Actors Melvin Gregg (Detrick Moore) and Ramona Young (Nicole Lee) from the Peacock Original 'The Paper' discuss the complexities of their characters' 'will they, won't they' dynamic. They talk about drawing from real-life experiences to create an authentic and unpredictable relationship that defies typical rom-com formulas.

00:00I think the whole will-they-won't-they dynamic is probably the most dynamic in the history of humanity.
00:06Like, we all go through it.
00:07One of the most common shared experiences amongst any type of human is dating.
00:12So I don't think we had to draw from the original.
00:15Well, not the original, but the office to find our space.
00:18I think we both pull from personal experiences and then just trying to navigate the individual space that Detrick and
00:28Nicole shared.
00:29Just kind of being open to what was happening and honest to our specific interactions.
00:36As a show, we're trying to create something super original and authentic and in its own lane and with new
00:43characters and new dynamics.
00:44And so we knew that going in and just playing the honesty of this situation and playing the honesty of
00:51the script that was given to us.
00:54Dating is hard. Like, it's hard.
00:56I think our relationship is honest in a way of acknowledging how awkward and hard it is.
01:02It's not a typical-you know, typically in a rom-com is a similar format.
01:06They hate each other, they love each other, then they hate each other, then they realize they can't live without
01:11each other.
01:11And it's not that simple. Even though that seems complex, it's a lot more complex in real life.
01:17So many other factors come into play.
01:19And I think our characters were affected by outside factors in an amazing way.
01:26It could go so many ways.
01:29Like, maybe they both hate each other.
01:31Or, I don't know. Or, like, maybe there's other people involved.
01:34But I feel like there's so many different ways that it can go, which also does make it kind of
01:39different than, like, a more predictable, will-they-won't-they situation.
01:45Because I have no idea. Do you?
01:48I mean, logically speaking, they both feel strongly about each other.
01:52Even if those feelings aren't like, I love you, I like you, it's like, I hate you, it's still strong
01:58feelings.
01:59And they got to work together, so they have to address it.
02:03So, I think there's going to be another iteration of Dedrick and Nicole.
02:07It's going to be different, but it'll be better because of what happened already.
