00:02Ten-year-old, proud Bundjalung woman, Latoya Phillips, is developing her ring craft while
00:08expressing her culture and identity.
00:13All central to the process at the CUS Boxing First Nations Development Camp.
00:18I think it's great to bring kids together, particularly young First Nations kids that
00:22have an interest in boxing, but we also want to be able to bring them together so they
00:27can connect around culture, they understand the importance of the communities they come
00:31from and represent.
00:33These young athletes are experimenting with the sweet science, practising art in motion
00:39and building physical resilience.
00:41It feels tiring at first and then after you feel great like you've accomplished something
00:46for that day.
00:47They're also building mental fortitude.
00:50I left footy for boxing because boxing is just better, gives me confidence, strength,
00:55fitness and all that, it just feels like just so good.
00:59It's not just the boxing, it's seeing these young kids feel confident about themselves,
01:03watching their self-belief grow.
01:04The programme is designed to give these young fighters the skills to succeed in an elite
01:09boxing camp environment, as well as life outside the ring.
01:13I think a lot of Indigenous kids feel disconnected, whether it's with each other or they feel disconnected
01:19to their culture or their community.
01:21As the Kars boxing camp becomes family, there's still space for a title decider over sibling
01:28rivalry.
01:28I think we're going to spot tomorrow meet her.
01:30She likes it, but sometimes she's not into it as much as I normally am.
01:36She has good jabs and stuff.
01:37Proud First Nations athletes practicing a proud sporting tradition.
