The clock is ticking. And according to a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, humanity may have only 35 years left.

David Gross, who won the Nobel for his work on the fundamental forces of the universe, is now warning about something far more immediate: nuclear war.

In a Live Science interview, Gross estimated a 2% annual probability of nuclear conflict. Using the same math behind radioactive half-life, that gives civilization an expected lifespan of roughly 35 years.

"Currently, I spend part of my time trying to tell people that the chances of you living 50 [more] years are very small," Gross said. "Due to the danger of nuclear war, you have about 35 years."

Why now? Because the world is on edge.

Wars rage in Europe. Tensions flare in Asia. India and Pakistan — both nuclear-armed — have nearly clashed. Key treaties like New START are falling apart.

During the Cold War, there were two nuclear superpowers. Today, there are nine.

"Even three is infinitely more complicated than two," Gross said. "The agreements, the norms between countries, are all falling apart. Weapons are getting crazier. Automation, and perhaps even AI, will be in control of those instruments pretty soon."

Gross is famous for his work on asymptotic freedom and quantum chromodynamics. But now, he says the biggest obstacle to finishing a unified theory isn't physics — it's whether humanity survives long enough to finish it.

He's calling for urgent diplomacy, arms reduction, and AI governance. He warns that AI-controlled weapons could escalate faster than humans can intervene — and simulations already show a tendency toward nuclear use.

But Gross hasn't given up hope. He believes public awareness and coordinated action — like the global response to climate change — could still avert disaster.

The clock is ticking. ⏳☢️🌍
