00:01A fresh off host in the World Series, the All-Star Game, the mid-summer classic here at Globe Life
00:06Field in Arlington, Texas.
00:08Both lineups are loaded. The American League, obviously, a little bit deeper, but each pitcher is going to have their
00:15hands full.
00:16Well, Texas has kind of been the center of the baseball universe over the last year, and once again, it
00:20is the place to be.
00:21The All-Star Game comes up next.
00:23Corbin Burns, after six seasons in Milwaukee, traded to Baltimore this offseason, and, John, the Orioles hope that they have
00:29an ace right here that can help get them over the top.
00:32Yeah, he's been awesome for Baltimore. He has been what everything that Baltimore wanted.
00:37This challenge? Everybody's challenged, Mr. Ohtani.
00:39Ketel Marte climbs in at the All-Star Game for the first time in five seasons.
00:44Hits one on the ground, fielded on one hop to his left, Guerrero, and the first baseman flips to Burns,
00:49covering, and there is one down.
00:51And here comes Shohei Ohtani, who, in his first season with the Dodgers, has continued to push the limits.
00:57On track to be another MVP, even though he's only a DH this time.
01:01The payoff. Ohtani takes the walk and is the first baserunner of the game.
01:06Trey Turner, who's having a monster season for the Phillies, climbs in, swings at the first pitch, flies it to
01:12center field.
01:13There's Aaron Judge. There's out number two.
01:16So from one Philly to another at the plate is Bryce Harper.
01:19Look for Bryce to be a little aggressive here in the first inning.
01:22Harper swats a base hit down the line.
01:25Klon over to cut it off. Ohtani chugs into third.
01:28Harper is to second with a two-out double.
01:30So Bryce Harper in his first at bat in the All-Star Game in a long time, has a double.
01:36Two strikes, takes this pitch away, and goes away.
01:39Just kind of slaps at it.
01:41Bounced back to the mound.
01:43Burns has it, and he pitches around a couple base runners to put up a zero and get this All
01:48-Star Game rolling.
01:49One year after he was drafted, two months after he makes his Major League debut, Paul Skeen starts the All
01:55-Star Game.
01:56I can only imagine his heartbeat.
01:57He's been in big moments in college, so it's not like he's come from high school to this point.
02:01But he has electric stuff.
02:03It's just fun to watch him pitch and dominate.
02:06And we were going to see him against one of the top contact guys in the American League.
02:12There is that four-seamer at 100 miles per hour, popped into shallow center field, and an easy one for
02:17Trey Turner.
02:18For the first out, faces a guy who won Rookie of the Year last year and is an MVP candidate
02:23this season.
02:23And Gunnar Henderson is tapped in front of the plate, and the cadet hops off at the mound and fires
02:29it down there for round number two.
02:30Well, he's throwing fuel.
02:33See, right here, selfishly, I want to see a four-seam fastball.
02:37Mono-y-mono, go after one of the best in Soto.
02:40Speaking of problems, Paul Skeen just starting the All-Star Game.
02:43You're going to face him the first inning.
02:44You might face him hitting fourth.
02:46I make sure he faces it.
02:50That would be pretty cool.
02:52I'm really, you know, cross my fingers that it doesn't happen, but hoping for a one-two-three inning, but
02:57it could be worse.
02:58There's ball four.
02:59I think they crossed him up.
03:01That might have been a struggle, but he crossed him up.
03:03Baseball gods did it.
03:05Look at this pitch.
03:05He throws it right there and just missed it.
03:09And he points to Judge and says, I got you, big fella.
03:11Here's the matchup that folks are dreaming of.
03:14Paul Skeen's against Aaron Judge.
03:16Chops, the first one that he sees down the ball, and we'll go the short way to finish up this
03:21inning.
03:21We got to see it, and Skeen's made it a short visit.
03:24Libby loves it, and America probably starting to love this guy right here.
03:27Tarek Skubal comes on to pitch.
03:302-41 ERA for the Detroit Tigers.
03:33Leads qualifiers in the American League.
03:35It's under this one, and in right center field, Judge and Soto come together.
03:39It is Soto, and it's a one-two-three second for Skubal.
03:42Now, the Phillies, best record in baseball.
03:45They've got eight of them here at the All-Star Game.
03:48We've got three of them with us.
03:50We're trying to lock in those earpieces and those microphones.
03:52Guys, now that the P.A. music has died down, can you hear us?
03:57I'm good.
03:59I'm looking around like, I think I've got it.
04:01Well, we got you guys.
04:05Cracked in the air.
04:06Alec, that's you.
04:11You all right over there?
04:13It's a high railing.
04:16So, we got eight Philly All-Stars, including three starting infielders.
04:20How much fun you guys have in, Bryce?
04:22It'd be funner if one of our starters wasn't on the beach right now.
04:29It's been a blast, man.
04:30It's been so much fun.
04:31I mean, we got such a great group of guys, man.
04:33We just have a blast together.
04:34So, it's been good.
04:34Pitch Alvarez takes ball four, headed down there towards Bryce.
04:38Bryce, I couldn't believe it's been a while since you played in one of these.
04:41Yeah, a couple years getting hurt and things like that, but really, really enjoying this one, man.
04:46I've got kids now.
04:47I'm enjoying it with them, my family, my wife, just everybody, man.
04:50It's been a lot of fun.
04:52Alec, it is your first All-Star game.
04:55How's the experience been for you?
04:56It's been a blast just being able to do it with all the guys on the team, too.
05:01Amiraz flies his ball to center field.
05:03Tasker Hernandez for the first out of the second.
05:06Trey, I hope you guys are being inclusive of Cattell Marte.
05:09He probably feels a little left out there.
05:11You know, you've got these three Phillies around you.
05:13You've got to share any inside jokes with Cattell or anything.
05:18That's a loss, but I've heard inside jokes.
05:21And I don't know if I want to be a part of that.
05:26Off the middle.
05:27Nice diving stuff by Trey.
05:29Are you kidding me?
05:30I love that.
05:32Hey, let's go!
05:34How about that belt field?
05:35That belt is brutal.
05:36It's why I don't wear these things.
05:39I need my little belt back.
05:41Well, it officially is the greatest play by a player who has worn the mic.
05:46Turner gets that and tosses it to second.
05:53This one's a little easier.
05:54It doesn't matter what kind of belt you got on, right?
05:57All right, so scoreless top of the second inning.
06:00Appreciate you guys joining us.
06:01The Yankees spent much of the first half with the best record in the American League,
06:05of course, led by Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.
06:08And both those superstars in the field right now, both of us,
06:11are both of them joining us as Profar Hooks on down the line.
06:14And fair ricochets to Soto, who will hold him to a long single.
06:21Hey, nice play, Juan.
06:28How's what I'm talking about, baby?
06:30Having a lot of fun here.
06:31Hot shot.
06:32They ricochets off Simeon to Henderson, who has no play.
06:36Everybody's safe.
06:37Aaron, what do you think about Shohei Ohtani?
06:40Man, it's incredible, you know, what he does year in and year out.
06:43And then you think about this year, where he's recovering from Tommy John surgery.
06:47And he's hitting 316, 30 homers.
06:50It's just incredible.
06:52It's a small hard way back to right field.
06:55Soto doesn't even move.
06:58Ohtani has homered in the All-Star game.
07:0028 so far in the regular season.
07:03And in his second at-bat in the All-Star game, he launches a no-doubt three-run homerun.
07:08Well, he is so strong, so tall, and has leverage with that bat in his own.
07:13I believe he gets a split in the middle of the plate and didn't miss it.
07:16And he stood there and knew right away that was gone.
07:19Everybody in the park knew it.
07:21It traveled 400 feet, came off the bat at 103.7.
07:26Actually, we got you guys' reactions.
07:28Simeon leads off the spot.
07:29I'm in the third for the American League.
07:31Logan Webb is on the pitch.
07:32I'm trying to believe that this is his All-Star debut because he has been the pillar of the Giants
07:36for a while.
07:37Shoots on the other way and may sit to open this third.
07:40Marcus Simeon, really the tone setter of their turnaround the last couple years.
07:45Chops on to first.
07:46Harper with a nice backhand stab.
07:48Runs to the bag to get the first out.
07:50That was not an easy play.
07:51He has been spectacular at first.
07:53I don't know if we'll ever see him back in the outfield.
07:56Here's the Yankees' Juan Soto.
07:58First pitch.
07:59He sends this one up the middle.
08:00It's going to get through.
08:01Into center field.
08:03It will score Simeon.
08:04It will score Quan.
08:05Soto digs for second.
08:07He's in there with a double as he takes advantage.
08:09And it's 3-2 now, National League.
08:12Well, it just seems like Juan Soto is made for New York, hasn't it?
08:16No, he's relishing the role.
08:18Now, the Cleveland Guardians' David Fry is now going to pinch it for Jordan Alvarez.
08:23Fry's going to base it to left field.
08:25Here comes Soto.
08:27Profar's throw is close but not in time.
08:31And the game is tied at 3.
08:33David Fry off of the bench to drive home Juan Soto.
08:35And a rarity, really, in an All-Star game to see one team score 3
08:39and the next team come right back and score 3.
08:42Garrett Crochet.
08:43Two tough, hard-throwing left-handers.
08:46He had to face in the All-Star game.
08:47And this guy can run it up there.
08:50As Tasker Hernandez goes down in a high fastball.
08:53And in the eyes of all the teams that are looking to think about acquiring at the deadline,
08:57Garrett Crochet, another one in the plus column with a punch-out.
09:01Shota Imanaga, the Chicago Cubs.
09:03This guy's made quite a first impression.
09:05Natalie Rutschman, he is called out on the swing.
09:08And he looks down there at Bruce Dreckman, and he's like,
09:11Really?
09:11We're in an All-Star game.
09:12Yeah, it's like, let us play.
09:13Let us play, man.
09:14Mason Miller, though, hardest throw in the big leagues, averages 1-0-1.
09:18Yeah, he's got a great fastball and change-up combination
09:21and the highest swing-and-miss percentage of anybody in Major League Baseball.
09:25You're getting a little extra charged up here facing Otani.
09:29And strikes him out.
09:30Boy, you got 1-0-2 with the fastball, and then you break that off.
09:33Good luck.
09:34It's just an easy velocity and easy spin that he has on his secondary pitches.
09:40Trey Turner bats now.
09:41Miller's first pitch misses down, and then he starts him off with a fastball that I had at
09:48103.6 miles an hour.
09:50Is that right?
09:51That's what it said.
09:53Turner, this would be another great interview of these guys that faced Miller and be like,
09:57So what did you think?
09:58What did you see?
09:59I didn't see anything.
10:01I actually didn't.
10:02I felt it, though.
10:02I did feel it.
10:032-1 on the way from Miller.
10:05A hundred and two-point-three.
10:08Swing-and-a-miss from Trey Turner.
10:10But he's also throwing it on the corners.
10:11Yes.
10:12That's what's really amazing about it.
10:14Here it comes.
10:15It is.
10:16He's sliding to the corner to get him looking.
10:18Mason Miller with a 1-2-3 inning against the top of the National League lineup in his All-Star
10:23debut.
10:23Well, the crowd, you can hear it in the background, because another one of their players, Corey Seager, has stepped
10:29in.
10:29Of course, went in to play shortstop for Gunnar Henderson.
10:32This is hit hard.
10:33Right center field.
10:34Hernandez going back.
10:36Corey Seager just misses it.
10:39Wow!
10:40Gave it a ride to the 4-10 sign in right center field, and it dies in the glove of
10:44Teoscar Hernandez.
10:45That one off the bat looks scary for a pitcher, and you see Green looking up, hoping that he sees
10:52the front jersey of Hernandez, and not the back of his jersey.
10:57Anthony Santander in his All-Star debut, rips a base hit into right field.
11:02And Anthony Santander gets a little two-lock single on a ground ball past Harper and into right field.
11:08Duran, who went into play center field for Aaron Judge.
11:11The Red Sox athletic center fielder now.
11:13Here's a high fly ball off to the bat, and Jaron Duran, that one will leave the yard, and give
11:19the American lead its first lead of the night.
11:23Boy, this dream season for Jaron Duran continues here with a home run in the All-Star game.
11:30He's a man that has power and speed, a lot of speed.
11:33The Boston Red Sox got really athletic with their lineup.
11:37It's why they're succeeding, and he's going to be a huge part of the success in the second half.
11:42When he gets on base, look out.
11:44Tonight at Globe Life Field, and in unison with fans and supporters watching at home,
11:49we deliver a powerful message as we join our partners.
11:53Stand up to cancer and MasterCard in reaffirming a commitment to the fight against cancer.
11:58Major League Baseball, together with our fans, players, coaches, and umpires,
12:03are united in our determination to defeat this disease for our friends, our families, and our communities.
12:10We all stand together.
12:12One of the best hitters of this generation.
12:14A model of consistency, model of reliability.
12:18Bounces this one to first.
12:19Josh Naylor goes down to second for one.
12:21Whips this one over to first.
12:23But off of the bag was Naylor.
12:26Hey, we get a replay review in the All-Star game.
12:29So what's your call?
12:30Out.
12:31Out.
12:32After it knew the call on the field is overturned.
12:35The runner is out.
12:36All right.
12:38But it pushes foot to the bag, and it's a double play.
12:41Front of the late innings we go.
12:43On to pitch, Seth Lugo.
12:45The Kansas City Royals having an excellent season,
12:47and he's on to face the eye-popping talent.
12:49The All-Star debut of Ellie De La Cruz.
12:53He shoots one into center field.
12:55That will get down, and we get to see De La Cruz on the bases.
12:58He throws on the brakes.
13:00As Jackson Merrill fires, or as Jared Rand fires that ball back in.
13:05And he's got the Reds fans fired up.
13:07He's got baseball fans fired up with him on base.
13:10He lines the ball the other way.
13:12That hangs up for Riley Green to make a nice playoff.
13:14Locking in.
13:16Sliding on the turf.
13:18Here's Brian Reynolds, who's an All-Star for the second time.
13:21Yeah, and he's got an opposite field base hit.
13:23Reynolds doesn't wait around.
13:24None of these hitters are.
13:25Very aggressive against Lugo.
13:27De La Cruz at second.
13:28Reynolds at first.
13:29The tying run.
13:30The 1-2 pitch.
13:32Got him with a high fastball.
13:33Good fastball up.
13:34A lot of breaking balls.
13:35A lot of balls that he spins, but he gets the fastball above the barrel.
13:38And this guy at the plate has single-handedly kept the Braves offense afloat.
13:43What a year he's had already in the first half.
13:46He's been thrilled watching him have the season he's had.
13:48Deep in the hole, Bobby Wood Jr. shows off on Cannon to finish off the top of the seventh.
13:54Middle of the seventh of this 2024 All-Star Game.
13:57It's the American League Five, the National League Three.
14:00Oh, my God, right here.
14:02Man, you got me jumping over there.
14:04Socks!
14:05It's not Apple Socks!
14:06That's what I tell the guy.
14:07How you feeling?
14:08Feel good.
14:09Having fun?
14:09I'm having a lot of fun.
14:10Hey, you know what?
14:11I was talking to the Yankee guys over there on the other side, and when you went to the moon,
14:16I started screaming, it's not Apple Socks!
14:19It's my boy!
14:21Thank you, man.
14:21I appreciate it.
14:22Hey, good seeing you.
14:23Keep having fun, man.
14:24Keep having fun, kid.
14:25He's in a big hand for this guy, Kirby Yates, in his first season in Texas.
14:28He's been dynamite.
14:30Down quickly, though, as he strikes him out with that career-changing splitter it is.
14:35One-two from Yates.
14:37Back-to-back Ks for Kirby Yates.
14:43Chops this one down to third.
14:45Paredes finishes off a one-two-three-eight for Kirby Yates.
14:49These Texas fans have seen that a bunch this season.
14:51They see it in the All-Star game tonight.
14:53You were talking about it earlier, John.
14:55One of the biggest reasons the Guardians are having the season they're having,
14:58you get it to the ninth inning, done deal with Emmanuel Klasse.
15:02Throws gas, spins it, hard to hit.
15:05He struck him out.
15:06Ninety-three-mile-per-hour slider.
15:08One gone in the ninth.
15:09Well, he also realized, like, just how hard it is to come in off the bend.
15:13It's a tall order to try to pinch hit, basically, off this guy.
15:16Chopper to second.
15:17Jordan Westberg to the outfield grass.
15:19Two gone in the ninth inning.
15:21Merrill bounces it gently in front of the plate and is picked up fair.
15:26Tossed to first late and a mistake there by Klasse.
15:30Ball is rolling foul.
15:31Merrill's aboard and the National League has hope.
15:33Tying run to the plate.
15:35Two gone in the ninth inning.
15:37Klasse's 0-2 is fouled into the glove for strike three.
15:40Good morning, good afternoon, and good night to the National League.
15:44The ALs back on top with a tenth win in the last 11 All-Star games.
15:49We saw a little bit of everything.
15:51We saw power.
15:52We saw power arms.
15:53It looked really good for the National League after Shohei Otani hit the three-run homer,
15:58but then quickly the American League tied it right out from the bottom of the inning
16:01and never looked back.
16:05This guy was a seven-time All-Star, former All-Star game MVP.
16:09Let's hear from Michael Young, ladies and gentlemen.
16:15And Michael is here, as Joe mentioned, to present the Ted Williams MVP, presented by Chevrolet.
16:21Michael, you want to do the honors?
16:22It's Jaron Duran from the Red Sox.
16:30What are you going to do with that?
16:31I mean, that's going to look nice in the office, I think, Jaron.
16:34Yeah, I'll probably end up giving it to my dad, and he'll put it in a nice place for me
16:37to hold for the season.
16:39What did this mean for you this whole weekend, just to get to be here as an All-Star for
16:43the first time?
16:44It's been your breakout year, and then to do that and hit the game-winning home run tonight.
16:49Honestly, I can't really put it into words right now.
16:50I'm kind of overwhelmed with the emotions, but I'm just very thankful to be here,
16:55and to represent the Red Sox is a big honor.
16:58Take us into the mindset of the at-bat, right?
17:00You know you get an at-bat, maybe two in an All-Star game.
17:03What's your approach going to the plate, and when you connected, what are you thinking watching it go?
17:08I mean, I know he throws really hard, so I was like,
17:11all right, I'm hoping he throws me a fastball first pitch so I can see how hard it is.
17:14And then he just gave me a pitch to put a good swing on it.
17:18And that's probably the first pitch I've ever pimped in my life,
17:20and I was just trying to soak it all in, but it was a surreal moment.
17:25You got the game-winning home run in an All-Star game.
17:27When you sit down on the plane to go home, what will you take in from this whole experience?
17:33Probably hanging out with those guys in the clubhouse, man.
17:35There's so many good guys in that clubhouse.
17:37I mean, there's guys that are supposed to be our rivals in our division,
17:39but they're such awesome guys, it's going to be hard to play against them coming up
17:44because they're such good guys, and it's going to be super fun.
