United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby discusses the company's planning scenario for rising fuel costs, emphasizing that while significant, it will not be a crisis comparable to the COVID-19 pandemic.

00:00As high as $75,000, you remain above $100,000 through the end of 2027, and most importantly, your annual
00:08fuel bill could increase by $11 billion.
00:13Do you feel like this temporary cost is helping? I know that stocks were up, but...
00:18You know, I'm not going to change my forecast yet. And it's not really a forecast, it's a planning scenario,
00:24but I think it's reasonable.
00:25It's not a worst case if I am stretching that station. It certainly could be better, I hope it finds
00:31out better, but as I, like, I'll spare you my detailed analysis,
00:35but as I look through it, it feels like a reasonable scenario, and I can hope it's better.
00:41But also the downside of taking some action is pretty limited.
00:47Like, all we're really doing, we're not changing anything about the Wonka, like, literally nothing at all about we're making
00:52just as much investment in aircraft.
00:54We're going to actually try to double down on the technology investment as we go through this.
00:58We're going to increase the investment in the future.
01:00And in the short term, though, we should apply airplanes that can't cover the cost of fuel.
01:05And, you know, a red-eye flight can't cover the cost of fuel. It makes no sense to do that.
01:09So we're going to take action earlier and, like, you know, this will never be a crisis, even if it's
01:14as high as it is described as anything like COVID.
01:16But the same playbook exists, like, stay ahead of the curve.
01:21Don't let hope be a strategy. Stay ahead of the curve.
01:24And if you stay ahead of the curve, you come through it stronger.
01:28And we have competitors that are not going to stay ahead of the curve and start with a worse position.
01:32And we'll be able to take advantage of that on the other side.
01:34We'll be able to take advantage of that on the other side.
