00:00Known as Child Q, the black teenager was 15 years old when the strip search took place in Hackney
00:08after being wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis. Last summer, a disciplinary panel
00:15found two officers had committed gross misconduct during the quote-unquote disproportionate
00:22and humiliating incident, and the pair were dismissed from the Metropolitan Police without
00:28notice. A report this week by Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel D'Souza's office
00:33found no searches were recorded as happening at a school in the latest period of July 2023 to June
00:412024, although it added that more than a quarter of search locations were not recorded. Using data
00:48from the first half of 2024, her office estimated a total of 377 strip searches took place in the
00:56whole of that year. This was down 56% on 854 searches in 2020. While standard stop and searches
01:06can involve the removal of coats and jackets, strip searching can involve exposure of intimate body
01:11parts and are governed by strict rules, which officers must follow including where they take
01:17place and who should be present. The Commissioner warned of continued ethnic disparities, saying black
01:23children were almost five times as likely to have false used during a search than white children.
