00:18An all-new Closer Look.
00:25And now, Seth Meyers.
00:28Good evening, everybody. I'm Seth Meyers.
00:30This is Late Night. We hope you're doing well.
00:32And now, if you don't mind, we're going to get to the news.
00:34President Trump reposted a 2004 New York Times article yesterday
00:39on Truth Social about the high ratings
00:41for The Apprentice Season 1 finale.
00:44Okay, I get that he's a very old man,
00:47but why is his life flashing before my eyes?
00:53That's right.
00:54President Trump reposted a 2004 New York Times article
00:57on Truth Social about high ratings
00:59for his reality TV series, The Apprentice.
01:01Well, yeah, it was 2004.
01:02Back then, even this got a second season.
01:07President Trump was set to attend a private dinner today
01:09at the U.S. Institute of Peace,
01:11which he recently renamed after himself.
01:13That's right.
01:14He renamed dinner after himself.
01:17Please join me tonight for a very special Trump meal.
01:22President Trump was set to attend a private dinner
01:24at the U.S. Institute of Peace,
01:26which he recently renamed
01:27the Donald J. Trump United States Institute of Peace.
01:30All right, when is he going to stop naming stuff after himself?
01:33It never works out.
01:38Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche
01:41signed an order today to reclassify marijuana
01:44and said the Justice Department is, quote,
01:45delivering on President Trump's promise
01:47to improve American health care.
01:49Yes, it's great news if your doctor is concerned
01:52that you're not getting enough cheese dust.
01:56Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
01:59pushed back this week against claims
02:01that President Trump has sidelined him
02:02because he thinks Kennedy is making him look bad.
02:05Yeah, if anything, he makes Trump look good.
02:10He looks like a catcher's mitt wished to be a real boy.
02:17According to a new study, salmon exposed to cocaine
02:20in the water can swim longer distances.
02:23In fact, they'll just keep going until they find an ATM.
02:28Oh, okay, I'll call the guy back.
02:32The Trump administration has reportedly
02:33in advance talks to provide a rescue package
02:36for Spirit Airlines to help the carrier avoid liquidation
02:39because if Spirit Airlines goes out of business,
02:42I lose, like, half my monologue.
02:47A toad rescue group in England has reported
02:50that this was the best year for mating toads since 2012.
02:54But, uh, don't tell that to Arnold.
03:10I don't know how I thought our toad joke would go.
03:16Looking at it now, I realize there's a pretty low ceiling on it.
03:20I didn't... You know what?
03:21I will say I didn't expect you guys
03:22to have sympathy for Arnold.
03:26That's really... That was the one reaction
03:28I wasn't ready for.
03:30I thought you might like the joke,
03:31you might not like the joke.
03:32I didn't think all of you, all of you collectively,
03:35would be like, no, Arnold!
03:38You'll meet someone one day, Arnold.
03:43And finally, an upstate New York bakery
03:45has gained attention online
03:47after making a sword-shaped loaf of bread
03:50to celebrate the Buffalo Sabres hockey team.
03:52Oh, that's what that is?
03:59Thank God.
04:00I thought we were going to have to blur that for broadcast.
04:04Oh, and that makes it look even worse.
04:07Unblurred. Now it really looks...
04:08All right, never mind.
04:09That was a monologue, everybody.
04:10Here we go.
04:13Got a fantastic show for you tonight.
04:15She's a tremendous actress
04:17you know from films such as Monster,
04:19Atomic Blonde, and Mad Max Fury Road
04:21as she stars in and produces Apex,
04:24which premieres on Netflix this Friday, April 24th.
04:28Charlize Theron is back on the show, everybody.
04:31We're going to hit the next one now.
04:32MacGruber, The Lonely Island.
04:35The Lonely Island of Seth Meyers podcast.
04:37His new movie, Over Your Dead Body,
04:39is in theaters Friday.
04:40My very good friend, Yorma Tacconi,
04:42is on the show, you guys.
04:45So, hey, if you live nearabouts Denver, Colorado,
04:50or Albuquerque, New Mexico,
04:51I will be doing a stand-up next month
04:53over there for tickets and more.
04:55Head over to SethMeyers.com, everybody, for that.
04:59Moving on, you guys.
05:00Republicans are fuming over Donald Trump's
05:02failed gerrymandering strategy,
05:04which could cost them their jobs in November.
05:06Meanwhile, the Trump family is facing backlash
05:08after cashing in on government contracts.
05:10For more on this, it's time for A Closer Look.
05:17There's a lot going on right now.
05:19Fuel supply shortages, cabinet turmoil,
05:21war spiraling out of control.
05:23But we have to start off with the biggest news of the day.
05:25After 12 straight losses,
05:26the New York Mets won a baseball game, baby.
05:30As you may know, as you may have heard,
05:33there's been some concern here at Late Night
05:35that we might have been responsible
05:36for the Mets' losing streak,
05:37because Mr. and Mrs. Mets came to visit our set
05:40on opening day.
05:41And they gave cue card Wally a Mets jersey,
05:44even though Wally is a Yankees fan.
05:46So the rest of my crew decided
05:47that if the Mets lost one more game,
05:49the only way to break the curse
05:50would be to burn Wally's Mets jersey
05:54with Wally inside it.
05:57But now the Mets have won,
05:58which means Wally survived.
05:59How does it feel, Wally?
06:00Yeah, not great, Seth.
06:01My friends were going to burn me on fire.
06:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, but they didn't,
06:06so what are you complaining about?
06:07They soaked it in gasoline.
06:09The fumes are giving me a headache.
06:10Yeah, I know, but Wally, as we've said before,
06:12you are a Yankees fan, so you...
06:14I deserve it.
06:15That's right.
06:18By the way, there's been a lot of speculation
06:20about who cursed the Mets.
06:21I mean, was it us?
06:22Was it New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani?
06:24But we here at Late Night have another theory.
06:26In 2006, the Mets were eliminated
06:28from the playoffs by the Cardinals
06:30when their star player, Carlos Beltran,
06:33struck out looking.
06:33It's one of the Mets fans' most painful memories.
06:35It started a decade-long spiral for the team.
06:37Now, I'm going to show you a picture
06:39of that horrible moment.
06:41See if you spot any familiar faces.
06:44Oh, my God!
06:48Oh, my God!
06:54He is like Forrest Gump, but only for bad stuff.
07:00My favorite part of that picture
07:01is how Trump's not even wearing any Mets stuff.
07:04Not wearing a raincoat.
07:06He's just standing there in a suit at a baseball game,
07:09like a business angel of death.
07:12It's like a horror movie where some teenagers
07:14steal cufflinks off a dead body,
07:16and then they see this dude everywhere they go.
07:19I'm telling you, Jaden, he was at the party.
07:24Of course, it would make sense
07:25that Trump would curse a baseball team
07:26because he curses everything he's involved in.
07:28The only person who ever benefited
07:29from Donald Trump's success is Donald Trump.
07:32Everything else he touches turned to .
07:34I mean, look what happened
07:35when Trump started a gerrymandering war with Democrats.
07:37President Trump is all in on a Texas Republican plan
07:41to redistrict the state.
07:43The president said he thinks the redrawing districts
07:46at this time could net five extra GOP seats,
07:51which could be enough to hold the House majority
07:54in the midterms.
07:56I think we'll get five,
07:57and there could be some other states.
07:59We're going to get another three or four or five in addition.
08:02Texas would be the biggest one, and that'll be five.
08:05We have to gerrymander to the tilt.
08:09Why?
08:09Because the Democratic Party cannot be trusted
08:12to be the opposition party anymore.
08:15They have to have a permanent minority.
08:18Yeah, Democrats can't be trusted anymore.
08:20They jacked up gas prices,
08:21started a reckless war with Iran,
08:23pissed off Canada, threatened to invade Greenland,
08:25and passed a law where you can only dance with your arms.
08:30Trump looks like one of those Chinese marathon-running robots
08:33if only the top half worked.
08:39So that was Fox host Jesse Waters last year,
08:41saying Republicans should rig congressional maps
08:43to make it impossible for Democrats to win.
08:45The Democrats responded with their own gerrymanders,
08:47like in Virginia,
08:48where there was a vote on Tuesday
08:49to redraw the lines in favor of Democrats.
08:52Let's tune in to see who won that battle.
08:55Fox News alert.
08:56According to the AP,
08:57voters in Virginia have approved Democrats' plan
09:00to gerrymander congressional districts 50 to 49.
09:04This could flip four House seats
09:06from Republican control to Democrats.
09:08First of all, I just want to say to the Fox executive
09:11who decided Jesse Waters should be the one
09:12who was on air to deliver that news.
09:14I mean, bravo.
09:15The only way those two clips could have been any better
09:17is if the first chyron said around,
09:19and the second one said finding out.
09:21And now, like clockwork,
09:24Republicans are angry at Trump
09:26for starting a dumb gerrymandering war
09:28that they're now losing.
09:29One Republican member of Congress told Axios,
09:31I think it is a mistake in hindsight.
09:34They thought they could just do Texas
09:35and nobody else is going to respond.
09:37We started a war, and you've got to play chess.
09:40Think three or four moves ahead.
09:42And that's the problem.
09:43You're talking about Donald Trump.
09:44The man can't play chess.
09:45He's always playing Hungry, Hungry Hippos.
09:49And you just know that when Trump plays,
09:50he tips the boards so the marbles go toward his hippo.
09:53Although this is pretty cool.
09:54There's a new special edition
09:55where the hippos are replaced by Trump
09:57and the marbles are replaced by hamburgers.
10:04That was our entire graphics budget for the year.
10:07All 25 bucks went right...
10:12So Republicans are now on the verge of losing the House
10:15because of Trump's inability to think ahead.
10:17But if you're a Republican member of Congress
10:19who's about to lose your job, don't worry.
10:21The Trump family is still making bank.
10:24The use of humanoid robots on the battlefield
10:27as they play an expanded role in America's national security.
10:30Foundation Future Industries, a robotic startup,
10:34aims to develop these autonomous humanoid robots.
10:37The company just secured a $24 million contract
10:40with the Pentagon for its phantom robot
10:42to begin tests with the Marine Corps
10:44and help troops breach enemy sites more safely.
10:47Joining us now is Foundation Future Industries'
10:49founder and CEO, Sankat Patak,
10:51and the company's chief strategy advisor,
10:54Eric Trump, President Trump's son.
10:56Congratulations to you both.
10:58Thank you so much for being here.
10:59Now, for anyone surprised that Eric Trump's title
11:02is chief strategy advisor, I can explain.
11:05It was too hard to fit dip who just happens to be
11:07the president's son on a business card.
11:09Also, she for real said congratulations to you both.
11:13Where were Hunter Biden's congratulations
11:15when he sold one of his paintings?
11:18At least when Hunter sold a painting,
11:20it wasn't to the government.
11:21You didn't see it hanging behind Joe Biden
11:24on the wall of the Oval Office.
11:25Yeah, my son painted like Hunter painted that one.
11:30It's a weird floaty tree.
11:34Yeah, I like it.
11:35I'm not kidding around.
11:38Only $24 million.
11:39That's a steal.
11:42Try, try, yeah.
11:45Try to get a weird floaty tree for...
11:48...for less than $24 million.
11:51...and one more thing.
11:52This company that just got a massive Pentagon contract,
11:55it makes humanoid robots, and it's run by Trump.
11:59I just hope our enemies don't discover
12:00the robot's fatal flaw.
12:02They can only move their arms.
12:05Ooh, looks like we had a little graphics money left over.
12:10So the president's family is dining at the taxpayer trough.
12:13Meanwhile, the rest of us are getting hit
12:15with price hikes and supply shortages
12:17as a result of Trump's war with Iran.
12:20Global markets reacting to the latest instability
12:22in the Strait of Hormuz.
12:24Gas prices now averaging $4 a gallon,
12:27up more than a dollar since the war began.
12:29It's not just oil and gas.
12:31It's also fertilizer and urea and nitrogen and helium
12:33and all these critical components
12:35that go into everything that you and I have in our homes
12:37and are about to buy at the grocery store.
12:39Jet fuel prices have nearly doubled
12:41and production largely halted in the Gulf.
12:43Recovery could take months.
12:45Airlines worldwide are feeling the impact.
12:48More than a dozen major carriers,
12:50including Delta and United, have already cut flights.
12:53The struggling discount carrier Spirit Airlines
12:55could get a $500 million bailout
12:58from the Trump administration.
12:59The company has already filed for bankruptcy twice
13:01and now faces new challenges,
13:03like higher jet fuel costs due to the Iran war.
13:06Man, I knew Donald Trump was on tilt,
13:08but I didn't think he'd buy Spirit Airlines.
13:11Imagine if things were going bad already,
13:13and your spouse came home and told you that.
13:15Honey, I know you've been having some money troubles,
13:17but I think I figured a way out of it.
13:18Are you familiar with Spirit Airlines?
13:21Honey, put the knife down.
13:24So now we might spend half a billion dollars
13:26to bail out an airline because of a war we started.
13:29And even Republicans are mad.
13:30Ted Cruz called the Spirit Airlines bailout
13:32an absolutely terrible idea.
13:34Remember, this is Ted Cruz.
13:35Ted Cruz has Donald Trump's back all the time,
13:37but even he can't go with him on this.
13:39You know, he's like,
13:39Mr. President, you need to focus on bringing prices down.
13:42And Trump's like,
13:43I have a plan.
13:44The federal government is going to take over TJ Maxx.
13:47No, Mr. President.
13:49Ted, it's the max for the minimum, Ted.
13:53The max for the minimum, the minimum price.
13:56Trump knows how much of a mess this is.
13:57He's so desperate to wriggle his way out of it
13:59that now he's threatening to shoot at Iranian ships
14:02in the Strait of Hormuz
14:03and generally just posting like a maniac.
14:05He said, quote,
14:06I've ordered the United States Navy
14:08to shoot and kill any boat,
14:10small boats, though they may be,
14:12their naval ships are all 159 of them
14:15at the bottom of the sea.
14:16That is putting mines in the waters
14:18of the Strait of Hormuz.
14:19He went on to say there is to be no hesitation.
14:22And later in this post said
14:23he is ordering that activity to continue
14:26at what he called would be a tripled up level.
14:29Tripled up?
14:30Again, my man is on tilt.
14:32He sounds like a degenerate gambler
14:34who's losing at the craps table.
14:35Come on, lady luck.
14:37Seven out.
14:38Hey, let's call it a night, Donnie.
14:39No, my luck's about to change.
14:41I know it.
14:42I'm going to triple up.
14:45Snake eyes.
14:45Snake eyes.
14:46I didn't know Stephen Miller was here.
14:50The same strategic genius
14:51that started a gerrymandering war
14:53is also the one that started the Iran war.
14:55And in both cases, Trump is losing badly.
14:57But he doesn't care
14:58because while everyone else suffers,
15:00his family is cashing in,
15:02a.k.a. his two...
15:05This has been A Closer Look.
15:11Be right back with Charlie's Den.
15:19For more of Seth's Closer Looks,
15:21be sure to subscribe to Late Night on YouTube.
15:32Our first guest tonight
15:33is an Academy Award-winning actress
15:34and producer you know from films
15:36such as Monster, The Old Guard,
15:39Bombshell, Atomic Blonde,
15:40and Mad Max, Fury Road.
15:42She both produces and stars in Apex,
15:44which premieres on Netflix this Friday,
15:46April 24th.
15:47Let's take a look.
15:48Let's take a look.
15:48Oh, my God.
16:20Please welcome back to the show
16:22Charlize Theron, everybody.
16:38Hello. It's so nice to have you back.
16:41It's nice to be back.
16:42As we can tell from the clip,
16:44this is about a super chill vacation.
16:46Yes. Yes, it is.
16:48Your dream vacation.
16:49Yeah, it's a vacation gone right.
16:51And meeting new friends.
16:52Meeting new friends.
16:53Yes.
16:55Making memories.
16:56Oh, my God.
16:57It really is like, you know, I watched it
16:59and I was like, I got to camp more.
17:02I got to camp more in places
17:03where the phones don't work.
17:06Oh, my God.
17:07I hope we don't change people's ideas of camping
17:11because camping's beautiful.
17:13It is, but it is a lot.
17:15Yeah, there is a serial killer element to it.
17:17It is weird how like a place
17:19that's considered beautiful and scenic
17:21and where people go hike
17:22and can turn into where a serial killer
17:24leaves their bodies.
17:25Yeah.
17:26Well, you know, it goes to the old adage,
17:28like, serial killers can ruin anything.
17:31You know what I mean?
17:31No matter how beautiful it is.
17:33It is a good adage.
17:34They always say.
17:34That's like when they're saying, like,
17:35should you invite one?
17:36They're like, just remember.
17:38You're playing with fire.
17:39Yeah, they have a way of turning things around.
17:41Yes, really quickly.
17:42You've been doing a ton of press about this.
17:45And so I just feel like, I just want to like chill.
17:48I don't want to make you feel like
17:49you have to sell this show anymore.
17:50This movie, excuse me.
17:52It's, yes.
17:53You've earned it.
17:55Because there's so much,
17:55you have to do so much in this.
17:57I really appreciate it.
17:57You had to rock climb.
17:59Yeah, I had to like feel.
18:00There was kayaking.
18:01I had to, like my little fingers.
18:03I will say, that is the part of rock climbing.
18:06That's the part that I think is the most uncomfortable.
18:08Yeah.
18:09Yeah, I'll tell you the worst part, actually,
18:11is the chalk that you have to put on your little fingertips.
18:15I don't like that.
18:15It's like chalk down, you know,
18:17nails down a chalkboard for me.
18:19I don't like dry, chalky things on my fingers.
18:22Yeah.
18:22I don't know if I could ever really be a rock climber.
18:25Were you ever like a rock wall person at a gym before this?
18:27Okay.
18:28Never gone.
18:28Okay.
18:29But I do love it.
18:30Now I still do it.
18:31Gotcha.
18:32Yeah.
18:32There's a, you know,
18:33I don't want to give much away,
18:34but it does, it opens with a real,
18:37again, nothing in this movie
18:39is this the good version of.
18:43Which is what makes it so great.
18:45The only thing where you're like,
18:46you know what I would like to do
18:47that's in that movie is escape.
18:50That's the one activity
18:51that you really do well in this movie.
18:53It's a lot, yeah,
18:54it causes a lot of angst, this movie,
18:55but in the best way.
18:56It's really, I mean, it's so,
18:58and I mean, I want to say,
18:59obviously, like,
18:59your character's not having a lot of fun.
19:01This movie is so much fun to watch.
19:02Oh, thank you.
19:03Like, it is just, like,
19:03exact, like, the minute it starts,
19:05you, like, totally,
19:06you know exactly,
19:06you're in safe hands.
19:07Yeah.
19:08You're wonderful.
19:08Taron's so good.
19:10Taron's amazing in it.
19:10He's such a lovely person.
19:11He's such a maniac in this.
19:13It's scary.
19:14Yeah.
19:14It's really scary
19:15when you meet, like,
19:15a really nice actor,
19:16and then they do
19:17like that.
19:18Yeah.
19:19And there's also...
19:20Did I know you?
19:21Yeah.
19:22And there's not a lot
19:23of other actors in it.
19:24Like, you know,
19:25after, like, half an hour in.
19:26No, it's just us.
19:27Yeah, so you can't even
19:28look to another actor
19:29and be like,
19:30what the going on with Taron?
19:32You know exactly
19:33what the set was like.
19:34You have it down.
19:35That was it.
19:37I wanted to ask,
19:37you did a fantastic,
19:38I highly recommend,
19:40interview on The Daily.
19:42And one of them,
19:43you talked about your mom
19:44and what an incredible person
19:45she is.
19:45But there was a story
19:46I wanted to ask you about
19:47that I found very funny,
19:48which is you started as a dancer,
19:50and then, well,
19:51there were two things.
19:52One, you said you got
19:53too tall to dance.
19:55I mean, like,
19:56there are tall dancers,
19:58but it's harder.
19:58It's a lot harder.
19:59I would imagine, yeah.
20:00Because your feet,
20:00which are, like,
20:01the key thing,
20:01they're so far away.
20:04Like, the communicate,
20:06like, that to, like,
20:07this part to talk to them
20:08is like...
20:11I have no dancer training,
20:13so I don't know
20:14if that's right,
20:14but it seems,
20:16it seems like
20:17it's the reason.
20:18You have it correct.
20:19Yeah.
20:19That is what it is.
20:19There was, like,
20:20a very harsh Russian woman
20:21that told you, like,
20:22your brain is too far away.
20:25Your brain is too far
20:27from your face.
20:28It's not easy
20:29way to say this, Charlize.
20:30It's exactly what it is.
20:32That is exactly what it is.
20:33But you said that
20:33your mom was the one
20:34who recommended acting,
20:35but you did say that,
20:36like, when she said,
20:38like, you should do this
20:39because you were always
20:39so good on stage,
20:40she also, like,
20:41shared with you
20:41that she maybe didn't think
20:42you were the best dancer.
20:44My mom is,
20:45she doesn't know how to lie.
20:47Yeah.
20:47Which, by the way,
20:49I think is, like,
20:50ultimately a good quality.
20:51It's a great quality.
20:52From a parent, especially.
20:55Yeah.
20:56I can take it better now,
20:58but, yeah, when you're little,
20:59you're just like, hmm.
21:01Yeah.
21:01She was honest, though,
21:03and I don't think, you know,
21:05I think I was an okay dancer.
21:06I worked very hard.
21:08Yeah.
21:08But I wasn't very,
21:10my technique was never great.
21:12And were you, like,
21:13were you cognizant of that?
21:14Like, when you looked around
21:15a room of other dancers,
21:16were you like...
21:16I think so.
21:17I tried very, very hard.
21:19I worked very hard.
21:20Right.
21:20You never want to, like,
21:21go see, like, a dance show
21:22and then be like,
21:23you know what?
21:23They worked very hard.
21:26You can see, you know what?
21:27You can see on their faces
21:28how hard that was for them.
21:30Their brains are really
21:31connecting to their feet.
21:32And that tall girl,
21:33I felt bad, because...
21:35You can see, you can see her feet
21:37were getting messages
21:38so much later than the short girl's.
21:40Oh.
21:41Little slow to the feet.
21:43Little slow to the feet.
21:44She was just, like,
21:46she said this thing.
21:47I mean, I didn't elaborate on this,
21:50but she used to say,
21:52you know, I used to know
21:53when you were coming out on stage
21:54because I could hear you cough.
21:55Oh, my God.
21:56And it was, like, so crazy
21:57because I'm not talking.
21:58But it was, like,
21:59the nerves were kicking in
22:00and I was getting...
22:01She's like, that's when I knew
22:02you were going to come out
22:03and, like, be a character.
22:04Like, you were going to be really good
22:05because I would, like,
22:05do a little cough in the wings.
22:07Right.
22:08And that part I knew I was good at
22:10because I remember being on stage
22:11and being in the state,
22:13like, the state of, like,
22:14what athletes talk about,
22:16like, that flow state
22:17where you're not even thinking
22:19about anything.
22:19You're just in it.
22:21I love that part of it.
22:24By the way,
22:24that is the sweetest thing
22:26and a reminder of, like,
22:27how parents are just, like,
22:28tuned into their children
22:29more than anything else.
22:30If they are, yeah.
22:30When you realize, like,
22:31when your parent tells you something,
22:32like, oh, when I heard a cough
22:34and you're like, oh, my God.
22:35She remembered that.
22:36Yeah, like, a thing
22:37you might not even notice
22:38you were doing.
22:38I now notice that I do it
22:40when I make a movie, too.
22:41Like, right before we roll,
22:42I do this little thing
22:43where I cough.
22:44That must have been rough
22:45during, like, COVID.
22:49I made so many movies
22:51during COVID sets,
22:53like all of us.
22:56Did you, how many of these,
22:58how many practical stunts were doing?
23:00I mean, I think last time
23:01you were here,
23:01we were saying that
23:02you kind of always have
23:03just recently had a surgery,
23:05but I think this,
23:06you kind of got,
23:07escaped this one
23:07without a major?
23:08Nothing major,
23:09but I did have two surgeries
23:10on my right arm,
23:11on my elbow, yeah.
23:12And was it from
23:13specifically this?
23:14Yeah, I got yanked down
23:17right into, like,
23:18a nice big steel bolt
23:19in the floor.
23:20Just right into it.
23:22Yeah.
23:23So you do a lot of,
23:25you know,
23:25I will say,
23:26the other thing I liked
23:27about that interview
23:27is you did say
23:28that, like,
23:29your dance training
23:29is actually really helpful
23:30for these sort of
23:32stunt-heavy, physical films,
23:34but yet you still seem
23:35to, like, keep
23:37getting hurt.
23:41Is it, is it?
23:42Am I supposed to feel good
23:43in this interview?
23:44I just want to know
23:45what you're, like,
23:47what am I?
23:48And when it's over,
23:48I do, I would like you
23:50to fill out.
23:51We would really welcome,
23:52we would welcome
23:53a Yelp review.
23:53Okay, got it.
23:54Fantastic.
23:55Um, I, I think that,
23:59look, I will be honest,
24:00I am very accident-prone.
24:02Yeah.
24:03Very.
24:03And have been
24:04my whole life.
24:05My mom would say,
24:06if there were 500 people
24:08in a room
24:08and something were to happen,
24:10it would happen to you.
24:11And it's true.
24:12Yes.
24:12I would, I would go
24:13on, um, like, class,
24:15like, uh, like,
24:16we had, like,
24:17it was more camping.
24:18What do you call it?
24:19Summer camp
24:19when you go away
24:21in America?
24:22Yeah.
24:22Okay, so we went,
24:23like, right into the bush.
24:24Like, so deep into the bush.
24:26Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:26I sounded like
24:27Donald Trump there
24:27for a second.
24:30And I would come home
24:31always with, like,
24:32a bandage or something.
24:33I mean, terrible things.
24:34Like, terrible things.
24:36Like, falling with a glass
24:37in my hand
24:37and cutting my finger off.
24:39And it's, no,
24:40it's okay, guys.
24:41I'm used to it now.
24:42It's all right.
24:43It's all right.
24:44It makes for
24:44really good dinner conversation.
24:47But, so,
24:48I know that about myself.
24:49So, when people say,
24:51this has never happened,
24:52I go,
24:53but it will happen with me.
24:54Right.
24:55Yeah, so let's prepare for that.
24:57I'm definitely clumsy.
24:59Yeah.
24:59And one of my three kids
25:01is very, like,
25:02definitely has my clumsiness.
25:03And, like, sometimes we will,
25:04and it's, again,
25:04it's like your cough.
25:05Like, when we hear our son
25:06coming down the hallway,
25:07like, the telltale sign
25:08as he's coming
25:09is the moment where he's like,
25:10ow!
25:11And it's just like,
25:12it's just a hallway.
25:14And he came in the other night
25:15and he's like,
25:15well, I was on my way here
25:17and, surprise, surprise,
25:18I stubbed my toe.
25:19And we're like,
25:19like, even he knows
25:20it's like a joke now
25:21that he can't even
25:22walk down a hallway.
25:23Oh, yeah.
25:24Some of us just are,
25:25you know?
25:26We're just more accident prone.
25:27But I think it's also just
25:29par for the course.
25:30I just, I like,
25:31I don't mind it.
25:32Do you get,
25:33like, when there's
25:34a movie like this
25:35where, you know,
25:36obviously there's, like,
25:36the acting element of it,
25:38but then the physical challenge
25:39of the stunts and stuff,
25:40is that exhilarating,
25:41getting ready for a movie
25:42like this?
25:42Yeah, because,
25:43I mean, the reason why
25:45I love this movie so much
25:46and movies where
25:47I've done action,
25:49I love action movies
25:50when you can,
25:51when you can use the action
25:53as narrative
25:54and it doesn't feel
25:56compartmentalized.
25:56Like, the movie stops
25:57and action happens
25:58and the movie picks up again.
25:59And I like the challenge
26:01of looking at physicality
26:02and how you can tell
26:03stories through it.
26:03I really do love that.
26:05That's when my brain
26:05really connects to my feet.
26:07Yeah.
26:08We can see it,
26:09we can see it on screen.
26:10Yeah.
26:10I'm always like,
26:11I'm like, look,
26:12you can see,
26:12they're talking.
26:13You can literally see it.
26:15It's such a wonderful film.
26:17It's just so lovely
26:18to have you here again.
26:19Thanks so much, Charlize.
26:21And nobody better.
26:22Charlize Theron,
26:23Apex,
26:24premieres on Netflix
26:25this Friday,
26:26April 24th.
26:27Stick around.
26:27We'll be right back
26:28with Jordan McStone.
26:43Our next guest is an Emmy-winning,
26:45Grammy-nominated comedian,
26:47director, and writer.
26:48You know from his work
26:49on Saturday Night Live
26:50and MacGruber
26:50as one-third of
26:52The Lonely Island
26:52as one-fourth
26:54of The Lonely Island
26:55and Seth Meyers podcast.
26:56His new movie,
26:57Over Your Dead Body,
26:58is in theaters Friday.
26:59Let's take a look.
26:59What gives you the right?
27:03What gives you the right, Dan?
27:06What?
27:07Yeah!
27:16Ew.
27:21Okay.
27:23Please welcome back
27:24to the show
27:24our very good friend
27:25Yoram and Dakota!
27:43What's up, Yoram?
27:44Hi, Seth.
27:45You brought me a burrito.
27:46I did,
27:47but I'm not burrito-brained.
27:49I promise.
27:49You sometimes,
27:50we've learned from the podcast
27:51that sometimes
27:52when you have too much burrito,
27:53you get bad at answering questions.
27:55Yeah.
27:55Yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:56But you decided to risk it.
27:57Had a full one, actually.
27:59So, we'll see what happens.
28:01I saw you Tuesday this week.
28:03Yeah.
28:03For the first time
28:04since you had
28:05a very traumatic thing happen.
28:07You know,
28:08I mean, all joking aside,
28:09we were all very worried.
28:11Tell everybody
28:12what happened to you
28:12eight months ago.
28:13Okay.
28:14This is almost exactly
28:15eight months.
28:16On Friday,
28:17when Over Your Dead Body
28:18comes out, April 24th,
28:20it will be exactly
28:21eight months
28:22since I fell
28:23off a ladder
28:24about 15 feet.
28:25I would say,
28:25like, right about there.
28:27Yeah, thank you.
28:30And I shattered my pelvis.
28:33Like, it was described
28:34as exploded.
28:35Yeah.
28:35When a doctor
28:37says exploded.
28:38That's what he said.
28:39Yeah, I know.
28:39And that's, like, bad.
28:41Yeah, real bad.
28:41Because he's like,
28:42you know I tried
28:43to come up
28:43with a bunch
28:44of other words.
28:45Like, if I settled
28:47on exploded
28:48because nothing else
28:48came close.
28:49What's funny
28:50is that, like,
28:51on the other side
28:52it was just regular breaks
28:53so it was like,
28:54oh, that's nice.
28:55Yeah.
28:56When that's the good news.
28:57That was the good news.
28:58So I shattered
29:00my sacrum as well.
29:02Pelvis on this side
29:03just detached
29:04from my spine.
29:06Yeah, I'm getting
29:07a lot of good reactions
29:08here.
29:09This is the best.
29:10Yeah.
29:11I should have told them
29:11without you knowing
29:12just applaud
29:13after everything you said.
29:15Woo!
29:16All right!
29:17Exploded!
29:18Yeah, so, I mean,
29:20I really could have died.
29:21We didn't even realize
29:22how dangerous it was.
29:23Well, here's, I mean,
29:24so this gives you
29:25one sense of it.
29:26So you're hanging
29:26lights on this barn.
29:27Yes.
29:28And the reason
29:28I wanted to show
29:29this picture is because
29:31look at how nice
29:32the lights look.
29:33I mean, like,
29:34come on.
29:35That's worth it.
29:35Wouldn't you explode
29:36a pelvis for this?
29:39Now, here's the other one.
29:40You sent us this
29:41and this is when,
29:43especially because of,
29:44like, where the basketball
29:45hoop is.
29:45Like, I genuinely was like,
29:47oh, I cannot.
29:48I'm so happy you are alive.
29:50Yeah.
29:51Because that is,
29:52when you think of that fall.
29:53Okay, so this was,
29:55like, a picture that was
29:56taken in my phone
29:57and then the very next photo.
29:59So this is one photo
30:00in my phone
30:01and then the very next photo
30:02is this photo.
30:04Yeah.
30:04Yeah.
30:05Now, I will say,
30:06we, Andy, Akiva,
30:08and I remarked all the time
30:09that, not that we would
30:10wish this upon you,
30:11but among the four of us,
30:13you are the most wired
30:15for a positive recovery.
30:17You have, like,
30:18I mean, I say this
30:19as a huge compliment.
30:20Like, you immediately
30:21had sort of an optimism
30:23and, uh,
30:25I wouldn't say
30:26you were joking about it,
30:27but then you would always
30:29remind us that you were
30:30on a ton of painkillers.
30:31A ton of painkillers.
30:32And still am,
30:33to be fair.
30:34I mean, like,
30:35I was on the pod
30:36like two days after we were,
30:38yeah, yeah, yeah.
30:39We were like,
30:40well, we're obviously
30:40going to have to cancel the pod.
30:42Then, like, a day later,
30:43you're like,
30:43I think I can make it.
30:45This is Seth's impression of me,
30:47and I don't know
30:48if I like it.
30:49I'm a little bummed,
30:50because I will say,
30:50you talked like this
30:51more when we met,
30:52and I'm realizing
30:53you don't talk like it anymore.
30:55It's fine, yeah.
30:56Yeah.
30:56I think it's actually...
30:57That was, that is,
30:58that's the sound you made
30:59when you fell off the ladder.
31:00Like, oh!
31:01It's more the core of my being.
31:03It's the core of your being.
31:04Some people,
31:05you did make some purchases
31:08on painkillers.
31:08Okay.
31:09You do blame this on,
31:10because I will just say,
31:11real quick,
31:11you bought dumb
31:13even before you fell off ladders.
31:14Yeah, yeah, big time.
31:15Big time.
31:16So, but this is,
31:17you're going to blame this one
31:18on the painkillers?
31:19I, yeah.
31:21Yeah, let's go with that.
31:21Okay, so tell it real quick.
31:23Okay, so,
31:24this is also, like,
31:25two days after I have the surgery.
31:27They say that's when you buy.
31:28Yeah, oh, yeah.
31:29So I got on Craigslist,
31:30which is where you buy cars.
31:32Yeah.
31:32Uh, and, uh...
31:34You went to,
31:35there's a, it's Craigs,
31:35the portal is Craigslist slash Hurt.
31:39Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
31:40Yes, exactly.
31:41So, so I was into key trucks.
31:44I don't know if you know a key truck.
31:45I know.
31:45It's a Japanese work van.
31:47Okay.
31:47Which is like a dinky little,
31:49it's like a two-seater,
31:50right-hand drive.
31:51And so, of course,
31:52I was like,
31:52well, I'll get one of those,
31:53like a right-hand drive car,
31:55you know?
31:55And so,
31:56so I,
31:57I talked to this woman
31:59from Japan
32:00who was importing cars.
32:01I, I,
32:03I buy this car.
32:04The, the,
32:05the funniest part of this story is...
32:07Why didn't, like,
32:08people take away your,
32:08like, computer?
32:10Or your phone?
32:11That's a really good question.
32:12Like, why do they even
32:12give me a computer?
32:13No, I know.
32:14Yeah.
32:14Yeah.
32:14So I, uh,
32:16I purchased this car.
32:17It gets delivered to,
32:19to, uh,
32:19New Haven,
32:20like where I'm at.
32:21And...
32:21To the hospital.
32:22Well,
32:23here's what happened.
32:24Is that,
32:24I met an orderly
32:25named Ranul.
32:26Hi, Ranul.
32:27Uh,
32:28and he,
32:29I was like,
32:29wait,
32:29what do you do
32:30when you're,
32:30you're off time?
32:31I mean,
32:31like,
32:31you're,
32:31like,
32:31you're not just,
32:32like,
32:32you know,
32:32taking my temperature
32:33every day.
32:34And he was like,
32:34he was like,
32:35yeah,
32:36I wrap cars.
32:36And I was like,
32:37that's great.
32:38So wrapping cars is,
32:40uh,
32:40like,
32:41designing the outside of that?
32:42Yeah,
32:42exactly.
32:43Exactly.
32:43So,
32:43so I...
32:44Don't act like we all
32:45know what you're into.
32:47You don't,
32:47you guys don't know that?
32:48You guys don't wrap
32:48right-handed Japanese cars?
32:51Tinky Vans,
32:52keys,
32:53come on,
32:53who are you dudes?
32:54So I got it,
32:55I got it wrapped with Ranul.
32:57It was getting delivered
32:58to Ranul's,
32:59like,
32:59shop that he was...
33:00So this is what it looks like
33:01after Ranul wrapped
33:03your Tinky Van.
33:04Yep.
33:04Yep,
33:05it's looking good.
33:06My son was like,
33:07it needs a dragon.
33:08And I was like,
33:09so this is an original.
33:10My friend Olney designed this.
33:11Yeah.
33:11Pretty cool.
33:13Um,
33:13and the funny part was,
33:14is that as it was being delivered,
33:16I was trying to pay the guy
33:18who was delivering it
33:19from Pennsylvania,
33:19I was, like,
33:21getting his Zelle information,
33:22but I was also getting an enema
33:23while it was happening
33:25in from my hospital bed.
33:27And I was like,
33:27I was like,
33:28oh, wait,
33:28hold on,
33:29just one second.
33:30I like,
33:30I just need to get,
33:31and I was like,
33:31you know what,
33:31I gotta go,
33:32I gotta go.
33:33So, yeah.
33:34I mean,
33:35who among us
33:36hasn't had that happen
33:37while buying our,
33:38while buying our
33:39wrapped Japanese van?
33:42All right,
33:42I have a ton of questions
33:43about your fantastic movie.
33:44We'll be right back
33:45with more from Yorma.
33:58Welcome back
33:59to Late Night, everybody.
34:00We're here with Yorma Ticcone.
34:02We got a fantastic movie.
34:03It won the Audience Award
34:04at South by Southwest.
34:05Congratulations.
34:07Thank you, guys.
34:09It's a very funny movie.
34:12It is a very violent movie.
34:14It's scary at times.
34:16And it's kind of unlike
34:18anything I've seen recently.
34:20So, just bravo.
34:21It's so well done.
34:23It's based on a Norwegian film.
34:25Yes.
34:25And were you a fan
34:26of the Norwegian film?
34:27Hugely,
34:28which is really scary
34:29to like,
34:30even want to make a remake
34:31to begin with,
34:32but like,
34:33to also be a fan
34:33of the original.
34:34What I loved
34:35about the original,
34:36though,
34:37is that the structure
34:38of it is so surprising.
34:40I mean, you saw it.
34:41Yeah.
34:41Like, it's,
34:41and it goes places
34:43that you don't expect.
34:43And as audience members
34:45these days,
34:46like, knowing so well,
34:47like, how you think
34:48a story is going to move,
34:49it's really nice
34:50to see something
34:50that's sort of surprising.
34:51How much of the plot
34:52are you comfortable saying
34:54based on the clip
34:55we've shown?
34:55It's about a married couple.
34:57Yeah.
34:57And they each have plans
34:58over the course
35:00of a weekend.
35:00Yes.
35:01It's Jason Segel
35:01and Samara Weaving,
35:02and they have conflicting plans
35:05to kill each other.
35:06Yeah.
35:06Yes.
35:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:08It's relatable.
35:09It's pretty relatable.
35:11And, yeah,
35:12so that's ultimately
35:12what they're up against,
35:13and then hijinks ensue
35:15once they decide
35:16to kill each other.
35:17Yes.
35:18I've been saying
35:18it's like almost
35:19three movies in one.
35:20Like, it sort of goes
35:20from, like, thriller,
35:23suspense kind of thing
35:23into almost like a,
35:25not to ruin anything,
35:25but like a home invasion
35:26thing into, like,
35:27an action movie.
35:28Yeah.
35:28Like, it just goes
35:28tons of different places.
35:30You also,
35:30it takes place
35:31in upstate New York,
35:33yet you filmed it
35:34in Finland.
35:35Yes.
35:35Is it harder
35:36to get actors
35:37to agree to do a film
35:39when they have
35:39to go to Finland?
35:41Uh, when the option,
35:43the other option
35:44was Winnipeg.
35:45Yeah.
35:45So, like, I think
35:46that it was a little easier.
35:48Yeah.
35:49Nothing wrong
35:50with Winnipeg.
35:51No, you already
35:51stepped in it, buddy.
35:52I know that there's
35:52a big...
35:53Good luck
35:53with your future
35:54in Winnipeg.
35:55Of your audiences
35:56in Winnipeg.
35:57But, yeah, so, like,
35:58you know,
35:59it was a cabin
36:00on a lake.
36:01Finland has, I think,
36:0317,000 lakes
36:04and beautiful cabins
36:05everywhere.
36:06Like, almost everybody
36:06has, like,
36:07their own little,
36:07like, family cabin there.
36:08You learned some pretty
36:09cool Finland.
36:10Finnish, I should say.
36:11You learned a little
36:12bit of the language.
36:12People were enthusiastic
36:14to tell you.
36:15Yes.
36:16Yes.
36:17Okay, we're gonna
36:17talk about this.
36:18Well.
36:19Uh...
36:20So, my name
36:22is Finnish, right?
36:23Okay.
36:23Jorma?
36:24Yes.
36:24Jorma is how you
36:25pronounce it, apparently.
36:26Yeah.
36:28But it's accidentally Finnish,
36:30right?
36:30Your parents didn't give you
36:31a Finnish name.
36:32Well, they gave me
36:32a Finnish name,
36:33but, like, I was named
36:34after a guitarist
36:35from the Jefferson Airplane,
36:36a 1960s psychedelic rock band.
36:37Gotcha.
36:38Um, I don't know
36:38if I can sing it,
36:39but, like...
36:40Don't you want somebody
36:41to love...
36:41You can't.
36:42You can't sing it.
36:43Okay.
36:43Bleep.
36:43Just...
36:44Bleep all that.
36:47Oh, you thought
36:48you didn't know
36:48if you could legally sing it,
36:49and I was saying...
36:51I didn't think...
36:53I was saying,
36:54technically,
36:55I don't feel like
36:56that's in your register.
36:57Yeah.
36:58You can go
37:00legally go crazy.
37:02They're not gonna
37:03think it's their song.
37:06Got it.
37:07By the way,
37:07when you name your son
37:08after the guitarist
37:10in Jefferson Airplane,
37:11he buys this.
37:14I do think
37:15you sort of become
37:16your name,
37:16and I'm definitely
37:17weirder for it.
37:18So, I met quite a few people,
37:20like, my first week
37:21that I was there,
37:22and they were
37:23very excited to meet me,
37:25and they thought
37:26it was very funny
37:26that my name was Jorma.
37:28Spelled the same way?
37:29Yes.
37:31It's a Finnish name.
37:32So, like, so I...
37:34And I was like,
37:34what's so funny?
37:36And they were like,
37:37oh, well, now,
37:39Jorma means, like,
37:40how do I put this?
37:42Like, a really,
37:43really large penis.
37:45Okay.
37:46Basically.
37:47And I had people
37:48act it out.
37:49Like, they were like,
37:49it's like a veiny...
37:50Like, it was like a...
37:52Two people.
37:53Two people.
37:53Act it out?
37:54Yeah.
37:55It's so funny
37:56that you'd be like,
37:56I don't know what you mean.
37:58Big penis.
37:59I need more information.
38:00Like, oh, cool.
38:01Let me use my arm.
38:03Yeah, what's really funny...
38:04Why did it become
38:04a recent slang?
38:06I don't...
38:06I have no idea.
38:07I'm not Finnish, man.
38:08Yeah, but you were talking
38:09to a dude who had his arm out.
38:11You didn't want to have
38:11to follow up?
38:13I will tell you this.
38:14Last year in Finland,
38:16zero people named
38:17their son Jorma.
38:18Really?
38:19Yeah.
38:19Not a popular name anymore.
38:20Wow.
38:21Yeah, the bottom fell out.
38:22You know what's really funny
38:23is that I told my dad
38:24this story, too.
38:24I was like,
38:25you know, my name is...
38:26He was like,
38:27I didn't know that.
38:28I was like, yeah.
38:29Yeah.
38:30I didn't think you'd find out.
38:31I didn't think you did.
38:32Yeah, let's full team ahead.
38:33I like that he was just like,
38:35we've been waiting
38:35for you to find out.
38:37We thought it would be easier
38:39if it came from a man
38:40at a bar.
38:42On shrooms.
38:43When...
38:44You also have a very
38:45exciting thing coming up.
38:45You've thrown out
38:46the first pitch
38:46at a Mets game.
38:47Oh, my gosh.
38:48When are you doing that?
38:49That's tomorrow, guys.
38:50Tomorrow?
38:50Yeah.
38:52When?
38:54From falling off a ladder
38:55to...
38:56From falling off a ladder
38:56from being on the mound.
38:57When is the last time
38:58you threw a baseball
38:5960 feet and 6 inches?
39:01You know what's really funny
39:02is that the moment
39:03that it was told to me
39:04that I was going to be able
39:05to do this,
39:06I was like,
39:06that's awesome!
39:07And then I was like,
39:07oh, my God.
39:08Yeah.
39:08I don't know if I can do this.
39:10I'm very excited.
39:11I think.
39:12I'm very excited.
39:13You're just going to let it rip,
39:14right?
39:14Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:15Yeah, you got to let it rip.
39:16Yeah, you know me.
39:16I go hard.
39:17Yeah, you're like,
39:17hey, what's up?
39:18I'm your man.
39:19You know what it means.
39:22There's a...
39:23There's, you know,
39:24Diaz, who, like,
39:25was their relief teacher.
39:26Like, he had a song
39:27that was this Timmy trumpet song.
39:29Da-da-da-da.
39:30I can sing that one.
39:33Jesus.
39:34But I was like,
39:35maybe that should be
39:35my walkout music
39:36to really let people down.
39:38That'd be very funny.
39:39Yeah.
39:39You got to do it.
39:40It's going to be
39:40a turtleneck and chain.
39:41All right.
39:42I can't wait.
39:43Buddy, I love you so much.
39:44The movie's fantastic.
39:45Everybody's got to check it out.
