00:01Previously...
00:01Now we're in on...
00:03Ah, there's some fish out here.
00:05A bit hard seeing everyone else go to work
00:08and you're still sitting at the wharf.
00:09You know, that's just the price you pay with a small boat.
00:12The winter lobster hunting season
00:14has officially kicked off.
00:16What?!
00:17Nothing in it.
00:19Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
00:21It's definitely not a head start on anyone else.
00:24A fleet of young gun lobstermen
00:26are risking it all
00:27in pursuit of the world's most prized
00:29seafood delicacy.
00:31Jock! Yo!
00:33I see someone in the distance.
00:35Honeys, I'm back!
00:38Sounds like that was Mr. Squizzy Taylor.
00:42Price is gonna be angsty now.
00:44He's gonna wanna beat Squizzy.
01:00I think that it's that bold man Squizzy.
01:04Looks like we've got some real competition.
01:07Remember the rule?
01:09I don't know, make way for the bold contender.
01:16The arrival of veteran skipper Squizzy,
01:18Tasmania's top lobstermen,
01:20has sent shockwaves through the young guns fleet.
01:23If you can try and compete with, say,
01:25someone like Squizzy Taylor,
01:26he's a very good fisherman,
01:28it's gonna push you harder to try and catch more fish.
01:31I thought you left a couple of days ago.
01:34So the chieftain and the bold contender
01:36have been rivals for quite some time.
01:38You know, now Squizzy's here,
01:40that's a lot of the same spots that we can't work now.
01:45The young guns thought they had the Southern Ocean all to themselves,
01:49to fight it out, to see who's best.
01:52But now, there's a cat amongst the pigeons.
01:56You should probably rest more, mate.
01:57Just drop anchor and chill out for the night.
01:59I'll look after you, Potts.
02:01Don't get too close, laddie.
02:04Arm throw away's all good, isn't it?
02:05What's the distance? 10 metres?
02:07Nah, s***, two boat lengths.
02:10Jack's boat length, wasn't it?
02:12No, mate, no, no.
02:14Just remember, double rug cutters go pretty well.
02:18This s*** must be jealous of his mouth,
02:20because he can dribble some s***.
02:23Got another boat we're gonna deal with now.
02:25Squizzy's here.
02:28Bloody pain in the arse.
02:30Squizzy's in the area.
02:31So I'm not surprised,
02:32but it looks like it's got a bit more competition.
02:35Not good.
02:37Not good.
02:43Now there's three big boats here.
02:45I think Jack's made the right decision,
02:46and he's going around the coast.
02:48I wouldn't want to be here with the three of us.
02:53Mr. Tattnall, how are you?
02:55Good, buddy. How yourself?
02:56I've come all the way out here.
02:58And lo and behold, not just Miles,
03:01but our friend on the ball contender, mate.
03:06Oh, Squiz?
03:07It's Squiz.
03:09Well, I'm f***ing glad I'm going this way then, mate.
03:11Yeah, that's the joy of bloody going around the corner.
03:14Yeah, it's a long way to go,
03:15but it sounds like a bit less company.
03:17Uh, a lot less company.
03:20Sounds like there's a bit of competition down that way.
03:27Let's set him off.
03:29All baited, ready to go, man.
03:31Yep.
03:35Squizzy's the owner of the 57-foot bold contender.
03:40Yep.
03:44He has 30 years of lobster fishing under his belt,
03:47which means he's a threat to every one of the young guns.
03:52I started when I was 15.
03:54These guys were in nappies or weren't even born.
03:58I'm here to stir them up and keep them on their toes.
04:09Squizzy has earned his place as a legend among Tazzy's lobstermen.
04:13Yeah, baby!
04:16That's a nice-looking pot, that one.
04:20Yeah!
04:21He has an undefeated hunting streak spanning four seasons.
04:27And he's no stranger to crushing the competition.
04:30Yeah!
04:32Loving it!
04:34I enjoy the competition.
04:36It gives me a bit of drive.
04:38I'm not going to let the young guns knock me off my perch just yet.
04:43But Squizzy's no shoo-in to top the tally board this season.
04:47There's been a massive shake-up on the bold contender.
04:51You want to get three pots off, Rhino?
04:54Yep.
04:54So it frees us up to go fishing wherever we want.
04:57Yep.
04:57Fifty pots.
04:58After a decade of working together, Squizzy and deckhand Tabor have gone their separate ways.
05:05We're a little bit behind eight ball with Tabor leaving less than a month ago.
05:09So, new crew on and...
05:12I need to prove myself.
05:15Tabor have put one under each arm and just walked across the deck with them.
05:19That's Tabor, mate.
05:20Yeah, I know.
05:20We're not Tabor.
05:21He's not here no more.
05:22Nah.
05:22You can't just rely on Tabor anymore, mate.
05:24I know.
05:26He's going to be a bloody hard man to replace.
05:29I've hired two new crew to replace him.
05:32That other black one's up the front on this Rhino.
05:35Got Rhino.
05:36He's 47.
05:37Fit as a fiddle.
05:38Maybe not.
05:39But we'll go with fit.
05:41Let's jump in there.
05:43We've got Jesse.
05:44He's 17.
05:45A greenhorn.
05:47He's keen, aren't you?
05:49Stop swearing as much.
05:51I've got a brand new crew.
05:53I've got to teach them.
05:55And on top of that, I've got to catch some fish so they can earn some money.
05:59Must be nearly time to put a fire in her.
06:00Do you want to grab that stern line for us, Jesse?
06:10Cheers!
06:15I don't know if you just want to set that bait down because it might be a bit roly-doly.
06:20Don't want it falling over.
06:22I am feeling nervous about having a new crew on the boat.
06:26We've got to take it step by step and just make sure everyone's safe and everything goes well.
06:32And we've just got to catch some fish too.
06:38Day two.
06:39And this is what the tally board looks like.
06:42The Pira is leading the charge with 112 lobsters.
06:47The Buran has 100 lobsters.
06:52And the Chieftain has 48.
06:55The bold contender is on zero.
07:09Still a few to go.
07:11About 27, I think.
07:14Team Pira is halfway through its day shot.
07:19Miles is determined to stay on top of the tally board.
07:23It's always competition, you know.
07:24You always want to catch more than the other person.
07:28Squizzy's nose is really, really well out here.
07:30So, definitely the one to beat Squizzy.
07:33He's a really good fisherman.
07:35My target for this trip is two tonne.
07:39Squizzy is definitely going to keep me on my toes.
07:42Squizzy is cunning.
07:44He's a very good liar.
07:47A few fish out here.
07:48Looks like just over 40 fattom.
07:52I'll be interested to see how the rest of these ones go.
07:55No.
08:00Ah!
08:01Good lord!
08:04It's a .
08:06It doesn't make any sense why that pot doesn't have any fish in it.
08:09I'm looking at the sounder and it's coming off a nice piece of bottom.
08:15Not good.
08:17Well, that was never going to catch.
08:20Dickhead!
08:22Hey?
08:23What a dickhead!
08:24I didn't bait it!
08:25Oh no!
08:27It's a bit hard to catch crayfish when you don't have any bait in the pots.
08:30Kim should have known better.
08:32There I was kicking myself.
08:34Nah, it kicked me mate, that was me.
08:36I thought I'd clean and miss the bottom, but no, I didn't.
08:41There's no bloody bait in the pot.
08:43It's got a frail curveball in there every now and then, you see.
08:46See if my husband's awake up there.
08:49I backed Timmy to do the solo.
08:51We've had a couple of mistakes.
08:53It will start costing me money if it keeps on happening for sure.
08:57See how this one goes.
08:59Looks like he's got some bait in it.
09:01I'll catch a bit, right?
09:02I don't know.
09:07Yeah, that one works better.
09:11Bloody hell.
09:12See, they seem to work a lot better when you put bait in them.
09:15Would have got six to start out of that, wouldn't you?
09:17Six? Yeah.
09:20Nah, we're going alright, we're going alright.
09:23Just got to remember to bait me pots, don't I?
09:32Yeah.
09:38The plan is to get these pots in the water.
09:41I've only got ten to go.
09:44Give them a six hour soak and hopefully when we come in the pool we find a few fish.
09:51Yeah.
09:54It's eight degrees.
09:56The winds are 20 knots and the southerly swell is a stomach churning five metres.
10:08Nothing worse being seasick.
10:10I know what he feels like.
10:12He's just got to push through it.
10:14It's a horrible feeling and when you're seasick all you want to do is get off the boat and go
10:20to bed.
10:21But guess what?
10:22He's got to work.
10:25When you're white as what he is, pretty well stuffed.
10:29Old mate's going again.
10:33You just got to keep an eye on him.
10:36He's leaning right over the side.
10:37I think he's worried about getting a spew on the boat.
10:40If Jesse doesn't stop vomiting, Squizzy will have a duty of care to motor him home.
10:45And that'll blow any chance the old dog has of taking on the young guns.
10:50Let's hope Jesse comes good because otherwise we are stuffed.
11:01We could be on here, we could be on here.
11:03Yeah!
11:07What do you reckon Brissie?
11:10Ratty.
11:15Bruni Island, Tasmania.
11:17And the Cheektan crew is pulling a day shot.
11:21This trip, we're aiming for two tonne of lobster.
11:26Let's slow down a little bit.
11:27That pot had a few lobsters in it.
11:30This pot, oh my goodness, this pot has a few lobsters in it.
11:37To hit our target of two tonne of lobsters, we really need to get 200 lobsters a day minimum.
11:43At the rate we went this morning, 48, we've got some ground to make up.
11:47We might be back on track.
11:49I think he got five out of that last pot.
11:50If we can get another five out of this, that'd be very, very good.
11:54Go on, mussels.
11:55Oh yeah, that's got some weight in it.
11:59Lockie's on light duties only because he has a medical issue.
12:02The rub on that is that Brice has had to employ two deckies to do the job of one.
12:07And that means double the wages.
12:11This time of year, the crays are really nice and full in their shell.
12:14They've got a nice hard shell as well.
12:16Making the pots really heavy when they're loaded with crays.
12:20You know, he might be injured, but we're not going to ease up on him.
12:23Good thing you don't have the clap.
12:26No, I don't have a clap.
12:29Is that your crab, Lockie? Did that fall out your pants there?
12:32Is that your crab?
12:33Yes, it is.
12:34Actually, it is.
12:35Fire out.
12:36This isn't something I wanted to tell everyone.
12:38But bloody hell, Brice is saying I've got the clap.
12:41He's saying I've got a tentacle.
12:44People need help on this one, Jockles?
12:47No, I don't need help.
12:51Basically, I had to get an ultrasound.
12:52Not because I'm pregnant, but because I've got a cyst on my testicle.
12:56And that's why Jock's out here helping me.
12:59Because I'm in a lot of pain.
13:01But I haven't been showing it.
13:03Because I just want to have fun and be out here and work.
13:06So, yeah, there you go.
13:08The entire world.
13:10You now know about that.
13:12Poor boy.
13:14Very vulnerable.
13:15It's nice for him to open up like that.
13:17And I think it's for the best.
13:19Get out in the open.
13:20Lockie's injured testicle means he's not allowed to lift any heavy pots.
13:24But there's no restriction on sledging.
13:27The whole world knowing about his nuts is probably the least of his problems.
13:34Flick it over, mate, if you want.
13:36For Squizzy, it's all good news.
13:39Jesse's seasickness has eased and shot one is progressing well.
13:46That's what I'm talking about.
13:47Come on, baby.
13:48Oh, yeah.
13:51When it comes to brindles, I think I'm right up there.
13:54I don't want to piss in my own pocket, but I've got a lot more experience on the other guys.
14:00At the end of the day, all fishermen are competitive.
14:03We all want to win.
14:05We all want to have the best shot, catch the most we can.
14:09We've only pulled six pots, but there's a lot of fish in the pots, which is a good sign.
14:13A lot of couple of fives, couple of fours.
14:15You know, we're happy.
14:19Remember the long skinny ones, Rhino?
14:22Not just the big ones.
14:26Yeah, I'm measuring them with a mile measure.
14:28Yeah.
14:30Just checking.
14:31Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
14:36No, he f**k.
14:38I'm working the hardest I have in ten years.
14:41I'm concentrating on what that new crew are doing.
14:44And at the moment, my main job is catching fish.
14:48That's probably taking a little bit backwards step.
14:51You know, Cable was with me for ten years.
14:53We're like a married couple.
14:55I didn't have to worry about him.
14:56He just f**king did it.
14:59Tie him on, Jess. Tie him on so he's ready to go.
15:01Oh, yeah, yeah.
15:06Just got to remind them all the time until they get used to it.
15:12I'm sort of putting too much effort into watching the crew
15:16and I'm forgetting about my job a bit.
15:19Like, I've just missed two marks.
15:21Marks are what? Where I've set pots.
15:23And I've just looked back and the computer hasn't put them in.
15:27Which is not real good because when you go to look for them,
15:31they're not where you've put them.
15:36I've still got to do my job to make sure they earn some money.
15:40But it's taken a bloody toll on me.
15:46Well, this is spinner, spinner, spinner, winner. Chicken dinner.
15:51We'd be averaging a couple of pot at the moment, well and truly.
15:54A poor rod or whatever, but it's just not quite enough.
16:05Why are there no size fish in this pot, Lockie?
16:07That one is, surely.
16:09No, you're measuring them wrong.
16:11Hey, Lockie, just make sure he's measuring them right.
16:14That's what I just said to him.
16:15We don't want to be throwing size fish away.
16:17Just double check he's putting a little bit in the right.
16:19I can't be using the wrong side of the measure
16:21because that's only going to make things worse.
16:23That's going to make things better.
16:24And if he's not putting it inside the little hole, then...
16:27What if he's going above going, like, above the thing?
16:29Oh.
16:30Then you lose that much.
16:33Guys, guys, come on.
16:34If you measure them wrong,
16:36then we all suffer because no-one gets a pay
16:38because he's throwing away size fish.
16:41Bryce wanted a minimum of 100 lobsters a shot.
16:46Shot two has landed him 92,
16:49taking his total to 146,
16:53well short of his 200 target.
16:56There's now three big boats fishing the same ledges,
16:59the same area, and guess what?
17:01We're the last one out here,
17:02the last one to put our gear in.
17:03Now I've got to figure out where everyone else's gear is,
17:06where I'm going to shoot, and what bottom's left.
17:12Hi, man, what's up?
17:13Um, question.
17:14Just...
17:15I've just pulled up to the west side of the hand,
17:18you know, that little lump there.
17:20Oh, big lump.
17:21Are you, like, on the f***ing top of it,
17:24or you're all over the show on it, or...?
17:27Yeah, I've got a few there.
17:29That's sort of where I was mainly sort of wanting to go.
17:32I'm annoyed.
17:33I've got a whole other variable now.
17:35Like, I'm trying to focus on catching fish,
17:38and now I've got to deal with Bryce fishing right next to me.
17:41He's just absolutely a pain in the arse.
17:44Is anyone out to the east of the Fries?
17:46No.
17:47No one's out there, so we're just all sort of west,
17:50like, on the main hand, and then west.
17:53All right, I'll go over there, then.
17:54I'll leave you guys away.
17:56Bryce has fallen for the oldest trick in the book,
18:00misdirection.
18:01He's in for a nasty shock.
18:06Oh!
18:08I'm already thrown out.
18:08Go, John!
18:09Go, John!
18:13Go, John!
18:14Vamos out there.
18:18It's raining, it's pouring.
18:20The old man was snoring.
18:24Some gear.
18:26Drama!
18:26I knew it!
18:27I told you!
18:28Pull in your !
18:28I told you!
18:31what's the !
18:33Oh my God! I've just come across people's gear where everyone said it wasn't, so I'm
18:42now going to go look at whose gear it is, because that'll tell me whether or not there's
18:47much of it. Squizzy will spread his gear out, Miles does the same, but looking at the floats,
18:58that's... Squizzy! It's the bold contender. Yeah, it's the bold f***ing tender. F***ing great.
19:16The fryers and Bryce is sitting his pots, or at least he's trying to.
19:25Squizzy's gear's here. I'm now going to have to shoot my gear over about nine miles worth
19:29of bottom. I'm going to have to spread it between where Miles said he was, all the way through
19:33to where Squizzy is. F***ing bumble f***ing keys here as well. F***! No!
19:52F***ing gear's here too! Oh my God! Can't have any piece of bottom to myself. We just got
20:04to a fourth piece of bottom, and Squizzy's gear is here as well. So we've travelled multiple
20:11miles, and the entire time just come across his bottom. Squizzy has a big arse.
20:28There's plenty of other areas I can shoot, but I just would like to shoot just like he has,
20:34very particular pieces that let us know what's happening. We know that this area here is going
20:39to be going because this piece here is good, so that's good. The next piece, the next piece.
20:44Miles would be doing the same. He would have a little bit here, a little bit there. So you've got
20:49three big boats spreading the gear out over like ten mile. It's a lot of ground covered.
20:59Hey Squizzy, you on seven two? Yeah, roger. You've stolen all my spots that I don't own
21:05and can't claim, but you got here first. That's right. I left Miles alone because I felt,
21:12I'll give him some space. I'll get out of here and it's like all your gear's here and
21:15only a little bit to the west, so he's tricked me. He got me good.
21:22Oh no. Fair play to Miles. He defended his little piece of bottom.
21:26Yeah, thanks Miles for sending Bryce my way. Awesome. Awesome job, mate. Thank you.
21:35Any time. Our timer for our day shot, it's ticking. We're down for the last few seconds
21:43really. We have to get these pots in the water now. The crew of the Buran is drama free.
21:5429 year old Jack is targeting inshore lobsters. The same thing his old man used to do. He's
22:00a long way away from the rest of the fleet. If it wasn't for my father, like I wouldn't
22:07be great fishing right now. I wouldn't have wouldn't have bought a boat or anything like
22:11that. When I finished school, I started fishing with my old man on deck. It gave me a bit
22:16of a head start to get my skipper career off the ground. Lobster boats cost upwards of $150,000,
22:23with monthly running costs averaging around $15,000. On top of that, you've got mandatory
22:30fishing licenses and quota costs, which is the cost of the right to actually catch lobsters.
22:36The more lobsters you want to catch, the more quota you have to lease.
22:42It's sad. There's some families that have been cray fishing for generations and generations,
22:48and the next generation may not do it.
22:52the more you have to do it.
23:00Hey Jack, how you going? Good buddy, yourself? Good, good. I thought, you know what, I'll
23:06give Miles a bit of room. I'll, you know, I haven't seen him out here for a while and
23:09I'll get out here, steam that extra 40 minutes, waste extra fuel. Lo and behold, bold contender
23:16gear. It's Squiz.
23:18You got the jump on you. And then I thought, I'll steam past his gear and I'll shoot again.
23:22Got to the next one. Hey look, Squiz. Seven and a half mile of gear later, we finally got
23:27him in. And even when I finished shooting me pots, next to Squiz.
23:32That you're supposed to go shooting through anyone again. You'll be shot like last year.
23:35No, that's fine. I can put up with a few holes now.
23:38I think that the reputation you're getting, being a cheeky little prick, isn't going to
23:44be a good reputation to have.
23:46Mate, this is first in best trash to ever get to his first in it.
23:50Last season, Bryce broke a cardinal rule with the sea.
23:54What was that, Squiz? Shoot in front of Glen. Oh, alright.
23:59Never drop your pots on top of someone else's.
24:03What the f*** are you doing, mate? What the f*** are you doing?
24:07I've never fished around Bryce before, but if he does that to other people, he'll f*** it.
24:11He'll get his head belted in and he'll f*** it shot.
24:22You there, Bryce?
24:25Yo.
24:26Yeah, what are you doing now? Are you pulling or setting or what are you doing?
24:33F***, thank you.
24:34Ah, setting him back.
24:35Squizzy needs to pay attention to where he's shooting his pots, not what other people are doing.
24:39Ah, setting him back, what's that?
24:41No, it's one of them.
24:43Dodge, dodge.
24:45I've said something about me.
24:46F***.
24:47Anyone that fishes around Squizzy, they know straight away whether he's on fish or not.
24:52Because if he's there, and the pots don't move, they're the same places every day, he's on fish.
24:57Yeah, no worries, no worries.
24:59You haven't even gone up to your northern ones yet, have you?
25:02No, I'm heading north now.
25:08No worries then, we'll talk to you shortly.
25:13He's setting pots back.
25:16Let's set them off.
25:18I'm not going to let Bryce steamroll me.
25:20He's a young gun, he's cocky.
25:23I'm just going to set these pots back straight away.
25:26If a fisherman really wants to claim bottom, the best thing you do is pull a few pots and then
25:30shoot them straight back in exactly where they were.
25:32What Squizzy's really good at is making sure that it never looks like there's room.
25:36It's always taken.
25:41So what does that mean?
25:42That means it's a race.
25:45At the end of the day, it's every man for himself.
25:47And if we have to tread on a few toes at the same time, I don't mind.
25:55Yep.
25:59What's it going?
26:01Showing him?
26:01I'm shooting.
26:04Right in front of Squizzy.
26:05The race is on south of Bruni Island.
26:09It's Bryce versus Squizzy to see who can secure the best lobster ground.
26:14So we're throwing half the gear in now because we've got a lot of competition around us.
26:20Yep.
26:23Squizzy's shooting gear in already.
26:24And we need to claim some knife bottom.
26:29Come on, Lockstar!
26:30You worry about that pot, not me.
26:32I'm f***ing worried about it, mate.
26:34I'm so worried.
26:35I'm paranoid about that pot.
26:37I can imagine he's going to want to shoot these quick.
26:42You know, when it comes to the rule book of shooting close to people, shooting near people, that sort of
26:45thing, I still throw that out the window.
26:50Bryce's way, he's just over there. He's only about a mile away.
26:54He's moving in on our territory, man!
27:03Cheeky dog!
27:11Bryce is trying to push me out of this area, but I don't think so.
27:16Yep!
27:17Did you say yeah?
27:17Yep!
27:21Under pressure.
27:22Hurry up. Come on.
27:24We're in a little bit of a rush.
27:26Quick.
27:27Yep!
27:30How long have we got?
27:31Having to go.
27:33I don't know yet.
27:34See how much room we've got.
27:36Squeezy's going to have very good pots here.
27:39So he might be a little pissed off that he doesn't get this little shallow lump.
27:44Because if they're running down on the ledges, then tonight they're not run up.
27:48So we don't know until we try.
27:50All right?
27:53Right in front of him there.
27:55You're not causing issues, are you, Bryce?
27:59At the end of the day, all three of the big boats run separate businesses.
28:03We're not conjoined in any way, shape or form.
28:05It's every man for himself.
28:07We're here to catch lobster, we're here to pay the bills, and we're here to make money.
28:15I can't believe the audacity of that rabbit's rice.
28:18That's how he is.
28:19That's how he is.
28:22It miles the bottom here.
28:24I know.
28:24I wouldn't.
28:25I'll move off.
28:26Yeah.
28:27And there's bottom here everywhere.
28:29Yeah.
28:30You've got to go and find your own.
28:32You're going to touch the hole.
28:35That's a respect thing, isn't it?
28:37This bloke just does not learn.
28:39When you're disrespectful like Bryce does, he moves in on you, doesn't give you enough room,
28:44it comes back to bite you on the arse.
28:53Yep.
28:55Squeezy's day shot numbers are looking super healthy.
29:00Time for a quick duty of care check on Jesse.
29:04Hey Jesse.
29:05Yo.
29:06How you feeling?
29:07Yeah, alright.
29:08You want a cup of noodles?
29:10Nah.
29:10Nah, not well enough to eat, but...
29:12Get the water up to you then?
29:13Yeah.
29:14Yeah.
29:15I don't think it's a big deal.
29:17You're only throwing up.
29:20They don't make kids like that much anymore.
29:24Like, he was seasick spewed early this morning, he's had nothing to eat all day.
29:30And look at him, works like a Trojan.
29:31I admire that.
29:33I've seen 30-year-old men not work as good as what he does.
29:37Come out here and just fall apart.
29:40I'm gonna try and keep this one.
29:45Squeeze.
29:46Stop.
29:49What happened?
29:50I think there was a buoy hooked up in your propeller.
29:52Is it?
29:56Is there one there or not?
29:57Yeah.
29:57It's tangled.
29:58Up back.
30:00F***ing O's.
30:02Ran over one of Bryce's pots.
30:03This is what you don't want to happen.
30:05Running over someone else's pot, this is bloody dangerous.
30:10F***ing O's.
30:10The worst case scenario is, I can pull that pot off the bottom and wrap it in my propeller and
30:16make it us dead in the water.
30:19F***ing O's.
30:24It's right in the propeller, I think, man. It's right there.
30:27F***ing great. Go out the other side. Sit on the other side.
30:30Nah, nothing.
30:32F***ing O's.
30:34I'm just gonna give this motor some revs and cut this pot off because the bowl contender's got rug cutters.
30:44F***ing O's.
30:45Try and grapple them flugs.
30:47Okay.
30:48Try and grapple them flugs. Just a little...
30:54F***ing O's.
30:55F***ing O's.
30:59F***ing O's.
31:02F***ing O's.
31:05F***ing O's.
31:06Is that rope still on there?
31:11F***ing O's.
31:11At the end of the day, this is what happens when you shoot too close to someone.
31:15I've got a new crew.
31:16Now I've got to watch what Bryce is bloody doing on top of that.
31:20Off.
31:21There you go.
31:24Kick her off.
31:27So, yeah, we just ran over one of Bryce's pots.
31:30Got it off, though. Pot's still there.
31:33So that's lucky.
31:34We're lucky this wasn't more serious.
31:39You there, Bryce?
31:42Yeah.
31:43I, um, just ran one of your pots over.
31:47Accidentally.
31:48Not on purpose.
31:50Oh, it's a shame of working close with each other, isn't it, really?
31:53Yeah, well, you've got to give blokes room, mate.
31:56Otherwise, that's what happens.
31:59Yeah, but that's night bottom.
32:01That's good.
32:01You've got to claim that night bottom.
32:03No worries, then.
32:05I've just been friendly, letting you know.
32:07I could definitely, um, fill Squizzy's frustration.
32:10Well, we'll keep more of an eye out next time.
32:13If I do it on purpose, I'll still let you know.
32:17No, I appreciate that. Thank you.
32:19Bryce is lucky Squizzy didn't just cut the line to the float
32:23and kill the lobster pot.
32:25Look at Miles.
32:27He's given me enough room.
32:28I don't go near him.
32:30He doesn't go near me.
32:31That's, that's called respect.
32:33Same shit, different day out here.
32:37When you get two boats like that,
32:41fighting over the same bit of ground, but I was here first,
32:45that's what happens.
32:46Stuff like that.
32:47I said, I wouldn't do what he just did,
32:50but that's, that's Bryce.
32:52He's known for it.
32:54I don't have to say much more, really, do I?
32:57Hey!
33:01Yeah.
33:01Is that Bryce skid just here in front of us?
33:04Yeah.
33:04And just here?
33:05Yeah.
33:06All over us.
33:08This is why you end up running the people's gear over,
33:11because they've f***ing got pots right offside doors.
33:19This is our time to shine.
33:22Bring in those snappy little reds.
33:26Jack and Johnny have finally arrived at Port Davie.
33:32I've had some ripper shots here,
33:34and I've had some absolute shockers.
33:36So to get the big reds that we're after,
33:38we've got to get the boat in tight,
33:40we've got to get in there and get next to the rocks.
33:42It's a high-risk, high-reward strategy.
33:45He's the only young gun fishing in close.
33:48It's going to adjust them lights.
33:52Just sort of trying to get the positioning right on them.
33:55Sort of wanting to be able to see what you're doing
33:58when you're getting in close around the rocks in the dark.
34:03So, give that a try.
34:06It took quite a few years for me to get the confidence
34:08to be able to do this sort of stuff in the dark.
34:10I definitely prefer doing it in the daytime.
34:14Yep.
34:19You see, a lot of the rocks around this area,
34:21you know, are real spiky and jagged.
34:23So, ideally, you don't want to hit any, but...
34:25You wait until it's daylight.
34:28The first couple of trips, I was shitting myself.
34:30Like, really close.
34:32The Port Davie coastline
34:33is littered with razor-sharp ridges of quartzite.
34:37Right on, Johnny.
34:37Hit just one rock and it's lobster boat down.
34:42F***ing beautiful.
34:46Wow.
34:47We hit a rock.
34:48The area we are, the rocks here are razor-sharp.
34:50We don't want to punch a hole in the boat.
34:53The west coast of Tasmania is not the place
34:55where you want anything to go wrong.
34:57You know, we're a long way from help.
34:58Waiting an hour for the Westpac rescue chopper
35:00to get to where you are.
35:02It's not the place where you want to come unstuck.
35:08Sort of get a couple of pots down the inside of this one
35:10and not really many people touch it.
35:13So, hopefully, she's a bit fresher for us.
35:19Don't try this one at home, kids.
35:23All right.
35:31When it comes to crayfishing, especially on the west coast,
35:34I don't have a bit of confidence in your bait.
35:35They scare me in rocks around here
35:37because, like, they're f***ing pointy.
35:39Yeah, yeah. They're f***ing big.
35:42I went in where Jack goes, in shallow water.
35:45I'd have to change my undies all the time.
35:47I'd have to buy 50 f***ing pairs of undies just to go fishing.
35:51I'd s*** meself.
36:01Just caught our, uh, our last pop of the day.
36:078pm.
36:07And the Pira crew is working hard to stay on top of the leaderboard.
36:12That one's got bait.
36:13Oh, well, that's pretty s***.
36:15We didn't catch anything out of the last pop of the day.
36:18Um, that's the first blank for the day, too.
36:21Other than the one Tim got the good bait in.
36:24So, hopefully, the good numbers continue.
36:28See how they're black under the tail?
36:30That means they're getting rid of the shell.
36:32They're at the heaviest point at this stage.
36:35Probably about a kilo, that fish.
36:37You know, the reasonable size is down here.
36:39So, we ended up with, um, 163 today for the day shot.
36:43So, no, we're pretty happy about that.
36:44But we always want more.
36:45So, hopefully, we can, um, move all the pots onto the good spots tomorrow
36:50and, yeah, catch a few more.
36:53All eyes are on Miles.
36:55The Pira holds the top spot on the tally board.
36:59The bold contenders next with 147 lobsters.
37:04The Chieftains just one lobster behind on 146.
37:09And the Buran boys remain unchanged at 100 lobsters.
37:13They'll pull their first shot tomorrow.
37:18We started off pretty well.
37:20We died the last ten pots.
37:23Over near, uh, Captain Pugwash.
37:26Did no good.
37:30That's what happens when you get close.
37:32Sometimes you're just falling old.
37:35Pick up everyone's seconds.
37:40Jesse's seasick, but he still works through it.
37:43We'll just get a couple of seasick tablets into him tonight
37:45and keep the fluid up for him.
37:48He'll come right tomorrow.
37:50I know he will.
37:51Mate or Jesse, you'll come right tomorrow, mate.
37:53Day two.
37:54Day two.
38:11Day two.
38:13It looks like we've got a few boaters inside us, you can see their lights, and, uh, yeah, I think
38:18one's coming our way. I think it'll be right.
38:21Hopefully he doesn't get too close to us and give us the shoot.
38:25The deer here he is has come with his shooting deer,
38:28what we've got here.
38:32The shooting has brought.
38:38You ready to see them here or up close?
38:40He's right behind us, literally.
38:45I've never, like, been fishing with boats
38:47sort of close like this before.
38:50She's on a big boat.
38:52Yeah, it looks like a pirate ship.
38:53Listen to it chugging along.
38:55We're all in the same boat.
38:57Well, we're in different boats,
38:57but we're all in it together, I guess.
39:01Bit of rivalry.
39:06Ah, Chieftain, you about there, bros?
39:09Hey, Miles, how you going?
39:11Yeah, good, is it?
39:12That's you right in front of me, is it?
39:14Yeah.
39:15Yeah, I've got deer there.
39:18See, mind you.
39:19Yeah, past one before.
39:24So, in other words, you're shooting right through my pots.
39:29Yeah, righto, mate.
39:30Oh, well, too easy, mate.
39:34Alright.
39:35Alright.
39:38Thanks, Bryce.
39:40Everyone's just got to keep shuffling around.
39:42It's...
39:43Look, they might be pissed off that I'm here,
39:45but I'm pissed off they're here.
39:48Generally, when you've got your lights going, you're fishing,
39:52you don't just head towards...
39:53straight towards someone and start shooting pots,
39:55but, you know, it is what it is.
39:57Everyone's got different ethics and rules,
39:59but, you know, it's just gonna show a bit of courtesy
40:02and respect sometimes, you know?
40:05If Bryce keeps on shooting pots in through my pots
40:08and on top of me,
40:09he might come out one day and, you know,
40:12half his pot's been shot off.
40:17What's going on?
40:18Uh, same shit, different day.
40:20Yeah, I know.
40:21What are you up to anyway?
40:23Uh, I ran over one of Bryce's pots
40:25because he's shot all around me.
40:27Yeah, he's just done with me now too.
40:30And it's just...
40:30It's first in best for us, you know?
40:32Same Bryce.
40:33Just a different day.
40:35At the end of the day,
40:36Bryce doesn't have respect for his fellow fishermen.
40:39If he wants to set pots,
40:40he just goes sets them wherever he likes.
40:42And I don't work that way.
40:44When a Scrizzy called me,
40:45he did the same thing as Scrizzy today.
40:47Hey!
40:48You got food, you can't get your own f***ing fish.
40:51No!
40:53F***ing wanker!
40:58Bryce really gave me a s*** today.
41:00Mate, there's ten nautical miles of bottom out here.
41:04There's enough to fit heaps of boats on
41:07and not run into each other,
41:08but some people are a little bit different.
41:12I might have annoyed someone today,
41:13but I'd...
41:14They shouldn't be pissed off.
41:16They shouldn't be pissed off.
41:18It's nothing to be angry about.
41:19There's plenty of bottom out here.
41:21Look, I'd like to have the ocean to myself,
41:23but I don't own it.
41:25We've got to share it.
41:26And when you get close to someone,
41:28you just catch less,
41:29and it just pisses you off.
41:31I've got a lot of stresses,
41:33and, you know, I've got a lot of big bills I've got to pay,
41:35and it's just when someone starts doing that,
41:37it just...
41:37I really, really, you know,
41:41tried not to lose my s*** at Bryce,
41:43but, yeah, I was holding a fair bit in today, that's for sure.
41:46I know.
41:59Binebill,
42:00that's a little simple.
42:07We did it.
42:11People...
42:11They don't have to cry.
42:12Go, go.
42:12Joey.
42:13Go, go, go.
42:13Go, go!
42:13Go.
42:14Go, go, go, go.
