00:00:17shattered family and questions my phone rang mom and Larry were in some kind of accident on the

00:00:24boat Larry had fallen overboard and they can't find him how was she taking it she was a mess I

00:00:33just held her something's not right they'd never be out there because it was pretty cold is he even

00:00:41in the lake where is he there were a lot of people thinking he had just gone off and was

00:00:47waiting for her to come and bring the bag of money I had no idea of the horror that was

00:00:55to come I went

00:00:56to grab my phone and my mom just said do not answer that when you investigate death a lot

00:01:02of unusual stuff happens when are the lies gonna stop I needed the full story to be told

00:01:19here's Keith Morrison with Killswitch

00:01:40I will run with the others your merchant I'm on the lake but I don't know where

00:01:45lucky is he or she who finds love happy and lasting and true the love that deepens as it ages

00:02:01love that survives the unknown currents of a long life on the cold deep void

00:02:15but nothing is forever

00:02:28this is about the luck that ran out on the morning of February 13th 2018 in the frigid water of

00:02:35Lake

00:02:35Coeur d'Alene he's in the water the desperate woman on the phone was Lori Eisenberg the man in the

00:02:47water her

00:02:48husband and the love of her life Larry she tried to explain that they launched before dawn all bundled up

00:02:55and romantic to watch the sunrise on the water and intended to cruise 16 miles up the lake for a

00:03:01Valentine's breakfast at the big local resort the Coeur d'Alene how far had they gone where was she she

00:03:08didn't know she said hang on one second let me get people going quickly the cell towers triangulated and

00:03:19help went racing toward the spot she was stranded a place called Powderhorn Bay four or five miles from

00:03:26where they started let's talk to her real quick a few minutes later Lori Eisenberg was ashore warming

00:03:33up in a rescue boats cabin when the deputy approached wearing a body cam he said he didn't feel good

00:03:40and

00:03:40he was doing things weird and then he went up to the motor and the motor wasn't broken it was

00:03:45the other

00:03:45motor okay and then I said why are you doing that and he turned to look at me and his

00:03:50face just looked okay

00:03:53it looked awful and then he just started to fall and I tried to get the door open and get

00:04:00to him and I

00:04:00grabbed him and I fell and just like that Lori's long love affair with Larry was over

00:04:15Larry and Lori Eisenberg were in 2018 the elders of a big extended clan that included eight children

00:04:2415 grandchildren and a great-grandchild

00:04:31they were well off they created their own little mountain paradise called Cougar Gulch and they were

00:04:38respected too in North Idaho Larry a retired timber executive and Lori the head of a local nonprofit

00:04:47that connected the poor with homes of their own and after 14 years of marriage and nearly 30 years

00:04:55after first laying eyes on each other Lori and Larry were by all accounts in love to a degree that

00:05:01was

00:05:02almost nauseating I'm just gonna try to ask you some questions so we can kind of figure out where to

00:05:07go

00:05:07from here okay now Larry was gone and deputies found Lori looking like she'd been on the wrong end of

00:05:15a prize fight uh can you tell me uh how'd you get the bloody nose you fell down so she

00:05:23fell against the

00:05:24door okay all right well we're gonna do we got we got the best people out there looking for him

00:05:30right

00:05:30now okay so we're gonna do what we can not that there was much the divers could do and water

00:05:37so

00:05:37cold the body would sink like a stone the lake was a hundred thirty feet deep in Powderhorn Bay

00:05:44before long Lori was taken from the boat to a waiting pickup and then an ambulance and the local

00:05:51hospital and soon word raced around among all six of Lori's daughters this is Amber surprised to get a

00:06:00call from her big sister she says I just got a call from an ambulance mom and Larry were in

00:06:07some kind of

00:06:08accident on the boat and they can't find Larry what do you mean you can't find him she's like I

00:06:14don't

00:06:14know will you please call the other sisters and tell them what's going on and so Amber did this is

00:06:23it was my sister Amber telling me that there had been a boating accident and Larry had fallen overboard

00:06:34and they can't find him it was all so confusing said Larry's son Dean my sister called me and said

00:06:44that there's been an accident and she was in tears I couldn't really figure out what had happened hadn't

00:06:50his father texted him this stunning photo of the sunrise just a few hours earlier and he thought those

00:06:57crazy kids I was just like I can't believe they're going out on the water as cold as it is

00:07:02and I went

00:07:03back to sleep did you respond at all nope I don't think I did I mean it was a gorgeous

00:07:07sunrise don't get

00:07:08me wrong but it's just like they weren't they'd never be out out there doing that it was very very

00:07:14odd oh he

00:07:16had no idea a stunning loss for Lori and her family when we return she was a mess I just

00:07:28held her and

00:07:30promised her that we would help her get through this and years earlier a surprising end to a marriage

00:07:39instead of her going to confront him us kids had to go down and confront him and I remember telling

00:07:47him we want you to leave

00:08:02in February 2018 the waters of Lake Coeur d'Alene were holding fast on the Larry Eisenberg Larry and

00:08:12Lori had launched their romantic sunrise cruise here at Sunup Bay and headed for the big resort

00:08:18up to the top of the lake 16 miles away but four or five miles in around Powderhorn Bay right

00:08:24about

00:08:24here said Lori Larry went to fix something in the bow and then looked around at her and turned a

00:08:32deathly

00:08:32shade of gray and the initial responders they felt fairly confident that it was another tragedy out on the

00:08:44lake a semi-retired detective named Brad Maskell heard about it of course like everybody in town

00:08:52he was just an observer but he knew a thing or two about the lake he'd lived here most of

00:08:58his life what

00:08:59are that cold and that deep around that middle of the lake would you expect his body to sink right

00:09:08down to

00:09:08the bottom yes I can't even think of a case where we had a body go in the in the

00:09:12lake here to that

00:09:14depth and resurface it just doesn't happen in cold deep water at Lori and Larry's homestead in Cougar Gulch

00:09:23just a couple of miles from the lake daughter Chrislin and her sisters gather their mother in a

00:09:29collective hug how was she taking it she was a mess I just held her and promised her that we

00:09:38would help

00:09:38her get through this get through the end of a love story that all along had refused to be denied

00:09:49they'd both been married to others years and years ago Lori had six daughters with Steve her high

00:09:56school sweetheart Amber born third and Chrislin the fourth were the middle children we had the perfect

00:10:03little family you know we went to church every Sunday we we were taught to live right make good

00:10:09choices get good grades do your chores you know the whole nine yards dad ran a janitorial service mom was

00:10:16volunteer of the year at the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce it was exciting things to see our mom

00:10:22becoming this successful woman in their community those years Larry Eisenberg was making money in the

00:10:28timber business he was able to pull over a lot of deals I'd be like the used car salesman of

00:10:33timber

00:10:34for lack of a better or more eloquent term of it he taught his children Dean and Jessica to be

00:10:47tired tired the state of mind don't be lazy you know you only think that you're tired you really

00:10:52haven't done that much today but when he was with his kids when he took Dean hunting I think that

00:10:59was

00:11:00about the happiest I'd ever seen him being with me for my first elk when Larry met Lori it was

00:11:08all

00:11:08perfectly innocent dad ended up hiring hiring her as his secretary when he worked for the timber

00:11:14company Larry was introduced to us as a friend from work and their work trips like this one to the

00:11:22Idaho State Capitol well they were co-workers after all and Lori's daughters were confused when she soon

00:11:30told them that Steve their father simply wasn't good enough and would have to leave and that they

00:11:37the kids would have to tell him my mom started like having some kind of a breakdown she like went

00:11:45into the

00:11:46closet and instead of her going to confront him us kids had to go down and confront him while she

00:11:53stayed in the

00:11:54closet and I remember yelling at him and telling him we want you to leave oh my we don't want

00:12:00you here and he just

00:12:01looked right back at me and he said Amber you don't know what you're talking about my dad knew and

00:12:08not

00:12:09just Larry she had been having affairs for quite a while other men too he wasn't the first so maybe

00:12:16they weren't so straight arrow honest after all Lori got a divorce and then a few years later Larry did

00:12:25too and

00:12:26everybody could see how happy they were when they brought their families together and got married

00:12:32I just decided I've always always loved and respected Larry and I saw my mom happy with him and I

00:12:39was

00:12:39happy for her and then they turned Cougar Gulch into their own very special place it was a mountain

00:12:46paradise I absolutely loved it they landscaped the place put in huge gardens and a pond they filled with

00:12:53fish to catch Larry built a working windmill if I could describe my perfect house if that's what it

00:12:59would be that's what they had in Cougar Gulch they traveled to Hawaii Europe they fished the lakes hunted

00:13:09the forests together he always looked at her with eyes of just admiration and he would always just tell

00:13:19us just how amazing she was and we would all kind of just roll our eyes like you two are

00:13:24unbelievable

00:13:25like how do you get a room how do you love each other this much by 2018 Larry was 68

00:13:34and retired

00:13:35Lori was 64 still working hi I'm Lori Eisenberg executive director of the North Idaho Housing Coalition

00:13:43Lori ran that nonprofit that helped low-income residents buy houses Larry kept track of their

00:13:50investments and was happy as happy as he'd ever been in January 2018 just over a month before Larry was

00:14:02lost in the lake they gathered with members of their blended family in Florida so every day he would say

00:14:09if anyone wants to come come on the walk with me and that day for the first time really ever

00:14:14I said Larry

00:14:15where did you learn to have such great discipline with your money and he told us that day that he

00:14:24remembers from the time he could count money his parents were teaching him you have to earn every

00:14:31dollar and you have to know and track where you spend every dollar that have a big effect on you

00:14:37to hear

00:14:38that yeah it empowered me to be a parent that teaches those principles didn't you sit down at

00:14:43the computer at one point and kind of go over everything so yeah we sat right there at the table

00:14:49my mom hanging over Larry looking at their computer of all their stocks when you think about that

00:14:54conversation now does anything stay with you it's sad it's so sad to know that my mom knew

00:15:04it's so hard to believe that she could sit there and do that with us knowing all that she knew

00:15:10something about Larry about the love of her life

00:15:16coming up the mystery of what happened on that boat

00:15:21she has bruises all over her legs and she just said I have no idea what I did on that

00:15:27boat

00:15:28when Dateline continues

00:15:45there's a process when a boating accident takes a life has to be an investigation which is why a few

00:15:51days after the horrible loss of Larry Eisenberg in Lake Coeur d'Alene detectives went to Cougar Gulch to dive

00:15:59deeper that first day Lori had been such a mess and sometimes a day or three later a person has

00:16:07a clearer

00:16:07sense of what happened there was a timeline to consider for context so could they go through

00:16:13that again they asked well yes said Lori they could 6 40 a.m. they took this picture of the

00:16:21sunrise said

00:16:22Lori and sent it by text to Larry's son Dean this was as they prepared to launch their boat at

00:16:29sunup bay

00:16:30did you take it or did he take it

00:16:32like the picture oh he did actually right after he took the picture we stood there for a couple minutes

00:16:39once they were out on the water she said Larry took the wheel of the boat as she dozed off

00:16:45in the

00:16:45passenger seat cabin warmed by a space heater then said Lori at some point Larry's hand sort of slipped off

00:16:53the dashboard and not just a little slip certainly got her attention it was so hard did it the whole

00:17:01ignition thing sort of popped out the kill switch had been knocked out the ignition key bent like this

00:17:10you know when it started when it started when it started she tried bending the key back and forth

00:17:15so then said Lori Larry went up to the front of the boat to get the electric trolling motor going

00:17:22and then something happened to him looked like he was having a stroke or something

00:17:27he just had this sort of blank look on his face and so then I saw him sort of stumbling

00:17:34I jumped up and I couldn't get and I banged my head where did you hit your head at on

00:17:39your face

00:17:41I don't remember but where do you recall the blood coming from my nose and that certainly made sense of

00:17:48what they found in the bow drops and smears of blood right where Lori said she hit her head

00:17:53as she tried to reach him I saw his face and then he just

00:17:59so arms out stress just kind of fell

00:18:01okay okay

00:18:03and I couldn't get to in my drive

00:18:07she panicked then tried to get to him she said all but went into the water herself

00:18:12and then I finally calmed down to the point where I said what am I doing this isn't helping any

00:18:17couldn't call 9-1-1 she said didn't have her phone

00:18:20I'd left it in the truck because I always forget it

00:18:24and I thought his was in his pocket

00:18:28in the lake in other words

00:18:30and by the time she found Larry's phone under a blanket more than two hours had gone by since he'd

00:18:36fallen in

00:18:37so it was 10 23 a.m. before she could place that 9-1-1 call

00:18:42he's in the water

00:18:48where was Larry

00:18:50somewhere she said in the four or five miles of water between sunup bay where Larry and Lori put in

00:18:56the boat

00:18:56and here in powder horn bay where Lori was rescued

00:19:01the detectives thanked her expressed their sympathy and left

00:19:07the day after the incident meanwhile

00:19:09Lori's six daughters gathered around her in grief at Cougar Gulch

00:19:14we were all just standing around making breakfast

00:19:16she came into the kitchen and all of a sudden she just said

00:19:19I was just in the bathroom and I saw my legs

00:19:23and she just pulls down and shows us that she has bruises

00:19:26all over her legs

00:19:28her thighs are just black and blue

00:19:31and she just said

00:19:32I have no idea what I did on that boat

00:19:35I must have just been hitting my legs when I was looking for Larry in the water

00:19:41and none of them imagined

00:19:43as they sympathized with their mother

00:19:45and mourned their loss Larry

00:19:47that certain preparations would soon be underway downtown

00:19:52some unwelcome visitors would be coming to call

00:19:57coming up

00:19:58such an handcuff sir

00:20:00Lori arrested but not for what you might think

00:20:04I had no idea of any of the horror that was to come

00:20:2910 days after the terrible incident in the lake

00:20:36it's generally quite a shock for most anybody

00:20:38to hear policemen with warrants and loud demands at their door

00:20:42Lori had been in bed resting

00:20:45when they charged in and scooped up her computers

00:20:48and electronics and boxes of records

00:20:51and then took them all away

00:20:54but why?

00:20:56why those things?

00:20:59Lori was left to settle whatever astonishment she may have felt and straighten the place up

00:21:04then a few days later

00:21:06daughter Chrislyn was visiting

00:21:07and many of the same law officers suddenly appeared on the porch

00:21:12as seen here on police body cam

00:21:14hi

00:21:15Lori here

00:21:17Chrislyn didn't quite get it at first

00:21:20she said she's not up to it

00:21:22not up to it?

00:21:23but yeah

00:21:23she's just really struggling

00:21:25okay

00:21:25she said can we reschedule or?

00:21:29um no

00:21:30okay

00:21:31so then

00:21:32Lori finally appeared

00:21:34I'm just really drained right now

00:21:36are you arresting me?

00:21:39I think I'm going to put you under arrest

00:21:40these guys are going to take you into custody right now

00:21:42it was crazy said Chrislyn

00:21:44like Kafka or something

00:21:47in that moment I was

00:21:49I had no idea

00:21:51I was just in shock

00:21:53put your knee cuts here

00:22:00Chrislyn's sweet mother

00:22:01going to jail

00:22:03what was that like to discover that this had happened?

00:22:06it was very overwhelming

00:22:08and it was very disappointing

00:22:10and confusing

00:22:13confusing?

00:22:14oh yes

00:22:15because

00:22:16Lori's arrest had nothing whatever to do with what happened out on the lake

00:22:21they didn't charge her with that

00:22:24not with dangerous boating or anything like that

00:22:27not at all

00:22:29as the jailer who booked her made perfectly clear

00:22:32um I'm being told to

00:22:34write your booking sheet out for

00:22:36one count of grand theft

00:22:38and 40 counts of forgery

00:22:42grand theft

00:22:43forgery?

00:22:45sometimes bad news comes in batches

00:22:48and this

00:22:49just as she was trying to deal with the loss of Larry

00:22:52was another story altogether

00:22:55why do things happen this way?

00:22:59anyway

00:22:59here's the story

00:23:00a few weeks before that fatal boating trip

00:23:03just after Larry and Lori had returned

00:23:05glowing from their Florida family vacation

00:23:08Larry got busy preparing for their next trip

00:23:11which they intended to start pretty much right away

00:23:15and as they did every year

00:23:17they organized meticulously

00:23:19they'd load up the camper trailer with their canned vegetables

00:23:23and what they raised and grew and caught

00:23:25and hunted

00:23:27and then they'd spend like two months

00:23:29in like Utah

00:23:30Zion National Park

00:23:31Arizona out in the desert

00:23:33hiking around the California coast

00:23:36while Larry was busy with the camper

00:23:38Lori drove into downtown Coeur d'Alene

00:23:41to get things sorted out of the office

00:23:43a last pre-trip board meeting

00:23:44at the North Idaho Housing Coalition

00:23:46Lori ran the place

00:23:48but Carrie Thorison

00:23:50as coalition president

00:23:51was officially her boss

00:23:53Lori did an excellent job

00:23:57for years

00:23:59when Amy Evans joined the board

00:24:01Lori had long since proved

00:24:03how much she cared about the mission

00:24:06she was passionate about helping

00:24:09young families obtain their first home

00:24:13which made Lori's visit to the office

00:24:16that January day in 2018

00:24:18more than a little awkward

00:24:21the board had found some

00:24:24financial irregularities

00:24:25some budgets that didn't quite add up

00:24:28checks that should have been signed by the board

00:24:30but were signed by Lori

00:24:35she apologized and said

00:24:37I just know that all of you are so busy

00:24:42I didn't want to bother you

00:24:44to come and sign checks

00:24:46so I just signed them

00:24:49well really?

00:24:51well it's just being so thoughtful to us

00:24:54at that point we thought

00:24:55we'll put her on administrate

00:24:58paid administrative leave

00:25:00which won't alarm her too much

00:25:03and give us the opportunity

00:25:04to recover our records

00:25:07did you?

00:25:08that is what we did

00:25:10coalition board vice president

00:25:12Amy Evans was also in that meeting with Lori

00:25:16she pled with us

00:25:18two times to just fire her

00:25:21really?

00:25:22I mean she

00:25:22she basically copped to it

00:25:24she said yes I made some mistakes

00:25:27so really if she had

00:25:29you figured she'd be coming back

00:25:30once you figured this out

00:25:32right?

00:25:32yeah we were

00:25:34hopeful that this was just

00:25:36sloppy bookkeeping

00:25:37though Carrie Thorison

00:25:39kept thinking of a strange little moment

00:25:42as their meeting turned to

00:25:44sensitive things

00:25:45she turned her head to me

00:25:49and looked at me

00:25:51I can still remember

00:25:54just feeling a chill

00:25:58we can't know what Lori was thinking

00:26:01or feeling

00:26:02on her drive home to Cougar Gulch

00:26:04where Larry was getting ready

00:26:05for their excellent adventure road trip

00:26:07was she distraught?

00:26:10did she lean on her man

00:26:12pour out her troubles?

00:26:14all we can say with certainty

00:26:16is what happened next

00:26:18Larry and Lori did indeed

00:26:20hit the road

00:26:22but it was not the trip

00:26:24Larry was planning for

00:26:27coming up

00:26:29what a long strange trip

00:26:31it would be

00:26:32Lori said honey

00:26:33I want to go back to Florida

00:26:34hadn't they just been there?

00:26:36yeah they'd just gotten back

00:26:38when Dateline continues

00:26:52there's often a pivot point

00:26:54in family drama

00:26:55isn't there?

00:26:56somebody makes a decision

00:26:58and things suddenly change

00:27:00that was about to happen

00:27:02in Cougar Gulch

00:27:03three weeks before

00:27:04the boating accident

00:27:05Larry was going about

00:27:06his happy-go-lucky retirement

00:27:07as usual

00:27:08Dad's idea of retirement

00:27:10was to do what you want

00:27:11when you want

00:27:13whenever you want

00:27:14for as long as you want

00:27:16not a bad definition

00:27:17yeah

00:27:19if I want to go do something

00:27:20I'm going to go do something

00:27:21I'll do it until I get sick of it

00:27:23and then I'll come back

00:27:23or I'll go do something else

00:27:26the something else this time

00:27:27was going to be a trip

00:27:28across the American Southwest

00:27:30with Lori

00:27:31completely unaware

00:27:32that Lori had been suspended

00:27:34then fired

00:27:35from her job

00:27:36at the North Idaho Housing Coalition

00:27:38didn't have any idea

00:27:40what Lori's board members

00:27:41were digging up

00:27:42in the coalition's books

00:27:44every day

00:27:45it just kept getting worse

00:27:46and worse

00:27:47and so

00:27:48it quickly made sense

00:27:50why she was asking us

00:27:51to fire her

00:27:52the evidence

00:27:54once they knew

00:27:54where to look

00:27:55was clear

00:27:56Lori had been

00:27:57using her position

00:27:58to steal money

00:28:00for at least three years

00:28:02this was big

00:28:03how much money in total

00:28:05do you think

00:28:06was taken from the organization

00:28:08I think we're

00:28:09probably around

00:28:10900 to a million dollars

00:28:12this is not small change

00:28:14no

00:28:14not at all

00:28:15what was your state of mind

00:28:16those days

00:28:18just complete disbelief

00:28:20that

00:28:21the level of betrayal

00:28:23that

00:28:24Lori

00:28:25executed

00:28:26was unbelievable

00:28:27granted

00:28:28only a few people

00:28:29were aware

00:28:30of

00:28:30any of that

00:28:31or that Lori

00:28:33had been fired

00:28:33we really

00:28:35wanted to

00:28:37protect the integrity

00:28:38of

00:28:39the organization

00:28:41protect

00:28:42Lori's integrity

00:28:43until we knew

00:28:44without a doubt

00:28:45what had happened

00:28:46and while that investigation

00:28:48went on

00:28:49no one knew

00:28:50not her six daughters

00:28:52not her two stepchildren

00:28:53and not Larry

00:28:55so busy planning

00:28:57for their annual

00:28:57trailer trip

00:28:58he was literally

00:28:59loading

00:29:00and stalking

00:29:01the camper

00:29:02and he was

00:29:03in mid-stride

00:29:04with another arm

00:29:05full of goods

00:29:05and uh

00:29:07Lori stopped

00:29:08and said

00:29:09honey

00:29:09I want to go back

00:29:10to Florida

00:29:10hadn't they just

00:29:11been there

00:29:12yeah

00:29:13they'd just

00:29:14gotten back

00:29:14Larry seemed

00:29:16puzzled

00:29:17but all for it

00:29:18but all for it

00:29:19if that's what

00:29:19Lori wanted

00:29:20Larry was kind

00:29:21of like

00:29:23yeah I guess

00:29:24we're going back

00:29:24to Florida

00:29:26so back to Florida

00:29:27they went

00:29:45they went sailing

00:29:47that was a bucket list

00:29:48vacation

00:29:49I mean he always

00:29:50wanted to sail

00:29:51he wanted to see

00:29:52that rocket

00:29:52and he wanted to

00:29:53ride in a fan boat

00:29:54those were like

00:29:55the last three goals

00:29:56that he set out

00:29:57for him

00:29:57in his life

00:29:58before he was

00:29:59going to start

00:29:59a new list

00:30:00it could not

00:30:01have been

00:30:02on his bucket list

00:30:03however

00:30:03to feel so punk

00:30:05by the end

00:30:05of that trip

00:30:06felt weird

00:30:07just awful

00:30:08as he told

00:30:09his doctor

00:30:10in an email

00:30:11when they got home

00:30:12I had the shakes

00:30:14terrible equilibrium

00:30:15and even my brain

00:30:17was foggy

00:30:18I'm better today

00:30:19by quite a bit

00:30:21I have every intention

00:30:22of living long enough

00:30:23so that you have

00:30:24to make a house call

00:30:25on Mars

00:30:27end quote

00:30:27I was worried

00:30:29that maybe they

00:30:29had gotten the flu

00:30:30while they were traveling

00:30:32and so I texted

00:30:34with my mom

00:30:35I was like

00:30:35hey I heard

00:30:36you guys are back

00:30:36you know

00:30:37how you doing

00:30:37I heard Larry's sick

00:30:38and she's like

00:30:40yeah you know

00:30:40he's doing

00:30:41a little bit better

00:30:43by Monday

00:30:44February 12th

00:30:45back home

01:14:29where I would make eye contact with her and she would be sad and remorseful it was very weird

01:14:36though it's very hard today we hope and we hope for justice for Larry the woman I loved admired

01:14:46and respected has shown me and everyone affected that she doesn't have an ounce of care for any of

01:14:54us Larry dedicated his life to Lori he loved her he trusted her and she killed him see if we

01:15:03can get

01:15:04through this there certainly was no ambivalence when Larry's son Dean faced her down it felt felt

01:15:13like my head was gonna pop I cannot begin to fathom the reasoning Lori had for doing what she did

01:15:17to

01:15:17my dad nor do I want to understand the workings of her mind I was glad that she was sitting

01:15:23like two

01:15:24feet away from me just to say it I know I speak like dad I know I articulate like him

01:15:31so it'd be

01:15:32like she was getting a it's like she was getting chewed out by dad the person she supposedly loved

01:15:38more than anything in the world that to have to have him standing up there and say saying those

01:15:45things about her there's also no amount of justice that can be done to make up for the years I

01:15:49will

01:15:49continue to suffer in the future without my best friend and my dad I was glad I got to do

01:15:54it and it

01:15:54took a huge weight off of off of my chest for things that I've been wanting to say for three

01:15:59years

01:15:59but remember Lori took an Alfred plea is there anything that you would like to say on your own

01:16:06behalf so what would she finally claim happened that cold winter's day on the lake oh she had a story

01:16:15to tell all right couldn't help but wonder what Larry might have thought about the punchline

01:16:24coming up Lori says it's finally time to tell the truth but was it the truth well that's when I'm

01:16:33like

01:16:33okay that's a lie

01:16:48so I'm very happy to finally be able to

01:16:53tell the families

01:17:00what happened

01:17:02when the moment finally arrived for Lori Eisenberg to deliver on her promise

01:17:08well let's just say it certainly didn't go as anyone in the gallery had hoped it would

01:17:12or expected

01:17:14I want to state emphatically that I am responsible for Larry's death

01:17:19absolutely

01:17:21I'm so sorry for everything I did

01:17:26starting with the embezzlement that resulted in the lies

01:17:29deceit and ultimate betrayal

01:17:31of the love and the trust of the people I love especially Larry

01:17:36so was a full confession coming

01:17:39nope not at all

01:17:41I know that Larry would still be alive

01:17:46if it was not for me

01:17:50fixing

01:17:52a drink with Benadryl in it

01:17:54so that I would be able

01:18:01to selfishly and cowardly take my life

01:18:06if I wouldn't have had that bottle in there

01:18:09he would not have accidentally drank it

01:18:13there you have it

01:18:14Lori fixed the drink to kill herself

01:18:18but Larry drank it before she could

01:18:22it was really just an accident

01:18:25well

01:18:26you know

01:18:27that's when I'm like okay

01:18:29that's a lie

01:18:31you know

01:18:32because

01:18:33again

01:18:34you're looking at

01:18:35all the google searches

01:18:37that she had been doing

01:18:38all the things that clearly

01:18:40shows

01:18:41what she was up to

01:18:45I've had to wear some high water pants

01:18:48around certain individuals

01:18:49because the bull crap floating around

01:18:50at that sentencing

01:18:52I wish I would have had chest waders

01:18:54and water wings and a snorkel

01:18:56so we didn't all drown in it

01:18:57after Larry's death

01:18:5950 minutes

01:19:00she went on and on

01:19:02and on

01:19:05all prepared in advance

01:19:07page after page

01:19:08as if to drown all murmurs of disbelief

01:19:12in a flood of words

01:19:13I don't know what more I can say

01:19:16I'm guilty

01:19:18I'm sorry

01:19:20the judge

01:19:21was quicker

01:19:22here will be the court sentence

01:19:23got right to the point

01:19:25I will impose a life sentence

01:19:2830 years fixed

01:19:30of the life in prison

01:19:3230 years without parole

01:19:34plus the 5 years she received

01:19:37after pleading guilty to fraud and theft

01:19:39for her financial crimes

01:19:40even with credit for time already served

01:19:43it's unlikely

01:19:44Lori Eisenberg

01:19:45will ever live to see another day out of prison

01:19:49and by the way

01:19:50she did not respond to our repeated interview requests

01:19:54yeah she gets to sit and think about it

01:19:58I think it's a fine

01:19:59fine use of my tax dollars

01:20:01to help pay for her to sit and think about it

01:20:05it's it's not it's not justice

01:20:06justice would be I get to get I get to have dad back

01:20:09but

01:20:13it's as close to a second as I can come up with

01:20:17as for Lori's daughters

01:20:19Amber and three of her sisters pleaded guilty to conspiracy

01:20:23to commit federal program theft

01:20:26received three years probation

01:20:27and were ordered to pay the money back

01:20:30in Amber's case about $16,000

01:20:33but the cost is much higher than that

01:20:36you have a record

01:20:37I have a felony for life

01:20:40how does that affect your life

01:20:43it's really hard to be labeled something that

01:20:47you

01:20:47it

01:20:49isn't a true reflection of who you are

01:20:52it's been

01:20:54really hard to get jobs

01:20:55nobody even wants to talk to you

01:20:58when you were a felon

01:21:00so why did Lori do it

01:21:02was theft

01:21:03simply a compulsion

01:21:05honestly only for rubes

01:21:08was it her straight arrow husband's stupid rules

01:21:11she felt compelled to break

01:21:12or could she simply not permit him to know who she really was

01:21:17in the end of course

01:21:19everyone knew

01:21:23Larry's money in a state his family estimated at

01:21:25two to three million dollars

01:21:27has gone to repay the non-profit

01:21:29plus the damages imposed by the court

01:21:32Cougar Gulch has been sold

01:21:35children are learning to live without their grandparents

01:21:38a shattered family is feeling its way

01:21:43you know they unfortunately it's become a little bit more divided

01:21:49I can't have relationships that aren't

01:21:53honest and

01:21:55truthful and

01:21:57there are some of our family members who want to stay in that place with

01:22:01our mom

01:22:02live in denial

01:22:03yeah

01:22:05to deny the things that

01:22:06they know happened

01:22:08and that we need to deal with

01:22:09I've

01:22:10extended love to them

01:22:12but they know where I stand

01:22:15and Larry

01:22:16his image

01:22:18lives on

01:22:19among his children

01:22:21his stepchildren

01:22:22his grandchildren

01:22:24I just remember him as the immortal Larry Eisenberg that he always was

01:22:27I don't have to have the memory of him getting sick and frail and

01:22:31slowly slipping away helpless in a hospital bed

01:22:34I get to have nothing but the good memories of him

01:22:37Larry Eisenberg

01:22:39that honest man

01:22:41whose fatal flaw was to love the woman

01:22:44who couldn't be
