Death In Paradise - Season 15 - Episode 02
Transcript
00:05It is Friday, it's 5.52pm, and it is the end of the first week with my new clients, Alistair
00:13and Margot Hartnell.
00:14They say that coming here is the last roll of the dice for them. They had been on the cusp
00:19of getting a divorce.
00:21Walk forward. Turn right. Turn right. Turn left. No, no, wait. No, sorry. That's my...
00:27For God's sake, Alistair. Love has been replaced by hostility. You're useless at this. That's enough.
00:35Sorry, darling. All trust has gone. For sake. Sorry. Sorry. It's okay.
00:40Compounded by the fact that they seem unable to communicate in a meaningful and a reciprocal way.
00:46I feel unheard when I talk to you about how I'm feeling.
00:53Well, often when you do want to talk, I've got work on my mind and that's important too.
01:03So it's just a case of bad timing, that's all.
01:06Their marriage doesn't make sense to them anymore.
01:09Over the course of the coming weeks, I'd like to see if we can retrace the steps that led to
01:14this situation.
01:15See if we can work out how they got here.
01:18Next we have Luke and Stacey Warbur.
01:22I believe the fault lines don't run as deep with them.
01:25I'm grateful for how patient you are.
01:28And that you're here with me now, doing this.
01:32Because...
01:34I know I'm not giving you what you need.
01:36That's so sweet, babe.
01:38On the surface, they have a loving marriage.
01:42But...
01:42Now can we try taking each other's hands, please?
01:46And maintaining that same eye contact.
01:49By their own admission, there are significant intimacy issues.
01:52Why can't you do this?
01:55Uh...
01:56I'm sorry.
01:58I'm sorry, sorry. Could I take five?
02:00It's okay.
02:01Of course.
02:02It's okay, Luke.
02:05Take your time.
02:06I mean...
02:07It's okay.
02:08It's all part of the process.
02:11It's Friday.
02:12It's the beginning of the weekend now.
02:14But Monday will be a big day.
02:16I have exciting plans.
02:18I think that there could be a real breakthrough.
02:23Hello.
02:24Darling.
02:27Wine's good.
02:30This looks nice, doesn't it?
02:31Yeah.
02:31Hi, everyone.
02:33Hi.
02:33I just wanted to say thank you very much for all your hard work and your commitment this week.
02:39You should be very proud of yourselves.
02:42There's more for us to do next week.
02:45But for now, enjoy your evening.
02:50Right, bon appetit.
02:52Cheers, everyone.
02:53Cheers.
02:56Cheers.
03:20I just feel like every single thing I say is wrong.
03:24Every word, every utterance.
03:26She pounces on it like a wild animal.
03:29Yeah, she certainly has a way with her words, your missus.
03:36I thought you'd never ask.
03:37It's only duty-free.
03:41That's Kira's stuff.
03:43Can't still be swimming, can she?
04:04That's Kira's stuff.
04:41That's Kira's stuff.
04:52That's Kira's stuff.
04:53My ex wanted me to try that kind of thing, couples therapy.
04:55Not my cup of tea.
04:57You don't think it could be good for a relationship?
05:00Opening up more and sharing with each other?
05:04Nah.
05:05Ah, crime scene.
05:08Inspector, um, I don't think you should wear that to the crime scene.
05:12Why not?
05:12Because it's got I Heart St. Marie on the front of it.
05:21Still haven't gotten your clothes back then.
05:23I must have left 50 messages for Solomon.
05:26This is the only shirt he didn't take.
05:27But I've got a mate from the Met to call in a favour,
05:30and I've got him to triangulate his phone for me.
05:32Oh, that's a very good use of their resources.
05:35Hey, listen.
05:36He stole from me, and that is a crime.
05:41Inspector, I just think you should take the hat off.
05:44Yeah, all right.
05:54The victim is Kira Mayhew, 42 years old,
05:58fully qualified clinical therapist.
06:00Ran a couples retreat here.
06:02Cause of death looks like a drowning.
06:04Went for a swim at 7 o'clock yesterday evening,
06:07and at 9 o'clock, two fishermen came across a body
06:10about 100 metres out, directly opposite this spot.
06:13They've watched over the body until the paramedics arrived.
06:16Who else was here last night?
06:19About six people in total, four residents,
06:21two staff, the chef and the waitress.
06:23There's some bruising around her neck and shoulders.
06:26Looks like finger marks.
06:27Paramedics say they're recent,
06:29more likely from someone forcing her down under the water.
06:32They reckon it's murder, that's why they called us.
06:35So what?
06:36She swam out to sea, and somebody was with her and did this?
06:39Or maybe somebody was waiting for her out there on a boat?
06:42Inspector!
06:43What would you say if I told you
06:45I just found a bingo ball at the crime scene?
06:48I'd say, have you actually found a bingo ball at the crime scene?
06:52And I would say yes.
06:53Yes, I did find a bingo ball at the crime scene.
06:57Thirteen.
06:58Unlocking for some.
07:01I mean, it probably doesn't have much to do
07:04with Kira Mayhew's murder, though, right?
07:06We don't know yet.
07:07Let's bag it.
07:08Oh, okay.
07:09The bingo ball's officially evidenced now.
07:11Bag in, the bingo ball.
07:13All right.
07:14Sergeant Fletcher, you talk to the staff.
07:16Officer Rose, see if there's any security cameras in the place.
07:20And DS Thomas, let's talk to the guests.
07:22There.
07:23Oh.
07:24I'll keep on with that.
07:29Sorry, did you just say murder?
07:31What, I thought it was an accident?
07:32Well, it wasn't.
07:34So we need to ask you where you all were
07:35between the hours of seven and nine last night.
07:37Are you saying we're suspects?
07:39When did you last see Kira Mayhew?
07:41Before dinner, we were having some aperitifs
07:43and she came and told us to have a nice night.
07:45Enjoy your evening.
07:49What time was that?
07:51Just before seven.
07:52She went for a swim
07:53and didn't see her again until she was...
07:56was, um...
07:57Dead?
08:00Just say it.
08:03And was that a regular thing,
08:05her going for a swim at that time?
08:07Seemed to be, like, most evenings.
08:09Kira said it was her own therapy.
08:11Getting into the sea after a long day,
08:13she found it, uh, restorative.
08:16And during the two hours between you seeing her
08:18and her body being found, you were...
08:21We were all together having dinner.
08:26Look, it wasn't one of us, okay?
08:29Nobody told us that we were going to be grilled like this.
08:31None of us have even been to bed.
08:33Mama took a sleeping pill.
08:38Don't apologise for me, Alistair.
08:40You know I hate it when you do that.
08:41Sorry, dear.
08:42And don't call me dear, either.
08:44No, of course not. Sorry. For God.
08:47Okay.
08:49Well, if you think of anything,
08:51let us know.
08:55God help us.
09:02I spoke with the staff who can alibi each other
09:04for the time of the murder.
09:06They were preparing dinner between 7 and 9.
09:09You're Tinky listening?
09:11I'm listening.
09:12Just checking, sir.
09:13What did they say about the victim?
09:15Well, that she was a decent boss.
09:17Always paid them on time.
09:18Was friendly.
09:19Any idea you'd want to harm her?
09:20No.
09:21They reckon she didn't really know anyone here.
09:23Never saw her go out much.
09:25Kept herself to herself.
09:26I checked her phone.
09:28All her texts and all her emails,
09:30work-related,
09:31apart from her mum back in England.
09:33How's she doing?
09:34Oh, not great.
09:36We said we'd speak tomorrow
09:37when she might be a little bit calmer.
09:39I found this.
09:43Date and time is yesterday.
09:465.52 in the afternoon.
09:49That's just over an hour before her swim.
09:59It's the weekend now,
10:01but Monday will be a big day.
10:02I have exciting plans
10:04and I think that there
10:06could be a real breakthrough.
10:12My instinct on this
10:14is that a lie is being told.
10:17If I can draw out the truth,
10:21the fallout would be
10:22truly devastating.
10:27And only a couple of hours later,
10:29she's been murdered.
10:30You're thinking one of the guests here did it?
10:33I'm thinking maybe one of them did.
10:37On one hand,
10:39all the four guests
10:40were having dinner together
10:41at the time of Kira Mayhew's murder.
10:44Now, look,
10:45there are only two cameras in the resort.
10:47Just before 7 o'clock,
10:48Kira Mayhew goes for a swim.
10:50But on the other hand,
10:52all the guests leave the table
10:53once during the evening.
10:55So, in theory,
10:56it could have been any one of them.
10:58All right.
10:59Now, here.
11:01At 18 minutes past 7,
11:03Mr. Hartnell go to his bedroom
11:04to get his glasses.
11:06And in here,
11:087.46,
11:09Stacey Waba goes to the bathroom
11:10to check her makeup.
11:12And at 8.03,
11:14Mrs. Hartnell goes to grab her shawl.
11:16And after that,
11:17at 8.30,
11:18Luke Waba goes to his bedroom
11:19to get a bottle of rum.
11:22So,
11:23each of them had opportunity
11:24to kill the victim
11:26during the dinner?
11:27Except,
11:29on the other hand,
11:31no one leaves the table
11:32for more than 2 to 3 minutes.
11:34And they all returned
11:35dry as a bone.
11:37Okay,
11:37so how did one of them
11:38manage to leave the dinner table,
11:40run down to the beach,
11:41get themselves
11:43somehow out to sea 100 meters,
11:45drown Kira Mayhew,
11:46then come all the way back,
11:48dry off,
11:49before returning to the table
11:52in less than a few minutes?
11:54Well,
11:56that's just not possible.
12:08All right,
12:09Sebastian,
12:10I'll read the victim's notebook.
12:12You make us start
12:12listening to these tapes.
12:14Focus on the ones recorded
12:15since the four suspects arrived.
12:17Yeah,
12:18these tapes are teeny tiny.
12:21Look,
12:21they make me look like a giant.
12:23Says the giant.
12:24Yes.
12:26So,
12:27printed the victim's schedule
12:28the day of her murder.
12:29Trust exercises in the morning.
12:31Sounds fun.
12:33Lunch,
12:33followed by
12:34one-to-one sessions
12:35in the afternoon
12:36with Stacey Walbert,
12:37then Alistair Hartnell.
12:39Inspector,
12:40I came to check in
12:42on the murder case.
12:43The minister gets nervous
12:45when one of our resorts
12:46is hit by a crime.
12:47I'd like to reassure her
12:49it's in harm.
12:51Yes,
12:52sir.
12:53We're currently working
12:54on the basis
12:54that one of the four residents
12:56did it.
12:57We just need to work out
12:58which one it was
12:59and how they did it
13:00and why.
13:02So,
13:03pretty much everything.
13:07You look smart,
13:09sir.
13:10Going somewhere nice?
13:11Yacht club.
13:12Lobster night.
13:14Hmm?
13:17Lobster night,
13:18eh?
13:18That's why you're looking
13:20so snappy.
13:23You know,
13:24snappy.
13:25Like,
13:26claws.
13:27No, no, no.
13:28Lobster claws.
13:28I get the joke,
13:29Inspector.
13:30I just
13:31didn't find it
13:32very funny.
13:35Enjoy your evenings?
13:37You too, sir.
13:38Snappy.
13:39Like claws,
13:39you know.
13:43Nope.
13:44I need to get this.
13:46Hello, mate.
13:49Excuse me,
13:51Commissioner.
13:54Anton Bousset.
13:56How long has it been
13:57since we last...
13:58Crossed paths?
13:59Or were you going to say
14:01crossed swords?
14:02I hadn't decided
14:03before you caught me off.
14:07How can I help you,
14:08Mr. Bousset?
14:09Anton, please.
14:11We're going to publish
14:12an article about you,
14:14Commissioner,
14:14and I want to give you
14:16the right to run.
14:17Respond.
14:18Here is a draft copy
14:19of the piece.
14:23Let me know
14:24when you're
14:25ready to talk.
14:30Inspector,
14:31that was your contact
14:32at the Met,
14:32wasn't it?
14:33You know where
14:34Solomon is?
14:35Palm Beach Hotel.
14:36I'm coming with you.
14:55It's something I could
14:56easily live without.
14:58But once you have
14:59your own private jet,
15:00it's hard to give that up,
15:01you know?
15:02I love it.
15:04Ladies,
15:05it's a fun night,
15:07right?
15:11Solomon!
15:13Merlin!
15:14Oh!
15:15Francis,
15:15seeing you here,
15:16man!
15:17We're just talking
15:17about you.
15:18Come, come, come, come, come, come.
15:20Meet Tashel
15:22and Tashana.
15:23This is my brother,
15:25would you believe?
15:25Murphy!
15:26We're half-brothers.
15:27Where's my stuff?
15:28You stole from me,
15:29and I want my things back.
15:30I never stole anything.
15:32He gets confused sometimes.
15:34Had a bump to his head
15:35a few years back.
15:35Solomon!
15:37I'm not joking around.
15:38You get me my things now,
15:40or I arrest you.
15:41It's your choice.
15:43Okay, man.
15:44I understand.
15:46Let me just...
15:53Oh!
15:54Oh!
15:55Oh!
15:55Are you okay?
15:56I'm fine!
15:57Come on, get him!
16:22Now you can add assaulting
16:23a police officer
16:24to theft and breaking
16:25and entering.
16:26Mervin!
16:26My brother,
16:27please don't do this to me.
16:29I'm sorry, all right?
16:31I just...
16:32I really needed the money.
16:34I'm in debt.
16:35And it's to the kind of person
16:37you don't much want
16:38to be in debt to.
16:41I'm sorry I let you down.
16:42I just...
16:45I didn't know
16:46what else to do.
16:47I just need my stuff back, soul.
16:5024 hours.
16:52Otherwise, I'm pressing charges.
16:54Do you understand?
16:56Appreciate it, man.
17:12So, we dusted the bingo ball
17:14for prints, sir,
17:16like you requested,
17:17but got nothing from it.
17:18Oh.
17:19Oh, well.
17:20Worth a try, eh?
17:22Right.
17:23What else we got?
17:24We've done background
17:25on both couples.
17:27The Hartnells live in Islington
17:30in London.
17:31He's a barrister.
17:32She runs a luxury
17:33interior design business.
17:35Ah, very Islington.
17:36They did a brief spell
17:38of grief counselling
17:39with another therapist
17:40shortly after their daughter died.
17:42She was only 17.
17:45Seems their marriage
17:46has been struggling ever since.
17:48What about the Warbers?
17:50Also live in London.
17:52Luke works in finance,
17:54earns well,
17:55has been married to Stacey
17:56for three years.
17:57I've been reading
17:58the victim's notes
17:58on both couples.
18:00She records a lot
18:01after her sessions with them,
18:03especially on the dictaphone.
18:04But it's okay.
18:06Officer Rose is working on it.
18:08Yes.
18:09Yes, I am.
18:10I am totally on top of it.
18:12So, don't you worry, Inspector.
18:15It seems the Warbers
18:16came out here
18:17because they've been
18:18having intimacy issues.
18:21It's been 18 months
18:22since they were last
18:25intimate with each other.
18:26When you say intimate,
18:27you mean intimate?
18:29Yes.
18:30And according to the notes,
18:32the issue is entirely
18:33on Luke's side.
18:34And in one of their last sessions,
18:36Miss Mayhew got him
18:37to admit why he was like this.
18:41Go on.
18:4218 months ago,
18:43Luke was unfaithful.
18:45He had a one-night thing.
18:46Naughty, naughty boy.
18:48Mm-hmm.
18:49With him wife's sister.
18:51Cha-cha.
18:52Oh, sorry, what?
18:54Mm-hmm.
18:55And ever since,
18:55he's been wracked
18:56with guilt and shame.
18:57Why?
18:58He's been a busy, busy man.
19:00I mean,
19:00that explains why
19:01he can't do the business.
19:03Mm-hmm.
19:04Now,
19:05Kira told him
19:06that he needs
19:08to confront it,
19:09that he can't
19:10ignore it anymore.
19:12She was suggesting
19:13he tell Stacey.
19:14I think she knew
19:15their marriage
19:15couldn't move forward
19:16based on a betrayal
19:17like that.
19:19Is that what
19:20Kira Mayhew
19:21was referring to
19:22when she said...
19:23My instinct on this
19:25is that a lie
19:26is being told.
19:27So,
19:28Luke killed her
19:29to silence her?
19:31Stop the truth
19:32coming out?
19:37It's a cliche,
19:38isn't it?
19:39Saying something
19:40is the biggest mistake
19:41of your life.
19:41How did it happen?
19:43Oh, I don't know.
19:44I just...
19:46People flirt,
19:47you know?
19:48With Stacey,
19:50we go for a night out
19:51and the blokes swarm in.
19:53I mean,
19:54you've seen her,
19:54she's gorgeous.
19:55She could have anyone
19:55if she wanted.
19:58And what happened
19:59with me and Shell,
20:00her sister,
20:01it felt like I was...
20:03Like I was proving myself
20:05that I've still got it too,
20:07you know?
20:07But something in you
20:08must have wanted
20:08to come clean
20:09because you admitted
20:10it to Kira Mayhew.
20:12I thought she'd help.
20:13In what way?
20:14Absolve me
20:15of the guilt
20:16if I opened up.
20:18I think that's
20:19a priest you're after.
20:20But all she said
20:20was that the marriage
20:21couldn't survive
20:22if it was built
20:23on a betrayal like that.
20:26She's normally
20:26so calm and measured
20:27but with that,
20:30it really bothered her.
20:32Like she wasn't
20:33going to let it go.
20:35And that's what
20:36worried you.
20:37Panicked you
20:38that she would tell
20:39Stacey herself
20:39and then you'd lose
20:41your gorgeous wife
20:42completely.
20:42But you weren't
20:43going to let that happen
20:44and that is why
20:45you murdered Kira Mayhew.
20:46No.
20:47No.
20:48That's why I've come to you
20:49because I know
20:50what it looks like.
20:52But it wasn't me
20:53who killed her.
20:55I swear to you.
20:59Alright.
21:02That's all for now.
21:16What a moron.
21:18It's her.
21:23Inspector.
21:24Postmortem's in.
21:26Confirms what we thought.
21:28Water in the victim's lungs
21:29confirmed she died
21:31due to droning.
21:32Finger marks on her shoulders
21:33and neck
21:34suggest she was forced
21:35under the water.
21:38But how did the killer
21:39manage to do it?
21:40To leave from the dinner table here,
21:42run down to the beach,
21:44drown Kira,
21:45then get back
21:46to the dinner table
21:47seemingly with not a spot
21:48of water on them
21:49and in just a few minutes.
21:52And how does this figure
21:53into all of this?
21:54Why was it at our crime scene?
21:56You do know
21:57things get washed up
21:58on beaches
21:59all the time.
22:00Yeah,
22:01but a bingo ball.
22:05Officer Rose.
22:08Officer Rose.
22:11Officer Rose.
22:13Huh?
22:14Have you made any progress
22:15with the tapes yet?
22:16No progress as such,
22:18but I assure you,
22:19when I get something,
22:20you'll be the first to know.
22:21Inspector,
22:22I just spoke with
22:23the victim's mum, Sandra.
22:25Go on.
22:25To this day,
22:26her mum doesn't know
22:28why Kira left the UK.
22:30She didn't just want
22:31a change of scene?
22:32No,
22:32it was totally
22:33out of the blue.
22:34Overnight,
22:35Kira left her fiancé,
22:37announced that she was
22:37setting up a practice abroad,
22:39never even kept in touch
22:40with any of her friends.
22:42So it got me thinking,
22:44could Kira Mayhew's murder
22:45be connected to something
22:46that happened back in the UK?
22:52Also, sir,
22:54Kira's mum
22:54spoke with her
22:56just before that swim,
22:57while she was heading
22:58down to the beach.
23:02And she's...
23:04Officer Rose,
23:05see what's going on
23:06out there, will you?
23:11Anyway,
23:13she said
23:13Kira seemed distracted,
23:16distant, even.
23:17Her mum said it was like
23:18she wasn't even present.
23:20Inspector,
23:21some big-headed bird
23:23in her sports car
23:24is asking for you.
23:35So,
23:36you got my stuff then?
23:38Not in a physical sense,
23:39no.
23:40What's that supposed to mean?
23:41Been a busy day.
23:42Bit of business here,
23:43bit of business there.
23:44Always somewhere
23:45I got to be
23:45in Salomon land.
23:49But,
23:50I know who has your thing,
23:51so,
23:54jump in
23:55and let's go get there.
24:05So, this is where
24:06all my stuff is.
24:07Nice.
24:09It's Myrta Chastanets, please.
24:10Yes.
24:11You ever come across her?
24:12No.
24:13Funnily enough.
24:14She's the kind of person
24:15you go to if you have
24:16some things to sell
24:17that maybe other people
24:18may be less inclined to.
24:19So, she fancy stolen goods?
24:20It's not for me
24:21to put a label on what.
24:22So, that's a yes.
24:24We'll have you reunited
24:25with your stuff in no time.
24:27She's a very amenable woman.
24:31Who is it?
24:32Myrta Chastanets,
24:33It's Salomon Clark,
24:34remember me?
24:35Got my brother here with me.
24:37It was his stuff
24:38I sold you and
24:40we were wondering
24:41if we could get it back.
24:42No.
24:43No, clear up.
24:45Myrta Chastanets,
24:46honey.
24:47Don't you honey me,
24:48monster.
24:48She's a lot more vexed
24:49than I remember her being before.
24:51Myrtle,
24:52I'm going to cut to the chase.
24:53You are currently
24:54in possession of items
24:55illegally taken from my home.
24:59Myrtle.
25:04I think she's thinking about it.
25:10What the?
25:12What's she doing that for?
25:13What is this stuff?
25:16It's in my eyes.
25:18It's burning.
25:19Hot sauce.
25:20Why'd she pull hot sauce over me?
25:22I don't know, man.
25:23But it got to admit.
25:25Kind of funny.
25:30Myrtle, myrtle.
25:31Myrtle, myrtle.
25:31Myrtle, myrtle.
25:31Myrtle.
25:31Myrtle.
25:32How much hot sauce has she got?
25:33Why has she got so much of it?
25:34I think it's some
25:34bullet teeth she got going on.
25:35If you first go set your packet,
25:37then I will set Tiberius on you.
25:39Who's Tiberius?
25:42Feels like we come at a bad time.
25:44Maybe we should come back
25:45another day.
25:49They're threatening
25:50to publish this article.
25:54Doesn't hold back,
25:55does it?
25:57After everything
25:58I've done for this,
25:59I learn
26:01this is the
26:02the thanks I receive.
26:04The thanks I receive.
26:04And the fact that
26:05Anton Bucetti
26:06is sharpening the knives
26:07was of no surprise to me.
26:10You and he have history?
26:13Because I have no respect
26:15for his gossip-mongering rag.
26:17This isn't journalism.
26:19This is
26:20attention-rabbing rhetoric.
26:25What?
26:30This island petitioned
26:32petitioned to get you
26:32your job back.
26:34And you walked away
26:35without any explanation,
26:37like you didn't care.
26:38And now,
26:39months later,
26:40you come back
26:41as if nothing happened.
26:43I do care.
26:45You know that.
26:47But others don't.
26:49All they know
26:51is that their
26:52commissioner of police
26:53abandoned them.
26:56It's up to you
26:57to change their minds.
27:00Oh, my eyes won't stop
27:02singing, man.
27:03Tell me about it.
27:04The sun should go down
27:05into my trousers.
27:09I'm telling you,
27:10Mervyn,
27:11there's hot sauce in places.
27:12Hot sauce is not
27:13supposed to go,
27:13Mervyn, man.
27:22That's what mighty
27:23fiery sauce
27:24has been cooking up.
27:26Look at us.
27:27We're covered in this stuff.
27:29Like a couple
27:30of chicken wings.
27:34Oh.
27:47You're a
27:48a liability soul.
27:51You know that.
27:53My life has been
27:55turned upside down
27:56since you came into it.
27:57Yeah, I kind of
27:58have that effect.
28:02I can't live like that, man.
28:07I'm a detective inspector.
28:09Do you understand that?
28:13And I need my clothes back.
28:15And I need to not be
28:17chasing around after you.
28:21This is not how I...
28:31I'm sorry, man.
28:42I need my clothes
28:42to fight.
28:42Oh.
29:10Oh, hey, sir.
29:13Yeah, all right, there, you same boat?
29:15Yeah, just, um, yeah.
29:17What are you doing there?
29:18Been having drinks with a friend from Jamaica.
29:21I was just on my way home when I see the lights are on,
29:24and I realise Officer Rose is working late.
29:27Why is Officer Rose working late? I'm asking myself.
29:31Yeah, just, um, going through these tapes.
29:36Still.
29:37Yeah.
29:37Still on these tapes.
29:41And which one you're on now, then?
29:43Tape...
29:44Tape number two.
29:47Two. Tape two. Is that all?
29:49I'm sorry, Sarge. It's just every time I start listening,
29:53my mind just wanders somewhere else.
29:55Then I start thinking about other things.
29:57So then I rewind the tape to the beginning,
30:00but then the same thing happens all over again.
30:03It's...
30:07It's just my brain, you know?
30:11Can get a bit fidgety sometimes.
30:13Like, I know what I'm meant to be doing,
30:16and I intentionally try to do it,
30:18but my mind just does its own a thing.
30:23I just want to finish this.
30:28Hmm.
30:30All right.
30:31How about...
30:33we go through this together?
30:35You and me.
30:37You sure, Sarge?
30:39I know.
30:40If it was me here needing assistance,
30:42you would do exactly the same thing.
30:45Right?
30:48No.
30:51I'm just joking.
30:52Of course I would.
30:52No question.
30:54So there you go, then.
30:57All right.
30:58Let's do this thing.
31:03My boy.
31:06So,
31:07you have a good time with your friend?
31:08Oh, it was cool, you know.
31:10Yeah?
31:11Nice to hear all the gossip going on back in Kingston.
31:16You know, you never did tell me why you left Jamaica.
31:25I left
31:27because of a guy
31:28I was seeing.
31:31Things got complicated
31:33between us
31:34and, um,
31:38I just realized
31:39the best thing that I could do
31:43was just to turn
31:44and walk away.
31:47Hmm.
31:51Hmm.
31:52I know.
32:05Hmm.
32:08Hmm.
32:09Hmm.
32:12Hmm.
32:26Good morning, Isaac.
32:28Good morning.
32:30Good morning, Clarence.
32:31Good morning.
32:33How was the catch this one?
32:35So, so.
32:36So, so.
32:36Let me look.
32:37Let me look.
32:37Let me see.
32:38Take two.
32:39Okay.
32:39I want that one there.
32:41That big one.
32:42On this one.
32:46Good morning, Sarge.
32:47Morning.
32:48Morning.
32:51Inspector.
32:53I'm here.
32:55We got your message.
33:05So, I was doing a bit of nosing around the old place and, uh, bingo.
33:10Literally.
33:10Oh, so that's where it came from.
33:12Yeah, apparently this place used to be a resort for the over-sixties.
33:15So, this must have been here since then.
33:17Okay.
33:18So, how do you explain one of those bingo balls ending up on the same beach as our crime scene?
33:24Well, it didn't magic itself there, did it?
33:27Somebody must have taken it from this.
33:29So, we're going to have to dust it for prints.
33:31I could do that for you, sir.
33:33Oh, nice one.
33:36How about you two?
33:37You got something?
33:38So, the tapes Cara Mayhew recorded over the last week, there was ten hours of it.
33:44And throughout it all, when she talks about Alistair and Margot Hartnell, she doesn't once mention they lost a daughter.
33:50She was only 17.
33:53Seems their marriage has been struggling ever since.
33:58Which was kind of odd, right?
34:00So, we did some digging.
34:02Their daughter Charlotte was killed in a car accident, a hit and run.
34:06But the person who did it was never found.
34:08All that was known was that it was a female driver.
34:12Only, the hit and run happened outside the family home in Islington.
34:17Cara Mayhew's practice was just over a mile away.
34:22Also, it happened on the 1st of April, 2021.
34:25And Cara Mayhew, she moved over here six weeks later.
34:29Is it possible that that's what it was?
34:32Cara was behind a car accident.
34:37That's good work.
34:38A pair of you.
34:39Well done.
34:40You go and get that dusted and we'll go and talk to the Hartnells.
34:46So, who's going to hold this there?
34:49We didn't come here because we suspected Cara Mayhew was a woman who killed our daughter.
34:54We came in a last-ditch attempt to save our marriage.
34:57Truly, we did.
34:59Then, why did you never mention to Miss Mayhew the fact that you lost your daughter?
35:03By your own admission, your relationship problem started five years ago at the same time.
35:11We didn't talk about it with her.
35:14Because we never talk about it.
35:16It's easier if we don't.
35:18Margot tries, bless her, or used to, you know, to try to get me to open up, but I just
35:24can't bear it.
35:28I don't want to lose her.
35:29I want to fix our marriage, but I can't if I have to churn all that up again.
35:37I'm just not strong enough.
35:39It's all right, my love.
35:51If the Hartnells didn't come here for revenge, then the question still remains.
35:55Why did Cara Mayhew leave London five years ago?
35:57What happened to make her suddenly up sticks and move to the other side of the world?
36:00Well, please give me a call when you get this.
36:04Just, just let me know you're okay.
36:10So, it's Stacey.
36:12I think she's had a meltdown.
36:14I haven't seen her since yesterday.
36:17I think she knew.
36:18I think Cara told her about me and her sister.
36:24Mishnah, everything all right?
36:27We'll look into it.
36:42I saw she was upset, crying.
36:45So, I went over.
36:47As soon as she said she was staying at the conference retreat, I called you.
36:52Couldn't get much from her.
36:54Except, she didn't want me to phone her husband.
36:58Well, that's hardly surprising.
37:02Uh, sir, um, maybe I should take this one?
37:20Everyone knows, don't they?
37:22Only us.
37:24May I?
37:31Can you tell me when you found out, Mrs. Warbur?
37:37Thursday night.
37:38I went to get some air on the beach and Cara was there.
37:42She'd been drinking.
37:44She'd not seen it like that.
37:45She'd always been so composed.
37:47She'd hardly stand up, so I helped her back to her bungalow.
37:52She was sort of rambling.
37:54Talking about some guy who had betrayed her back in England before she moved here.
37:59I'd been cheating on her.
38:01I got her home and put her on the couch.
38:04And she looked me in the eyes and spoke to me.
38:07Stacey.
38:08Like it really mattered.
38:09Don't be like me.
38:11Don't be, Stacey.
38:12There was just something in the way she'd said it.
38:16Then I knew she'd had a one-to-one session with Luke that day and maybe whatever he'd said had,
38:20like, triggered her.
38:22It reminded her of her own betrayal.
38:24That's why she was drunk.
38:27So, when she was asleep, I saw her notebook.
38:34I felt sick.
38:36Couldn't even process it.
38:39Couldn't even breathe.
38:41So, I just pretended I didn't know.
38:45Stacey, you've been through a lot in the last couple of days.
38:51If you were in denial, if Kira was pressing you to confront what you'd found out...
38:58No. No, I didn't.
39:00I admit there was all this pent-up stuff inside me, but I didn't kill Kira.
39:05I swear.
39:14Alright.
39:16Well, thank you for talking with me, Mr. Shaw.
39:19What did the ex-boyfriend have to say for himself?
39:21The ex-fiancée.
39:23The affair he was having had been going on for three whole years behind Kira's back when she found out.
39:30Wow. That must have flawed her.
39:32I mean, her job is to provide relationship advice,
39:34and all the time she was blind to a three-year-long deception.
39:38Explains why she suddenly upped and left for another country.
39:41And why Luke's betrayal triggered her so much.
39:44And why she had one or three over the limit.
39:46But, it still doesn't explain why she was murdered three nights ago.
39:52Inspector Diaz-Thomas, I think we got something.
40:02Patrick Campbell, therapist, consultation fee, $150.
40:08He's based in Guadalupe.
40:10Specializes in hypnotherapy.
40:12Kira called him Friday afternoon, asking for advice.
40:16He offered to share their conversation as part of our investigation.
40:20On what?
40:22She said a client of hers, Margot Hartnell, had just opened up to her,
40:26and was struggling with the memory of an event of her recent past.
40:29Because she had completely blocked it out.
40:31Which, apparently, is not uncommon for people dealing with traumatic experiences.
40:35And according to Mr. Campbell,
40:37it's a pretty unorthodox approach for Kira to resort to hypnotherapy so early on in the process.
40:43But, she was convinced it was necessary.
40:46So, this forgotten memory, do we know what it's to do with?
40:49The night their daughter was killed in a hit and run five years ago.
40:53Mrs. Hartnell does not remember a thing about it.
40:57But, ever since, she's been growing this feeling of guilt.
41:01You know?
41:02Like, maybe she might have done something bad that night.
41:07Wait.
41:08You don't mean...
41:11All that was known was that it was a female driver.
41:15Well, Mrs. Hartnell wanted it all off the record.
41:19That's why there was nothing in her notes or recordings.
41:23Right.
41:24We need to talk to Mrs. Hartnell and that therapist.
41:26We need him here sharpish.
41:28Come on.
41:30Well, at first, it was just guilt, I felt.
41:33Our grief counsellor said it was normal as a parent to feel a sense of responsibility.
41:39Look, whatever I did five years ago, I want the truth to come out.
41:42If you think I killed Kira Mayhew because I wanted to stop that happening, you're wrong.
41:47She arranged for me to have hypnotherapy today.
41:50Well, that can still happen, Mrs. Hartnell.
41:53We've arranged for a hypnotherapist to speak with you, if you feel you're able.
41:59Inspector.
42:01Inspector.
42:01If you wouldn't mind going with Sergeant Fletcher.
42:04Yeah.
42:09I guess all we can do now is wait.
42:17Ah.
42:18We're back to the bingo ball.
42:20Inspector.
42:21Sarge.
42:23Just got back from dusting off the bingo ball machine for prints.
42:27Unfortunately, nothing.
42:34What's up with the inspector?
42:36Am I all right?
42:40Inspector.
42:41Everything all right, sir?
42:42You've got something?
42:46Sir, what are you doing?
42:50It's a little experiment.
42:52The bingo balls float.
43:08The bingo ball floats.
43:11Yeah.
43:13Okay.
43:14So, why take it out of the bingo ball cage thingy and bring it to the sea, to the water's
43:21edge?
43:22Was it just to see if it floats?
43:25Or, maybe it's to see where it goes?
43:33In which case...
43:35So, how did one of them manage to leave the dinner table, run down to the beach, somehow
43:39get themselves 100 metres out to sea, drown Keira Mayhew?
43:43None of them left the table for more than two to three minutes at a time.
43:47And was that a regular thing, or going for a swim at that time?
43:51Like, most evenings.
43:53She said Keira seemed distracted.
44:00Of course!
44:02That's why you were there, you little beauty!
44:05Mwah!
44:09Okay, I need to speak to a fisherman, or an oceanographer, ologist type of person.
44:14Basically, anyone who knows the currents in this bay.
44:16T.S. Thomas, I need a toxicology report done on Keira Mayhew.
44:20Officer Rose, I need you to collect some evidence from her office.
44:23But, you know who did it?
44:25I do.
44:26And I know how they managed to drown Keira Mayhew 100 metres out to sea,
44:31without even stepping a foot in the water.
44:33Come on!
44:38For those wondering why Margot Hartnell isn't here with us,
44:42it's because she's currently with a hypnotherapist.
44:45Doing what she was always supposed to be doing today.
44:47Trying to recover a buried memory of what really happened five years ago.
44:52The night her daughter died.
44:55Why am I telling you this?
44:57Because Margot's therapy sessions were meant to be conducted by Keira Mayhew.
45:03Until somebody tried to stop the truth from coming out.
45:05By murdering her.
45:08Mr Hartnell.
45:13Me?
45:14I did no such thing.
45:16Oh.
45:16Oh, but you did.
45:17I know you did.
45:19But how?
45:19I was at dinner when it happened.
45:21On dry bloody land.
45:23Yeah, you were.
45:24Which is why it was so clever of you.
45:26But now that I've got a better understanding of what's going on,
45:29I believe you created a small window of opportunity in which to commit murder.
45:34But not 100 metres out at sea.
45:37You drowned Keira Mayhew right outside your own bungalow.
45:43Because from the very start of this case, we've worked on the assumption that as Miss Mayhew's body was discovered
45:49100 metres out at sea in a straight line from where she swam.
45:54That's where she was drowned.
45:56But what if actually, when Miss Mayhew went for her evening dip, she preferred to swim along the shore rather
46:04than out from it?
46:06That would mean she'd have to swim past your bungalow farther along the beach.
46:12And that would give you opportunity to commit murder.
46:17But when?
46:18I told you I was at dinner when it happened.
46:21Yeah, we have security camera footage that shows you leaving the dinner table to get your glasses at 18 minutes
46:28past seven.
46:29I was gone, what, a couple of minutes, three minutes at the most.
46:33You're not seriously suggesting I was able to physically drown a fit and healthy woman in that time without getting
46:40soaked in water?
46:41Yeah, sounds impossible, right?
46:44But I don't think Miss Mayhew was as fit and healthy as she might normally be.
46:49I believe you sedated her.
46:53We know that your wife uses sleeping pills.
46:56None of us been to bed.
46:57None of us took a sleeping pill.
47:00And we also know that you are the last person to have a one-to-one session with Miss Mayhew
47:04that day at 5pm.
47:06One-to-one sessions in the afternoon with Stacey Warbur, then Alistair Hartnell.
47:12And while there, we believe you spiked her drink when she wasn't looking.
47:21We didn't believe Kira was drugged because the finger marks on her neck suggested she was held down by force
47:27and drowned.
47:27We're awaiting the toxicology report and results from the glass Kira drank from.
47:33And I've no doubt we'll get confirmation that there were significant traces of sleeping pills in her system.
47:39And so, while Miss Mayhew was swimming, she suddenly felt drowsy and swam ashore.
47:48When you returned to your bungalow under the pretense of getting your glasses, you ran down to the beach where
47:55Miss Mayhew was lying unconscious on the sand.
47:57And then you did two things. First, you grabbed her neck and shoulders, making sure to leave bruises so it
48:06would look like someone had strangled her and forced her under the water.
48:10Before moving her into the sea, for her to be carried away, making sure that she was face down, so
48:19that still unconscious, her lungs would fill with water.
48:22It took less than a minute.
48:25All you had to do now was hurry back to the dinner table and leave Kira to drown and let
48:31the sea do the rest of the work for you.
48:35We checked with a local oceanologist at the university, and the current in this bay moves in a north-westerly
48:43direction, which means it would have carried Miss Mayhew's body diagonally, taking her from your bungalow here to where her
48:52body was discovered here.
48:54And with her clothes being left on the beach here, we'd all assume she swam in a straight line.
49:02Now, you had no idea where the currents would take Kira's body. So, you had to test it first, didn't
49:09you?
49:11You went and found this. And you threw it into the sea to observe which route it took, which was
49:18conveniently in a north-westerly direction, from your bungalow directly to where Kira began her nightly swim.
49:24And that's when your plan finally came together. Kira's body was found still at sea, not long after she drowned.
49:32But this ball, left overnight, ended up washing up ashore. And that was your undoing.
49:38But why would he do this to her?
49:41Because he didn't want Kira to help his wife remember.
49:45Well, remember what?
49:46What he did.
49:54I remember, Amister.
49:58I remember all of it.
50:02All the horror of it.
50:05You rushing in and telling me someone had hurt our little girl.
50:11And I remember the ambulance.
50:14And the police.
50:16And the shock and the pain.
50:20And I remember you coming in.
50:24And holding me and tears shaking.
50:29When it was heartbroken.
50:35And I remember.
50:36And I remember, in that moment, the smell of alcohol on your breath.
50:45And I remember coming back inside.
50:51And seeing you.
50:58I checked the original case file, Mr Hartnell.
51:02And the phone call to the police, in which the hit-and-run driver was described as female,
51:07came from an anonymous caller.
51:11That was you, wasn't it?
51:13Trying to direct suspicion away from yourself.
51:23I would have lost everything.
51:33Alistair Hartnell.
51:35I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Kira Mayhew.
51:38You do not have to say anything.
51:40But it may harm your defence if you do not mention, when questioned,
51:43something you later rely on in court.
51:58I never want to see you ever again.
52:16Well, well, well.
52:18Good evening to you both.
52:20Good evening.
52:21Catherine, we spoke at Marian Edwards' charity barbecue, I think.
52:25I don't remember.
52:27I certainly enjoyed our little chat.
52:32Commissioner, can I get you a rum?
52:33That won't be necessary.
52:35This won't take that long.
52:36I think I'll have one.
52:38And Catherine, if you wouldn't mind.
52:41I appreciate you giving me an advance copy of the article.
52:46Here is my written statement in response.
52:51Saying?
52:53I agree with every single word you've written.
53:00Sorry?
53:01After receiving some sage advice from my good friend here,
53:05as I say in my statement, it hurt to think that the bond I had forged with this island had
53:13been broken.
53:13But the circumstances were of my own making.
53:17So, I will be the one to fix it.
53:21And how will you do that?
53:22As of tomorrow, I will be commencing an initiative with my team.
53:27And with a little help from the island's mayor.
53:30An initiative to strengthen our relationship with the community.
53:36So, if you'll excuse me, I have work to do.
53:39Good evening.
53:44Well, he just killed my article, didn't he?
53:49With one single shot.
53:52I think he maybe just has.
53:57Enjoy your evening.
54:32Sorry, mate. That's my hat.
54:54Hey, so.
54:56Look, I just got home and I saw you brought all my stuff back.
55:01Oh, you know.
55:03Worked the old Solomon Clark magic.
55:05Yeah, well, I just wanted to say thank you.
55:08Did you have to give Myrtle the money back?
55:10I mean, you're not in debt still, are you?
55:12Ah, don't worry yourself.
55:14Anyway, man.
55:15Got to get the boat back to Antigua.
55:17Got some business over there that needs attending, huh?
55:20Of course you have.
55:21I mean, there's always something going on in Solomonland, right?
55:25You said it.
55:29Um, look.
55:32What about us now?
55:35I mean, what do we do next?
55:39I don't know, man.
55:40Like you said, I am troubled.
55:43A detective doesn't need that in his life.
55:45So, I didn't mean...
55:47Maybe I shouldn't have...
55:49Said, Dan...
55:50No disrespect to you, bro, but...
55:53Ain't much good to me having a police officer around.
55:57Got a reputation to keep.
55:58Yeah, yeah, no, I...
56:00Tell me I understand.
56:03Look, man.
56:05We tried this and...
56:08Maybe it just wasn't meant to be here, no?
56:10Look after yourself, brother.
56:12Yeah, you did.
56:14Look, Solomon.
56:19I...
56:30I...
56:40Look.
56:41Look.
56:42Let's go, bro.
56:42Go, be, go.
56:43Go, bro.
56:44Go, bro.
56:47Go, bro.
56:49Rana
56:52I saw you passing by
56:57Hello, neighbor. Quiet morning.
57:00Was.
57:01Henry Ashby moved to St. Marie ten years ago.
57:04Henry was definitely mixed up in something murky.
57:06The victim's copy of this book was missing from his bookshelf.
57:09So, where is it?
57:10I need to reassure you that this island still matters to me.
57:16Why did the detective not bother showing up?
57:18Why was your moped seen outside the victim's villa up in the hills?
57:22Did you ever catch them, Inspector? I'd sleep much better knowing you did.
57:25It wasn't me!
