
07:23For Christina Aguilera, a spot on the Mickey Mouse Club was the beginning of a dream come true.
07:27But following that dream would mean family upheaval, unexpected disappointment,
07:31and taking some very big chances.
07:35Part of the new cast, part of the six new cast was me,
07:39and then there was Justin from NSYNC that you know now, and Britney Spears.
07:43You couldn't separate Britney and Christina.
07:45I mean, they were best friends.
07:47There were so many other kids that all of a sudden loved performing and loved entertaining,
07:51and it was such a good energy to be around that.
07:53Well, see, my parents are clowns.
07:55We throw pies all the time.
07:57At dinner time, on vacations, family reunions.
08:01We were getting prepared to go back to start filming the third year.
08:05I was all excited.
08:06I was getting ready to go, and then, you know, all of a sudden it was canceled.
08:10She actually got the very final award when the decision was made by phone,
08:13and she just started crying.
08:15But then it was time to go to the next step.
08:20I knew that I'd always wanted to be a recording artist,
08:24so I needed some sort of representation, and it was really tough,
08:27because being from Pittsburgh, it's like there was nobody there, really,
08:30because it's not an entertainment-based place.
08:34I actually had a connection.
08:37SWV actually came as a guest star on the Mickey Mouse Club.
08:39Behind the set, in the makeup room, Christina was by herself.
08:43She was singing to herself, thinking no one was around.
08:46Somebody happened to hear me just singing in the hall.
08:48And the next thing you know, here's this lady who was traveling with SWV,
08:52and she's asking for Christina Aguilera's mother, you know,
08:55and I'm like, what happened?
08:58What went wrong?
09:00And she just gave me her card and said,
09:02I know this wonderful manager.
09:04You know, if the show ever cancels,
09:06you know, give me a call because I can introduce you to him.
09:08He's really, really good.
09:09And, of course, she was talking about Norma Kurtz.
09:13My father called me to say that he had seen this girl, met this girl,
09:18and he was extremely excited about her,
09:20at which point I asked him, how old is she?
09:23And he said, 15.
09:24And as the joke goes, I said, have her call when she's legal,
09:28because at the time, the marketplace really wasn't prime for, you know,
09:33teen, fresh vocalists who were just coming off Nirvana and Pearl Jam,
09:36and that was sort of the vibe of the time.
09:44I'd gone over to Romania to represent the U.S.
09:48in an international talent competition.
09:56And then it really opened my eyes that there's a whole world out there,
09:59you know what I mean?
10:01And I wanted to get out there and have a piece of it.
10:05The market was changing more towards youth-oriented,
10:08like Hanson and such,
10:12and she was getting older and getting more experienced.
10:15We'd gotten a few demo songs together.
10:17And then we put a plan into place to shop her in the fall.
10:21Norman Kurtz called me and he said,
10:24I need to see you.
10:25So he came in with his son, Steve Kurtz,
10:28and played a demo tape of a girl that was 15 years old.
10:31And I was very impressed.
10:32So I put it in an envelope with a little note on it,
10:35and I sent it to Ron.
10:36Ron, R.E. Christina Aguilera.
10:39She's 16, lives in Pittsburgh, has star quality.
10:43And then he had a little analysis of some of the songs,
10:46and it said, any interest, call me.
10:49So I took a meeting with Christina and her management.
10:53I was so nervous.
10:55I was so nervous.
10:56I looked at the door, I was like, thinking about seriously leaving.
10:59Christina came into the meeting,
11:00and it's hard to say whether she really understood,
11:04at that time and at that age,
11:06that it was kind of like a big career meeting taking place.
11:11Oh, I got it.
11:12I got it.
11:13But a calm comes over me.
11:15You know what I mean?
11:15It's like, if I'm going to do this, I got to face it.
11:17She was very much in her own zone,
11:19and, you know, tremendously cute.
11:22And I just said to her,
11:24Just sing for me.
11:25You know what I mean?
11:26He's like, just sing.
11:27And he totally put me on the spot.
11:29She said, right now, right here, you want me to just sing?
11:32And I said, yeah, acapella, just sing.
11:34So she said, okay, and nailed the song.
11:37I started off by offering her manager, Steve,
11:41a what I call garden variety boilerplate demo deal.
11:45But in the process, a buddy of mine called me from Disney,
11:49and they had this sort of problematic song
11:51that was the end title of Mulan called Reflection.
11:53I thought of Christina.
12:03This random phone call came from my manager one day,
12:06who was like,
12:08Christina, there's this thing for Disney.
12:09It's a movie.
12:10Can you belt the high E above middle C?
12:12Feel my reflection show
12:18Who I am inside of you
12:24So I took a karaoke tape of Whitney Houston's
12:27I Want to Run To You from the Bodyguard soundtrack,
12:29went in my bathroom, like, to my shower stall,
12:32and it was so bad because it sounded so cheesy and so tinny,
12:35but I had to prove that I could sing this note,
12:37and I did it.
12:39People say it's the note that changed my life.
12:41Within about three days,
12:43she was on her way to L.A. with her manager
12:44to meet with Matthew Wilder
12:46and the producer and writer of the song.
12:48We all got together.
12:50They taught her the song.
12:52She sang it once.
12:54By the time she was about five seconds
12:57into the first verse, she had the job.
13:10She sang Reflection at 8 o'clock in the morning
13:13on CBS This Morning,
13:14which was an incredibly difficult thing to do.
13:16A lot of people were apprehensions at the time,
13:18you know, of this new girl, you know,
13:19they heard the record and everything.
13:21A lot of people are like,
13:22oh, can she do it live?
13:23Can she do this?
13:24You know, is it as good?
13:25And it was like my moment
13:27to be able to prove myself.
13:28I had actually heard of Christine
13:29when she did the Mulan song, Reflection,
13:32and I heard it, and I go,
13:33who's that singing?
13:35You know, and then I'd heard her name.
13:38I heard she was 15 or 16 years old.
13:40I'm going, damn, she's really good.
13:52I think it was summer of 98
13:56that Christina got on a plane,
13:59got a hotel room,
14:00came out to L.A.,
14:01and we started.
14:02I was on that plane going,
14:03my gosh, you know,
14:04I'm making this happen.
14:06You know, it's something
14:06that I've always dreamt about,
14:07always wanted,
14:08and I was like,
14:08I'm doing it for real.
14:10I'm going to make my record.
14:11It was the coolest moment ever
14:13when you have that sort of realization.
14:15When we come back,
14:16Christina sets out
14:17to record her debut album.
14:19And all of a sudden,
14:19I just realized,
14:21wow, I'm signed to, like,
14:22a record company now.
14:23They kind of own me a little bit.
14:25You know, it just sort of became like,
14:27oh, wow, I'm a product now.

15:44With a dazzling performance
15:45on the blonde soundtrack
15:46and a label deal,
15:48Christina was ready
15:48to make her first record.
15:50It was a moment
15:50she dreamed of her entire life.
15:52But with industry pressures,
15:54media backbiting and creative frustrations
15:56that she'd never imagined.
15:58When she went to record her album in L.A.
16:01is when it kind of hit us, I think.
16:03Leaving Wexford, Pennsylvania,
16:04moving to Los Angeles,
16:05staying in a hotel when she was 17.
16:07It was really lonely, you know.
16:08It's like all of a sudden
16:10to be taken out of Pittsburgh
16:11to this city and being surrounded
16:15with so much at once.
16:17I think particularly at night
16:19it must have been tough for her
16:20because she's home alone
16:22in a hotel room
16:23when her friends are back in school
16:24going to the TGIF
16:26or the school football game.
16:28If I would have been in school,
16:29like at that school desk,
16:31I'd been looking out the window
16:32saying, oh God, you know,
16:33what would have happened
16:34if I would have done it?
16:35If I would have gone out there
16:36and really followed it,
16:38if I followed my dream.
16:38What a girl wants,
16:40what a girl needs.
16:41I don't think at that particular point,
16:43like on the first day
16:44of her arrival in Los Angeles
16:45to record,
16:45that she really ever...
16:47I knew what her dream was,
16:49but I don't think she ever realized
16:51that it was about to come true.
16:53Thank you for giving me
16:55time to breathe.
16:56The first song I recorded
16:57was actually
16:58What a Girl Wants.
16:59What a Girl Wants was cool,
17:01you know what I mean,
17:01to start out with.
17:04I had my own ideas
17:05of what I wanted to sound like,
17:06what I wanted to look like,
17:07this and that,
17:08and all of a sudden,
17:09I just realized,
17:10wow, I'm signed to, like,
17:12a record company now.
17:13The way the album was taking shape,
17:16we knew we had something very special.
17:18I started contacting,
17:20you know,
17:21all of my buddies
17:22and my friends
17:23and my salon of creative people
17:24to start to collect
17:25a group of tunes
17:26that would become
17:27her first album.
17:28There was very few cases
17:29where a song appeared
17:31and we just took it.
17:34But one of those cases
17:35was Genie in a Bottle.
17:36Here we go.
17:37My buddy's saying,
17:39let's go.
17:44At the time it was called
17:47If You Want to Be With Me
17:49and I listened to it
17:50and I said,
17:50Ron, yeah, nice song.
17:51Well, let's record it.
17:52And Ron was like,
17:52no, no,
17:53this is the song.
17:55I really thought that
17:57Genie could be that first single
17:59and I always,
18:00always believed in it.
18:00Then I had to talk her into it.
18:02I liked it.
18:03I liked it.
18:04But it definitely lacked soul.
18:07Her concern was that
18:09she had this great voice
18:10and she wanted the whole world
18:11to know about it right now.
18:13Britney was already happening
18:15and NSYNC was happening
18:16and the Backstreet Boys
18:17had certainly happening.
18:18So the teen marketplace
18:20was very right.
18:22So we needed something
18:23fresh and youthful.
18:27We did a series of
18:28invitation-only showcases
18:30in really nice venues.
18:32Performing for people
18:33for about 20, 25 minutes.
18:35The one that sticks out in my mind
18:39actually was the one
18:40that we did for MTV and VH1.
18:43It was an audience
18:44that had seen it all,
18:45been there, done that.
18:46It was like they were
18:47just going to sit back
18:47and say, oh, impress me.
18:49And she just opened her mouth
18:51and started singing.
18:59I was just raving.
19:00This girl can knock you
19:01through a freaking wall
19:03with her notes.
19:03Four weeks later,
19:04we released the video.
19:11She is officially entering
19:13the world of TRL
19:14at number nine today
19:15with her debut song,
19:16Genie in a Bottle.
19:18I watched it for the first time
19:19and I said something
19:20to the effect of,
19:20oh, God, this has TRL written
19:23all over it.
19:23I think, you know,
19:24the hit meter
19:26was running pretty high on that.
19:27I mean, we were just
19:28jumping around the house
19:29the first time we heard
19:30on the radio.
19:30It was just like, wow,
19:32you know what I mean?
19:32This is my video
19:33and it's being played.
19:37Everything that you look at
19:38every week on the growth
19:39of a single or an album
19:41was positive.
19:42We watched it go from like 63
19:45to 30 to 12 to 2.
19:48I mean, I don't remember
19:48the exact numbers,
19:49but it was an absolute
19:51meteoric rise through the chart
19:52and in like five weeks
19:54it became a number one record.
19:55I bought Genie in a bottle, baby.
19:58Come, come, come on and let me out.
20:02We didn't know
20:03what was going to happen
20:03with the record.
20:04I got the feeling
20:05that it was going to do well.
20:06You know what I mean?
20:06From what everybody was saying
20:07and from Genie in a bottle
20:10the single having gone
20:11number one and whatnot.
20:12But also there were
20:13a lot of other big records
20:14coming out that week,
20:15including Puff Daddy's.
20:16We all were certain
20:17that Puffy was going to debut
20:19at number one,
20:20but the numbers were coming back
20:22that first,
20:22those first few days
20:24after the weekend sales
20:26and we're like,
20:27holy cow, what's going on?
20:28I got a call
20:29from my record company people.
20:31They said,
20:31are you ready for this?
20:32He's like,
20:33your album's going to debut
20:34at number one.
20:34It's the number one album
20:35tomorrow.
20:36And she's like, no.
20:37I'm like, yes,
20:38your album debuted
20:39at number one.
20:40Seeing my name
20:41in a number one spot
20:42on a billboard chart
20:43was something
20:43I'd always imagined.
20:45You know,
20:45something I've always wanted.
20:46It was the most
20:47amazing thing in the world.
20:49The first thing
20:50that I ever thought
20:51about Christina
20:52was I felt sorry for
20:53because you couldn't
20:55read an article
20:55about her
20:56without seeing
20:57Britney Spears.
20:58I'm an 18-year-old girl.
20:59You know what I mean?
21:00Of course I'm going to have
21:00similarities to other
21:01young people out there.
21:04But in all,
21:05it's like,
21:06I'm the new girl.
21:07I remember thinking,
21:08wow,
21:08she's going to have
21:08to really ride this one out.
21:10Some of us have started
21:10in the same place,
21:11but it'll be different
21:13in the long run.
21:16I did my first appearance
21:17on Total Request Live.
21:19She wrote me a note
21:19when she was here
21:20at TRL,
21:22like,
21:22like on a little
21:24yellow,
21:24what do you call it,
21:25like a wipe it,
21:26you know,
21:26type thing,
21:27whatever.
21:27And it just said,
21:28Hi, Carson.
21:29So sorry I missed you.
21:30Look forward to meeting you soon.
21:32Love, Christina.
21:33That was all it took.
21:34Pick up a USA Today.
21:36On the front page
21:36of the Life section,
21:37there's something about
21:38Christina Uncork's
21:39secret crush.
21:40And it was this whole thing
21:42based on, like,
21:43how I have this crush
21:44on Carson Daly.
21:45I hadn't even met her
21:46at that point.
21:47My first little
21:47scandal gossip thing.
21:50She has a timeless talent
21:52and the timelessness
21:53of her talent
21:54can carry her
21:55through a couple of years,
21:56you know,
21:56a couple of decades
21:57even if she wants it to.
21:58She's got the voice,
21:59she's got the talent.
22:00I've worked too hard
22:02for this just to stop now.
22:04I wouldn't want to say
22:05that she is
22:07really a star.
22:08I think you become a star
22:10over a much longer
22:10period of time.
22:11This is totally
22:12what I want to do
22:13and I'll keep
22:15taking it to the next level
22:16and seeing where it goes.
22:36Oh, baby, I think you
22:39couldn't know.
22:40Oh, baby, I think you
22:43Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:49I think you
