00:00A Kenyan appeals court has overturned a landmark ruling that access to abortion is a fundamental right.
00:07In Kenya, where abortion is legal but widely taboo, the decision could push more women and girls towards unsafe backstreet
00:14procedures.
00:15Still, some say the court made the right call.
00:17I don't think abortion should be legalized and it should not be a fundamental right.
00:24The right of the unborn must be upheld and this second ruling, which said it is not a fundamental right,
00:32is the best thing.
00:33That's what I think.
00:34I agree with the court of appeal ruling because once there is that relationship between a man and a woman
00:45and there is a conception,
00:49that fetus should be allowed to develop into a baby and be born onto this earth because biblically it is
00:57wrong to kill because abortion is killing.
01:00So the high court must by allowing abortion to be carried out.
01:06The ruling has divided society here, with some arguing it's a decision that should be left to the individual and
01:12not authorities.
01:13Personally, I have mixed emotions about it.
01:19And I think the option for abortion should be someone's personal decision, like people carry out abortions for very many
01:37other reasons.
01:39And I think an individual should be able to decide whether they want to do it or not.
01:46Kenya's health ministry estimates that over 790,000 abortions took place in 2023.
