00:301,133 km complete across the balance of the week for the riders and 157 riders arriving to do battle
00:40in pursuit of glory in what has become one of the most prestigious races in Europe and Asia on the
00:50UCI Pro Tour over recent years.
00:54UCI Pro Series 2.1 Series event and the first stage presenting is one likely to be for the sprinters.
01:04The parkour, the shape of the stage suggesting that it's going to be a challenge for the breakaway to stay
01:13away, challenge two for the climbers to get involved and the sprinters flexing their fast twitchers.
01:20That's as they would like at any rate. 27 nations in total represented in amongst the 23 teams.
01:27Three of those squads at World Tour level, 14 at Pro Team level and from the earliest stages, as you
01:35would expect, flag in and they're underway.
01:39The first of eight days begins with an immediate attack from some of the lower-ranked teams in the local
01:44Continental Division III registered squads.
01:47Want to showcase their ability and ensure that they show the jersey up front.
01:54My name is Declan Quigley. I'm joined by former Irish National Road Race champion Imogen Cotter to run the rule
01:59over the riders throughout the week.
02:00And Imogen, no surprise really that there's an early bid for that early breakaway from the local squads.
02:06Yeah, exactly. And in a race that was, you know, that's bound to end in a sprint, it's not unusual
02:13to see a break go.
02:14But this break looks like it's set up to be something special and quite competitive.
02:18You've got Michael Pomorski taking the KOM sprint early on and back to the peloton.
02:25They built up a gap of about four minutes and ten seconds.
02:28Michael Pomorski taking the Treasures of Turkey intermediate sprint along the way, having, as Imogen has mentioned, taken those King
02:38of the Mountains points early on in the stage.
02:40So clearly the young Polish rider, 22 years young and absolutely flying.
02:45He's proving to be a powerhouse in this five-rider breakaway that has detached itself from the peloton.
02:51A maximum lead of four minutes and ten seconds and that's slowly being, surely being whittled away by the main
02:59peloton.
03:02The group assembling out front including Özpan Kalbim from the Sportoto cycling team.
03:09One of three Turkish riders in the breakaway including Doğan, Halil Abriam Doğan from the Mulya Büyük Sehir squad.
03:18Konya Büyük Sehir as well.
03:20Another team represented by Akhmat Khan, Akpinar.
03:24And the other two riders in the breakaway.
03:26Mual Girmay, the Eritrein with the Istanbul team.
03:28And the aforementioned ATT Investments rider, Michal Pomorski.
03:34Byron Muntin will be trying to keep his powder dry as best he possibly can.
03:38He'll be looking forward to the climbs to come on stages three and six.
03:42Two GC appointments for the riders through the week for the riders in amongst that team.
03:49Well, up the front of the peloton, noticeable, Imogen, that it's the Alpesin Premier Tech squad doing an awful lot
03:53of the pacemaking on the front.
03:54Yeah, yeah, Alpesin Premier Tech obviously with their sprint hopeful, Simon De Geer.
04:00But they are joined as well by some of their Picnic Post NL riders.
04:04So both teams keen to bring that break back.
04:08And you can see that they brought it down already by about a minute and a half.
04:11So they're working hard together.
04:14Yeah, paring back that advantage.
04:16Picnic Post NL joining in.
04:19They've got Kasper van Uden, fine sprinter, the rider who's been to this race 12 months previously.
04:24And he'll look to see what he can possibly produce.
04:27The 24-year-old Dutchman looking to try and secure the Team Picnic Post NL's first victory of the season.
04:34It's been a very long and agonising and extended drought for this World Tour Register team.
04:40Yeah, I think it's interesting.
04:42They're kind of building up their development teams again or their development pathways.
04:47And Kasper van Uden is a great example of that.
04:50I mean, he's only 23 and already won a World Tour stage at the Giro last year.
04:55So definitely want to watch for today's sprint finish.
04:58Yeah, the absent Premier Tech squad, by contrast, have had plenty of victories so far this season.
05:03They're flying high.
05:04And they're also contributing to the pacemaking in pursuit of this five-rider group.
05:08At the back is Gourmet.
05:11It's a familiar surname, isn't it?
05:13Moual Gourmet is a younger brother of...
05:1521-year-old indeed, younger brother of the World Tour star that is Biniyam Gourmet.
05:23Gourmet, not Gourmet, Istanbul team represented in the break today.
05:27Two Eritreans in their line-up.
05:33And down in amongst the sultry surroundings as the riders sort of whine and twist their way along the Aegean
05:40coast
05:41and head towards a conclusion today in the historic surroundings of Selçuk.
05:47A wonderful, remarkable part of the world, isn't it?
05:50And it's just dripping with history and culture and heritage and just so many different layers of history
05:57have been laid out in and around this particular region of Turkey
06:04and indeed Selçuk in a very specific sense.
06:07Yeah, and those beautiful historic landmarks will serve as a backdrop for the Treasures of Turkey,
06:14a white jersey to be contested this week,
06:16which is going to be awarded at iconic sites and landmarks throughout Turkey along our route,
06:22which mainly goes along the coast
06:23and then heads into Ankara for the final stage, stage 7, or stage 8, sorry.
06:28Yeah, first visit back to the nation's capital in 26 years.
06:33That'll be stage 8.
06:34That'll be the concluding stanza of this eight-stage event coming next Sunday.
06:40Before that, they've got plenty of different topography.
06:44No time trial in this one, so it tends to leave the issue in doubt for an extended period of
06:49time.
06:49We do, though, have two summit finishes coming up, as I mentioned, on stages 3 and 6.
06:55The third stage, a race to Kiran from Marmaris.
06:58That'll be a short stage of just 132.5 kilometres.
07:01But that final ramp up after an earlier climbing expedition is going to be challenging and instructive
07:09and give us a good idea of who's going to challenge for overall honours.
07:11And that'll be rubber-stamped, really, by the ride from Antalya to Fezlikan at the end of stage 6.
07:18Again, even shorter stage for standard, 28 kilometres.
07:21Mountain stage is short, always makes things interesting.
07:23Crowds out in force, always a great welcome in Turkey.
07:26This event, running since the mid-1960s, began as the Marmaris Tour in 1963.
07:32And then in 1965, it sort of became an international event, no longer just for local riders.
07:40And the international element of it has continued through to today and took on this presidential status a couple of
07:47years after that.
07:48But since the mid-1960s, it's been solidified as an important vehicle for emerging Turkish racing cyclists
07:55and also a wonderful opportunity for the local authorities to showcase the beauty of the region.
08:02Yeah, and it was a World Tour race from 2017 to 2019, and now it's a pro race, but still
08:08attracting some World Tour teams.
08:10So we have Alps in Premier Tech, Picnic, Post NL, and XDS Astana as our World Tour teams in this
08:16race.
08:17And you can see Team Flanders-Baloise pulling on the front here again.
08:21Advantage down to just over a minute with 34 kilometres remaining.
08:25And Team Flanders-Baloise, as you mentioned, have decided to throw their hat into the ring.
08:30Now, they're involved in the chase as well.
08:32Three different teams represented on the front.
08:34The five riders from the breakaway group, as they see their advantage, start to dwindle.
08:39Still five involved.
08:42And starting to miss a turn or two on the front is Oz Kalbim from the Sportoto cycling team.
08:49But the man on the front, Pomorski, he's hardly missed a trick all day.
08:54He's looked very strong.
08:55Yeah, he's taking a lot of pulls and really setting the pace for this team.
08:59And I think it's a reason why the break has been a bit slowing coming down, actually.
09:04That gap has stayed, you know, up at around a minute for quite a while.
09:08So I think he's pulling a lot on the front.
09:11And you can see here that a rider from the Sportoto getting a bit of extra motivation from the team
09:16car just to keep that break going.
09:34Yeah, Oz Kalbim getting just a little bit of extra G up from the team car, a little bit of
09:40extra motivation.
09:40I think he needs it.
09:41Like I said, he's missed a turn or two of late and just being appraised of the specifics of the
09:48upcoming topography and just try and hang in there.
09:51We've got a couple of climbs coming up.
09:53You can get over those.
09:54You'll be OK through to the end of the day.
09:56I'm always assuming that the breakaway survives.
09:58That looks increasingly less likely, it has to be said.
10:0232, well, almost 33 kilometres and it's just an advantage of a minute.
10:07Surely not enough.
10:07The World Tour squads, Albusim Premier Tech and Team Picnic Post NL in the company of Pro Team Level, Pro
10:14Series Level Team Flanders Balwaz.
10:19Managing this one carefully.
10:21The Team Flanders Balwaz squad, of course, of Tom Crabbe in fine sprinting form so far this year.
10:27A couple of victories already to his name.
10:29Jules Hesters is a rider who's been in the top three in the Tour of Turkey in recent seasons in
10:37stages.
10:37So he knows the race well.
10:39Knows the particular rhythms of the racing in this particular country.
10:44And, well, Jules Hester is another rider there to support for the Team Flanders Balwaz squad.
10:49For Albusim Premier Tech, Simon de Harris, fresh, you might say, or at least with a fresh memory of his
10:57stage victory into Antalya 12 months ago in the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey.
11:03He'll be up to try and repeat former glories.
11:07The Team Picnic Post NL squad, as we mentioned, Kasper Van Uden is their go-to man today.
11:11Plenty of other teams, though, with plenty of skin in the game and belief that they can produce something.
11:17Yeah, of course.
11:18We have Fernando Gaviria, who's in great form at the moment for Kaya Rural, Segura's RGA.
11:25He might not have the same lead-out train that he had at previous teams, but he is surrounded by
11:31some good riders on his team.
11:32They've got great GC riders, and I think he's got some good guys around him who could lead him up
11:39nicely into today's finish here in Selçuk.
11:42We've also got, yeah, like we've said, Tom Crabber is a big one to watch today.
11:48I would be looking also at Leonardi.
11:52Yeah, we've Stanislav Anilkowski is also in good form for Kofidis.
11:59So, yeah, it could go to any one of the teams, really, but I think that the main one to
12:06watch today, for me, would be either Simon de Geer or Tom Crabber.
12:10It's a very strong sprint line-up, it has to be said.
12:13There's some clear strength, and this is one of the strongest riders in the sprint line-up.
12:18Simon de Geer, we've been talking about him.
12:20His team have been on the front, but he's clearly in a bit of bother.
12:23Oh, yeah, he's got a rear-wheel puncture.
12:26Heading back for a little bit of help.
12:2721.6 kilometres remaining.
12:30It's not exactly ideal, but should be time enough to recover from this one?
12:34Yeah, I'm definitely sure on that.
12:36I mean, he's got a great team around him who can help bring him back to the bunch, should he
12:41have a big gap when he's got his wheel change or a bike change.
12:45So, I wouldn't be too worried.
12:46He's got the likes of Jonas Rickardt with him, so not to worry just yet.
12:50Yeah, he's got big engines there to try and power him back to the front of the bunch.
12:54Always assuming he can get quick service as the Kofidis squad go to the front.
12:59Lumpy profile, this 21.5 kilometres remaining, and still a little bit of up and down for the riders in
13:06the main peloton,
13:06and indeed those up front to try and deal with.
13:09Go for a rear-wheel change.
13:11Obviously Premier Tech, no panic and no recourse to the spare bike.
13:15They believe there's plenty of time to get him back into the main peloton on his own bike.
13:20His number one bike, if you will.
13:23His number 11 bike, more specifically.
13:25And Simona Harris back, winding his way through the cavalcade.
13:30So, still got cars in amongst him that I think will give him confidence that he'll be able to make
13:35his way back in time.
13:37As the gap comes down, well inside a minute now.
13:41Catch seems inevitable.
13:43Yep, just 300 metres, and you've got, it could be Sergio Sametier pulling on the front there for Kofidis.
13:50And helping to bring that gap down really quickly, and he's got the whole Team Picnic post-NL team lined
13:55out behind him.
13:57But these roads are starting to get quite draggy, a bit rolly, so it's really difficult for the breakaway to
14:03keep working together
14:04when it's difficult to get into a rhythm.
14:07So, I think that we'll start to see it drop down very quickly now.
14:12Yeah, powerful contribution, that's to be sure.
14:15Kofidis' squad want to make it as challenging and as difficult as it possibly could be.
14:20They've got Stanislaw Anilkowski, who's a fine Polish sprinter for them.
14:25Inwal Buchmann as well, 33-year-old German rider for the overall.
14:29And peppered through their line-up is a list of riders who are strong and capable,
14:36particularly in this kind of terrain against this kind of opposition.
14:40Weather conditions absolutely perfect today.
14:4220 degrees Celsius, the maximum reach for the riders.
14:46And a little bit of wind out there coming off the Aegean Sea,
14:51but nothing too demanding and likely to split things up significantly.
14:56Down to four up front.
14:59And Michal Pomorski into the final 10 kilometres.
15:02Last man standing.
15:04It just starts to disintegrate the break as they come through the series of bends.
15:09And that little bit of wind perhaps,
15:11meaning that Pomorski is just able to showcase his ability.
15:14He won the King of the Mountains climb.
15:19He then took the Treasures of Turkey sprint.
15:21He then took the Intermediate sprint.
15:22And then managed to be last man standing.
15:25finally absorbed inside the final 10 kilometres
15:28as the teams start to assemble and get set now for the big bunch gallop.
15:35Yeah, you can see teams starting to communicate
15:37and they've all found their riders.
15:39And here we see Tom Crabbe of Team Flanders-Belois.
15:42And he's right beside, just where he needs to be,
15:44in the middle of the bunch, conserving energy
15:46and with all of his teammates around him.
15:50So at 5km out, that's where you want to be.
15:53So the yellow, blue and white colours of the Flanders-Belois squad
15:56have number 71, and that is Tom Crabbe, their Belgian prodigy.
16:00Just 20 years of age.
16:01Victory is already this season in the Duel de Bessege
16:03and in Vuelta Andalusia.
16:05It's a very, very compact peloton at the moment.
16:08Picking Post-NL in those navy blue colours with the orange stripes.
16:12We're going to try and get organised for their man, Kasper van Ouden,
16:16as we pick out Stanislaw.
16:17Anilkowski, the co-fitter squad, invests to see if he can possibly produce for them.
16:23Palti Visit Malta, those white jerseys with the green sleeves and the red shorts.
16:29They have the significant figure of Giovanni Lenardi,
16:33the winner of the points classification in this event 12 months ago.
16:36He's got five top tens in 2016.
16:38What has Giovanni Lenardi got to offer in today's finishing kick for?
16:42With 5km remaining, it would be a remarkable thing
16:45if it didn't turn into a final bunch gallop.
16:48Plenty of teams want it.
16:52Van Ouden we pick out.
16:53He's got a couple of teammates right behind him.
16:55He's got plenty of teammates in front of him.
16:57But as they jostle for position,
16:59the Picking Post-NL squad find themselves just a little bit further back.
17:04They're sort of in the second or third row.
17:06Up front, it's owned by the Team Palti Visit Malta squad
17:09on the right-hand side of your picture.
17:11Over on the opposite side, the ATT Investments team.
17:14In the break all day.
17:15They're trying to see what they can do with perhaps Banaszczak
17:18or maybe Bonaszczewski.
17:204-1-1, K to go.
17:25Picking Post-NL find a way through on the left-hand side.
17:29On the right-hand side, for the first time,
17:31we see the Solution Tech Nippo Rally squad.
17:33They've got Tilio Viviani perhaps looking for
17:37what would be a breakthrough win for him in 2026.
17:43They roll through to the front.
17:44trying to maintain position.
17:47Inside four to go.
17:48The pace now pretty much as close to as intense as it's going to be all day.
17:53Now the Flanders-Balois team right-hand side of your picture
17:56trying to propel their man, Tom Crabbe, into perfect and prime position.
18:01Yeah, and we've got some riders who are a bit distanced from their team.
18:05We've got the Modern Adventure Pro Cycling.
18:07They're not quite working as cohesively as a team in the lead-in to this sprint finish.
18:13But Team Flanders-Balois doing some great work, keeping the pace high as they're coming into the final 3K.
18:20Yeah, that right-hander was one of the final significant sort of appointments
18:27or important points to be at the front.
18:30They've got a hairpin coming with two kilometers remaining.
18:33Everybody's going to want to own it.
18:35Modern Adventure Pro Cycling.
18:36Drag Race right up the middle to see if they can take command in those burgundy jerseys.
18:43The white jerseys, green sleeves, red shorts of Team Palti visit Malta.
18:47We're starting to see equipo Cairn Farmer trying to get into position in those green jerseys
18:53towards the right-hand side of the picture.
18:55They kind of get swallowed up a little bit.
18:56But Brustenga, Mark Brustenga is a rider for them.
19:00Now the MBH squad start to arrive.
19:03Davide Persico, one of a raft of really strong Italian riders to watch out for
19:08as his MBH squad own it on the front of the peloton.
19:13Here come the Tartaletto Iserex, purple and yellow colors.
19:16Timothy Dupont, oldest man in the bike race.
19:17Could it be for him?
19:19Yeah, and as they're coming into a really important turn in the race,
19:24I think it's going to be, positioning is going to be a real fight here.
19:28And you can see that the pace is really starting to pick up.
19:30Maybe some riders are getting a bit lost and they're not as,
19:33teams aren't working as cohesively as they were just, you know,
19:36maybe a couple of kilometers ago.
19:38So a real fight for position here and fight to keep an eye on your teammate
19:42and keep together as a team.
19:44Well, it's going to be a dive bomb into this hairpin with two kilometers remaining.
19:49Ballerini for the Astana squad just plunges down.
19:53I wonder how Lev Gonov is feeling.
19:55He's won a stage in this race 12 months ago.
19:57Could be a man to try and propel into position.
20:00Ballerini himself, not a bad sprinter,
20:03so pretty good set of legs and a great engine to have.
20:06Are they all going to make it through that challenging hairpin?
20:08It looked good as they make it through.
20:10So it's a clean, clean ride out of the hairpin and towards the final kilometer.
20:19Yeah, we've got some teams starting to split.
20:22The peloton starting to split on each side of the road.
20:25Team Picnic, Post NL, in really nice formation there.
20:30Everybody close on each other's wheels.
20:32Everybody wants to be there, but not quite on the front, close to the front.
20:35Colnaghi for the Bardiani squad.
20:37They're trying to move him into position.
20:39Kern Farmer on the right-hand side in those green colors for Brustenga.
20:42Can Brustenga possibly deliver?
20:45The Modern Adventure Pro cycling in the left,
20:47but it's the Picnic, Post NL on the front at the moment for Kasper van Uden.
20:52As they head towards the kite in the final thousand meters,
20:55looking good at the moment for Picnic, Post NL.
20:57Have they got enough riders?
20:58Here come the Alpacine squad in those blue jerseys,
21:01white helmets on the right-hand side.
21:03Just starting to ease towards the front.
21:05Simon de Herres made his way back after his puncture.
21:07Safely there and available to go for glory today.
21:11It's the Alpacine Premier Tech squad against Picnic, Post NL.
21:15They own it on the front.
21:16Two World Tour squads.
21:18Can the other teams move into position?
21:21And others trying to move up.
21:22Modern Adventure Pro cycling have a couple of riders to lead out
21:25and to present their man into position.
21:29Also jockeying for position and trying to find a way,
21:32and thread away through at the moment is Team Flanders Balwaz.
21:35As they move towards the final 500 meters and it's the Alpacine Premier Tech squad.
21:42De Herres sitting second in line.
21:43He's absolutely ready to fire.
21:45Simon de Herres ready to go as we move into the final 200 meters.
21:50Now he launches his sprint.
21:51There's the Belgian from the front.
21:54From the Alpacine Premier Tech.
21:56Gaviri is there as well.
21:57And they're all trying to move into position.
21:59But coming with a late run on the middle of the road is Tom Crabbe.
22:02Tom Crabbe up the middle for the Team Flanders Balwaz squad.
22:05Gets the glory.
22:06Gets the victory on stage one.
22:08And it's Tom Crabbe that pitches that one at the 10th from Simon de Herres.
22:12Beautifully executed and wonderfully timed sprint from the Belgian Tom Crabbe.
22:19As Team Flanders Balwaz come up with victory and glory on day one
22:23of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey.
22:25Let's get a look at it again.
22:28Yeah, and now you see here, you see Simon de Herres perfectly launch his sprint
22:33on the right-hand side of the road.
22:36And it just seems like at the last moment, Simon de Herres had a little bit of an issue.
22:41And that's where Tom Crabbe just comes powering through.
22:44And he takes it by half a bike length maybe on the line.
22:47But he really seems to have come from nowhere.
22:50He was tucked right in.
22:51And here you can see that Simon de Herres, almost on the first line
22:57as they're coming towards the finish, that he unclips his pedal.
23:01And it just completely kills the sprint and that of the riders behind him.
23:08And that's when Tom Crabbe comes through and just grabs that on the finish line.
23:12And it's a really amazing win for Tom Crabbe.
23:17A former European Under-23 Elimination Race track champ.
23:22So track cyclist turned now a pro race stage winner.
23:28Strong roadie, absolutely stunning.
23:29Third success of the year for the 20-year-old Tom Crabbe.
23:33He is flying high.
23:35I don't know how he felt about that one.
23:36Thrilled, no doubt.
23:39You were super motivated.
23:41Now you just watched the replay of your win.
23:44What goes through your mind?
23:46I think I'm going to have to watch it back quite a few times
23:50because, yeah, I just came from so far.
23:53We were really good with the team.
23:54But, you know, with the U-turn at 2Ks to go, it was quite hectic.
23:59But, yeah, I mean, the team did a super good job.
24:01Even though we lost each other a bit in the final,
24:03everybody was as motivated as I was.
24:06And we really made a plan.
24:08And, yeah, we stick to it.
24:10And in the end, it was hectic.
24:12But it worked out.
24:13I'm just super happy.
24:14You're a very young rider.
24:16What are your specific skills for winning this stage?
24:19Just, I think, instinct.
24:22You know, just trying to find the gap.
24:25And, you know, being quite explosive,
24:27which can help out quite a few times.
24:30That I, maybe I'm too far back, like today.
24:32I can just really push hard from quite far.
24:35And today it was really necessary because it came, I think, I was in first place only at 20 meters
24:41to go.
24:41So I really needed to be, I needed to be a long sprint today.
24:44You started the season really well with stage win at Etoile de Bessege, Ruta del Sol.
24:49Did you expect to win?
24:50What does it mean for you to win now after the one-day races in Belgium?
24:54Yeah, it means a lot.
24:55The one-day races weren't quite as I planned.
24:57And it was just, yeah, it was really hard to keep my head up sometimes because I just expected so
25:02much more.
25:03But maybe that was a thing that I bothered too much about, that the expectations were too high.
25:08And I came here with no expectations, just, you know, trying to have fun and try to do my job
25:13as best as I can.
25:14And, yeah, if the head's there, then the legs are there too.
25:17And that was necessary, I think.
25:19Winning stage one of the Tour of Turkey is something Jasper Philipsen, for example, has done recently.
25:25Do you see your future at that level?
25:28I hope so.
25:29I mean, it's quite a big name.
25:30I think now I'm just trying to develop myself as best as I can.
25:34And we'll see where we get.
25:36Professionally.
25:37Thank you.
25:38Merci.
25:39He's developing well, isn't he, as Simon, sorry, Tom Crabber takes a glorious success for Team Flanders.
25:45Ball was ahead of Simon de Haas.
25:47Davide Persico, Ramazan Yilmaz getting up for a fine fourth place.
25:51The best place of the local riders, Jason Tesson next up for France and for Total Energy.
25:57Gaviria, Henneken, Cetilin Lenardi and Timothy Dupont rounding out the top ten.
26:04And, well, it's a trip to the podium for Tom Crabber as he takes the overall race lead into stage
26:11two.
26:11Also leads on points.
26:13And it is the man from the early break, Mijal Pomorski, that leads the treasures of Turkey
26:19and, indeed, the King of the Mountains competition into day two.
26:27The King of the Mountains
26:29The King of the Mountains
26:44The King of the Mountains
