01:10the matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers
01:1655 the joys of an auction most people will go to a sale with something in mind but come away
01:21with
01:21something different the fun is the chase we'll have a look and we'll advise you from there
01:25you just don't know what's on the end of the phone what you're going to find when you open them
01:29doors
01:29this is a family's love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing most people will buy a
01:37car because they can relate to it
01:39maybe a car that dad had you're selling dreams right here we go
01:53you're like a wrap up a drain pipe jackie
01:58bickering hq as well as petrol fumes and polish there's a whiff of romance in the air
02:03who's the only whiskey new car me well well i feel like there's a story behind this
02:12well it's valentine's day we've been coming up here for a few months now looking at the cars
02:17i thought 12 roses was maybe a little bit 19th century 20th century how lucky am i the car and
02:25the man
02:28and the heady atmosphere has spread out of the garage up to the office thank you bye
02:36well you're newly engaged aren't you so your father must have pulled out all the stops well
02:41we had a conversation a couple weeks ago and i went oh as soon as you've proposed does that mean
02:45you're going to ask me to be your valentine he's like no he said we're not doing that anyway and
02:50he's got me a fake red rose bouquet but in it it's got lindar chocolates in it as well
02:57organized for tonight my wife's organized me she's taking me away for tonight no she's not
03:02she is where are you going i have no idea there's a tart and some sponge cakes by the looks
03:11of it
03:11one rhubarb one lemon and one with sprinkles on i do like a good tart now and again
03:25scotland bound that scotland be pouring a rain down there later on that without a doubt
03:32there's nothing derek likes more than a trip beyond hadrian's wall
03:36so i'm going up there today to pick up they tell me an ostrich seven and they tell me it's
03:42um it's
03:42parked in a bit of an unusual place so we're gonna have a bit of a chew getting it out
03:46well that's
03:47nothing new so i don't really bother me a great deal about that but uh it's interesting you know as
03:53long
03:53it's not in his bedroom and it'll be all right
04:12andrew johnston likes his cars but today it's time to let one go so then andrew tell me what we've
04:18got
04:19here this is the db9 volante which i've had for 15 or 16 years
04:28it's not his aston though it's his austin and it's not in andrew's garage the car that's for
04:35sales in the dining room oh it's in the dining room the car's in your dining room this car's in
04:41the dining room and it has been for the past 18 years the austin hasn't moved since it was driven
04:50in almost two decades ago this is a 1938 austin 7 and why have you got it in your dining
04:58room
05:01well my grandchildren persuaded my partner that it would be fun to have it in the dining room and she
05:07was not very enamored with that it's been where they sat and ate their breakfast cereals and they've
05:15climbed in and out of the windows and through the roof and done all sorts of things it's been
05:21well used but not in the traditional no not in the driving sense no
05:32it's been very good nick innit it's fully fully functional although it hasn't run for 18 years
05:37but it is fully functional my parents never owned a car other than for a brief period when i was
05:44very
05:44young they bought an austin 7 and they couldn't afford to keep it going so um that's in their honor
05:50i've had it for about 38 years and it's been in the dining room for 18. Andrew's partner
05:59vi is less enamored than he is when i first saw it it was unkept so my job has been
06:07to keep it clean
06:10especially after all the frolics that goes on in it drinking eating
06:19legs hanging out the roof and we was once in that car with nearly 12 women who were 20 years
06:25onwards and all there was with legs all over the place loved every minute of it i can't remember
06:32that at all we're moving house and if i moved into the garage in my new house i think it
06:40would sit
06:40there with a blanket over it with a sheet over it and it would be a great shame somebody will
06:45want to get
06:46a lot of pleasure and enjoyment from it so it's time for it to go it's served its purpose in
06:52in our
06:52family time for mr austin to go somewhere else you'll be glad to see his tiny little tailpipe going down
07:14a familiar face has returned to hq a 1968 aston martin dbs which failed to sell in an auction back
07:23in march
07:252021 95 000 are you all done 95 unfortunately i've got to pass on that one we need more
07:34i remember the car well and it's a lovely lovely example and it went out more or less exactly as
07:41it's come back in i think it's probably fair to say they haven't really caught on um with desirability
07:48as yet it's the poor man's classic aston let's be fair they're not a db5 they're not a db6 are
07:55they
07:55they're not in that league but i think interest is is growing i know not everyone likes green but it
08:02does suit
08:03it it really does interior's superb steering wheels lovely dashboards lovely there's keeping cars and selling
08:10cars and in my opinion that's a keeping car and in matthewson stalwart andy paul has a dbs mastermind
08:19on hand this car is a foot wider than it's supposed to be is that right it is wider you
08:25know it seems
08:25how wide is it yeah yeah they've got some stance haven't they i'm glad we found an expert so so
08:30am i by
08:31chance may i want to know running one of these oh i've still got the photographs on my phone i
08:38can
08:39show you no no no no no no it's a family show no we don't have to see that well
08:45i'll have a bet with
08:45you paul anyway you say what do you got to say i think it'll do between 90 and 100. right
08:51i think
08:51would be 85 and 90. ah there you go you said are you head of signs then yes i'm just
09:18going to think
09:18some more signs to put up in a minute yeah no bloody signs yeah there are all sorts of reasons
09:26why people flock to bickering to pick up a classic car i've always wanted a vw a vintage vw and
09:33this
09:33is my new car hopefully it's all a chrome works great color color spot on nice really nice i've
09:42got a name for it bugsy i'm looking to buy a first classic so going all that big you can't
09:51beat that
09:52smell the vintage oil and leather smell together i thought that was you it will be once i've said
10:01one very british patrician motor has attracted a couple of serious pre-auction admirers
10:08steve jagger and mark oyston plan on using it on an intrepid adventure a 3 000 mile rally from south
10:16africa to tanzania the whole rally takes just over three weeks you know from start to finish i think
10:22there's about 50 competitors in all in all different vehicles more walks of life different countries
10:29different countries yeah their mark of choice is inspired by a classic american rally film
10:36the cannonball run back in the early 80s which obviously mark can remember but i'm too young
10:42there was the shake um in there who uh did it in a rolls-royce silver shadow but the two
10:49fragile
10:49and uh so we felt that this spiritual successor to that car would be the bentley because it's still
10:56got the big 6.75 litre engine but with a couple of turbos whacked on it so that's the thinking
11:03and our
11:03team name will be the great shakes hopefully we'll get from here to be in one piece so you seem
11:12pretty dead set on doing this oh definitely yeah yeah yeah it's booked it's booked and you've not
11:34the matthewsons have a very particular expertise in extracting vehicles from unusual and tricky
11:39situations oh blimey there yeah all right today derek is faced with one of the oddest to remove a 1938
11:50austin seven and from a scottish dining room hey we're here look at that lovely area beautiful views
12:01look at that you can see all the way to dundee beautiful really lovely well then well derek
12:11it's exactly what you want around here isn't it oh definitely yeah i've watched you on the tv
12:16for years you don't you don't look a bloody bit different i'm looking forward to seeing this car
12:22i'm told it's in an unusual place it's in an unusual place well well i don't know that's amazing
12:32isn't it yes what do you think it's incredible it's a big seven isn't it it's an austin big it's
12:37a big
12:37seven it's a big yeah it's a big yeah and and this is sat in here for years it's been
12:42here for 18
12:43years the dining table and chairs went and more toys came in they used to get in behind the wheel
12:50and they were pretending to be driving on holidays and things like that yeah i can imagine it yeah
12:54well it's amazing next up extricating the austin from its resting spot of 18 years
13:02derek's going to need a novice's help andrew's partner vai five would you be happy sitting in
13:07it while we pushed it out or you would you be concerned are you that's the way then yeah
13:11so the foot break is that one on this is it that's it it's the middle yeah yeah it's the
13:15middle one
13:16all right you're sure you'll be all right i'm losing confidence now yeah that that one makes
13:23the noise and that one makes it stop okay so you're all right on that one there yeah okay you're
13:27all right yeah stay confident we're going on a beer that's it you've got it yeah a little bit of
13:34right hand down i think are we all right there andrew yep let's just straighten up a bit by a
13:39little
13:39bit of left hand down so give it some right hand now if you can some right hand down now
13:44a little bit
13:44of shunting that's it back again there you go she'll do it that i think don't love it will we
13:52do it now
13:52yeah we'll do it now okay we'll do it now now right oh we're away
14:09smooth as silt and quiet as a lamb
14:18never find a better runner
14:23yeah sad to see it go oh yeah a wee bit a wee bit but not really it's this this
14:29time
14:30it's the right time and hopefully somebody else will get a lot of fun out of it
14:37yeah bang on yeah lovely a little bit that way andrew
14:44you can hold it about there yeah i've got it let it all off okay
14:51that's it if you can lock her up there okay oh man i'll tell you what if you all went
14:56as easy as
14:56this we'll be laughing wouldn't we
15:01thanks for your hospitality and you been a pleasure thank you and thank you ever so much
15:05no problem good luck with things and most importantly your cakes
15:10oh my food on the way home yeah it means i haven't got to stop keep going enjoy
15:15thanks for coming see you again soon thank you very much bye bye
15:32the 2002 bentley arnage has attracted another admirer
15:38and they're just lovely aren't they terrific value there you go 10 to 13 000 pounds
15:45i mean how we're come on we're talking like fiesta or golf money aren't we i mean look at it
15:52because what were these new oh i dread to think they'd be 120 grand or something weren't they they're
15:57they're awful lot of money someone's lost a lot of money out of that motor car haven't they
16:01people have just got this thing that they cost a lot of money to run service repairs they think
16:06that they have to go to bentley you don't go to a reputable independent and get the same sort
16:13of service that you would get out of a anyone with a vw audi whatever it might be
16:21look at that in there i mean that just that just oozes quality and comfort doesn't it hardly any
16:27wear is there on the seat and things you know carpets are good headlining's lovely
16:34there we go look a sea of plastic oh six seven five look twin turbo course i know look at
16:43that hand
16:44built in crew engine number blah blah blah by colin may flower does that say fallon
16:53so there you go so that's the guy who built the engine and that's the number of the engine beautiful
17:13the austin seven derrick removed from a scottish dining room is back at hq we're pleased to get it
17:21um not that it's ultra valuable but uh it's a nice straight car and it'll sell well yeah a bit
17:28of
17:28right that's it yeah yeah yeah perfect yeah let it go i am yeah yeah yeah a little bit of
17:38a tiny
17:38weaning but not a lot that's it yeah go on roller right hang on she's sweet
17:55just try and guess what people could do if they
17:57here it doesn't matter
18:02there you go
18:06what number 116 96 d a aster martin d b s everyone that comes on site looks at it everyone
18:15that comes
18:15on site talks about it everyone that comes on site would like to own it but the fact of the
18:21matter
18:21is around a thousand quid some bits with me 80 80 power 80 000 82 and a half 85 85
18:28750 87 50 87 90 90
18:32000 90 000 pound 90 000 pound only 90 000 pound i'll take one looks really nice even on the
18:39photograph
18:43all done then very provisional 90 000 pound provisional 90 000
18:54you're hoping aren't you that somebody somewhere is really keen on the car
18:57and he's trying to get their finances in place you don't necessarily have that sort of money sat in
19:02a bank account do you so um it's right to give it a few opportunities to sell sadly it would
19:08appear
19:08it hasn't sold but we'll see never know in the end a deal couldn't be reached and the aston martin
19:15went back to its owner again
19:23every month dozens of motorbikes arrive for sale
19:27some look like they've just come off the race track others are relics from the bygone age
19:36well unusual entry quite a rare bit of kit really um said to be an original genuine police
19:41bike and apparently the uh the owner of it rode it for about 10 years when he was in the
19:47force
19:47so it's got some pretty serious provenance with it basically it's a speed twin a 5ta speed twin
19:54from about 1960 61 um bathtubs all standard of course quite a sought after bike a repro radio they
20:04tell me you know it looks original and genuine doesn't it but they tell me it's actually some sort
20:07of repro so don't hold me to that absolutely yeah yeah that's it yeah old-fashioned mobo brilliant
20:14so i think it's great someone's gonna have immense amount of fun with this
20:19and we did try earlier on to maybe just see if she'd kick over she might go
20:27how about that not a lot wrong with that is there what a nice little machine
20:35or a bonnie little bike
21:07a surprisingly hefty triumph vitesse needs shifting the young matthewsons have press ganged their
21:14pal neil into service why is he going back in what's going on calling chris look don't mess our
21:20system up chris especially they've got forced labor involved in it so how did you get roped into that
21:25i wanted to borrow the forklift on friday so they'll do me a favor i'll deliver a favor
21:33right let's move on
21:43what have we got here then we've got an austin big seven which believe it or not is um is
21:49a bigger
21:49version than the austin seven so the austin seven is probably the only one of the only cars out there
21:56that is sort of bucking the trend with regard to this period of production being saleable or not
22:04there are signs that a new generation is starting to show interest
22:11but they have got to be absolutely lovely and out the box i mean that little car there will
22:18probably witness four or five thousand pounds which is crazy isn't it really sort of the price
22:24of a bathroom suite in almost it wants to go to a lovely little village somewhere doesn't it and
22:30it wants to take the kids to school on the morning in the summer and pick them up of an
22:35afternoon and
22:36he wants the labradors sat on the back seat and it would just once basically you just want to go
22:41back
22:41to james erriet don't you and just pretend for a while that we are back in a place that was
22:48so
22:49much easier and simpler and just generally nicer i think nostalgia it's a powerful thing isn't it
22:59four five seven is the austin seven now these are little cuties aren't they there they are
23:04everyone should have an austin seven at some point 1938 this one we've got four five we've got four
23:10six we've got four seven four eight four nine five thousand pound bid five thousand five one five
23:16thousand one five two five thirty five four five thousand four five five five five thousand five
23:23hundred pounds great little car five thousand six five seven we've got five thousand seven
23:29five thousand seven hundred pound it's on five seven is absolutely there'll be over the moon with that
23:36over the moon so
23:42up next is the 1961 triumph police motorcycle and it's raised the suspicions of former bobby dave
23:50i've never seen one like that before it just made me think that somebody tried to put something
23:58together and it's not quite worked out right five six nine the triumph this is an ex-bristol police bike
24:06start me at 15. dave police bike there i've never seen them like that and it can't be an undercover
24:12bike
24:12because it's got bricks on the front exactly yeah could be double bluffing though dave double bluffing
24:19fifteen hundred pound and a fifteen hundred there at fifteen hundred pound there for the under
24:24clever please bike as dave calls it at fifteen hundred pound he needs a bit more have a word with
24:29the team
24:29up there sixteen hundred pound but one thousand six hundred for the first second third last time very
24:35provisional at sixteen sixteen hundred pounds was a steal for the buyer who locked in the sale and took away
24:43the key
24:45and bikes all around have been doing okay lot number 22 the 900 kawasaki what a stunning machine
24:51and it's on sale at twelve thousand six hundred pounds 580 1988 yamaha there we are look iconic machine
25:02that at 1200 for the third and last time slot number six double two the lovely on the cbr 900
25:10rr
25:11third and last time at 53 be warned
25:25we've got a few bits and bopped in this garage haven't we uh well there's 30 years 33 years living
25:31here looking around with motors all the time in leafy cheshire ray clay who's a retired motoring
25:40engineer is preparing for the collection of a car that he's owned for more than five decades
25:45his 1965 vauxhall viva ha the number of people who see that and they say call that was my first
25:53my dad's
25:54first car you know see we used to sell 240 000 vivas a year
26:07the viva ha was vauxhall's belated new entry to the world of post-war small car family motoring
26:13and the first to be built at the company's elsmere port plant
26:18there were two decidedly boxy launch models race version the deluxe would have set you back 566
26:26pounds and one shilling oh and don't forget the threepins
26:31the viva went through three versions the ha hb and hc before its ultimate demise in 1979 replaced
26:40by the astra although the name was revived briefly in 2015 for the uk version of the opel car
26:51i mean i used to go loot in it 30 miles and i used to drive it down the motorway
26:5780 you know 70
27:0070 70 70 yeah yeah this is before the 70 limit
27:06ray's garage cum workshop is a semi-chaotic memorial to a lifetime of tinkering i painted this
27:15and they took the mick at me when i retired i painted it meteor blue with deluxe coat finish
27:24and put it on with a roller
27:27you've only used them on walls i think aren't you yeah
27:33my son he's worried that i might snuff it
27:37and he's he'll have to come up from tunbridge wells and clear out all this rubbish you see
27:42they'll all be ringing up tonight has it gone there's gone you know
27:46they think i might paint out right the last minute so you're gonna miss it i might do a little
27:52bit
27:59the sales are back under way 61 yeah oh 51 there's more than 600 lots
28:07it's no wonder you don't win many bids 61 it is of every size and shape 51 it is 51
28:16you're all right
28:18i'll let you i'll let you off with it i'll get him to spec servers
28:24lot 136 bentley arnage lovely lovely thing we have got 7 000 seven and a half eight thousand eight
28:34and a half there you go eight thousand five hundred nine thousand nine thousand four hundred pounds
28:41looks for nothing doesn't it let's be fair what a lot of car nine six nine eight says dave on

33:07steve and mark the new owners of the bentley arnage have turned up to claim their vehicle and they're more
33:14convinced than ever that it's the right car to take them on their rally expedition to africa
33:25six and three quarter liters of twin turbo v8 450 brake horsepower absolutely nuts in something that
33:34looks like the royal barge it's too heavy really for what we're doing silly amounts of power but uh
33:40nearly a three-ton car by the sound we've got all of the uh the kit on it but look
33:45at that
33:46that's why this journey is going to be one epic journey with steve and a this is just the offset
33:53this is
33:53just a stat so you know watch this space
34:11i am a bit of a sucker for voxels
34:13i like voxel i was born in luton dunstable hospital which is a hop jump and a skip away
34:19from voxel's plant and here i am yeah with a little cheapy cheapy beaver aren't i
34:29you open the door and you shove your head in i get a great big whiff of voxel and i'm
34:37taken back to
34:37my granddad straight away that really does turbo charge you down that memory lane it really does
34:46there's no point whatsoever in spending a lot of money restoring the car none whatsoever
34:49it's just there still are lots of us out there that just want just a summer user just to go
34:55to
34:56work in you know go to the shops in you know not necessarily go to shows and things in but
35:00just want
35:01to spend a little bit of their week back in the 60s and 70s what better way than to have
35:08a voxel viva
35:13ah so too is a little viva we have got 500 pound for the very usable little viva look bless
35:20it
35:20at 500 600 pound at 600 then for the little viva at 600 not doing very well is it should
35:27have bought
35:27it charlie should have bought that 650 750 800 pound i'd be nice to try and get in four digits
35:46if
35:47we could 800 pound though we've got that 800 at 800 pound and then we all done 850 we're not
35:52quite yet
35:53850 900 pound we're nearly there we're nearly there at 900 a thousand pound there we go we made
35:59it to a thousand pound there we are a thousand pound we've made it there and i'll put it on
36:02sale
36:03at one thousand pound then at one thousand pound then we all done for the first second third and last
36:07time sold at a thousand pounds well done not the cheapest one in the world but not the most dear
36:15so to be fair yeah i would have thought it'd be about around its money
36:26steve rang me up one weekend and suggested he'd seen this africa rally and then we decided there
36:33and then yeah we'll do it and uh it just progressed from there really africa it's just always appealed
36:40the the landscape the animals just the wildness really in east yorkshire steve jagger and mark
36:50oyston are reminiscing about their amazing trip to africa with the bentley arnage
36:57that's the the set-off of the journey there gosh yeah i'm feeling quite emotional actually
37:05it was good a bit of dodgy camera work there can i just point out it was my camera work
37:12my camera works pretty good the trip which steve and mark used to raise funds for macmillan cancer
37:19support didn't exactly work out as planned when we shipped the car across well basically the
37:25shipping agent messed up and the car arrived late so we decided to abort the actual rally
37:31but we did a trip from johannesburg up the indian ocean side so we stopped off quite a few places
37:38along that way up to mozambique and then cut back into the interior of the country next year we'll
37:43do the full route but there were some very long driving days uh which will be similar to what
37:49we'll be doing there'll just be more of them we had some real adventures it was fantastic and the
37:54car performed really really well the razor suspension modified the exhaust slightly so it
38:00just gives a little bit more raw bit more hung put the roof tent on the top full size spare
38:04wheel on
38:05the rear it was like it was made for the off-road conditions it just handled it really well i
38:10mean it
38:11doesn't rev particularly high the engine so the things we're doing it would just change its level
38:16of purr we met some amazing awesome people on our trips and of course everywhere we went and
38:23everywhere we parked the people had the crowds around us because they'd never seen a car like that before
38:34but the highlight of any trip to this part of the world is the wildlife
38:42oh yes this was our elephant incident it looked further away on the cam footage than it uh it
38:49certainly felt at the time there's uh road signs with elephants squashing cars and things it's like
38:56you don't you don't get many of those in east yorkshire
39:03yeah you'll never forget those memories and it's vistas in your mind it's fantastic
39:08that was beautiful yeah it was absolutely indian ocean and the beaches were beautiful
39:15the bentley's still in africa in storage waiting for the next installment of steve and mark's adventures
39:22but this initial trip was a vital piece of preparation for the rally proper
39:27still nervous still things to do a lot of the planning that went into this year's has just moved
39:33forwards into next year's because what i have learned about mark is he snores like a ping
39:39roaming in porridge and uh the uh uh it's definitely a job for separate rooms mainly separate buildings
39:58i like oddball things i like strange cars and cars that that nobody wanted or or that there was loads
40:06of
40:06there's none now you know i like different things in carlisle john percival the new owner of the now
40:13re-sprayed beaver is introducing his son austin to the joys of vauxhall confined to the driveway for now
40:23he's seven months old as you can see um he kind of likes it i think don't you can you
40:31remember
40:31sitting on your parents knee doing this definitely yeah i definitely can
40:37things like this it sticks in your mind you teach your kids what things that you enjoy so so they
40:43enjoy
40:44them you know he was crying a minute ago you know and and look at him now he's more than
40:48happy just to
40:49be bouncing up and down in the car yeah no very impressed with it aren't you son
41:00this beaver isn't john's first rodeo no no i know this is a brave thing to say but i'm going
41:07to say
41:07well over six or seven hundred cars in in my lifetime sorry i was six or seven hundred yeah yeah
41:13i used
41:14to go down the local auction at about 12 year old or 13 year old and if there was a
41:20car that didn't sell
41:21i used to give 40 50 quid for it if there's something i think that's cheap i'll buy it and
41:28that was a thousand pound that little car it was a non-runner i just took a gamble you know
41:36and it paid off
41:42it drives lovely to be honest the suspension the steering's so light and yeah it's lovely
41:50it sounds very vain but it's nice to have people turn around and look and and and smile
41:56it just makes their day really and it makes my day it's lovely
42:05i'll be totally open and honest i i i've suffered from depression anxiety and i still do and and i
42:14i
42:14was diagnosed with fibromyalgia three years ago it's an awful disease condition whatever you want to
42:20call it i suppose before i knew i had it i self-medicated with alcohol and now i don't drink
42:27at
42:27all as sad as this sounds i get up in the morning i see the car and and whatever i've
42:35done to it the day
42:36before ever and i'm proud of that all you've got to do is focus on something and life's good basically
42:44so the car has helped certainly you a little bit of a difficult point in life and and it will
42:51bring
42:51a lot of joy to to austin as well once in future years the the car that saved his dad
42:57yeah you could
42:59say that when he's five six years old old enough to appreciate and understand the car i think he'll
43:08love it and there'll be something we can do together on it as well and that must mean the world
43:12oh it
43:13does yeah i mean austin means the world my partner means the world to me but the car is a
43:19close second
