00:00Recently, South Korea's president, Yoon Suk-yeol, said that his nation and the U.S.
00:04were currently discussing joint nuclear exercises on the peninsula,
00:08all after North Korea's recent intercontinental ballistic missile tests
00:11and after North Korean drones were discovered crossing the DMZ.
00:14But then, President Biden said that wasn't true,
00:17and the U.S. has no intention of discussing nuclear maneuvers with South Korea.
00:21So, what's actually happening on the peninsula?
00:23Since Biden's statement, the administration has reiterated their continued support of Seoul,
00:27specifically with regards to countering the threat from the North.
00:30And that's likely part of what President Yoon was talking about.
00:33He recently made a statement discussing what he calls war preparation with North Korea,
00:37calling for an overwhelming show of its capability,
00:40explaining during the interview, quote,
00:42the nuclear weapons belong to the United States,
00:44but planning, information sharing, exercises, and training
00:47should be jointly conducted by South Korea and the United States.
00:50With the Biden administration saying that tabletop exercises were likely in the future,
00:54and that his negative response about joint nuclear exercises
00:57were simply in reference to the fact that South Korea has no arsenal of its own.
