00:00Daisuke and Lizzie, a devoted couple married for seven years, lived in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan.
00:05Lizzie ran a small stationery shop, while her husband, Daisuke, was a hard-working and resilient
00:09logger. However, as the old saying goes, misfortune can strike at any moment. During a logging
00:14operation, Daisuke accidentally slipped. Before he could even scramble back to his feet, a falling
00:19tree crushed him to death on the spot. At Daisuke's funeral, Lizzie met his older brother, Daisuke,
00:24a man she had never encountered before. To her utter astonishment, upon seeing Daisuke's funeral
00:28portrait, Daisuke made a shocking declaration. The man in the photograph was not his younger
00:33brother. Lizzie was left reeling from the revelation. Suddenly, she no longer knew who the man she had
00:37been married to for seven years actually was, or why he would have assumed Daisuke's identity.
00:42Seven years earlier, Lizzie had just divorced her first husband and was raising her six-year-old son,
00:47Suzai, on her own. The mother and son scraped by on the meager earnings from their small stationery
00:52shop. The failure of her first marriage had plunged Lizzie into a prolonged state of melancholy. That
00:57is, until she met Daisuke, a new logger who had recently arrived in town. In his spare time,
01:02Daisuke loved to paint and would frequently visit Lizzie's shop to purchase art supplies. As they
01:06crossed paths more often, a mutual attraction blossomed between them, and they soon married.
01:10Three years into their marriage, Lizzie gave birth to a lovely daughter, adding a new member to their
01:15family. Although he now had a biological child of his own, Daisuke treated Suzai, Lizzie's son from
01:20her previous marriage, as if he were his own flesh and blood. Suzai, in turn, regarded Daisuke as his true
01:26father. The family of four lived a peaceful and heartwarming life together. However, Daisuke's
01:30sudden and tragic death brought an abrupt end to their domestic bliss. It was at Daisuke's funeral
01:35that Lizzie first met his older brother, Daisua, who had traveled from afar to attend. Daisuke had once
01:40confided in Lizzie that his family owned and operated a traditional hotspring in, placing them in a rather
01:45privileged financial position. However, his parents had always doted on Daisua, reserving nothing but
01:50disdain and harsh criticism for Daisuke. A few years prior, Daisuke's parents had both perished
01:55in a car accident. In accordance with his parents' final wishes, Daisua inherited the family's hot
02:01spring in. Unable to endure his older brother's constant ostracism and passive-aggressive behavior
02:05any longer, Dayo eventually chose to run away from home. Since then, he had never contacted his
02:10brother again. He didn't even invite him to attend his wedding to Lizzie. Consequently, Lizzie had never met
02:16Dayo's brother. After Dayo passed away, Lizzie managed through various channels to get in touch
02:20with Daisua. Only then did Daisua arrive to attend his younger brother's funeral. However, he displayed
02:26absolutely no signs of grief regarding his brother's sudden, unexpected death. Instead, he incessantly
02:31rattled off a litany of Dayo's faults and shortcomings right in front of Lizzie. Naturally, Lizzie felt
02:36deeply unsettled by Daisua's disparaging remarks, though she chose not to say much in response. Yet, to
02:41everyone's surprise after he had finished his complaints, Daisua approached his brother's memorial
02:45photograph to offer a stick of incense, only to discover with astonishment that the man depicted in
02:50the picture was not his younger brother Dayo. Furthermore, he had never seen this man before in
02:54his life. Of course, Daisua remained utterly indifferent to the questions of who the man in the photo actually
03:00was, why he had impersonated Dayo, or where Dayo himself might currently be. He subsequently claimed he
03:05had worked to attend to and hurriedly took his leave. Lizzie, however, could not simply let the matter
03:09rest. She felt compelled to uncover the true identity of the man with whom she had shared her
03:14life for seven years. To this end, Lizzie sought out Attorney Cheng, who had previously represented
03:19her in her divorce proceedings, to assist in investigating her late husband's identity.
03:23After listening to Lizzie's account, Attorney Cheng decided to take on the case. Although Daisua
03:27adamantly insisted that Lizzie's late husband was not his brother, Attorney Cheng, as a precautionary
03:32measure, decided to arrange for a DNA comparison between the two men. He had considered a specific
03:37possibility that Dayo might have undergone plastic surgery to escape his former life, thereby rendering
03:42himself unrecognizable to his brother. However, the results of the DNA analysis revealed that
03:46Asua and Lizzie's late husband shared no biological relationship whatsoever. It appeared that the man
03:51with whom Lizzie had lived for seven years was, indeed, not Dayo, since his true name remained
03:57unknown for the time being. We shall refer to him simply as, Mr. X. In Attorney Cheng's view,
04:01the fact that Mr. X was able to successfully assume Dayo's identity, and possessed such intimate
04:06knowledge of Dayo's family circumstances, strongly suggested that he and Dayo were likely well
04:11acquainted. Pursuing this line of inquiry, Attorney Cheng took the photograph of Mr. X. We reached out
04:16to Dayo's former relatives and friends, but everyone claimed not to recognize the man in the photograph.
04:21Moreover, they stated that they had lost contact with Dayo many years ago. Among these individuals
04:25was Mei Zi, his ex-girlfriend of many years. Mei Zi and Dayo had been childhood sweethearts. They began
04:32dating back in high school. Perhaps due to the impetuousness of youth, Dayo and Mei Zi frequently
04:36broke up over trivial matters during their relationship. One day, seven years ago, they had
04:41another heated argument, once again over a trifle, and each vowed to go their separate ways. Since that
04:46day, Dayo has vanished as if into thin air, leaving absolutely no trace. Mei Zi suspects that he has been
04:51murdered, and that Mr. X, the man currently impersonating him, may very well be the killer. After all,
04:56how else could Yu have remained completely incommunicado for seven years? Attorney Cheng did not fully
05:02subscribe to Mei Zi's theory. He felt that Yu's total silence did not necessarily imply his death. It was
05:08equally possible that he had simply found a place to go into hiding, wishing to avoid detection. The problem
05:12remained. With all leads currently exhausted, where should the investigation begin? Just as Attorney Cheng was
05:18grappling with this vexing dilemma, a colleague offered him a fresh line of inquiry. For an ordinary person to
05:23successfully assume another's identity is no simple feat. At the very least, it requires the forgery
05:28of numerous official documents. Consequently, Attorney Cheng's colleague reasoned that if Mr. X intended
05:33to live under Du Yu's identity, he would almost certainly have sought the assistance of criminal
05:37elements. Furthermore, according to his knowledge, there was a veteran forger in the area, known as
05:42Old Jia, who had a long history of fabricating identities for others. Lao Jia had been convicted of
05:46pension fraud and was currently serving his sentence in prison, acting on a colleague's suggestion. And with
05:51nothing more than a what-if attitude, Attorney Cheng visited the prison to meet with Lao Jia. He showed
05:56him a photograph of Mr. X. Coincidentally, the very man who had helped Mr. X fabricate his identity
06:01seven years earlier was none other than Lao Jia. To be precise, Lao Jia had merely facilitated an
06:06identity swap between Du Yu and Mr. X. He had assisted numerous people in swapping identities in the
06:12past. Some sought to whitewash their criminal records, while others simply wished to escape their
06:16families or their unsatisfying lives. Lao Jia did not know the specific reasons behind Mr. X and
06:21Yu's decision to swap identities, but he was absolutely certain that the exchange had been entirely
06:26voluntary on both sides. Lao Jia recalled vividly that, at the time, Mr. X had claimed his name was
06:31Zheng Gunqi. Shortly after leaving the prison, Attorney Cheng quickly confirmed that Zheng Gunqi was
06:36merely an alias used by Mr. X, as he could find absolutely no official records pertaining to such a person.
06:41Just as the investigation appeared to have reached another dead end, Attorney Cheng stumbled upon a
06:46new lead while attending an art exhibition. The exhibition featured artwork created by death row
06:50inmates. Among the exhibits, a sketch of a man with an indistinct blurred face caught Attorney Cheng's
06:55attention. The sketch was a self-portrait by a death row inmate named Lao Lin. As previously noted,
07:00Mr. X, the man who had claimed to be Du Yu, enjoyed painting in his spare time. Attorney Cheng recalled
07:05having seen a sketch in Mr. X's sketchbook that bore a striking resemblance to Lao Lin's self-portrait.
07:10Consequently, Attorney Cheng conducted a thorough review of Lao Lin's personal records, and discovered
07:15that Lao Lin bore a strong physical resemblance to Mr. X. Of course, Lao Lin himself could not
07:20possibly be Mr. X, as their ages did not match at all. Moreover, Lao Lin had been executed for robbery
07:25and murder some 30 years prior. However, the records indicated that Lao Lin had an only son named
07:30Xiao Lin. Judging by his age and physical appearance, the man who had been married to Li Xi for seven
07:35years,
07:36Mr. X, was almost certainly Xiao Lin, the son of the robber-murderer Lao Lin.
07:40Following this new lead, Attorney Cheng visited the boxing gym where Xiao Lin had previously worked
07:44to make inquiries about him. According to the gym's manager, Xiao Lin had once been the most
07:49gifted boxer at the facility. The manager further revealed that when Xiao Lin had applied for the
07:53position at the gym seven years earlier, he had used the very same alias, Zheng Genchi.
07:58In a boxing league tournament, Kobayashi fought his way through the ranks, overcoming every opponent to
08:02reach the finals. Unexpectedly, when he stood just one step away from the championship title,
08:06he voluntarily withdrew from the competition. The boxing gym's proprietor was absolutely furious.
08:11Under his intense interrogation, Kobayashi finally confessed the truth. He was the son of a convicted
08:16robber and murderer. Throughout his entire life, from childhood into adulthood, he had never received
08:21a shred of eternal love. Instead, he had endured nothing but cold stares and ostracism from those
08:26around him solely because of his identity as the kin of a violent criminal. His mother, unable to bear the
08:30emotional burden, had eventually died of sorrow. Driven to desperation, Kobayashi changed his name
08:36to Saniki, hoping to leave his past behind and start life anew. However, as the years passed,
08:41Kobayashi noticed that his physical appearance was growing increasingly similar to his father's.
08:46Whenever he looked into a mirror and saw that face staring back at him, he was overcome with
08:50feelings of despair and revulsion. Kobayashi had not become a boxer out of any genuine passion for the
08:55sport. Rather, he sought to use the physical pain inflicted by repeated blows in the ring as a means
08:59to alleviate his deep-seated psychological anguish. Perhaps it was his utter fearlessness in the ring,
09:04or perhaps it was simply his extraordinary natural talent for boxing. But Kobayashi quickly rose to
09:09become the gym's rising star, ultimately fighting his way into the league finals. Yet, he was terrified
09:14that if he were to compete in the finals, he would inevitably attract intense public scrutiny and
09:18adoration. At that point, the past he had so desperately tried to conceal would undoubtedly be
09:23unearthed and exposed. Consequently, he chose to forfeit his spot in the finals, resigned from the gym,
09:28and severed all ties with everyone he had known there. Viewed in this light, it appears that Mr. X
09:33is indeed Kobayashi. He adopted the alias Saniki, specifically to escape the stigma of being a violent
09:38criminal's son, and subsequently used that alias to swap identities with Daisuke. The pressing question
09:43now remains, did Daisuke himself know that the man with whom he exchanged identities, Saniki, was the son of a
09:49convicted murderer? If he did know, why on earth would he agree to swap identities with Kobayashi?
09:54Furthermore, where is Daisuke right now? Is he dead or alive? Just as attorney Chang was preparing to
09:59devise a strategy to track down Daisuke's whereabouts, Daisuke's ex-girlfriend, Yumi Keo, came forward
10:04voluntarily to offer a crucial lead. It turned out that ever since her last meeting with attorney
10:08Chang, Yumi Keo had developed a keen interest in tracking down Daisuke. Determined to discover his
10:13whereabouts, she had begun acting in Daisuke's name. She registered a social media account and,
10:18adopting the tone and mannerisms of Dayo, posted a series of updates. Several of these posts touched
10:23upon the romantic history between Dayo and Maisie. Given Maisie's intimate knowledge of Dayo, she reasoned
10:29that if he were indeed hiding somewhere, deliberately avoiding detection, he would surely reach out to her
10:33immediately upon seeing her posts, insisting she take them down to avoid drawing unwanted attention.
10:38Sure enough, a few days after Maisie began her continuous stream of updates, a user going by the name
10:43Zeng Niki reached out to her. Seizing the opportunity, Maisie proposed they meet in person
10:48to talk things over. Her purpose in visiting attorney Chang this time was to ask him to accompany her to
10:52the meeting with Zeng Niki, so they could determine once and for all whether this person was, in fact,
10:57Dayo. Soon after, at the agreed-upon cafe, Zeng Niki arrived exactly as promised. It was him,
11:02Dayo, the man who had been missing for seven years. Faced with the many questions posed by Maisie and
11:07attorney Chang, Dayo made a candid confession. He had known all along that Zeng Niki was the son of a
11:12robber and murderer. However, he did not care about that identity. He had long felt suffocated
11:16by the environment of his own biological family. As long as he could escape the identity and life
11:21of Dayo, he was willing to become anyone else, even the son of a violent criminal. After listening
11:25to Dayo's words, Maisie and attorney Chang were left speechless. Yet, both felt a profound sense of
11:30understanding regarding his choices and decided they would no longer intrude upon his life. Finally,
11:35attorney Chang forwarded the information he had uncovered to his client, Li Zhi. Upon learning the true
11:40identity of her late husband, Li Zhi harbored no resentment toward him in her heart. Instead,
11:44she felt a deep sense of sympathy and compassion. After attorney Chang departed, Li Zhi truthfully
11:49revealed her husband's true identity to their son, Shuzai. The young girl Itsuki, possesses a
11:53clarity and purity that surpasses even her mother's. To her, her stepfather's true identity is of little
11:58consequence. What truly matters is that, in this man, she genuinely senses the warmth and care of a
12:03father. The story featured in this episode is drawn from a man, released in 2022. A highly acclaimed
12:08Japanese film adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name. The original novel reportedly
12:13garnered numerous awards within Japan. The plot itself is quite simple. The narrative conceit of
12:18swapping identities is a common trope in both film and literature. Works such as Miyuki Maebi's
12:22masterpiece, All She Was Worth and Kigo Higashino's novel The Letter have all explored similar themes.
12:27However, a man poses a particularly profound question regarding identity. When we are dissatisfied
12:32with our origins or our current circumstances, can we truly improve our lives simply by becoming
12:37someone else? In reality, every individual's destiny is shaped by a confluence of factors,
12:41including one's background, personality, and worldview. While we naturally cannot alter our
12:46origins, it would seem we can steer our destiny in the right direction by refining our character
12:50and mindset. Yet, a man offers a rather paradoxical perspective on this issue. Not only does Daesuki
12:55ultimately fail to reclaim his original identity, but the story also features a parallel subplot.
13:00Attorney Kido is, in fact, a descendant of Korean immigrants. Although he has achieved professional
13:04success, rising to the ranks of the legal profession, he remains unable to fully embrace his own
13:09identity. Later, following his wife's infidelity, Kido becomes even more disillusioned with a life he
13:15already found unsatisfying. Consequently, he ultimately decides to face the future living
13:20under the guise of Daesuki. This narrative device is undeniably clever, yet it ultimately leaves the
13:25audience with a profound sense of powerlessness. Is it truly impossible for a person, no matter how hard
13:30they strive to escape the constraints imposed by their origins? That brings us to the end of today's
13:35story. The script for this episode was once again penned by our lead writers, Tushado and Dottagon.
