06:12a podcast fantastic Fletcher how about you well I did my interview with the Wiggles I saw that
06:20very very good what's the best part about being a wiggle best thing about being a wiggle I think
06:26Fletcher is getting a chance to meet people like you did you enjoy it yes I did what were they
06:32like
06:34like come straight out of TV what about you Bethany I got to work at a festival actually
06:41I did that with Angus and we got to invite people from the festival like musicians to come and sit

06:52Angus
06:52is working at Triple J that's fantastic very exciting I am so proud of all the incredible
07:00things that the students have done since they appeared on the assembly but more than that I'm
07:05just so thrilled at watching their confidence develop would you like me to tell you who our
07:10first guest is going to be for this he is one half of Australia's most famous comedy duo he is
07:18a quiz master
07:19he is an internationally successful author do you want to have a stab at guessing who it is Thomas
07:25Andy Lee it is Andy Lee yes good guess what do you know about him Thomas the fact that he's
07:36done do not
07:37open this book he's done the hundred we are back a brand new season of the hundred only made possible
07:42by the people up there he's um from Hamish and Andy he's done gap here hello there you promise me
07:48you'll see me down there yeah I'll see you down there he's also been nominated for gold logies and he
08:05has won a logie with Hamish yeah they're very very popular well we thought we'd give it a try I
08:10would
08:11be blind and Hamish would be deaf for 50 hours guys I just want to take this opportunity to but
08:16tell
08:16you both that Hamish watch his bum from the front he does Anastasia you seem pretty excited about Andy
08:25I was actually recently watching do not watch the show and I watched the first episode and I thought it
08:30was like really really really funny this is the first person who made a cartoon show that's coming
08:40on the show and I'm really excited to be talking about animation with him I haven't got time for you
08:47today shall we split into our group let's do our groups all right all righty let's start hearing our
09:02questions for Andy Lee I gotta get my notebook out do I have a question about how he got bent
09:08from the
09:08Olympic Village I know you're all very excited about Andy his questions I come up with a very
09:17cheeky oh okay I like it when you're cheeky I have did just a tiny bit of research on that
09:25tiny I researched
09:28that he's always checking in with his friends and maybe he may have had a friend that committed suicide
09:33yeah that's something good thinking coming back to the assembly I'm doing a lot more research I'm
09:40not afraid to ask the hard questions yep that's a good question do we like Andy's comedy I associate
09:48him and Hamish together yeah what fascinates me about Andy is the whole comedy duo thing I like Andy Lee
09:57a
09:58lot but what I also find interesting about Andy Lee is he's often pushed behind Hamish and doesn't get
10:04the success that he probably deserves because he is a very funny guy and he is funny he is like
10:12he can
10:13stand on his own two feet he seems to have a love for Australian architecture if he bought that mansion
10:18he's doing up as well yeah I think it was built 1874 oh that's interesting okay Evie I've written six
10:26good I heard about dinner watch the show and I know he made I was like oh that was him
10:30so then I was
10:31like okay I need to watch it now and I've watched it I was like oh my gosh did you
10:35like it I loved it
10:37one of my dreams is to be a voice actor and I also very loved drawing so I'm very excited
10:44to meet
10:44Andy Lee all right Thomas what do you reckon okay are there any more do not open this books in
10:51the
10:51works and I've already put some suggestions do not open this book I beg you do not open this book
10:58now
10:58go away listen to me do not open this book do not open this book or you'll be sorry do
11:06not be an
11:07idiot and do not open this book I said for the last time do not open this book can I
11:15just say
11:16they're amazing they are so brilliant I would publish every single one of those good work gang see you
11:34at the interview are you okay on the stage yeah I'm doing fine just a bit nervous that's all we
11:39all get a bit nervous I'm just hoping that and he doesn't know me because right now I'm about to
11:43angie for you so do you know what I do sometimes before an interview if I'm getting a bit overwhelmed
11:47and a bit stressed just do some good deep breathing okay I do that too let's do some box breathing
11:52everyone
11:52together okay so in for hold for four out for four see how that comes you down thank you can
12:13I say I'm a
12:16big fan of your show thank you even though you've been told not to watch them I didn't realize there's
12:32a bunch of rebels here all right Andrew do you want to kick us off thank you hello Andy I'm
12:39Andrew welcome
12:40hello Andrew this is a safe place everyone can relax and be themselves there'll be no judgment please
12:48do what you need to join in for example fidget move take a break ask you anything to help you
12:55to be
12:55included welcome Andy I feel very welcome thank you very much Andrew Savannah hello Andy hey Savannah we're a
13:05collective of autistic journalism students and we are very happy to have you join us today I'm very
13:11happy to be here oh our rules are no subject is out of bounds maybe I'm not happy to be
13:18here no I am I
13:22am sorry about it okay our rules are no subject is out of bounds no question is off the table
13:28and
13:29anything might happen welcome to the assembly thank you very much our first question is going to be
13:37from Fletcher yeah a lot of luck with the ladies and now engaged I am still looking for my first
13:43girlfriend do you remember your first girlfriend and can you pass on any tips on how to get girls that
13:48are much better looking than you yes I do have experience in dating people that are far more
13:58attractive than me thank you for pointing that out to be honest be yourself Fletcher the one thing
14:06that I find really interesting about dating and when I was single people would be telling you what to do
14:11and don't text her this day but make sure you wait three days and do this and I found that
14:16really hard
14:18and overwhelming and so as soon as I went back to just being myself if I liked someone I'd ask
14:24them
14:25out if they said no that's okay I didn't waste time on it so I think being yourself it's it's
14:33lovely when
14:34you find someone that's really compatible with you and so that person will also come to you thank you
14:39Wendy thank you Fletcher hey Andy I'm Finn hey Finn were there any moments on the show Hamish and Andy's
14:47Gap here when you were genuinely fearful of your life yeah we went and jumped off a bridge in Bosnia
14:54oh in a place called Mostar and the bridge was 25 meters high and I'm not particularly scared of
15:03heights Hamish is so I thought this would be I organized this one I jumped off first it was
15:11extremely painful I bruised every vertebrae in my back but after I felt my pain I was completely
15:19winded and I got to the edge of the river and I told the cameraman tell him not to jump
15:25tell him not
15:26to jump and the cameraman was kind of half not paying attention to me because Hamish had already
15:31stepped over the rail yeah that's the time I felt the most scared for my friend and thought we
15:39shouldn't be doing this so yeah please no one go and do that yes and it's not like the books
15:46it's
15:46like do not do that you still do it okay this one's a do not do that Oliver hi Andy
15:52you and Hamish
15:53started on the same track fast forward to now Hamish has a wife two kids and a calendar full of
16:00school
16:00pickups you've got a fiancee no kids and a giant renovation project who's really winning at life
16:06me next question no um it's an interesting thing to ask winning at life it's completely down to the
16:19person and what makes them happy I'm absolutely content with my fiancee and trying to build a
16:23house and my dog but um we always measure success by sometimes money or happiness and all those type
16:32of things it's it's tough when it comes to power or money because I've got a friend of mine who
16:37just
16:38works nine to five labouring clocks off goes to the pub hangs out with his friends has the best time
16:42doesn't worry about work and I actually think he's the most successful because he's winning life
16:47because it's exactly what he wants to do and he feels really content so if you're content with
16:51what you're doing I think you're winning life thank you very much Abby your go why did it take you
16:58forever to propose to Beck oh Abby you've got to do your proper due diligence you know several
17:06references background checks I had several private investigators follow Beck for numerous years
17:13gather all the data to make sure she's the right one for me um the the real reason is we're
17:19just
17:19having so much fun I knew Beck was the one for me um pretty early but uh when you're having
17:27fun and
17:27you've got other things to do um it didn't quite feel like the right time and certainly we've both
17:33grown together and individually and I think making a big life decision whether it's marriage or any of
17:39those things it's really nice to do it on a really stable footing when both people in the
17:45relationship are feeling really comfortable and really sure of themselves and Beck and I had got to
17:50that place so that's where I felt like it was the right time to to get married well I do
17:54love a good
17:54wedding um was there a time when opening up to a friend made a real difference in your life
18:03yeah yeah yeah yeah it's um I think we can carry things quite heavy uh at times and uh this
18:13one
18:14this came to me because I was carrying something quite heavy and I did go and seek therapy I thought
18:20I sought counseling for that um and when I was younger I was like counseling's for wusses what's
18:27all that about I really didn't believe yeah that was the not not the that was not the way that
18:31I kind
18:32of viewed the world and as I got older and realized that I was troubling being troubled I felt I
18:38really
18:39have to turn to someone talking to a therapist they just said you need to tell more people about this
18:47and when people say that saying a problem shared is a problem halved there is a truth to that I
18:52think
18:52it's really important that you can feel a sense of relief but also you can gather intel on how you
18:59might
18:59find a solution when when you share these type of problems so yeah that was really helpful well I
19:05think it's really important to have friends absolutely yeah Savannah have you ever been arrested
19:12all gone all gone to jail I haven't been arrested I have been put in the back of a divvy
19:20van though
19:21what's a divvy van a divvy van is the uh the police car that looks like a nice station wagon
19:28but instead of the back of it where you put your surfboards and your dog sometimes they put the
19:31criminals so it's not a nice place to be and it's a cage inside that and I was involved in
19:36a pub fight
19:38when I was 19 years old and uh the police came and they grabbed me and they put me in
19:46the back of
19:47a divvy van so I was scared and I thought am I going to end up in jail is where
19:52does this where does
19:53this go from here um but thankfully after everything had calmed down they they let me out and uh and
19:59I
19:59got to go home thank you Andy thank you Willow mine is Willow hello Willow you lost your tooth during
20:09an ice game instant you had to have a cow bone screwed to your into your teeth does that make
20:15you feel
20:16weird when you eat steak sorry I've never thought about that I mean I might feel weird now and I'll
20:26be
20:26thinking I'll be thinking of you every time I have a steak the steaks are getting high
20:36so yes I lost these two front teeth are fake yeah they came I smashed them playing ice hockey with
20:43Hamish so I had to have them taken out and I've got a titanium tooth in they screw it in
20:49the cow bones
20:50and then they had to rebuild my jawline with cow bone you're right Willow so they used cow bone
20:56and they layer the bone in there and that molds to my bone but I wondered whether I'm now half
21:01man
21:01half cow you know I do sleep standing up and uh I get scared of lightning so um yeah but
21:09uh no the
21:10steak thing um I'll think of you every time now oh no I'm out of yeah thank you thank you
21:16thank you
21:16Willow and here take care of us all right hello Andy um I'm Anastasia lovely to meet you all right
21:23uh when we interviewed Hamish on this area I asked him what are the pros and cons about you oh
21:31and he
21:32was actually really honest so oh no oh yeah yeah you already know what's coming so let's go the
21:40opposite way now what are the pros and cons about Hamish right I'll start with the pros
21:49oh he's so funny but beyond funniness he's an amazing friend so I always felt that we're going
21:56to be on great adventures and when you catch up with Haim you know something fun is going to happen
22:02and they're the best type of friends for me you know when you can go and have fun
22:05and it's not saying that every friend has to be this outrageously funny adventurous person but
22:11that's what draws me to Haim and I just never get sick of him cons here's the list I prepared
22:18earlier
22:21he knew this was coming so he came prepared
22:25Hamish as he puts it himself is fast and loose so he's very unpredictable at times which makes him a
22:32lot of fun but also you can be left going where is he is he coming no one knows I
22:40remember one day
22:40we're meant to be writing because we're hosting an awards ceremony and I'm sitting at the cafe
22:46and 10 minutes goes past and I'm thinking oh yeah that's that's normally about the time he's late
22:50he's always late 15 minutes better call him maybe he hasn't forgotten and I called him
22:57and he picks up the phone and says do you think we need a radar gun and I said what
23:04what are you
23:04talking about he said I'm at the cricket shop it could be fun for us to see how fast we're
23:09bowling
23:11now neither of us really play cricket but this is the impulse nature of Haim he gets on the scent
23:17of
23:17something like an excitable dog hound and off he goes and it normally follows fun and adventure so
23:23his con is also I've benefited from many many times okay my next question is what is your advice
23:31to someone who wants to be a voice actor try different voices definitely like this one yes
23:40but when you're doing it always stand up unless unless the character's sitting but make sure you
23:48express like people always think that they're going to be in there and they're just talking to a
23:51microphone doing this that's true yeah like crazy and be like do not even watch this show that's
23:57exactly right you will sound much better if you really expressive so if I'm doing whiz I'm always
24:03sitting there I always go long and round because that's how I get try and get in there there you
24:08go
24:08and then I'll go no you shouldn't be watching and I speak with my arms like wow that's not entirely
24:16true
24:18that's right so be really expressive and if you're meant to be pulling something like pulling a door
24:23we have rubber bands in there like big right and I go yeah yeah and so you can make all
24:28those sounds
24:29so enjoy it when you get in there because you've got very good at voices next question is uh whiz
24:35would
24:35normally lie to the audience in do not open this book and do not watch the show what is the
24:42biggest lie
24:42you have told and does it affect you to this day oh there are some lies I've told that I
24:52won't tell
24:53you today I know we're meant to share everything don't worry but they generally involve um
25:00holding a secret for someone else and someone that might have been in trouble
25:06and there are there are times that you can hold onto that for too long
25:10and then someone does the wrong thing wow and so if someone is in trouble sorry
25:20you don't always have to hold it on and pretend to everyone else that it's fine
25:28do you want some tissues or anything yeah sorry one second the tissue girl is back again
25:39this one used um no it's not i get them second hand hey
25:46hello andy i'm andrew your book is titled don't open this book
25:51did it ever cross your mind that some kids especially autistic kids might literally follow
25:56instructions and never open it i have seen some children too scared to open it yes or they're just
26:05very obedient um and then there's normally a teacher there yes or uh or a parent that can help them
26:13and encourage them to take that risk oh good uh but yes it's it's it's been a book that i
26:18didn't
26:18realize would resonate with people with autism as much as it has yes uh i've had schools from all
26:25over the world reach out to me autistic schools from all over the world reach out to me saying that
26:29the book really resonates with the class oh thank you andy thank you dale you're next hi andy hey dale
26:36good to meet you you and hamish actually snuck into the olympic village in 2012 and got banned for
26:41life which is pretty legendary if you could sneak into any global event today just for the jokes and
26:47banter which event would it be and what would you do once inside oh wow i would have loved to
26:54get to the king's coronation we want a uppity suit maybe a top hat but the real question is what
27:03would you do inside i would have had to use his wizard's voice i reckon just to kind of fit
27:06in
27:11i would have had a good time sniggering at um people thinking they're more important than they
27:16are or something like that awesome thank you thank you uh dale do you want to pass along to mitch
27:21um
27:23what were your original plans before becoming a comedian i wanted to be an accountant really
27:31yeah so i love numbers i love spreadsheets um and i love schedules uh there's one incident mitch that
27:39made me change my mind i was finishing year 12 and i was going to do some accounting work for
27:46the good
27:46guys electrical company so i went and worked there and i spent three days cancelling checks instead of
27:53presenting them accidentally and i cancelled 80 million dollars worth of checks and back then
28:01we only backed up our system once a week and it was for the whole company so they found out
28:08about
28:08lunchtime on a wednesday everyone at the company had to do all the work that they'd done for monday
28:12tuesday and a half of wednesday again and i didn't feel great about that oh i quit oh no i
28:19went and had
28:19a summer which i probably should have been doing anyway and i went into university and changed it
28:23to marketing and brand management and somehow you landed in comedy that's right yeah all right um
28:29your mom had a near um death experience do you think your mom is a fighter and are you proud
28:34of her
28:37um yeah my mom was given two weeks to live in 1996 and she's still here so that's annoying
28:48uh it was it was it was tough it was a tough time i was 15 um my mom forgot
28:53how to walk how to talk
28:54who we all were uh so every day after school i'd reintroduce myself because she wouldn't even remember
28:59from the day before you know mum was the first to survive it in australia cerebral vasculitis is the
29:04name of her please um and it's like a mini mini strokes um you have any of the body but
29:10mum had it in
29:10the brain um when mum came back home that was hard because she got a culture shock i was i'm
29:20a mummy's
29:21boy still but i was a mummy's boy and she'd be making my lunch before i go to school and
29:24all these
29:24things and we'd all become self-sufficient and then mum was quite confused that we were just
29:30self-sufficient and then wanted to go back so she didn't want to live with us for a little bit
29:35i found that the hardest and i was angry with her which it can be we've gone we've gone through
29:41all
29:41this and you don't even want to be with us but realizing that that must have been such a shock
29:45to the system she doesn't really remember much of the four to six months she was in hospital
29:49so to go in and then just kind of been transported six months into the future with no recollection of
29:54what's happening around you that was the part that was tough for her and i understand that now but i
29:58i found that the hardest part of it at the time so you reckon she's a fighter she's absolutely a
30:04fighter
30:05um i'm proud of mum and proud that she's still going that's great thanks andy thanks mitch
30:11all right hi andy my name's daniel or dan hey dan i love huskies and i rescued a husky called
30:18spike
30:19my question is do you like huskies and if you don't i hate you and bye get out of here
30:30dan yeah i've got bad news for you i love my fluffy dog
30:35but i've got a reason why don't tell me you don't love that fluffy snow dog
30:39i've got i've got i've got a reason why dan so because i'm a bit traumatized
30:44okay okay yeah hamish and i flew to a glacier in alaska and we met all the husky snow dogs
30:54yeah and then hamish's surprise had bought me a suit can entirely made out of meat
30:59and he organized a race between me and 12 huskies
31:07so i was running through the snow as 12 huskies came for me
31:11i didn't make it to the finish line and they all got me and ate me
31:14all right thank you thank you daniel ciao it's your turn um someone once said um no one is just
31:22one
31:22thing right that's true as being part of a very famous comedy duo um how did you feel when you're
31:29boxed into being described to be the straight man of the two of us certainly i had my own worries
31:35about
31:36do i exist without hamish when we're doing something so strong uh together and i think the
31:44world of the way he performs if i'm without him what am i uh am i good enough we encouraged
31:53each other
31:53from a very early uh very early on to go and do things individually and you learn from that and
32:00you come back and tell the other person um but yeah it i'd be lying to say that i was
32:07wasn't nervous
32:09when i went out on my own to do my own things because i because hamish is a safety blanket
32:16i have to work much harder when i'm not around him
32:22oh regretting the leather pants every time i got a move it's they look cool though so don't don't
32:27regret them thank you so much taking advantage of being cleo's bachelor of the year would you ever
32:32use your looks to star in a movie oh you know what thank you but that was 20 years ago
32:40so i think
32:40this is this has all changed a bit but um it's one of the main reasons i write and create
32:46all my own
32:47things because i tried out for lots of things and no one put me anything um i found it hard
32:52to be
32:53picked you know i'd go for things and and people thought there was a better option and so instead of
33:00continually going down that path and just hoping that i might get picked for something i just thought
33:05okay i'll try and take destiny into my own hands here and i'll write things and put myself in them
33:11and see how they float yeah nice yeah if they don't open up the doors for you create your own
33:15house and
33:16doors that's exactly right so maybe i have to write my own film that's awesome thank you so much thomas
33:22so um so you spoke earlier about um your mother's um diagnosis but not just that there was also the
33:31possibility that you could have died when you were a baby after you were diagnosed with um something
33:38epiglottitis epiglottitis what was your reaction when you first learned about that the story i heard
33:45from my dad which was sad was they were rushing to the hospital and uh and i couldn't breathe at
33:55all
33:56so i was going blue in the back and and he got pulled over by the police and dad said
34:02to the
34:02officer hey look my my son's dying thinking that the policeman might help and and give us away and
34:10the policeman said well he's not dead yet and went on to write up a ticket and so i loved
34:16us you know
34:17i'm all for our service people and the police and so on but this was a singular moment where i
34:20was like
34:20that that's a shame that that happened and that was more troubling to to think about um and then
34:28i mean i was i think one but the other sad part of it was a lady up the road
34:35in the street we grew
34:36up her kid didn't make it had the same thing and didn't make it so mum found it really difficult
34:41to
34:42be walking the pram with me and for a long time just walked down the street instead of up so
34:48it's it's
34:49sad that these little things can happen i was very lucky but also being very mindful that lots
34:54of people aren't i see thank you all right hello andy i'm pat nice to nice to be here nice
35:03to be
35:03here now i've read a lot about your impressive ravenswood mansion but as a bird enthusiast i'm curious
35:10to know what do you think of the ravens that live around ravenswood oh i see the ravens i'm fond
35:16of
35:16the ravens not as fond of the pigeons they keep coming in and pooing all over the place yes so
35:21i
35:21need to work that out we're working with regeneration um environmentalists to get the right plants in and
35:27we're seeing birds already come back which is incredible so um hopefully the place is less about
35:33the house and more about the environment once um we almost settle in there that's great thank you
35:39and i'm glad you like the ravens because most australians don't yeah you're like probably the two
35:43percent that do no i like a raven pat will you pass along to evie yes uh cartoons have had
35:53a huge
35:54impact on me
35:57they are like oxygen since you have a cartoon show now i was wondering what are your favorite cartoons
36:06and did any of them have an influence on you oh yes great question i mean i loved the simpsons
36:14growing up oh good classics they're classic um roger ramjet and mighty mouse when i was a lot littler
36:23you know all like walt disney um the sorcerer's apprentice there's my favorite cartoon of all time
36:33was robin hood have you seen the one with all the with all the where the fox plays robin hood
36:38yeah
36:38yeah yeah i've seen that yeah that was my favorite of all time i used to watch it over and
36:43over and
36:44over again i also did something for you oh wow because i um i um recently watched did not watch
36:54your
36:54show and it is literally everything i've loved about cartoons just the the wit and the writing and the
37:00animation and just the voice acting just i love everything about it and i really wanted
37:04and i really want to be in the industry so i just wanted to show my love for it oh
37:10evie that's
37:11fantastic well we operate out of melbourne but if you're ever down there please reach out
37:16and i'll bring you into the studio and like what you've done here everything is hand-drawn
37:24so that's why it takes so long i didn't realize this i'm in heaven walking amongst them and seeing
37:30what they're doing so you have to come and visit thanks evie silas is there a question you've always
37:37wanted to ask somebody but never had the chance oh yeah generally those ones come to like i wish i'd
37:46ask my grandparents more things that's the one that sits with me you kind of end up being babysat
37:52by them and they just spoil you and it's all about you which is great that's what being a grandparent
37:56is about but when i look back i would have loved to have just showed an interest in them rather
38:02of being all about me i do that with my parents now just spend as much time and asking them
38:07the
38:07questions yeah thank you thanks silas um james hi andy hey james what is one trait you admire
38:16in others um i really admire people's courage and that's not when we talk about being in the front
38:23of an army you know running into battle with a sword there's so many courageous things you can do
38:28and i think the main one for me is when people stand up for what they believe in um even
38:35when
38:36and it could just be a singular moment where someone's saying something that's not quite right
38:40i do admire when people call that behavior out in a pleasant way not combative and and just are
38:47really true to their beliefs i think that's that takes courage well andy it was very courageous you
38:51coming on the show today so i i admire the gusto thank you and gusto to you
38:58okay okay andy thank you so much for taking your time and coming on the show how ever oh gosh
