Xiao Mo, a philosophy student, interns at a funeral home in an attempt to decipher the question of life and death. However, he encounters the bizarre death of his mentor, Chen Hui. There is a legend in the village that a Responsive Well can bring the dead back to life. After Chen Hui's son died in an accident, Chen made a wish at the ancient well and disappeared the next day. Xiao returns to the village with the mysterious undertaker, Gray Hair, to conduct an investigation. Gray Hair uses science to solve the supposed supernatural phenomena—the body in the well, the adopted daughter hanging herself, the ghost hitting the wall in the thick fog, and other strange things all turn out to be carefully laid-out deceptions. When obsession meets science and lies are torn apart by the truth, people finally realize that the real abyss is not in the well, but in the human heart.
