00:00The Gold Award goes to Cleveland Roberts from Columbus Technical College.
00:06Ten units by June 1st. It seems like an impossible endeavor.
00:12The Career Fair brings all of our employer partners.
00:15Most of these employers will have job opportunities available.
00:29Wow!
00:31That's pretty awesome.
00:37Probably no surprise to any of you, there's a huge housing storage in the United States.
00:42Just not enough skilled labor to be able to build homes.
00:46Something that has been missing, in my opinion, for many years in the industry, is innovation.
00:52This is the reason Frame Tech is here, is to help fix the housing crisis.
00:58You know, you see robots building cars, that's okay, cool.
01:02Never thought I'd seen a million years, robots building a house.
01:06Never thought I'd see that.
01:26I know my purpose is to make sure people get to where they need to get to.
01:31I need y'all on point. We're having conversations with employers.
01:35Alright, thanks y'all. Let's have some fun today.
01:37I will either push you or pull you. And you need those folks in your life.
01:42We do need more younger people coming into the trades.
01:47The older generation still needs somebody to pass this down to.
01:50That's the biggest problem. You know, have them retire and we don't learn anything from them.
01:55My purpose is making beautiful homes, making beautiful things.
01:59Even tearing down a wall. It's like, it's awesome.
02:09So welcome everybody. Appreciate you coming down to Frame Tech and checking out our factory.
02:14I've been in the construction industry all my life.
02:16As an industry, in terms of the construction industry, the housing industry,
02:20we've all done a pretty terrible job, in my opinion, of fixing the housing crisis.
02:26Probably 90% of homes in the United States are stick-built on-site.
02:31Not a lot of technological advances. The nail gun was invented in 1954, right?
02:37They can't build at the rate that they need to build.
02:40What we do, we build those wall panels, we build those trusses in the plant,
02:45we ship them out in the field, and we frame.
02:48So we're totally vertically integrated.
02:51We're showing them that we can do things two times faster.
02:53We're showing them our quality is 10x.
02:58We believe this is the most technologically advanced component building plant in the United States.
03:05This plant right now builds about 12 homes a week.
03:08Wow.
03:09We can't keep doing it the same way that we've always done it.
03:12That's why we're in the state of affairs we are now with the skilled trades.
03:16We've got to think outside the box and make it better.
03:21This may be where Habitat for Humanity can get 40 houses built sooner than later.
03:27Every problem is an opportunity, in my opinion.
03:29And that's why we're doing what we're doing here.
03:32Because the problem is the housing industry and the demand.
03:36The fix is technology, the fix is training.
03:40It's always hard to find employees.
03:42I don't think there's any way around that other than to build a culture and build a system that it's
03:48exciting for people to work.
03:49You have the experienced dinosaur that's back and motivated and happy,
03:54and then you have the 18 or 20 year old that is excited about the robots.
04:01My personal goal is to make people start thinking that it really is cool to build something.
04:08I can see a lot of opportunity for our students here from the manufacturing to the framing to even computer
04:13programming.
04:14All of the above.
04:15Yeah.
04:16We want future manufacturers and future framers right here, right now on our doorstep.
04:21So we have a student, she wants to be a framer this summer.
04:25And she's a go-getter and friendly and doesn't even hesitate to jump in and take charge when need be.
04:30What's her name?
04:30Grace.
04:31Grace.
04:36I never dreamed about being in construction.
04:40When I started, when I was little, I hated it.
04:47My dad is a general contractor that does remodeling and he 100% got me into the trades.
04:54That's a nice toilet.
04:56It's funny the things you say in construction, that's a nice toilet.
04:59I would always work for my dad since I was little.
05:03It really empowers me and it really makes me feel good at the end of the day and that's really
05:07just why I kept into it, you know?
05:08And you need to get this whole fireplace torn out.
05:10They're still trying to figure out what they want to do with this area.
05:13My dad is just the sweetest man ever.
05:15He is like the hardest worker I've ever met.
05:17He does it all.
05:18He does everything.
05:19He teaches me everything I know.
05:20That's some solid stuff right there.
05:22It'll come apart in little pieces.
05:24You're just going to have to work your way across.
05:26You don't think I can pry bar it?
05:28No.
05:33I'm studying construction management.
05:36All my teachers are just very supportive and they really care about us.
05:43When I met Vance, I've never met someone that believes so much in me, no matter what my gender was,
05:49other than my dad.
05:52What nails am I using?
05:53These are eight pennies, so you need 16 pennies.
05:55You need, like, the three and a quarters.
05:57Okay.
05:57Right?
05:58That's what I thought.
05:59I never really saw my gender being a problem until, like, I got more into meeting companies, meeting supervisors.
06:06Yeah, it was hard, but he just, believe me, no matter what.
06:13Grace, she's a real go-getter, and she's worked construction jobs before.
06:18She would like to get a summer job in Flagstaff working in construction, and there was a connection that she
06:24made.
06:25And, unfortunately, she got discriminated against about pay.
06:30Like, oh, you're pretty good for a woman or whatever.
06:32Yeah, that's how the email felt.
06:34I mean, at least I'll get a job after this, but, like, I know how much, like, I know how
06:38much I know, you know?
06:39Like, I know how much, like, I should at least be paid within a reason.
06:42And he's like, wait, I'm going to raise you, like, a dollar.
06:44And I was like, that's still less than what you're paying a new guy that knows nothing.
06:47Like, that's just, like, that just messes up.
06:49It's sadly a prevalent attitude, and, unfortunately, it's incremental change is the only way it's going to get there.
06:57I've got to get to the top, and then I'll change it from there.
06:59Exactly.
07:00That's the thing.
07:01He reminds me of my dad, so it's great.
07:03He's just a sweetheart, and he cares so much about his students.
07:06He believes in us, so we believe in ourselves now.
07:08So, yeah, it's great.
07:10Grace, I'm excited.
07:16We're going now?
07:17Yeah, put your name on it, man.
07:18Right on the walls.
07:21What's your name?
07:29He says when we drive by, you want to look at that house and be like, I built that back
07:33in the day, you know?
07:34It's kind of cool.
07:35I've never done that before, because I do a lot of remodeling, but I've never built, like, framed something like
07:38this.
07:39So, that was really cool.
07:40Yeah.
07:47The main reason that I'm in construction is I was lucky enough to have someone that knew I could do
07:52it.
07:54I can't wait to find the right company one day that had the same mindset as me, you know?
07:57You're building a place that people are going to live in forever, you know?
08:03You're building someone's dream.
08:08All right.
08:09These habitat starter homes, I was able to build one a year with the students, but when the new project
08:15came up with 40 houses, we are not going to be able to do that with our small group of
08:20students.
08:21We'll take on two, but in order to get these houses up as fast as possible for our community needs,
08:27we've reached out to other organizations, like Frametech.
08:30Robots built the panels, kind of like we've done in the shop, modular.
08:35So, it helps Habitat do the houses that need to get done.
08:40Need some help?
08:41We know that Flagstaff has declared a housing emergency.
08:45We knew that trade workforce was a desperate need, not only in Flagstaff, but across America.
08:54When you have a smaller workforce, you must pay higher wages.
08:58That means now the cost of home has gone up.
09:02The starter homes are taking a very big step to building permanent affordable housing.
09:08They're part of that solution.
09:11This is a perfect symbiotic relationship.
09:14Habitat, Coconino Community College.
09:18We're building workforce and we're building workforce housing all at the same time.
09:24Every day right now is a brand new day on this lot.
09:28Because so much is happening in such a short amount of time.
09:32I'm just elated.
09:33I'm also scared.
09:34We got the Blitz build in just a couple weeks.
09:37Just hoping that we hit all the marks.
09:39We're going to have over a hundred volunteers from all over the country, descending on Flagstaff.
09:45We'll build ten homes in ten days.
09:48We'll have drywall on three units when they show up.
09:51And then the other seven units, we're actually going to utilize the Blitz build to finish those out as well.
09:58Frame Tech just located an hour south of us.
10:02They're able to move quite a bit faster than those community college students because they're learning as they're building.
10:07These guys are well trained.
10:08And so it's really great to have them and be able to put up houses quickly.
10:13That's what Habitat does.
10:15We build for our community, with our community.
10:29Hello.
10:30Hello.
10:31Yes.
10:33Yeah, I was trying to call you because we got a tire that is flying.
10:37Alright, well I'm coming.
10:39Okay, bye.
10:39Alright.
10:44We have a loaded trailer with a flat tire that I just got called in to change.
10:52Yeah, so since I'm in, you know, the management position, I have to cover all bases.
11:00I am a decent mechanic by day.
11:02My great grandfather, Neil Mayo, you know, he was a blacksmith back in the late 1800s.
11:08So that was a big deal back then.
11:09And my grandfather, you know, he started the self-detaining service back in 1960, 1962 when Martin Luther King and
11:17all them marched down there.
11:19And after that, you know, a lot of black businesses started to open up and my grandfather and uncles, you
11:26know, they were part of that.
11:27So I, you know, I guess that kind of all trickled down through the generations.
11:32My uncle had a plumbing company and he was one who really inspired me to just learn one skill because
11:40like before, you know, I was just doing a lot of handyman work.
11:43He looked at me and said, yeah.
11:44I said, I know you got a lot of work because everybody looking for the handyman.
11:48He said, but you need to, you know, specialize in one thing.
11:53That's kind of why I went ahead and gotten into cabinet making.
11:57Basically, I'm working towards freedom, you know, I want to be free from punching the clock.
12:19I imagine my competitors probably start practicing the week after they left the state competition.
12:26I'm pretty sure that, you know, they're going to be well prepared.
12:29So I need to be also.
12:32You know, I never expected to be able to go and compete in the state competition and win, you know.
12:38But, you know, it's been amazing.
12:39And the gold award goes to Cleveland Roberts from Columbus Technical.
12:44I was real anxious, you know, leading all the way up to the state competition.
12:49Then when we got there, it's like, you know, you do this stuff every day, calm down.
12:53You know what I'm saying? Take your time. You got it.
12:56That's how, you know, I'm looking forward to going into the national competition.
13:00Well, Nate, what you working on?
13:03I was trying to make a dual purpose type of seating.
13:08So how about you, champ?
13:11I ain't a champ yet.
13:13Well, you got to move on to the next round.
13:16Yeah, I know that's right.
13:17I'm very proud of you. I know the school is too.
13:19Yeah.
13:20Yeah, cool, cool, cool, cool.
13:21Well, best of luck to you.
13:23Yeah.
13:24Yeah.
13:26Once I get to a point where I feel like I can celebrate myself, I will.
13:30But, you know, right now, I don't think I'm there.
13:32You know, I think that also keeps me with an edge.
13:35You know, keep that fire in me, keep me going so I don't get content or complacent.
13:39Get it flushed.
13:41Oh, so it gets it flushed, too?
13:43Yeah.
13:46No matter how high I go or how much I think I got, you know, I always got to keep
13:50myself
13:51humble and grounded because it always something bigger.
14:05Hey, sweetheart.
14:06Hey, momma.
14:06Don't let the flowers in.
14:07Come on in.
14:08Okay.
14:09Ooh, how you doing?
14:10Ooh, always a pleasure seeing you, son.
14:12It is?
14:13Mm-hmm.
14:13You all right?
14:14Yes, sir.
14:15Come on in.
14:15Okay.
14:16You gonna be able to do that today, Cone?
14:18Yeah, sir.
14:18You all right?
14:19Mm-hmm.
14:19Okay.
14:20I gotcha.
14:21Good.
14:26I don't think you're going to fall.
14:29I hope not, Cleveland.
14:30Scratch up my table.
14:31You got to buy me another.
14:33No, no ma'am.
14:35I'm a war worker now.
14:36You know, I refinish stuff like that, too, so.
14:38Really?
14:41You know, the skills competition is going to be in Atlanta.
14:46Back in Atlanta again.
14:47Okay.
14:47At the same place.
14:48Okay.
14:49You ready for it?
14:50As ready as I'm going to get.
14:52But, I ain't going to say ready as I'm going to get.
14:53But, you know, I am still.
14:54Your mind set there?
14:56Yeah, my mind set there.
14:57So, I'm still, you know, practicing it.
14:59All right.
15:00I'm proud of you.
15:00You just know that, okay?
15:01I know.
15:02I appreciate you, mama.
15:05I know.
15:06I'm very proud of you.
15:10I definitely want to go into business for myself.
15:12Helping somebody or, you know, leading the team,
15:15bringing in new people, teaching them a new skill.
15:17You know, that's going to help them in life,
15:19help them survive, help them, you know, feed and raise their family.
15:23Oh, beautiful.
15:24I like that, y'all.
15:28It got to be something more than just making money.
15:34I'm very interested in teaching.
15:36Knowledge is one of the greatest things that I got to give.
15:40The biggest barrier to accomplishing that goal is me.
15:45I need to get in the place where I need to be
15:47before I can start focusing my energy on, you know,
15:50helping someone else get to the place they need to be.
15:55Practice as much as I can.
15:57Learn as much as I can.
15:59You know, just prepare myself as much as I can before I get there.
16:15Employers will come in, have 15 minutes to set up,
16:18and then it's show time.
16:19What I want to see out of the pre-apprentices,
16:22I want to see excitement.
16:23It's time to put all the soft skills that you've learned,
16:26it's time to show off.
16:30It's game day that, you know, let's go.
16:33Let's go.
16:38I don't wear makeup too often, but today's a special day.
16:44We're getting ready for the job expo.
16:47There's going to be different companies there,
16:50so hopefully we'll come out with a job.
16:54I did nursing for 30 years.
16:57I was a certified nurse assistant.
16:59I would go to someone's house and take care of them.
17:02And I did have a family that I took care of for 20 years,
17:05and both passed away.
17:08I love nursing, but I thought,
17:12this is kind of hurtful hard.
17:15And so, I thought, what am I going to do?
17:20I didn't actually think about construction
17:22until I found the pre-apprenticeship.
17:25She built the city.
17:26I thought, this is hope.
17:30I have four kids, three grandkids.
17:34Now they're all grown,
17:35except I have a daughter that's 16.
17:39Always inputting them first.
17:41When I went to this pre-apprenticeship class,
17:44I went in thinking,
17:46okay, wow, I don't have a job now.
17:48What am I going to do?
17:50Bye, see you.
17:52Wish me well, okay?
17:54And this job fair coming up,
17:56hey, they're not promising us a job,
17:59but it's an opportunity.
18:02The way God made me, I'm an outgoing person.
18:04I like learning.
18:05I like seeing things.
18:07I'm like, wow, how did they do this,
18:10and how did they do that?
18:11To me, it just keeps me going.
18:14I feel like there's more for me.
18:16Come on, ladies.
18:24Now, who's excited about today?
18:26Three, come on.
18:28Yes, two claps.
18:30Okay, we have employers out there.
18:32They are prepared to hire.
18:34There are positions available.
18:36So I need you to shake hands,
18:38get to know, meet these employers.
18:40Clap it up.
18:41All right, so in three, two, one, I have a plan.
18:44One, two, three.
18:48Let me have a plan, all right?
18:50I have a plan.
18:51Let's go.
18:52Let's get it.
18:53How are you?
18:55My name is Ashby.
18:57Ashby.
18:58Ashby.
18:59Ashby.
18:59Ashby, okay.
19:00I'm Denisha.
19:01Denisha, nice to meet you.
19:02How you doing?
19:03My name is Andrea.
19:04Hi, Andrea.
19:05I'm Denisha.
19:06Nice to meet you.
19:07I am willing to kind of start at the low,
19:10the totem hole, and work my way up.
19:12But I really want to do an electrical,
19:14but I also do like painting.
19:16This whole nine weeks has been like,
19:18it's a possibility.
19:19It's a possibility,
19:20and you don't know what the possibility is.
19:23But after today, I know we're the next steps.
19:26This is really what I want to do.
19:28It's not like a thought anymore.
19:29It may be reality.
19:31Today is important because we look for people
19:36with all skill levels.
19:37When I first started, I had never worked outside before.
19:40The job that they were hiring for was an outside job.
19:43But like I told the lady,
19:44if you give me an opportunity, then I'll make you proud.
19:47So that's what we look for.
19:49And just the connection which she built,
19:51I think is a great opportunity for us
19:53to get some good candidates.
19:54I am beyond proud of this cohort.
19:57What we did today and what we've done these nine weeks,
20:00that very thing that we have wanted to do.
20:02I want to encourage everyone to go out, seek a goal,
20:07set that goal, set baby steps to accomplish it,
20:10and go get it, no matter where you are in life.
20:12I'm looking forward to meeting you and learning more from you.
20:15And thank you for your time.
20:17God, thank you.
20:18Okay, guys, we're going to start summing the career fair up
20:21in a moment.
20:22So please make your final touch points and rounds
20:25as we start to clean up, okay?
20:27Knowing that an employee was there,
20:29knowing that we are new to the construction field,
20:35knowing those things is really hopeful.
20:41Job well done.
20:42Let's give it up for our employers, please, y'all.
20:46And let's give it up for our pre-apprentices.
20:49Way to show up.
20:50Although our classes are done, they're coming to a closure.
20:54Graduation is quickly approaching.
20:57This was an opportunity for them to show up, show out,
21:00and kind of show what they know now.
21:02And they did that.
21:03They did that.
21:03Thank you for being here.
21:05All right, everybody have a good weekend.
21:07It's a wrap.
21:23The coordination of the hundred people that are here today,
21:27most of them are volunteers.
21:29It's just a different style of job site.
21:32Just as crazy, just as hectic, but just a lot faster paced.
21:36And that's kind of this bliss build process.
21:39So who here is a first day volunteering?
21:44All right.
21:45All right.
21:49So all of our new rookies, at any point, if you feel like you don't have a task,
21:55just find a group, find a team leader in that group, and ask how you can help.
22:00Do we have homeowners?
22:01And if we do, can you raise your hands?
22:03How are you?
22:05Come on up here.
22:06Hey, homeowners.
22:07Homeowners.
22:08Come on up here.
22:09Come on up here.
22:10Come on up here.
22:10We can't see y'all.
22:11Come on.
22:11So this here is Joe.
22:17The housing market here is really difficult.
22:21It's an incredible city, and it's like, it's hard to kind of stay in Flagstaff
22:25because of those rent prices.
22:28Putting hands on my house and actually working for the house, it's an incredible feeling.
22:36Okay.
22:37All right, Joe.
22:38Well, this is our team.
22:39These are CCC students, so freshmen, sophomores that try to build these houses inside of our
22:43shop at night.
22:44So if you have more work to tag along, we'll do some chatting real quick.
22:51Our kitchen sink, stuff like that, will be in this area.
22:53The refrigerator is probably going to be right here underneath the staircase.
22:57They are a lot bigger than when we started building these things, right?
23:00Yeah, I know 100%.
23:01Once you see, when you first see the plans, and it's only this by this, that's really
23:05tidy until you come in here, and it's kind of a nice space.
23:08I mean, this is a house that you guys put in panels.
23:10Pretty cool to see it up, huh?
23:13I was looking to see if I could see anything familiar.
23:15It's just like, it's so hard because we did so many.
23:19I did do that window.
23:21This one?
23:21Because I had to put this plywood in here.
23:23Oh.
23:25And you guys, this is a learning process.
23:28Good night, son.
23:37You could probably ask any contractor or any construction worker what their first project
23:42was, and they'll remember it.
23:45I always called it building my monuments.
23:48Those students, I really took something from a piece of paper to some pieces of wood on
23:52the floor, and this is now a house that someone's going to live in for years and years to come.
23:59This is bigger than just a class project.
24:03Their first mining was building someone's future.
24:07So, going up the stairs here, this is where I'm going to kind of have my bed where me and
24:12the pup are going to sleep.
24:14Washer and dryer is going to be up on the side here.
24:17But yeah, this is kind of all of it.
24:21I've been feeling like I'm living in a dream where I just, I can't believe this is actually happening.
24:28I love Flagstaff.
24:30I've been a part of this community for years.
24:32You know, it's become my little bubble.
24:33I don't want to have to leave just because I can't afford it.
24:36What I was finding is that the rental market itself was almost pushing me out of Flagstaff.
24:41And then the housing market was entirely out of reach.
24:4618 years, 18 different homes or places, honestly.
24:50It gives me an opportunity to obviously be a homeowner, be banking some money.
24:55And to have my own space is also really awesome after 18 years.
25:01I have been relying on every individual in this crowd to make this dream a reality not only for our
25:08first 10 families,
25:10but then for another 30 families after that.
25:13And then of course, we're leaning hard on our friends at the city to find us more land so we
25:19can build hundreds of these homes for Flagstaff.
25:35Takes a team to build America and we got to look at it that way.
25:40Sit on the deck, sit on the deck.
25:43That pride piece is something that's valuable for any job that you're in.
25:47Get those guys riled up.
25:48Why didn't you get in there?
25:49Let me see.
25:49For a construction worker when they can see that house, or they can see that bridge,
25:53or they can see something that they built that's still withstanding the test of time,
25:58that's when it becomes a monument.
25:59Say, see, see, see.
26:01Say, see, see.
26:03There you go.
26:04Hopefully we're building that pride within the student, which is building pride within our community.
26:10I hope it's my legacy.
26:27I'm Hunter Golke, and I'm from Washington State.
26:30I'm from the great state of Ohio.
26:32West Virginia.
26:33I'm competing for HVAC.
26:34Aviation Maintenance Technology General.
26:36Health and Knowledge Bowl, so whoop, excited.
26:39Whatever comes out of it, whether he wins a medal or not, if you make it to Nationals, you're already
26:45a winner anyway.
26:46Welcome to NLST 2024, Hills USA.
26:51There are no limits to what we can do together this week.
26:56I think you have to be competitive to be successful.
26:59There's always somebody better.
27:01So if you're better, then get out of the way because I'm coming.
27:05That's the way you got to look at it.
27:24All right, look here.
27:26I ain't going to be able to talk to you, so you know what you got to do.
27:28Yeah.
27:29Slow down.
27:30All right.
27:30Write all your stuff on the wood so you don't forget it.
27:32Right.
27:33All right, dude.
27:34All right.
27:36We got it.
27:43Cleveland.
27:44Nice to meet you.
27:44Nice to meet you.
27:44What state are you from?
27:45Pennsylvania.
27:46Pennsylvania?
27:46Okay.
27:47Georgia.
27:48Okay.
27:50Safety first.
27:52You have a question about a tool or a piece of equipment.
27:55Ask us.
27:57And it's time.
28:00Let's go.
28:01Best of luck.
28:19We weren't allowed to see it yesterday.
28:26Oh, my God.
28:29Man, I'm glad we covered them inset doors.
28:32Woo!
28:34It's a doable project, but you got to make the legs.
28:38You got to make the box.
28:39You got a drawer.
28:40They have a decorative molding on top.
28:42I would probably say, if we have three people completed today, I would buy you lunch.
28:52Right now, they're sitting down with their paper.
28:54They're making a cut list.
28:56They're making a cut list.
28:56And then they're going to their wood.
28:58And they're making their marks.
28:59Just getting ready to start doing the work.
29:02Cleveland was smart.
29:03He walked the floor to figure out where all the machines were.
29:06Then he came back and started planning.
29:08That was smart.
29:08What did he tell you this morning when you asked him to buy him breakfast?
29:13Oh.
29:14He said, no, I want to stay hungry.
29:17Yeah.
29:21Probably one of the biggest challenges that they will face is they have an oversized sheet
29:27of plywood that several parts need to be cut out of.
29:30And if they cut something wrong, we do not give them any extra material.
29:41We encourage them to problem solve.
29:44I'd rather have a cabinet that's an inch too small, that's built well, than have something very sloppy.
29:55We purposely designed the contest with, yes, your technical skills, but we also build in all of your soft skills.
30:05Critical thinking, time management, problem solving.
30:09All of that is built in.
30:11So we're testing everything that you would have working for one of us.
30:22That should have been lined up with that, so.
30:27Oh well.
30:29I got two options.
30:31I go cut again and put some more wood fill in there.
30:38I'll take the points and go like that way.
30:39I don't know what's worse, but it's true.
30:43They're doing good.
30:44Yeah, I think he made two mistakes, but I think he corrected them.
30:48And right now I'm going to give him a strong three and a half, so.
30:51You're doing pretty good.
30:53Three and a half out of how many?
30:55Eight.
30:57I don't like ten.
31:04I want you to look around, and I want you to see how many cases have been made.
31:08But if you look, you only got four cases on this whole side, and I think I counted three over
31:14there.
31:15That's not good.
31:24Just because you are 100% complete doesn't necessarily mean that your project is the best of the day.
31:34If you're 50% or 75% and everything is perfect, you could be the best of the day.
31:4830 minutes.
31:5230 minutes.
32:1130 minutes.
32:1230 minutes.
32:1530 minutes.
32:1730 minutes.
32:1930 minutes.
32:2230 minutes.
32:2430 minutes.
32:2530 minutes.
32:2530 minutes.
32:2530 minutes.
32:2530 minutes.
32:3230 minutes.
32:3930 minutes.
32:42Cabinet makers! Tools down! Tools down!
32:49Yeah, thanks.
32:54Good job, you guys.
32:57Hey, good job.
33:04You okay? You okay?
33:06Yeah, I had fun, man, you know.
33:07All right. You got kind of serious on me the last hour or so.
33:12Yeah, I did. I'm about tired. I got the team dance off, you know.
33:17You did good, man.
33:26I feel like I did pretty good, you know.
33:29You look like you did really good.
33:30Could have been better, but I'm a little tired.
33:39Yeah, I did.
33:42I had a good time out there.
33:43You know, even though I didn't get all the way finished,
33:45I still feel really good about, you know, what I did get done.
33:48I'm exhausted. My feet hurt.
33:51Mentally tired. Mr. Umron been staring at me all day, so.
33:58They've already won.
34:00You know, even if they didn't win, they won,
34:02because they were part of something,
34:04and it got bigger and bigger and bigger.
34:06They're not quitters.
34:08And I love not quitters.
34:25And now as we close for a successful week,
34:28let's celebrate coming together.
34:36Jada Simone Bajethon from Georgia.
34:42Congratulations, winners.
34:45Would the finalists in firefighting college post
34:48secondary please make their way to the holding area
34:50to the right of the stage.
34:52Nebraska, Georgia, Utah.
34:58Congratulations, winners.
35:00Let's go, here we go.
35:02Would the finalists in cabinet making college post
35:05secondary please make their way to the stage?
35:07Utah, Indiana, Maine.
35:12Sorry.
35:14Let's all do it.
35:15Let's go, let's go.
35:16Let's go, we're going to get our first champion.
35:19Christina Gold.
35:20Christina Gold.
35:21Christina from Pennsylvania.
35:23Adam Robinson from Pennsylvania.
35:23And Christina Gold.
35:24Ethan Jacobson from Utah.
35:30You know we had a good run.
35:34You know, I still feel like a winner anyway because, you know, all the practice, all the
35:39work, you know, it still was for my benefit because, you know, it made me that much better.
35:43You know, so.
35:44Okay, I'm ready.
35:45He competed against guys that probably been doing, you know, on a day-to-day basis, and
35:50he was a part-time student, so he did well.
35:53You know, he did really well.
36:08What do you think your first step is going to be to move forward?
36:14My plan is, you know, to build a better lifestyle for myself also.
36:17I want to train other people.
36:20So you just paid forward?
36:21Yeah, just paid forward.
36:25That is a fine line between leadership and knowledge.
36:28Right.
36:29You know, leadership is recognizing that that person needs help.
36:33Right.
36:34And you do that pretty good.
36:35Yep, and, you know, knowledge is one of the greatest things I got to give, you know.
36:39And knowledge can't be hoarded, you know, you can't keep it all to yourself.
36:43The biggest thing is, it's about the students.
36:46Because when I leave this world, you're going to be here.
36:49Right.
36:49You got to tell that other person what to do.
36:52You know, look at all the buildings around here.
36:54Somebody had to show them how to do it.
36:55Right.
36:56And that's the way I like to think I try to do that.
37:00And I'd like to see you as an instructor.
37:03Okay.
37:06I think being the leader is being a teacher.
37:27Stand up, please.
37:29Stand up, those three.
37:32Stand up, those three.
37:35Stand up, that's wonderful.
37:36Welcome.
37:39And?
37:39Once a person learns a skill, you can never take that from them.
37:43Once you learn it, you can't unlearn it.
37:58I think the biggest thing I love about construction is I'm just proud of myself.
38:05I'm learning something that I actually care about, and it's really cool, and seeing how
38:08it's done, I mainly just love that I'm able to take care of myself no matter what.
38:22Give me two claps, two claps, alright.
38:27This has been a ride.
38:32I tell everyone, you have cheerleaders out there waiting to help you, you got support
38:36system waiting, you just gotta keep taking steps.
38:41This is a puzzle of how do you bring these skill sets together.
38:51That brings me joy, and I'm honored that I get to do that every day.
39:08All right y'all, it's the moment we have all been waiting for, it's certificate time.
39:15Andrea Jackson.
39:21Life, it's like construction.
39:23Sometimes you're a pile of wood, bricks, nails, and tools, but then everything comes together,
39:31and it just, it teaches you how to smile despite the circumstances.
39:44Denisha Harris.
39:46We went to the job site, and we got our PPE on.
39:50I was smiling from like ear to ear.
39:52It makes me feel like this is what I will be doing one day in life.
40:06So official, right?
40:09I am going to frame it.
40:10I'm framing it and putting it on the wall.
40:18We had some very good students this year.
40:21It's going to be sad to see them leave.
40:24We got them when they didn't know anything.
40:26Now they know something, they're on their way to another pathway.
40:31Twenty years ago, I walked for law school.
40:36I'm more sure now than I was when I started that this is what I want to do.
40:41So it is an important like milestone in that respect.
40:44So it's nice.
40:48Watching them leave the nest and go out and get their own jobs and do their own thing.
40:51That's one of the most fulfilling things about being a teacher is when you actually see them graduate that day.
40:57Let's get it right on the edge and nice big crow's foot.
41:01Here we go.
41:02When they build something with their own hands and they see it go up and they're like someone's going to
41:06live here,
41:07they're never going to forget that.
41:09They're never going to forget what they did to get there.
41:15Ideally what you want to do is you want to press and then you want to twist like that.
41:19I don't think carpentry is a bad idea for anyone to take.
41:22It's just something good for human development, being able to make things or fix things for yourself.
41:29Whatever you have in this lifetime, make the best of it.
41:33Whether it's good, it's bad, there's always another day.
41:37Your time might not be right this second, but it could be 10 seconds from now.
41:47So much room for activities now.
41:49And then we'll be painting all the siding.
41:51I'm excited about what the future has in storage for me from here.
41:55They kind of lit a little fire that had been waiting to be lit for a long time.
42:02And so this is kind of where the whole Habitat project started was right here on this lot.
42:07Built by students, we got about 100 hours into this house.
42:11We probably have 60 into that other house.
42:13So each time we do it, we're getting faster at it and better at it.
42:19Hey, how you doing Alex?
42:20That's one of my students right there that helped build these houses.
42:25That's one of my students that helped build those houses right there.
42:28How you doing Alex?
42:33By next year, we're going to have job openings of over 500,000 construction workers in our country.
42:41I'm only producing 24 new ones.
42:45My part of the world is a small piece, and maybe we'll make a dent in it.
42:50But it's going to take a lot of work.
42:52A lot of work from a lot of people to make it happen.
43:04I'm only producing a lot of people to make it happen.
43:06sw gob dominance

43:06Here's where the team has played a lot of work.
43:08Do you think that's been a product for your work today?
