Rooster joins The Junkies to discuss the topic of the day: Sonny Styles is a Washington Commander!
Transcript
00:00What's up, Chris?
00:02Good morning, good morning, good morning.
00:04Congratulations to you guys.
00:05That's more important than anything else that we've got to do.
00:09That was awesome.
00:09Saw that video with Mayor Bowser yesterday.
00:13Looking forward to May 4th.
00:15Thanks for letting me be a little part of this show.
00:17Of course.
00:17That's awesome, man.
00:1830 years in this horse crap industry, you know.
00:22We've had two other radio guys on this morning.
00:24At least you're not jaded.
00:25Dave called it a snake pit, and Rooster calls it a horse crap biz.
00:31Well, you know, I mean, listen, you know me.
00:33I strive for nothing but the truth, baby.
00:35We hear you, buddy.
00:36Sometimes that gets me in trouble, but, you know, somehow I'm still alive and kicking.
00:41I don't know when I'm going to be taken out, but 30 years is awesome.
00:45Congratulations for you guys.
00:47Thank you, Bruce.
00:47By the way, this is defensive, but I saw some tweets, or maybe it was on Facebook or Instagram,
00:52because I put the pictures of us with Mayor Bowser on all of our social media platforms.
00:59And there was a lot of joning about how we were dressed.
01:02We didn't know she was coming.
01:04It was a surprise visit.
01:05Jason was doing a wacky jersey bit.
01:07Everybody came in here with jerseys.
01:09I had my Joe Montana jersey on, and the draft told me to take it off.
01:12So I just had a, you know, a t-shirt and a jacket.
01:14It's fine.
01:14I don't know that we would have dressed any differently, but I just want to point that out.
01:18It was a surprise visit.
01:19I think you guys were dressed appropriately, right?
01:21I mean, clearly you were doing a theme.
01:23You didn't know she was going to be there.
01:25I mean, I've never even met the mayor in person.
01:27I'd like to do that before her term is up.
01:29I've been to her office for the big, you know, stadium shindig last April, I think it was.
01:36But I've never even met her in all these years.
01:39So that's awesome.
01:40Congratulations to you guys.
01:41I'm really pumped for you guys.
01:42She's very nice.
01:43And that's a cool day, too, right?
01:45And I guess happy early birthday, Jason.
01:47I saw that as well.
01:48Oh, thank you.
01:49Star Wars Day, Jason's birthday, 30th anniversary.
01:52All those people who are joaning about the way we dress, they can go F off.
01:55All of them.
01:56Every single one, just F off.
01:58Because that's all people do in social media.
02:00They just criticize.
02:01Well, it's all people care about sometimes in this area.
02:05They care about stripes and shades of burgundy and all that stuff.
02:08Right.
02:09We were told that we were going to be meeting clients.
02:13Yeah.
02:13So, I mean, I wore some Peter Millar golf pants.
02:16You're fine.
02:17And I wore a T-shirt and a Pebble Beach jacket.
02:19You're good.
02:19Like a golf outfit.
02:20Don't even sweat it.
02:21What am I supposed to do?
02:21Wear a suit?
02:23No.
02:23Tell them to go kick all the rocks, Jason.
02:25I did.
02:26I just did.
02:27Don't want to lead the witness.
02:29When it got to the seventh pick, did you want Sonny Styles?
02:32Did you want Caleb Downs?
02:33Did you want Jordan Tyson?
02:35No.
02:37I was totally pumped with the selection because that's exactly what I've been saying over
02:41the last night.
02:42I finally settled on Sonny Styles as my official pick about a day and a half ago, I think.
02:46The only notable name that I would have not taken Sonny Styles for, and this is just me,
02:52and I think a lot of people would be Jeremiah Love.
02:54I loved him, pun intended.
02:57But that was it.
02:58Sonny Styles was number two.
02:59I did like a final three ranking for whatever that's worth on my stupid radio show.
03:05I think on Wednesday, and it was love, Sonny Styles, and Reuben Bain, ultimately.
03:12And I thought, you know, again, I thought Jeremiah Love would be gone.
03:17I wasn't sure about Sonny Styles, depending on the way it played out, whether an offensive
03:22lineman maybe even two went before, or maybe Caleb Downs went before.
03:26I am totally pumped, totally happy.
03:28I love the prospect.
03:30I think he's still a little raw, guys, around the edges.
03:32But he has what obviously you can't teach, size, athleticism, NFL bloodlines.
03:38I mean, you watch him on all 22 from the press box view, right, the full field view.
03:45And very rarely can I just identify a dude without looking at his uniform number, right?
03:52Because they all look generally the same.
03:54Not this dude.
03:55I mean, not like he pops out, like he jumps out, you know, I mean, it's somebody and he
04:01has what you can't teach.
04:02You can't teach that.
04:03You can teach him how to be a better Mike.
04:06You can teach him how to be a better linebacker.
04:08You can teach him how to hit like a free train and wrap up and tackle and cover and recognize
04:13and communicate and all that.
04:16And by the way, he has a lot of those skills, too.
04:18He has what you can't teach.
04:19And that's size, speed, and athleticism.
04:22And you know he's coachable.
04:23That's a calling card for Adam Peters and his staff.
04:26If you possess rare athletic traits, if you have that as part of your bio, you're going
04:32to be at minimum on their radar, if not the guy that they target and zero it on.
04:37Yeah.
04:38I mean, if you look at Leo Chanel, who I think you guys had on, if I'm not mistaken, a
04:42couple
04:42of weeks ago, right?
04:43And now Sonny Stiles and Jordan McGee can flat out fly, too.
04:49They might have, I haven't run any numbers, and they might have the top three in terms
04:55of overall athleticism and speed and all that stuff that people throw around, right?
05:02They might have that with those three guys.
05:05Well, specifically with Chanel and Stiles, it's the pairing of the two most athletic
05:11RAS guys in NFL history.
05:13There you go.
05:14There you go.
05:15I saw that, Casey, and I couldn't remember what the, and I even joked with AP last night
05:20at the end, like, you know, off the camera after he was done at the podium, I was like,
05:24ah, you know, do you get a look at, like, the NGS scores or whatever, you know, like, the
05:29NFL IQ does something different, but it's basically the same thing, right?
05:33Either way, ultimately, there is nobody that can accuse this team of not being able to
05:38run, because they thought they had athleticism and speed last year, and then they didn't
05:45have enough of it.
05:46You know, I mean, Frankie Lubu is not, like, a speed demon or a speed merchant by any means,
05:51but Frankie Lubu might only be here another year.
05:54He probably will only be here another year.
05:56He can do other things, like, you know, get downhill and rush the passer and stop the run,
06:01and, you know, he's not great in coverage, not great tackling, but, you know, he'd be
06:04fine, and they'll figure it all out, and Durante Jones will make it all work.
06:08The one thing, guys, that stood out to me about Sonny Stiles, you know, and again, I'm
06:13not a coach, not a scout or anything like that.
06:16I just tried to hone in on as many of the possible options at top 10, so I was watching
06:21him the other night, right, and it was against Texas, and I pointed this out a couple of times.
06:26He communicates his ass off, and you guys are going to see him, once he gets comfortable,
06:32and I don't know how exactly long that takes, you see him just wildly, you know, waving
06:38his arms around and getting everybody into different positions, checking, and that was
06:42the first game at Ohio State under Matt Patricia.
06:45No preseason games, right?
06:47They were with a different defense during their championship winning season under Jim
06:51Knowles.
06:51So that's his first game, second year as a Mike linebacker, but under a new D.C., and
06:56he is just amazing watching him from behind, from the All-22, and then you just watch other
07:02tape of him.
07:03I was watching last night, Miami, after the pick, after things settled down in the college
07:07football play.
07:07He lines up in so many damn different positions.
07:10Dan Quinn and Durante Jones are going to love using this guy.
07:13By the way, it seemed really genuine, too.
07:15I'm sure you picked up on this if you were there, that Peters seemed stunned that Stiles fell to
07:21them at seven.
07:22Like, I'm sure they war-gamed it a bunch, and probably most of the times they weren't
07:26able to get him with the seventh pick.
07:28But the fact that Carnell Tate went four, which was a little bit of a curveball, and
07:32that the Chiefs traded up in front of the commanders to get the lane, that secured Stiles
07:37coming here.
07:39Were you struck by the fact that Peters seemed stunned that he was able to make the pick that
07:43he wanted to?
07:45Absolutely.
07:45I mean, they did not think...
07:47I mean, the indication was that not only was he the top guy at that point, but that he
07:55was higher rated.
07:56I don't know if he was their number one guy, because I don't want to speak out of turn.
08:01They didn't say that.
08:02But Peters admitted he was very surprised, or maybe not very surprised, but surprised when
08:09Mansoor Delaney went at six to Kansas City ahead of him, right?
08:13And maybe that would have been the pick.
08:14I don't know.
08:15I like Mansoor Delaney as well.
08:17The Tate one really threw me for a loop.
08:20I assume you guys as well.
08:23I mean, of all the permutations, I didn't think Tate at four.
08:29AP said that they thought was his ceiling, so maybe they weren't shocked by that.
08:33But either way, it played out okay, because they didn't then need the offensive linemen to
08:38go to fill up some of those gaps, because Tate went maybe a little bit earlier, and to
08:43a team that was kind of unexpected, and so on and so forth.
08:47So they had their option of Bain.
08:49They had their option of Caleb Downs.
08:51I think they made the absolute right move, the absolute right selection.
08:56And now, you look at it and you say, all right, how long is it going to take this guy
09:03to get
09:03comfortable?
09:04Well, again, if the transition from Knowles to Patricia, the championship year to last
09:10year, is any indication, he's going to pick it up pretty damn quickly.
09:14And this is going to be a complicated scheme, right?
09:17We're not going to know where these guys are often deployed from, which is fine.
09:21I'm cool.
09:22I'm down with creativity.
09:24And one other thing, this guy can blitz like a mother.
09:27Yeah.
09:27All right, so day two, second and third round, tonight, commanders don't have a second rounder
09:34as we speak, but they do have a third rounder.
09:36What do you want them to do?
09:39What position should they target in the third round?
09:42Yeah, so AP said very unlikely that they would move up and just don't have the ammunition.
09:47So to the point, I mean, we're all expecting them to stick and stay at 71.
09:5071, well, to be at 71, whether they stay, we'll have to see.
09:57Look, they need wide receiver.
09:58They need target, wide receiver, cornerback, and center.
10:02I don't expect center there unless the top dude, I forgot his name from, say, Alabama,
10:09but I could be wrong on that, guys, is there.
10:12What, you're asking for the best center from Alabama?
10:15If he's there, it might not be, yeah, there you go.
10:21If he's there, I think that could be the selection.
10:24I would go, I would go wide receiver over corner, but I think corner is a pretty big need
10:33and corner's a thinner class.
10:35So again, of course, it depends on who is out there, but just the wide receivers, right?
10:40Because that's probably the names that people know.
10:42You know, if you're looking at Ted Hurst from Georgia State, 6'2", can absolutely frickin' fly.
10:50Now, can he play big boy football?
10:52That I don't know, because Georgia State, right?
10:54But if you're looking for a more sure product, Elijah Surratt, back shoulder, fades,
11:01tough, physical at the point of catch.
11:02Now, he doesn't separate very well.
11:04I'm watching him.
11:05He doesn't separate very well, so don't expect like a blazer.
11:09And something makes me think with their pursuit of Alec Pierce, and likely probably going
11:14to be the end for Terry McLaurin after this year, that they're looking for somebody with
11:19some giddy-up, right?
11:20So that's why I would keep my eyes on Hurst if he's still available.
11:23I don't know if he'll be there at 71.
11:26And again, corner, wide receiver, center are my top three priorities.
11:31Remember, though, guys, last year, everybody thought they needed an edge.
11:35They didn't draft an edge.
11:36Right, right.
11:37Do you like Cakes' thought that they could just fill the wide receiver role with a band-aid,
11:43essentially, somebody like Stephon Diggs or Keenan Allen?
11:46Yeah.
11:48Yeah, there's no doubt that they could do that.
11:51I mean, I don't want it to be Brandon Ayuk, because I don't trust Brandon Ayuk as far as
11:55I could throw him.
11:56And I don't know if he can play football anymore.
11:58He hasn't played football in a year and a half.
12:00And if we all think, well, he's Jaden's BFF, screw that.
12:04I mean, Adam Peters is getting major intel from his BFFs, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan.
12:10And we all know those guys hate him.
12:12Oh, yeah.
12:13They hate his guts.
12:14I mean, I know a lot of people on that coaching staff, guys.
12:17And he doesn't have many other fans in that building.
12:20You know, let's just put it that way.
12:22Okay?
12:23So, whatever intelligence Jaden is giving, the heck with that.
12:29Adam Peters was with Brandon Ayuk before he went cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs two years ago.
12:33Okay?
12:34Enough.
12:34Enough.
12:35I don't want him here.
12:36So, go out.
12:37I don't want Stephon Diggs here, but I'd rather take my chance with Stephon Diggs.
12:41You know, another name you keep an eye on is Tyreek Hill.
12:44Now, he's coming off of significant injuries, 31, 32, whatever it is.
12:47But we know he's got speed to burn.
12:49If they can get him physically right, maybe that's a guy they take a flyer on because that
12:54fits that mold of super speed if he can get right, healthy, super speed, production, all
13:00of that stuff, even though he's got a checkered pass.
13:03So, yeah, they've got lots of different options and lots of different ways to go.
13:06And that's why I point out, just because we all identify it as a need, they don't always
13:11address it as a need.
13:13And they didn't with the edge market last year.
13:15And it came back to haunt them, even though they did wind up signing Von Miller after
13:19the draft.
13:21Rooster, great stuff.
13:22Of course, you're going to have your show.
13:24One to four should be fun.
13:26Thanks, Chris.
13:27Thank you, guys.
13:28Appreciate you.
13:29Have a good weekend.
13:30Of course.
13:30Thank you, sir.
13:31Yeah.
13:31We've got the best buddies walk tomorrow if anybody wants to come out and join us on
13:35the Capitol Mall.
13:35Oh, that's awesome.
13:36It's a great call.
13:38It's Chris Russell's show.
13:39Yep.
13:40Thank you, bro.
13:40On the Team 980 from one to four.
13:43Check it out.
13:44When we come back.
13:46So he loves Stiles.
13:47Yes.
13:48He's into Sonny Stiles.
13:49He's into Sonny.
13:49When we come back, let's give you an update on the Diana Rossini-Mike Vrabel situation.
13:55I mean, it just keeps mushrooming.
13:57More and more keeps coming out every week.
13:59It's bigger, bigger, like every day.
14:00Mushroom cloud.
14:01Yeah.
14:01We'll get into that next here on The Junkies.
