00:02The daily commute is becoming a costly affair and the government says it wants to help.
00:08Real help right now when we know families are needing this support.
00:13It's announced a 20 per cent rebate on the registration drivers paid this financial year.
00:18So those who've paid a $930 rego will get $186 back.
00:24It only applies to light vehicles for personal use like cars, utes and motorbikes capped at two vehicles per person.
00:32Everything's so expensive at the moment so any money you can get back the better.
00:37You'll take it?
00:38Yeah, 20 per cent off whatever we're paying is a lot of money.
00:41It sounds pretty good. You're not going to complain about that I guess.
00:45The rebate can be applied for from June through the Service Victoria app drawing scepticism from the opposition.
00:52It's a great big cruel hoax offered with a clawed hand.
00:57We understand with that process most Victorians won't firstly find the form and secondly go through the process to get
01:07the money.
01:07This concession is going to make a real difference right now for those living on the poverty line,
01:13living day to day, moment to moment.
01:15But what we really need the government to look at is long term solutions.
01:18The one off rebate will cost $750 million in foregone revenue.
01:25That's in addition to the recently extended free public transport scheme costing taxpayers $400 million.
01:32If we're already $200 billion in debt, how are we paying for these things?
01:37Well I say to Victorians, all of you are paying for it.
01:39We can also deliver this cut to a government fee or charge because we are delivering a budget that will
01:47be an operating surplus.
01:49Applications for the rebate will be open for two months.
