00:00Ex-teachers George and Carolyn Jones want to give up their Brighton home for a more peaceful way of life.
00:06So will the mountain ranges and spectacular scenery of Spain's Ebro River region be the tranquil haven they're looking for?
00:40Ex-dancer Carolyn and her handy husband George from Brighton don't want to be beside the British seaside any longer.
00:47Instead they want to move permanently to the kinder climates of Spain but will they find a Spanish property worth
00:55pirouetting over to?
00:56As it stands, perfect.
00:57Or will they be high-kicking their way back home?
01:00I absolutely hate it Victoria, I really hate it.
01:07Carolyn and George Jones have done it all throughout their 35 years of marriage.
01:12He used to be a teacher and is now a cabinet maker with a love of fishing.
01:17She was a dancer who has can-canned the nights away at the famous Moulin Rouge and has now developed
01:23a love of flamenco.
01:25With grown-up children and a passion for the Latin life, they now want to leave Britain behind to unwind
01:31in the Spanish sun.
01:33Selling their home in England will give them the ready cash to explore what bargains are available.
01:38And where in Spain do they intend to relax whilst dabbling in their favourite pastimes?
01:45In the north-east's Ebro Valley, just two hours south of Barcelona.
01:51Unlike the southern coastal regions, this area's landscape is green and lush with mountains and rivers shaping the scenery.
01:59Castles and Arabic towers punctuate the vistas, surrounded by fruit orchards that have been standing for thousands of years.
02:06While tourism is up 30% over the last five years, tourists don't seem to have taken over the area.
02:13Most of the 13,000 annual visitors blend in with the locals, fishing and exploring the countryside.
02:20Property is 40% cheaper here than in the Costa del Sol, and it's much more basic in style.
02:26But there are quite complicated property laws concerning building and agricultural land.
02:31With the right expert advice, though, this shouldn't present any problems.
02:35Prices have increased here by 20% over the last couple of years, so the Ebro Valley looks set to
02:41be a good investment.
02:43Carolyn and George have around £140,000, which could be stretched to £180,000 if they find their perfect property.
02:52Carolyn and George, what has prompted you to move abroad?
02:55Like most people, I think you reach a time in your life when you reassess things,
02:59and our children are sort of married and almost married and moved on, and it's time for us to move
03:05on, really.
03:06So this particular region, the Ebro River region, have you been here before?
03:10We've read about it, but we've never been here before.
03:12We've read about the fishing and all these various activities that take place,
03:16but we've wanted to visit, and this is our first opportunity.
03:19If you come over here, what are you going to spend your time doing?
03:22Well, I've just started to learn to play the guitar, and as well as learning to play them,
03:25I've also started to learn how to make them, which is another pastime that I'd like to get really involved
03:31in.
03:32I enjoy my flamenco dancing, and I'm sure I can get a taste of that in Barcelona
03:35and catch up with theatre and museums there.
03:38So in terms of the property you're looking to buy, what's important?
03:41What's your ideal?
03:43For me, I don't want to be too isolated.
03:45I want to be fairly close to the town, and that's partly because if you're in a new place,
03:49I think it's helpful to integrate.
03:51And George, do you want a bit more peace and quiet?
03:53I would like more peace and quiet.
03:55Having lived in London and also lived in central Brighton,
03:58the idea appeals to me.
03:59Just a complete change from what we had in England, really.
04:02And what size property are you after, George?
04:05I think what we'd like is possibly two bedrooms, three would be even better,
04:10and some outside space, and possibly an area for a workshop,
04:14so I can get all my tools over from the UK.
04:16OK, well, let's go see what I've got.
04:17OK.
04:19First off, I want to take Carolyn and George to the stunning area of Freginales
04:23in the Montseer region of the Ebro, just 20 minutes from the coast.
04:36Here, the 400, mainly Catalan residents, enjoy the gentle pace of life,
04:42contrasting perfectly with the lanes of bustling Brighton.
04:47With neighbouring rustic properties being the only thing to interrupt the stunning views,
04:52facilities here are limited.
04:54But the nearest decent-sized town is just five minutes away,
04:58as is the train station, which runs frequent trains to Barcelona.
05:03So what would you think of living in a village like this one?
05:06I think I'd be a bit worried in the evenings.
05:08I'd like something to be going on, as I say, a bit of flamenco
05:11or some sort of community activity.
05:13Well, I don't think there's too many nightclubs around here,
05:16but you never know when you scratch the surface
05:17and find out what the locals get up to in the evening.
05:19What about you, George?
05:20This would suit me down to the ground.
05:22Nice and quiet, peaceful.
05:23No noise.
05:25The property I've found here has been recently renovated
05:28and used to be a farmer's workstation or Almazen.
05:32So this is the house here.
05:34What do you think?
05:36Gosh.
05:36Very nice.
05:37Not what we were expecting, I don't think.
05:39Not at all.
05:39Really?
05:40No.
05:40Why? What were we expecting?
05:42Having driven up here,
05:44I thought we were just going to see a pile of bricks and a few tiles.
05:47I didn't expect anything quite like that.
05:49The house has two bedrooms, land with olive groves
05:52and a price tag of £121,000.
05:55He's done a pretty good job with the front garden here.
05:58OK.
06:00OK.
06:00We'll come and have a look at the living room first.
06:04OK.
06:06Um...
06:06A little bit small.
06:08Smaller than I expected from the outside
06:09because it looked like sort of a new villa
06:11and I thought it would be a bit more spacious.
06:13From the outside, it does look like a modern build, doesn't it?
06:16But it's actually over 100 years old.
06:18It was bought and renovated by a British couple
06:21and they finished the work on it about three years ago.
06:23In fact, this is what it looked like when they bought it.
06:27Wow.
06:28I can't imagine that that's the same building.
06:30So coming up these stairs here,
06:32this mezzanine level is actually one of your two bedrooms.
06:36OK.
06:37They use it as the master bedroom.
06:40It's very pretty, but it takes the height from downstairs.
06:44Yes, it does, doesn't it?
06:45It sort of cuts the room in two.
06:47I don't really like it.
06:48No.
06:48No, no.
06:49OK.
06:50So here is your kitchen area.
06:52OK.
06:53I know kitchen space is quite important for you, Karen.
06:56It is, yeah.
06:57It feels a little bit boxy.
06:58I mean, there's room to eat in here,
07:00but I quite like a larger dining area.
07:02I think our family's growing a little bit now
07:04and when we're all together, it would be nice to have that space.
07:07But it's been nicely done again.
07:08I mean, it's beautifully presented.
07:10And up here we have a lovely little sun trap.
07:14It's beautiful.
07:15Really beautiful, isn't it?
07:16It is, yeah.
07:17Fantastic.
07:18And look, you've got neighbours dotted around amongst the olive trees.
07:22Not too isolated.
07:23No.
07:24In fact, you can see the town.
07:25It's just there.
07:26It's a little bit further than I thought,
07:27but I'm sure we can get your bikes out.
07:30Yeah, you can cycle there, yes, easily.
07:32With one and a half acres of land, there are 25 olive trees.
07:36If they didn't want to look after the crops themselves,
07:39Carolyn and George could hand care over to the local farmer
07:42who would give them back up to 50% of the oil yielded.
07:46This is one of the most modern renovations
07:48that I've looked at in the region.
07:49And, OK, it might not be George and Carolyn's taste on the inside,
07:53but with views like this,
07:54I wonder if they'd be willing to invest
07:56and really make this place their own.
07:59Well, I think the first impressions really came round the corner.
08:01It looked quite imposing.
08:03It looked really nice.
08:05Yeah.
08:06Having looked around it.
08:07It doesn't feel quite right.
08:08I don't think it's rustic enough.
08:11Hello.
08:12Hello.
08:13You've had a chance to look around on your own
08:15and look around the land.
08:16So tell me what your final thoughts are on this property.
08:19Where are we at?
08:19Although it's an old property,
08:21it just feels too new and too boxy and too sort of square.
08:26I'd like something with a bit more sort of traditional character
08:29that has a bit more feeling of space and flow through it.
08:32Well, I know that you're interested in looking at properties
08:34across the board, aren't you?
08:35So how about we go and look at something now
08:37that's the lower end of the market.
08:39It has got the three bedrooms you're after
08:41and it is in the town.
08:42So everything's on hand for you.
08:44Sounds good.
08:45Yeah.
08:45Let's go.
08:46OK.
08:46Well, although this house does have many of the things
08:49they're looking for,
08:51Carolyn and George agree that it isn't the one.
08:54Perhaps what I've got to show them next
08:56will put the spring back in their two-step.
09:01The town of Moré d'Ebre has a population of 5,000.
09:06Plenty of shops, restaurants and transport links.
09:09Perched on a hill overlooking a river,
09:11the town is marketing itself
09:13as one of the region's best place for fishing.
09:16Catfish are one of the most famous types of fish found here
09:19and I can think of one person
09:21who might think that the location of this next property
09:24is a real catch.
09:26How do you fancy living by the river?
09:27I'd love it.
09:28You would, wouldn't you?
09:29I would love it, definitely.
09:30Oh, yes, this would my idea of heaven.
09:32How about you, Carolyn?
09:33Is it your cup of tea?
09:34I think I might become a bit of a fisherman's widow here
09:37but it's so beautiful
09:38that I think with a good book and a glass of wine
09:40I could join him down here.
09:42Exactly.
09:42If you can't beat him, join him.
09:44Thanks to the town's proximity to the river
09:47and its up-and-coming status,
09:49bargain properties, as in the rest of the region,
09:51are not ten a penny.
09:53But I have managed to find one for a snip of their budget.
09:58This house is set over four floors,
10:01has three bedrooms
10:02and is available for an incredible £87,000.
10:05Could this be just the bargain they'd hope to find?
10:09Well, in this small town,
10:10everybody knows everybody's business
10:12and kept up to date by the tannoy system,
10:15which is on the corner of the house we're going to look at.
10:18Oh, right.
10:18And you kept up to date with all the births, deaths, marriages,
10:21even down to missing pets.
10:24Modern-day town car.
10:26Indeed it is.
10:26So this is the house we're going to look at.
10:28From the outside, what do you think?
10:29Oh, it's sweet.
10:30So the house is spread over four levels
10:33and this is your kitchen dining room.
10:36That's a nice space.
10:37Very nice, yes.
10:38And this used to be split into two rooms
10:40but I'm really pleased they opened it up.
10:43Really lovely.
10:44Yeah.
10:44And a lovely view through there.
10:45Really pretty.
10:47This is one of the three bedrooms
10:49and it actually used to be the garage.
10:53Oh, all right.
10:54But they converted it into your bedroom.
10:56I like the simplicity of it.
10:57It's really just simple.
10:59I think I'd probably turn this back into a garage.
11:01Oh.
11:02Workspace, yes.
11:04I knew you would.
11:05While you're working here, George,
11:07you've got a jacuzzi and you're en suite.
11:09It's really nice.
11:10Very nice.
11:11Really nice, yeah.
11:12Very nice.
11:12But I think I'd still try for the garage
11:14but I know for well I'd lose.
11:16I was going to say you can try
11:17but no way, the jacuzzi's lovely.
11:19If you think you're going to put your machine tools in there
11:20you've got another thing coming.
11:22Absolutely.
11:22I'm with you on this one, Carrie.
11:24We'll talk about it.
11:25Yeah, will we?
11:28How do you feel about having all these stairs in the house, though?
11:32Well, they're OK for a few years, I think, yet
11:34but I'm not sure if I'd want to get really old in this house.
11:37Well, you're fit.
11:38You should be all right.
11:39Wow.
11:40How many more?
11:43Traditionally, this part of the house
11:45was actually where the chickens were kept.
11:48Up here?
11:48Yes.
11:49Gosh.
11:50Isn't it lovely?
11:51It's like a real little dent.
11:52It's a real surprise, isn't it,
11:53when you come round the corner.
11:55You're just...
11:55Yeah.
11:56Four-story farm.
11:57Yeah.
11:58Well, shall I just leave you guys to have a nose around
12:01to go and have a look at the patio out there and know...
12:03I'll see you up front.
12:04Lovely.
12:04It's lovely to have a look out here.
12:06Gosh, this is nice, isn't it?
12:07Really nice space.
12:09Yeah.
12:09It'll be great to have the coffee and things up here.
12:12The view's lovely.
12:13It's really beautiful.
12:15Swallows.
12:16Yeah.
12:16I think this place is a really good investment
12:18and the good news is, I think Carolyn thinks so too.
12:21I'm just not quite so sure if George is as keen.
12:24My own personal view is probably a little bit too high.
12:28Do you think so?
12:29Yeah, I think so.
12:29Oh, I don't.
12:30I actually like it.
12:32So we're going to have round,
12:33not only about the steps down here,
12:34but about the jacuzzi and everything else here
12:36because I really like it.
12:38The neighbours are mostly local,
12:40so the first language spoken is the regional language of Catalan.
12:43There is, however, a local college
12:46offering foreigners free classes in this as well as Spanish.
12:50So Carolyn, this is definitely more on the tracks
12:52of what you're after, isn't it?
12:53Yeah, it's perfect for me.
12:54George, I don't feel I'm pleasing you 100% here.
12:57It's close.
12:58OK.
12:59How could we better it?
13:00What's your ideal?
13:02A little bit more outside space would be very welcome.
13:05Well, in order to get your outside space,
13:08size of property and still be closed to a town,
13:10you are going to have to up your budget a fair bit.
13:12Now, I've got something in mind to show you.
13:14That's around the £170,000 mark.
13:17So how does that grab you?
13:19You didn't.
13:20Fine.
13:21Well, at least they agree on what to see next.
13:24But with differing ideas on what they're looking for
13:26and opinions divided on the last house,
13:29can I get Carolyn and George back in step with the next houses?
13:33This is definitely what we were looking for.
13:35Or will they still be dancing solo?
13:37I'd just get bad fives from it.
13:39The room's fine, absolutely fine.
13:46George and Carolyn Jones want to box up their belongings in Brighton
13:50and move to a sunnier and more peaceful way of life in Spain.
13:54Fans of fishing and flamenco,
13:56they're hoping to find their ideal home here in the Ebro River region.
14:00I don't really like it.
14:01No.
14:02Ex-dancer Carolyn and husband George are two houses into their search
14:06and have not always been dancing cheek to cheek.
14:09You can look too high.
14:10Do you think so?
14:10I don't.
14:12Will what I've got to show them next help them to reach an agreement?
14:17The next property I've found is in the prestigious town of Jesus,
14:21just north of the region's capital, Tortosa.
14:24The town is a happy balance of vibrant bars and restaurants
14:28and historic churches, monastery and a convent.
14:33There's also plenty of local culture to be had.
14:37Well, this is just a class for the local women.
14:39Come down and join in.
14:41And it's just a five-minute drive out of the town as well.
14:43It's a great way of meeting people and learning Spanish and keeping fit.
14:47Keeping fit, exactly.
14:48Do you get any pleasure out of it, George?
14:51I like washing it, but...
14:53Not partaking.
14:56The property market here reflects the town's dynamic atmosphere
15:00with a variety of houses available from shabby townhouse to a stored villa.
15:06Prices are quite reasonable with a two-bedroom house likely to cost around £120,000.
15:12So hopefully this next location is going to suit the both of you
15:15because it's on the outskirts of a town,
15:18so just walking distance from all the action,
15:20but it's a very desirable residential area
15:22because it's still got that rural feel about it.
15:25Yeah.
15:25It's going to keep you happy, George.
15:27What do you think?
15:28Very nice.
15:28Yeah, it's nice.
15:29This next house has four bedrooms, a swimming pool,
15:32and is just nine years old.
15:34It's available for £171,000.
15:38This house is actually owned by a very renowned local artist.
15:42You've got about half an acre of land to play with,
15:44lots of outbuildings.
15:46We're coming up to the main house.
15:47Oh, wow, the pool!
15:49Oh, yes.
15:50This is, in fact, one of the very few filtered swimming pools
15:52that I've seen in this area.
15:54This is definitely what we're looking for.
15:55Yeah, this is breakfast on the terrace with the orange juice
15:58and relaxing, terrific.
16:00So as we come in here,
16:02your living room, dining room and kitchens
16:04would have all in one long room.
16:06Normally I wouldn't like the kitchen as part of the lounge.
16:08I like them separate, but it does suit this room.
16:11Oh, yes.
16:11You feel better in this, don't you?
16:12I can tell.
16:13Yeah?
16:14Yeah.
16:14Would you make any changes to this room, do you think?
16:16I would probably like to have some sort of French door
16:19or something on there with tinted glass or something.
16:21Way to appreciate the pool area a little bit more.
16:23I'd prefer to leave it exactly as it is.
16:25The less work, the better, and enjoy what's around here.
16:28Yeah, yeah.
16:29The room's fine, absolutely fine.
16:31As it stands, perfect.
16:32Good.
16:33Well, come up here and have a look at the kitchen.
16:34OK.
16:35Because you've got, again, old mod cons.
16:37It's still quite modern, isn't it?
16:38It is.
16:38It is, yes.
16:40But you've got this massive larder here.
16:42Gosh, that's great, isn't it?
16:43Yes, very nice.
16:44Well, follow me back round here,
16:47because down this corridor, you've got all the bedrooms.
16:50And it's quite nice, because even though you haven't actually
16:52got windows, you've got a nice skylight.
16:53Yes.
16:54And a jungle.
16:55Yes.
16:56And in here is the master bedroom
16:58with an en suite bathroom there.
17:00Oh, it's nice, isn't it?
17:02Very nice.
17:02So I'm getting the feeling, as soon as you walked
17:04into this property, in fact, as soon as you saw it
17:06from the outside, you loved it, didn't you?
17:08Yeah, absolutely.
17:10It's really what we envisaged, I think, more, isn't it?
17:13It's more of what we want.
17:14It's really, really nicely set out.
17:16Brilliant.
17:16I do know that the owner is very keen to sell.
17:19This house has been on the market now for four months,
17:21so there is definitely room for negotiations on the price.
17:24I think you could go in at £155,000
17:27and negotiate from there.
17:29That sounds pretty good, doesn't it?
17:31Very reasonable, yes.
17:32Well, before you make any decisions,
17:34why don't you go and have a look around the land
17:35and the property, and I'll meet you out front.
17:37Sounds great.
17:38This is actually a lovely spot for grandchildren.
17:41Yeah.
17:41They can have the trikes out here and paint and make a mess.
17:45Sunbathing area as well.
17:46Yeah.
17:47The house is connected to Maine's electricity,
17:49but the water is supplied by a community well.
17:52The cost is reasonable, however, at just £9 a month.
17:57Yeah, I think this is really fantastic.
17:59I know you said you didn't want to do alterations,
18:02but I would still quite like to be sitting here
18:04looking at the pool and the palm tree.
18:06Well...
18:07Maybe.
18:08Maybe.
18:08I don't think that's a priority.
18:11It's not a priority, but there isn't much else to do.
18:13No.
18:14So what are your thoughts now on this house?
18:16It's perfect at the moment, isn't it?
18:18It's just got everything we wanted,
18:20the space, the pool, the location,
18:22not being isolated.
18:23Sounds good.
18:24Well, I'd really like to show you a house
18:26that's going to keep you within your budget.
18:27Now, I've got something in mind to show you
18:29that's in a similar good location
18:31and it's still the good size that you're after,
18:33but it does need renovating.
18:35Renovating is not really a problem.
18:36No.
18:37Phew!
18:38Finally a house they both like.
18:40But before I call off the search,
18:43I've got one last house to show them,
18:45which will complete the full spectrum of property
18:47available for their budget.
18:50The area of El Rigueur is in the foot
18:53of the Port Mountain Range
18:55in the lower Ebro region known as Bayesh Ebre.
18:59One of the things that this area is most famous for
19:02is Palma, which is made by local women.
19:04These are baskets popular with the farmers
19:07and shoppers throughout the region.
19:09Also popular with the locals,
19:11as well as visitors,
19:12is the village fountain
19:13as it's filled with some of the freshest water around,
19:16filtered down directly from the mountains.
19:18With a population of 2,000,
19:21the area has got a good selection of restaurants and bars,
19:24with even more choice in Tortosa,
19:26which is only a five-minute drive away.
19:29This house has four bedrooms,
19:31is close to local amenities,
19:33and leaves plenty of cash for any renovation,
19:35as it costs just £129,000.
19:39This house is just on the outside of a town,
19:41and the building itself is 200 years old,
19:44because it used to be an old olive mill,
19:46and it was converted into a house around 60 years ago.
19:49This is the property we're going to look at here.
19:51Gosh, that looks nice on the outside, doesn't it?
19:54It looks interesting, yes.
19:55Yes.
19:56OK, so it may be a little bit more Coronation Street
20:00than Catalan style at the moment, but...
20:02It is.
20:03First impressions.
20:06Not good.
20:07No.
20:07No.
20:07I just get bad vibes for a minute.
20:10Just don't...
20:10Just not my cup of tea.
20:11Don't like it.
20:12Really?
20:12As soon as you walk in, no.
20:14OK, well, bear with me a little bit,
20:15because there are a few amendments
20:17that you could make immediately.
20:18Like, knocking down this wall,
20:20you've got another living room here,
20:22which is a really good size.
20:24Well, let me just show you the bedroom,
20:25because I think it's got the best example
20:27of the amount of character
20:29that is to be found within this mill.
20:31I mean, you've got these amazing beams running here.
20:34I absolutely hate it, Victoria.
20:36I really hate it.
20:37It's like being in a coffin.
20:39It's bearing down on you.
20:41It just feels horrible.
20:43I can see why it waters down here.
20:45The house itself has got a lot of potential.
20:47There's so much we could actually do with this
20:49because of what we've done in the past.
20:51And it would keep it within your budget as well, still.
20:53Without having to take a mortgage,
20:55you could do this whole place up.
20:57Well, that would be a plus for us.
20:58Definitely would be a plus.
20:59But I couldn't really justify it.
21:02Despite the changes that could be made
21:03and the outside space here,
21:05it looks like nothing can compare
21:07to the love at first sight they both felt
21:09for the artist's house.
21:11Oh, I'm glad to be out to Victoria.
21:13I really am.
21:14It was just the wrong house.
21:16Yeah.
21:16With a clear favourite,
21:18I decided to take Carolyn and George back
21:20to have another look at the property
21:22as it's always a good idea
21:24to go back and look over any house
21:25that's caught your eye.
21:27You can see what you want to do to it
21:28whilst clarifying that it's the one you want.
21:32So, here we are back again.
21:34Yes.
21:34How are you feeling?
21:35Oh, really excited.
21:36Well, I don't think you need me
21:38to walk around with you this time,
21:39so I'm going to leave you guys on your own.
21:40Great.
21:41Thank you very much.
21:42Bye.
21:42OK.
21:43Fingers crossed.
21:44I should remember it.
21:46Yeah, I actually didn't notice the yellow tiles.
21:49Did you?
21:50No, I didn't, actually.
21:52Do we like yellow tiles?
21:53Well, it's my neck.
21:55My playroom.
21:56No, this is my playroom.
21:58Yours is down there.
21:59Oh, OK.
21:59Yeah, I like this
22:00because this is really a wet room, isn't it?
22:02I've organised a builder
22:03and his English-speaking associate
22:04to talk Carolyn and George
22:06through the work they'd want to do on the house.
22:09Yeah, so he's saying
22:10we can cover this area here with the terrace
22:13and then on this side here
22:16we put the roof like all the other ones around here.
22:22So the whole thing,
22:23the roof, the terrace, the door,
22:26everything £14,000 to £17,000.
22:28Yeah.
22:28No, that sounds good.
22:30Yeah.
22:30That's what you want to look at.
22:31Excellent.
22:32No, that's absolutely fine.
22:33Well, thank you very much.
22:34You're very welcome.
22:36Gracias.
22:38So how was that, looking round it again?
22:40Oh, it was great.
22:41Just what we want.
22:42So it's definitely clarified
22:43this is the house for you?
22:45Yeah, yeah,
22:46and I think talking to the builder really helped.
22:47Oh, yes, definitely.
22:48So what's the next step?
22:50I think the next step is
22:51we're just taking a few days away
22:52and then when we're back in the UK
22:54we're just going to sort out
22:55how we sort the mortgage out,
22:56whether it's a Spanish mortgage
22:57or a UK or how we do it.
22:59Sort out the financial side of things.
23:00Okay, well, how about for now
23:02I have a word of the estate agent for you.
23:04Make sure if there's any interest
23:06in this property at all
23:07that they let me know.
23:08Good luck with going home
23:09and sorting your mortgage out
23:10and keep me posted.
23:12I will.
23:12Thank you very much.
23:13I was thrilled.
23:18The Ebro River region
23:19is ripe with value for money houses
23:21but with stunning scenery
23:23and an emerging foreign interest
23:25buyers better get in quick
23:26to secure a bargain.
23:28Join me next time
23:29when I'll be searching
23:30for another place in the sun.
