00:45:35And drunkenness was all the rage.
00:45:38This is what the historians call the gin craze.
00:45:42Back in 1689, the Irish government forbid the importation of old liquor.
00:45:49So, of course, people started making their own.
00:45:52The temptation was too great.
00:45:54Now, back in Dublin, every sixth house was a gin house.
00:45:58With a sign in the window that said, drunk for a penny.
00:46:02Dead drunk for tuppence.
00:46:05And clean straw for nothing.
00:46:08But it was a terrible time of crime and poverty.
00:46:16Now, inside Arthur Guinness was a devout Christian.
00:46:20Now, he was there under the presence of John Wesley.
00:46:23He used to say, earn all you can.
00:46:28Save all you can.
00:46:30Give all you can.
00:46:32So Arthur Guinness, he saw there was a need.
00:46:36And he created a drink that was less potent than the alcoholic beverages.

00:59:13malty beer called Doppelbock for Lent. You see they weren't allowed to eat solid food for 40 days
00:59:20and beer was the next best thing. This beer was so nutritious that it nourished
00:59:26then for the entire 40 days of the fast. And this is our version. It's quite tasty.
00:59:41Lent is a funny thing. It's kind of like our own personal sacrifice to God.

00:59:52Made a friend back in Ireland. Brewmaster was a little too close to his own work,
00:59:58if you know what you mean. As he gave up drinking his own brew for 40 days,
