00:00For three or four decades, it is the most educated and the highest income that they grew in the United
00:07States.
00:08And I've been involved in the U.S. and D. relationship for 30 years as well,
00:14having chaired the agent subcommittee on the Foreign Affairs Committee,
00:19having spent 30 years and out on the Foreign Affairs Committee,
00:24and having served as co-chair for four years of the Indian Caucus, which is the largest.
00:34For India, we think of Mumbai, and we think of the general deaths that occurred on April the 22nd,
00:42that we are here to commemorate, to recognize, and to mourn.
00:48Some 26 people were killed, and 20 went on April the 22nd.
00:55Five terrorists entered into the valley.
01:01This group calling itself the Resistance Front,
01:06that's saying they deny responsibility, they deny responsibility.
01:11So they separated people by gender and by religion.
01:18And they killed, I believe it was 25 individuals and one Christian.
01:26This clearly was an offshoot of the L.E.T.,
01:31an organization which unfortunately had found sanctuary in Pakistan.
01:37And as the world focuses on Islamabad,
01:40where the talks are taking place, or are not taking place, or are likely taking place,
01:45we have to use this as an opportunity to damn.
01:49The Pakistani government clamped down on the L.E.T.
01:53and the J.E.F.
01:54and the foreign administration.
02:01America and India are united because we are the oldest democracy,
02:05and India is the largest democracy.
02:07But we are also united in mourning the victims of terrorism.
02:13We see this chart here going back to 1985.
02:17So many Indians who have suffered at the hands of terrorism.
02:27How was it worse to open a consulate in Los Angeles?
02:35But we, uh, today our focus, though, is not to celebrate that decision,
02:41but to focus on the victims of terrorism.
02:46I'd like to remember one Indian Navy Lieutenant, uh,
02:50Dina Ayn Al-Raw, an engineering graduate who joined the Navy in 2022.
02:57He was a cheerful officer, committed to his duties on April 16th last year.
03:04Uh, Dina Ayn Al-Raw, an engineer, uh, Dina Ayn Al-Raw.
03:08And then they planned a honeymoon in Switzerland.
03:10That fell through, so instead they went to another mountainous area,
03:15Casualty.
03:17And it was only six days after the wedding,
03:20and the Vibod-Garwal was viciously killed,
03:23and attacked by terrorists targeting him.
03:26So his wife witnessed his death,
03:28and his wife just a few days witnessed his death.
03:31And his remains were referred to his family on May 1st,
03:36which would have been his 27th birthday.
03:40Let us remember Lieutenant Narwhal and all the victims
03:44of the terrorist attacks that had been against India,
03:49and remember the victims of terrorism against America.
03:53We also remember November 2008,
03:57who saw the heavily-armed terrorists from, again,
04:02Pakistan-based L.E.T.
04:04arriving by scene,
04:06striking a number of civilian targets across the city,
04:09including the Taj Hotel,
04:11including the Mumbai Khamad House.
04:16The siege lasted 60 hours,
04:20leaving 166 people dead,
04:22with victims hailing from 10 countries,
04:26including 6th America.
04:29So I look forward to
04:31uniting with the Indian
04:33for peace and stability in the world
04:36and in the Indo-Pacific,
04:38and to deal with the
04:40terrible,
04:42terrible outcomes
04:44of extremist Islamic terrorism
04:46and other terrorism.
04:49Part of that
04:51effort to bring our countries together
04:53should start
04:54with the repeal of the outrageous tariffs
04:58that had beset
04:59what was our growing economic alliance.
05:03So,
05:04that's it.
05:06And,
05:07these words,
05:08who are perhaps
05:09the most underpaid
05:10man in Washington.
05:13You see,
05:14I get a certain salary.
05:16Branch Becker gets the same salary.
05:18We each represent,
05:19in my case,
05:23750,000
05:24Los Angelenos
05:26here in Washington.
05:28The ambassador represents,
05:30what is it,
05:311.4 billion people.
05:34So do the math.
05:36We can make a number of people
05:39myself and a dozen others
05:41based on the number of people
05:43that he represented.
05:45So,
05:46we will see
05:47the stories
05:49of the victims
05:49of terrorism.
05:51And we are
05:51dedicating ourselves
05:53to exploring
05:54and destroying
05:56the terrorist networks
05:58that have afflicted
05:59both of our countries.
06:00I'm Brad Schumel.
06:01Thank you very much.
