00:00And right now, we are two minutes away from the end of the trading day.
00:03Romain Bostic here with Katie Greifeld, taking you through to that closing bell.
00:06It's a global simulcast.
00:08Carol Masser and Tim Senevic join us now.
00:10Welcome to our audiences across all of our Bloomberg platforms, television, radio,
00:14our partnership with YouTube.
00:15One a day where the S&P, the NASDAQ, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index
00:19are on pace for yet another record high.
00:22The Russell 2000, only a smidge behind them.
00:24Man, you stole my headline.
00:26I tried.
00:26What was the headline, Carol?
00:27Was it the socks?
00:28No, the three were higher.
00:30I mean, I'm obsessed with the socks right now.
00:32Up for an 18 straight day.
00:33I think we're up about 50%, 5-0, folks, in that time frame.
00:38Well, look at just how these companies in the socks are doing.
00:41Intel's up more than 23%.
00:43Arm Holdings up, Katie, 14, almost 15%.
00:47Rambis up more than 14%.
00:50AMD up 14%.
00:52Qualcomm up more than 11%.
00:55It's pretty remarkable.
00:56It is pretty remarkable.
00:58We keep remarking on it, and it's certainly benefiting the S&P 500 as well.
01:03I will note that this is the fourth straight week of gains for the S&P 500.
01:08It has gained every single week in April.
01:11Just amazing when you think about what we saw in March, and that was four straight weeks
01:15of losses.
01:16A market really trying to look past some of the issues going on in the Middle East, and
01:19part of that is, obviously, because what we saw with some of these earnings this week,
01:23particularly with Intel, particularly with Texas Instruments.
01:25Don't forget, next week, or a huge week, 181 S&P companies set to report, and it includes
01:30pretty much all of the big names at the top of the weightings, your Apples, your Microsofts,
01:34your Amazons, and Alphabets.
01:36We get the closing bells here in New York, and it does look like it is going to be a
01:40record day for the Benchmark Index.
01:42The S&P 500 right now trading around 7,164 and change.
01:46It takes a while for these numbers to settle, but no matter how they settle, it's going
01:49to be up about eight-tenths of a percent on the day to yet another record high.
01:53The NASDAQ Composite and NASDAQ 100, adding about 1.6% on the composite, 1.9% on the NASDAQ
02:00100.
02:00That's good enough for a record high.
02:02The Dow Jones Industrial Average sitting this one out in the red on the day by about two-tenths
02:07of a percent.
02:08So are the Dow Transports and the S&P Equal Weight Index.
02:11The Russell 2000, though, it is going to finish in the green, up about 12 points or four-tenths
02:15of a percent, but just about, looks like about six or seven points shy of a record high.
02:20All right, back to the S&P 500 we go.
02:22We also remain, of course, breaking down all of those major averages.
02:25What's interesting is, yep, a record, but folks, only 177 names gaining ground in today's
02:31session in the S&P 500.
02:33Katie had 324 names losing ground today, two unchanged.
02:36Yeah, you saw a similar breadth picture when you take a look at the sector level as well,
02:40when you take a look at that circle.
02:42Five sectors finished in the green, six in the red.
02:45In terms of what did gain today, information technology higher by about two-and-a-half percent
02:50as a sector, consumer discretionary also popping about one-point-four percent.
02:54Those are your big winners on the day.
02:56In terms of what didn't perform, health care down about one-point-four percent.
03:00We know that Eli Lilly has had a rough go of things lately.
03:04Industrial is also down about nine-tenths of a percent, Carol.
03:06All right, guys, let's go to some of the individual gainers.
03:09No surprise, I'm going to go to the semiconductor area, including, of course, Intel just soaring
03:14on its blockbuster report.
03:16It is the number one gainer in the S&P 500, the NASDAQ 100, up 23 percent in today's session.
03:22But not alone.
03:24You had Arm, AMD, Qualcomm, all of these names higher in today's session, up almost 15 percent.
03:31Can I just give you the stat there?
03:33Best day since October 29th, 1987.
03:36I don't know if you're old enough, Carol, if you remember what happened in October 1987.
03:40I remember what happened that day.
03:43What happens?
03:43That was Black Monday.
03:44It was Black Monday.
03:46You were talking about the Dow back then.
03:48The Dow, I know.
03:49And look where that got them.
03:51Yeah, look at it now.
03:52All right, so thank you for that perspective.
03:53Carol wants to continue talking.
03:54Yeah, I would like to.
03:55All right, so anyway, socks up for an 18th straight day.
03:58We're up nearly or around 50 percent in that time frame.
04:02Take a look, folks.
04:03I know for those who are listening on radio, but it is a straight shot up in the last 18
04:08days.
04:09So quite some outperformance.
04:10We know about it.
04:11We were talking with Steve Soschnick earlier.
04:13Yeah.
04:13You know, 18 straight days.
04:14Longest win streak for that index since it was formed back in 1994.
04:18He said that the longest streak prior to this was like nine days.
04:21So basically doubled that daily win streak.
04:24Yeah, I mean, it's really kind of crazy.
04:26And that is pretty significant if you look at that stat.
04:28I should also point out AMD was upgraded to buy from neutral.
04:30Price target raised $3.75 from $2.20 at DA Davison.
04:36Yeah, I'm just going to ignore him.
04:38Anyway, we're going to move on.
04:39Let's go on over to Alphabet.
04:41One more name for you.
04:42Google is going to invest $10 billion in Anthropic with another $30 billion potentially to follow.
04:47A $350 billion valuation now.
04:51So we just continue.
04:52Alphabet shares, you can see, up about one and a half percent.
04:55And I just want to mention, honorable men, don't get mad at me, Finley,
04:58but Spirit Aviation was up 46 percent.
05:01Again, it's like a dollar something, a share about, again, some talk about the government maybe taking a position.
05:07And then iHeart holding merger talks was serious.
05:10iHeart, it was stopped because of volatility and trading, but when it stopped, it was up about 14 percent.
05:14So I'm just going to throw those in.
05:15If the U.S. government buys Spirit, do we get a discount flying it?
05:21That's a great question.
05:22Why would we?
05:23Or do we get to bring a bag without paying?
05:26I thought we were going to talk about the U.S. government buying iHeart.
05:29And I thought that was going to be interesting.
05:31But who knows?
05:33Hey, we got some decliners, even though today was such a risk on day.
05:36I want to start with the worst performer in the S&P 500.
05:38Charter communications fell by more than 25 percent today.
05:42This, after the company reported underwhelming quarterly results, it lost 117,000 residential customers at its Spectrum Internet brand.
05:50Once again, the worst performer, losing a quarter of its market cap just in today's trading session.
05:57That's the biggest drop ever.
05:58That's a big one?
05:59Yeah, since 2009.
06:00Wow.
06:01Okay, let's move on to HCA Healthcare.
06:04This company also fell today by more than 8.7 percent.
06:098.8 percent was the decline.
06:10It opted against raising its yearly profit and sales guidance despite first quarter profit beating analysts' views.
06:16Remember, it's a hospital operator.
06:18So first quarter admissions were lower than expected due to a decline in people going to the ER or being
06:24admitted with respiratory illness.
06:27HCA holdings falling 8.8 percent.
06:29And finally, Avis Budget Group, ticker CAR.
06:32I love this story.
06:33Down 11 percent today.
06:35Wow.
06:35So it's wiped out nearly all of its 600 percent surge over the previous month in just two days, Romain.
06:42Yeah.
06:42No clear cause except, you know.
06:44Yeah.
06:45The fact that it went up.
06:46Memes, I guess.
06:47A classic short squeeze.
06:48A three-day 71 percent drop just in the past three sessions.
06:51So.
06:51And there's a great story in the Bloomberg Terminal that provides a lot of context for the run-up in
06:55the shares.
06:55Well, remember, it went back to this idea of a government shutdown.
06:58Yeah.
06:59And people saying, wait a second, if the government shut down and you can't get through airport security, maybe everybody
07:05will drive everywhere instead.
07:07Right.
07:07And that was sort of the beginning of this run.
07:09Huh.
07:09So.
07:10But that's a fundamental reason.
07:12Yeah.
07:12Yeah.
07:12I think there was a little bit more than fundamentals.
07:14I encourage everyone to read that story on the Bloomberg Terminal.
07:16A quick check of yields here.
07:17We did see all yields dropped significantly, and that did help to aid the market rally down about six basis
07:22points on the shorter end of the curve, longer end of the curve.
07:25The moves were a little bit less dramatic here.
07:27But, of course, that is the setup.
07:28Don't forget, next week, next Wednesday, we do get a Fed decision day.
07:31No expectation for rates to move.
07:33But, of course, a lot of speculation about what the debate will be about where we go next.
07:38All right.
07:38Well, I know where we're going to go right next.
07:40Thank you so much, Romain.
07:41I really appreciate it.
07:42What's up with you today, Romain?
07:44Did you hear this story, Carol, about the pandas that apparently are being flown back?
07:49Did you hear that one?
07:50Oh, there it is.
07:51Would someone kill his mic?
07:53So, anyway, listen, we're thinking about what's going to happen with the war between the U.S. and Iran this
07:59weekend, as it looks like there's some movement forward in terms of peace talks.
08:01But I wonder if geopolitically our next focus is those talks between President Trump and President Xi, which are happening
08:07or expected to happen in mid-May.
08:09Ahead of that, China is sending two pandas to the U.S., adding to perhaps some signs of stabilizing ties
08:16between the two nations before that meeting.
08:18Didn't they just take pandas from us or something?
08:19It's been back and forth.
08:20Panda diplomacy is a real thing.
08:21So, are these the same pandas or?
08:24I think these are new ones.
08:25These are new ones.
08:25This is Zoo Atlanta.
08:26Because you know they have some issues procreating here.
08:28Zoo Atlanta.
08:29Well, you've got to keep track of the names.
08:30Zoo Atlanta says a male panda named Ping Ping and a female named Fushuong are part of an agreement with
08:36the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
08:38It replaces the original one.
08:40That expired back in 2024.
08:41The agreement, not the pandas.
08:43Yes, the agreement.
08:45I remember being in D.C. when the pandas came to the National Zoo there.
08:48It was like a frenzy.
08:49I mean, you would have thought, like, BTS or somebody was in town.
08:52They're fine.
08:53They're fine.
08:53I'm not huge on pandas.
08:54They just kind of roll around.
08:55They eat their bamboo.
08:56Yeah, they don't really do much.
08:57They ignore their lovers.
08:58They're pretty ferocious, though.
08:59They're probably cute, but they're pretty fierce.
09:00They're definitely not procreating.
09:01We know that for sure.
09:03They take a lot of coaxing.
09:04Let's talk a little bit about another story that we were keeping an eye on.
09:08This is called the Tin Can.
09:10Apparently, it's the hottest phone for kids right now.
09:14It's a $100 landline.
09:16I'm sorry, what?
09:18A $100 landline?
09:19Well, it's a landline-inspired device.
09:22Hundreds of thousands have been sold, apparently, mostly thanks to word of mouth.
09:26And it's to try to get kids off smartphones is my understanding.
09:30Did Charter Communications come up with this or something?
09:32What's happening?
09:33You know, there is a big line.
09:34There's a big line for these.
09:35I think my brother sent a message to our family chain.
09:38And he's like, his kids have a birthday coming up in a few months.
09:42And he's, like, getting on the wait list for these.
09:44Wow.
09:44Yeah.
09:45Imagine when they find out what we actually talked on, you know, when we were kids.
09:48Yeah.
09:48And we talked on the phone.
09:49I know.
09:50I actually, you, well, Carol and I, you know, back in the old black and white days, we used
09:55to have, you know, real tin cans with the string on us.
09:57Wow, the dial.
09:57It was quite a thing.
09:58We actually had a party line.
09:58It was hard to hear.
09:59We had neighbors up on the hill that we started in line with.
10:01It was kind of, kind of, weird.
10:02You know, Carol and I used to run around back in the 30s.
10:04We were like little rascals.
10:06We were like this.
10:07It's like, and how?
10:08We were like this.
