00:12I'm Max McConaughey, I'm on a glacier in Norway, 12 dog power, 24 dog leg power, and I'm about
00:23to be running wild with Bear Grylls. Giddy up. Bear and I've been trying to hook up to do this
00:30for about 20 years. Finally, we got this one together. Here we go, man. 20 years we're making. Enjoying. Look
00:37forward to it.
00:48This is Norway. It's a land of water, ice, and rock bases like no other. Some of these mountains are
00:57over a billion years old, carved and shaped by the fields and by the glaciers.
01:03If ever there is a place to expect the unexpected, it's here. I'm on my way to pick up the
01:11one and only, the legend, Matthew McConaughey. I hope he's ready. This one's going to be special. Welcome to Running
01:21Wild.
01:30Thank you, Moa. The dog sled driver gave me what's called the uncle, an anchor. I have no idea. We're
01:38going to be using this somewhere today.
01:44There's something about being out in Mother Nature that the buzz is that you're just a little closer to the
01:51food chain and where you are in the food chain.
01:53And that's a natural high. I've always thought if I die, if I go as part of the food chain,
01:59I just feel there's an elegance to that.
02:01It may hurt. But if that happens, I'll feel like that was written.
02:09We're not in Texas anymore. I know that.
02:13Matthew McConaughey is a legend.
02:16Say that again.
02:18Matthew McConaughey is a true legend.
02:21You bet I am.
02:23His name brings to mind so many classic movies, so many beloved characters.
02:29All right, all right, all right, all right.
02:31From blockbusters to prestige television, McConaughey has been a leading man and an A-list icon for decades.
02:40Truth hurts, baby.
02:42Matthew also shares his wit and wisdom as a best-selling author.
02:46To get to know the man behind the legendary action...
02:53...and heartwarming comedies on taking Texas' favourite son out of his element and into the wilderness of Norway.
03:00You can't be serious.
03:02This is going to be an adventure to remember.
03:05All right, all right, all right.
03:08It's too late now, man. We're here. I ain't going back down the mountain.
03:14Coming across the glacier. Okay, takes down, then.
03:18Mr. Matthew McConaughey, here we go.
03:21Keep going.
03:26Three, two...
03:26Okay, bears out.
03:28How are you, buddy?
03:29Good, man.
03:29Well done.
03:30Come on down.
03:31I got a feeling today's going to be a little bit of that adrenaline, but that's a natural high I'm
03:35looking forward to.
03:36Welcome to Running Wild, man.
03:37Good to see you, man.
03:38Nice to see you.
03:39They're trying to make this happen for 20 years.
03:42That's all right, man.
03:43Bear is the expert.
03:45I'm coming to his office, and we'll come out of here, hopefully both of us, with a story that we'll
03:50remember.
03:51Look at that. Beautiful.
03:54Didn't you bring the hook in the backpack?
03:58Matthew and I will be travelling seven miles through a remote glacial valley.
04:03We'll make our way down sheer granite cliffs, up steep rocky terrain, and through serpentine valleys, eventually finding a place
04:12to make camp.
04:13On day two, we'll attempt the largest descent in Running Wild history, and navigate through a series of frigid Arctic
04:21lakes to get to our extraction point.
04:24They say everything is bigger in Texas, but wait till Matthew sees Norway.
04:32Okay, take it down there.
04:33Okay, take it down there.
04:35Okay, we're down, we're down.
04:41We've got to drop more down here.
04:45All right, that's bus number one.
04:49The journey begins, I love it.
04:52That was my first natural high, right there.
04:55Just switch across the left, just a little bit of gravity, making you feel real small, which makes you feel
05:01real big.
05:02Very good, very good.
05:03Nice to see you, brother.
05:04Hey, good to see you, man.
05:05It's been a while.
05:06You've been keeping it okay?
05:07Yeah.
05:09Kiddos, all teenagers in the house now.
05:10I mean, it's crazy, isn't it?
05:12How old are your kids now?
05:13So a little few years ahead of yours.
05:1516, 19, and 22.
05:16Awesome.
05:17Yeah, yeah, so fun.
05:18You know.
05:18But we're still going.
05:19Hell yeah, man.
05:19And we're still married to the same women.
05:21Hey.
05:22You know what it's like?
05:23You can't take that for granted in life now.
05:25Because it's not the majority.
05:27It ain't happening.
05:28And I love the fact that we've known each other a while, and we said we'd figure this out at
05:32the right time.
05:33We finally did.
05:34Yeah, it's good.
05:34First time in Norway?
05:36First time.
05:36Beautiful.
05:37Well, this is West Coast, super remote.
05:40This time of year, obviously, also almost daylight.
05:4224-7.
05:44Oh, they're not.
05:44And the weather's nice today, but the one concern about Norway weather is that it will change.
05:50Happy?
05:51I'm happy, man.
05:52Let's do it.
05:53Come on.
05:54So our journey takes us basically south.
05:57We can see a whole bunch of ravines, cliffs, lakes, rivers.
06:01Just take our time down, all of this sort of thing.
06:04This undulating, pretty difficult terrain, we're just going to work buddy-buddy together,
06:08and we're looking for a big drop-off down towards this lake.
06:14Definitely not Texas now.
06:16No.
06:17This is a big respite for me, man.
06:20I need to shake the city off of me right now.
06:22Yeah.
06:23I've been really busy.
06:23Have you had quite a lot of city?
06:25Yeah, a lot of city, a lot of intellectual stuff, so...
06:29Oh, well, you're in great company with this lot, and me.
06:32We'll bring the intellectual down a few notches.
06:35Let's bring it down, man.
06:46We have got some blueberry bushes, look.
06:51Yeah, look, little blueberries.
06:53Yeah.
06:54Here you go, try that.
06:58What would be your foods off the land up here for any long amount?
07:04Well, it's a really interesting question, because so many of the great, like the World
07:07War II-resistant Norwegian heroes, they literally lived off reindeer moss, which is this lichen.
07:13I mean, they actually arguably saved the war, because the Germans were so close to developing
07:18a nuclear weapon with the hard water plants up here.
07:21It was unguarded, because it was established that nobody could survive up there in winter.
07:25And these Norwegian resistance guys dropped down, and they blew this thing, and they survived
07:30for, like, 60-odd days.
07:31They'd eat reindeer moss that was in the stomachs of dead reindeer.
07:35So, I mean, they actually were, like, proper heroes.
07:38Okay, let's head that way, and we'll drop around that bit.
07:41Yeah.
07:43So, top of the mountain here, we've got some cliffs, big thumping waterfalls.
07:52The weather's pretty good at the moment, but also, I've known it horrific up here, so
07:58we take nothing for granted.
07:59That's eventually where we want to head down to.
08:02Okay, come on with me.
08:03What's the step here?
08:04If you want to stay on that south trajectory, which means we're going to have to drop off
08:09this cliff.
08:10Okay, here we go.
08:11Be cautious here.
08:14A pre-placed diagonal line that takes us all the way down to the valley floor is going
08:18to save hours.
08:19It's quite committing, though, if you haven't done this before, because that exposure becomes
08:23quite significant quite quickly.
08:27Okay, so then we've got a line here tied all the way to the bottom.
08:31Here we are.
08:32First time, I guess we're going to get off our feet and repel.
08:36As we lower ourselves down, we're going to be clipped into this tight line, and it'll
08:40take us away from the edge of the cliff.
08:43Gotcha.
08:43I don't think down the face, what it looks like is we're going to be two lines and kind
08:48of going off at an angle away from the face of the cliff, which I've never done before.
08:53If I do something like this, or if I do like a stunt, a Tesseract, an Interstellar, I want
08:58to look the stunt coordinator in the eye.
09:00I'm there shaking his hand in the morning going, how's your heart and mind these days,
09:03man?
09:04You know what I mean?
09:06You'll see me do it all make sense.
09:08Super straightforward.
09:09Trust the gear.
09:10Okay, we'll get tired doing that a bit.
09:14Trust the gear.
09:20Here we go, here we go.
09:22Down, down, down.
09:24Keep going.
09:26And then we're good.
09:29So this will be the committee bit.
09:32The master's just going to initially drop off.
09:41It's definitely more slippery and awkward than it looks.
09:47You know you're technically strapped in.
09:50You know logically you're good.
09:52But it's still an abnormal thing to do physiologically.
09:59That's part of the buzz.
10:07It's definitely quite committing if you've never done that before, once you go over the edge
10:11and look down.
10:14You'll definitely get what he's calling the buzz.
10:24The unknown is what's exciting.
10:26You start to feel smaller and that's the beginning of the humility.
10:32You're never taking this for granted.
10:35Just the sheer vastness of Mother Nature.
10:38Feels alive now, you know.
10:40We'll go see what we can overcome.
10:42And after you overcome it, then you start feeling bigger.
10:48Right now, I'm feeling good and small.
10:53You're good.
10:54Yeah, pull it back and then go for it.
11:07Okay, we're good.
11:09You're good.
11:21Trust the gear.
11:27I know mathematically when the science says all this stuff can hold you and I get it.
11:32But I wasn't there when they were twining this rope.
11:37And me.
11:39I just kind of wanted to see him do it.
11:43Trust the gear.
11:45Well done, Matthew.
11:46Good job.
11:57Well done, Matthew.
11:58You get a cool workout on this, don't you, mother lad?
12:01Oh, yeah.
12:02I didn't anticipate that.
12:05Worth a figure.
12:07It's not like in a climbing gym, you know.
12:09No.
12:11Body sweat officially broken.
12:15That's an A-plus core-ass workout right there.
12:18I'm going to trust it a little bit more on the way down.
12:22I'm not quite there to the full-on surrender yet.
12:25But we've got a day and ask us, let's see.
12:30In winter, this will be under, like, 20 foot of snow.
12:34Your head's going to be so full of random weird facts by the end of the day.
12:38I'm going to be so full of random weird facts by the end of the day.
12:40Look, we've got this nice stream.
12:42It's definitely worth just having a splash of water hydrate.
12:4899% of the time, you don't drink from streams.
12:50Clear water isn't clean water.
12:53Yeah.
12:53The glacier's so close above us, the likelihood of any contamination from dead animals or even
12:58animals drinking in this bit of stream is really low.
13:01This is as pristine and beautiful as you'll ever get.
13:05I mean, this is God's fresh water right here.
13:08You know, normally you've got to be careful.
13:09When you see mountain streams like that that look beautiful, it doesn't always mean they're
13:13good to drink.
13:14But just coming across that flowing pool of beautiful Norwegian water is pristine, tastes
13:20amazing.
13:21So when you do get a chance to rehydrate, take it.
13:25This water here, that's better than a bottle of water.
13:28Even if they put that in a bottle, it's better straight out of the source right there.
13:40So if we stop.
13:47Well, this could be worse.
13:49This could be horrific weather, you know, and we're not counting our chickens because
13:54it's Norway.
13:54But at the moment, this is as good as it ever gets.
13:57I mean, this is just beautiful.
13:59Temperature's perfect.
14:00There's not even a breeze right now.
14:02So was your first thing you kind of got in the public eye?
14:05Was it unsolved mysteries?
14:08Remember that?
14:10Please don't shoot him.
14:13I wouldn't say that put me in the public eye.
14:15Really?
14:16But it was the first thing I did.
14:18And I always like to say this.
14:19They caught the killer two weeks later.
14:21So I was like, I must have done a decent job.
14:24You were very good.
14:27If you think back to that kind of time in your life, were you thinking, this is what I want
14:30to do?
14:31Or were you just...
14:31No.
14:31It was, I was in the right bar at the right time.
14:33I knew the bartender.
14:34And he said, there's a producer down at the end of the bar in town producing a film.
14:37I went down and introduced myself.
14:39He says, his name is Don Phillips.
14:41He says, you ever done any acting?
14:42He goes, well, I'll come to this address tomorrow morning at 930.
14:45I got a script for you.
14:46There's a role in there.
14:46You might be right for the part.
14:48Next thing I know, I'm in this 70 Chevelle car getting a lavalier mic put on.
14:53There's not a word written for the singer.
14:55And I've never acted before.
14:57I'm sitting there going, who's my man?
14:59Who's Wooderson, right?
15:00What am I about?
15:01And I said, Wooderson.
15:01I said, what do I love?
15:02I said, I love my car.
15:04I said, bam, I'm in my 70 Chevelle.
15:06I said, I love rock and roll.
15:08I said, ah, man, I got Ted Nugent's Stranglehold in the eight track right now.
15:11There's two.
15:12I said, at three, I love to get high.
15:15Next thing I hear is action.
15:16I drop it and drive.
15:18And I think to myself, I got three of my favorite things already.
15:23All right, all right, all right.
15:26And that was the three affirmations for the three things I did.
15:29I had the first three words I ever said on film.
15:31That's amazing.
15:32That's amazing.
15:34And then drove out to Hollywood.
15:36Showed up on that guy's couch.
15:37Don Phillips, the guy I met that night in the bar.
15:40Slept on his couch.
15:42And I asked him, I said, can I get an agent's meeting?
15:45And he started just yelling at me.
15:46He goes, you don't need an agent's meeting.
15:50You're needing it too much.
15:51Hollywood smells you needing it.
15:54Hollywood will kick you out before you ever got in the door.
15:57Because what you need to do is get out of here and go with your mates from Days Confused.
16:02Take your motorcycle somewhere and go ride somewhere.
16:04And we got tickets to Amsterdam the next day.
16:08Me, Rory Cochran, and Cole Hauser, my new friends from Days Confused,
16:12rode through Europe for a month, came back, wasn't thinking about getting an agent.
16:19And about five days after I was back, he goes, tomorrow morning, I got us a meeting, William
16:23Morris Agency.
16:24He goes, you're ready.
16:26I go, why am I ready?
16:26He goes, you don't need it.
16:28You just want it.
16:29Went in.
16:29Yeah.
16:31Don was smart.
16:31He was real smart.
16:33He's up there now.
16:34But yeah, he was a legend.
16:35But it isn't like it just sort of fell upon you.
16:38You went to that bar to meet Don.
16:40You found your kind of niche.
16:41And then you kind of figured out what do I need to do, you know?
16:44I was aggressive.
16:45But also, dude, I've definitely had some grace shine down on me.
16:50There's some things I look back that only make sense now.
16:54That's beautiful and true.
16:57OK, we're going to keep moving.
16:59Otherwise, we'll start getting stiff.
17:01And then it gets harder to move.
17:04OK, go this way.
17:06Ah.
17:13In an alpine wilderness, there are always peaks and valleys.
17:20We need to make our way up and over this next ridge to get to camp.
17:25It's a good way for Matthew to get ready,
17:27as the terrain will only get more treacherous tomorrow.
17:32So we're going to head up over the top of this.
17:35Over the top of this?
17:37I'd ask our team to pre-place a rope for us and a Jumar device.
17:41And I'm going to use this device to go up the rope,
17:43but it won't slide back down it.
17:45Again, it's physical, but it'll get us on top.
17:48We're going to what's called Jumar up it.
17:50A classic technique.
17:52And just goes one way.
17:54I don't know exactly how this Jumar works, technically,
17:57but I'm about to find out.
18:04Use your feet as much as you can.
18:07You're pulling, sliding, and you're getting that into a rhythm.
18:11It's just a technique that climbers use.
18:14Special forces troops use it to get onto oil rigs and stuff.
18:17It allows you to climb up, but not slip down a rope.
18:20What goes down has got to come up.
18:24So these Jumars are always quite awkward.
18:27You had a cool workout on the first thing.
18:29This is going to be a forearm workout.
18:32That's what they say in nature.
18:34Full-body workout.
18:35I'm curious to see what gets fatigued
18:37the first time my body on this one.
18:46Okay, Matthew.
18:48Yeah.
18:48On your way up, just pick up dinner.
18:50It's just on that ledge.
18:51Okay.
18:52I'd ask the crew to leave a local delicacy
18:54for us to eat for camp later halfway up this rock face.
19:06Let's go.
19:07Pull, relax.
19:09Put your weight in it, then slide.
19:12As far as it will go.
19:14That's it.
19:15You'll get the rhythm.
19:17Oh, yeah.
19:18I've got to give slack here.
19:20There it is.
19:22That's it.
19:23Put it all the way down, all the way in.
19:26The problem with most adventures
19:28is people get out of the gate too quick.
19:30I've learned that even working on sets.
19:33I used to wake up at 6 a.m.
19:34and then fire out of bed
19:35and be like, let's go.
19:37And then by 10.30 in the morning, I poop.
19:39Well done, Matthew.
19:41I've learned to pace myself.
19:42It's a workout, isn't it?
19:45Much more relaxing visual.
19:47Well, see, when you're looking up,
19:48it's much better.
19:50Yeah, that's not as relaxing.
19:54But now that I trust my Jumar.
19:56Yeah.
20:02Oh, I see something.
20:04That's dinner.
20:05It's provided by the reindeers.
20:07Looks like it definitely might need a fire.
20:09Yeah.
20:12Reindeer gifts, huh?
20:14A reindeer gift from the bull.
20:17Perfect.
20:18What part of the bull?
20:19The crew kindly provided
20:20from the reindeer bull
20:22one of its testicles.
20:24That's how much they love us.
20:26A little reindeer
20:27ready for the evening.
20:30Sustain it.
20:32Hyah!
20:33Could be able to climb this up now.
20:35Look, let me use me, use me.
20:38Here we are.
20:40Ah!
20:41Great.
20:44I like the Jumar.
20:45It's hard work, isn't it?
20:46Yeah, it's a good one.
20:47Yeah.
20:47It's a good one.
20:48I was, like, pouring a sweat
20:49when I got the top.
20:51This one I dug quite a bit.
20:53Really good upper body workout.
20:54But again, a rhythm with it,
20:56the patience,
20:56and really comfortable
20:57if you need a rest.
20:58That was like sitting a lazy boy.
21:00Jumar, I'm a fan.
21:01Look at Tinder hands.
21:02Look at Tinder City hands.
21:03That's good.
21:04That's good.
21:04Look, the guns are firing.
21:07Tender feet, tender hands,
21:08and shake a little city
21:09off of you, McGonagher.
21:12So, top of the Jumar.
21:14Rookie, first time Matthew.
21:16Picks things up quickly.
21:17He also managed to grab us dinner.
21:20You know, it's like,
21:23I mean, it's like Norway's version
21:24of, what is it,
21:25Rocky Mountain oysters.
21:28Okay.
21:30So, that's what it is.
21:32Reindeer balls.
21:33I'm taking it.
21:34That's a, yeah,
21:35that's the left one,
21:36I believe.
21:37I got the right one.
21:38So, we got one nut each.
21:41Look out for us tomorrow, man.
21:43Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
21:45Okay, come on.
21:46This is why we came up here.
21:47So, now we can see the whole,
21:49whole valley
21:49all the way down to the coast.
21:52Still south.
21:53That's west, the sea.
21:54So, the Jumar
21:55saved us a bunch of time,
21:57but both of us pretty tired.
21:59We're a little bit colder.
22:00So, I'm going to kind of
22:01cut through that little valley
22:03and really then
22:04we're going to start looking
22:05for a place to make camp.
22:08So, this is going to be
22:09a great place.
22:10We've got water,
22:12a little bit of flat ground
22:14and a view to die for.
22:17Protected from the bad weather.
22:18It's like an amphitheatre of mountains.
22:21These one-man tents are great,
22:22so we're going to get these up,
22:23get a fire going,
22:25get the testicle cooking
22:26and we should be golden.
22:28We can have a fire
22:29in the opening here.
22:30Okay.
22:31Water.
22:33Need a pee in the night.
22:35Easy.
22:35Look at that.
22:38Well done.
22:38Yeah.
22:39Well done.
22:40You worked hard.
22:41Enjoyed that.
22:41You worked hard.
22:42It's a good, honest sweat.
22:43It's good.
22:44Yeah.
22:44It was a full-body workout
22:47and it was long.
22:48It's amazing, isn't it?
22:49And it's true
22:50that we usually remember
22:51the getaways
22:52that were the most adventurous,
22:54the ones that didn't have
22:55the silk sheets,
22:56the ones that didn't have
22:57the pina colada
22:58under the umbrella,
22:59even though those are nice.
23:01The highlight of the evening meal.
23:04Oh, it doesn't have a great smell.
23:06Come on.
23:06I'm not going to lie.
23:13No.
23:14What would you think that was
23:15if that was on the menu smell first?
23:17You'd probably look
23:18at a different restaurant.
23:19Something about cutting
23:20into a testicle.
23:22As a man,
23:23you can't help
23:24but feel pain.
23:25You know,
23:26it's phantom pain.
23:27Maybe that's how
23:27they describe it,
23:28phantom pain.
23:29You know,
23:30we have got that.
23:30Yeah, we could.
23:34I mean,
23:35ball stew.
23:39Well,
23:40dinner's cooking.
23:40Look at this.
23:42I mean,
23:43the last time we met,
23:44you very kindly cooked us,
23:45me and my family,
23:47dinner.
23:47Yeah.
23:47You delivered
23:48these most amazing,
23:49like,
23:50slabs of proper
23:51Texan T-bone.
23:53It was awesome.
23:54And I feel
23:56I've under-delivered.
23:57I'm not going to lie.
23:58But this is
23:59apropos
24:00for where we are.
24:01It is apropos.
24:02100%.
24:08Your partnership
24:09with Woody,
24:09has that been
24:10a fun thing
24:10in your life?
24:11Yeah,
24:12he's a constant reminder
24:13for me
24:13to stay young
24:15because he's
24:16a perpetual
24:16eight-year-old.
24:17Oh, my gosh.
24:19I mean,
24:20you can't get mad
24:20at Woody
24:21for showing up
24:22barefoot
24:23three days late
24:23to your own wedding
24:25because you can
24:26show up
24:26three days late
24:27to his own wedding
24:27and he don't care.
24:30He ain't never
24:31gone through
24:31a front door
24:31in his life.
24:33That's so funny.
24:34I woke up next to him
24:35in my bed
24:36between me and my wife
24:37because he snuck
24:38through the bedroom window
24:39unannounced
24:39many times.
24:40Are you serious?
24:42That is brilliant.
24:44He's great.
24:46I always like to say,
24:47the only guy
24:48that's almost kissed
24:49my wife
24:50as many times
24:50as I have.
24:54How many years
24:54have you married now?
24:55Thirteen.
24:56What have you learned
24:56about marriage?
24:57It's a challenge
24:58once you have children.
25:00Sometimes we get down
25:01the track
25:01where it's so much
25:02about the kids
25:02and we look up
25:03and go,
25:04oh, hey,
25:06how are you doing?
25:07I've got to remind myself,
25:08I forgot who told me
25:09this a long time ago
25:10about the best example
25:11you can give your kids
25:11is how you treat
25:13their mother.
25:15My grandpa,
25:16he said,
25:17parenting in three words,
25:19example,
25:19example,
25:22I think a man's
25:23a prince
25:23until he has
25:24children
25:25and then becomes
25:25a king.
25:26I don't think
25:27there's anything
25:27more important
25:28that a man can do.
25:30In effect, man,
25:31we're mortal.
25:32That's the beginning
25:33of our immortality
25:34and hopefully
25:35we're lucky enough
25:36for them to have
25:36offspring
25:37and it continues
25:38to pass that down.
25:39I think that's
25:39the greatest art
25:41that a man can make
25:43is being a good father
25:44to a son
25:45or a daughter.
25:46The rest is detailed,
25:48really.
25:48Right.
25:50Should we try
25:51the testicle?
25:52Hell yeah.
25:54Look at that.
25:58I would say
25:59it's improved
25:59with cooking.
26:01Reindeer testicle.
26:04Here's to the day,
26:05life,
26:06friendships,
26:06family.
26:08Amen.
26:15Hey.
26:17Hey.
26:18Can I have
26:18another piece,
26:19please?
26:21That's a hell
26:22of a lot better
26:22than I thought
26:23it was going to be.
26:24That's a phrase
26:25you don't often
26:25associate
26:26with this show.
26:31Rudolph.
26:36That's really
26:37not bad.
26:38Texture was
26:39six out of ten.
26:41Taste was
26:41six out of ten.
26:43If you just
26:43got out of your head
26:45what the heck
26:45it was,
26:46you'd throw the right
26:46kind of spice on there.
26:47some of my famous
26:48rub,
26:49Charlie edges
26:50a little bit.
26:51You might have an
26:52eight out of ten
26:53and have something
26:53you can put on the menu.
26:56Happy?
26:57Being out here
26:59is a heck
26:59of a gift, man.
27:01Mother nature
27:02is God's greatest art.
27:04You've got a new book,
27:05a mix of poems
27:06and prayers.
27:07Poems and prayers.
27:08Yeah, great.
27:09Where's that come from?
27:10It came from
27:11me looking around,
27:12maybe something about
27:13getting in the early 50s.
27:14You know,
27:16we go from
27:16being a child
27:17you're naive
27:18then you're innocent
27:20then you're skeptical
27:21as you learn things
27:22and then there's
27:23that fourth one
27:24people become
27:24which is cynical.
27:25That's the disease
27:26of aging,
27:27one of the worst
27:27diseases we have
27:29is cynicism.
27:30I'm not for foolish
27:31optimism.
27:32I don't believe
27:33everything's always
27:34just rosy and great
27:36and everyone's always
27:37telling the truth
27:37and everything
27:38just hunky-dory.
27:39No,
27:40it's not.
27:40but to sort of
27:43tap out
27:44and go
27:46so that's just
27:47the way it is.
27:48It's just
27:49I'm not ready to
27:50throw up a white flag
27:51on that.
27:52So I myself
27:52personally
27:53was going
27:54man
27:54I want more belief
27:56so poems and prayers
27:58more mystical
28:00more spiritual
28:01more faithful
28:02belief in self
28:03others
28:04potential
28:04God.
28:06no life
28:07I think life
28:08without any form
28:09of faith
28:10is
28:11life's hard
28:12enough as it is
28:13right
28:13I don't want
28:14to do it
28:14on my own
28:15I get it
28:16it's hard
28:16you look at
28:17leadership
28:18turn on the news
28:19there's
28:20the evidence
28:21doesn't give reason
28:22for belief
28:23you know
28:24at least in the
28:25civilized world
28:25doesn't you
28:26out here like this
28:26you sure as heck
28:27get evidence
28:28for belief
28:30if I'm not
28:31finding it
28:31in the world
28:32that I'm seeing
28:33around me
28:35maybe I'm looking
28:36in the wrong place
28:41so really fun day
28:42with Matthew
28:43he's a bright spirit
28:44he's such a grounded
28:45person as well
28:46and motivated
28:47by life
28:48and by his family
28:49and faith
28:50and those are
28:50enduring things
28:51in life
28:52but both of us
28:53pretty tired
28:53we're gonna
28:54definitely sleep
28:55well I think
28:55tonight
28:55it's a weird place
28:56because obviously
28:57it never gets dark
28:58in Norway
28:59in summertime
28:59so you just
29:01kind of put the hood
29:02up
29:02cover your eyes
29:03and sleep
29:04big day tomorrow
29:06something comforting
29:07about it
29:08fire
29:08no walls
29:09except for these
29:10mountains
29:11trusted environment
29:12whatever you say
29:13can blow in the breeze
29:14as far as it wants to
29:15and you got a pretty
29:16good idea
29:17it's gonna land
29:17on safe ears
29:18even
29:18who's ever here
29:20as they are
29:20yeah something comforting
29:22about it
29:23I've had three
29:24really good buzzes
29:25today
29:25natural highs
29:26I got a feeling
29:27that a couple more
29:28are coming tomorrow
29:45okay
29:46those worked
29:49first night in Norway
29:50in the 10
29:50it's not bad at all
29:52I got more sleep
29:53than I did the night
29:53before
29:54now the trickle
29:55all night
29:56was a little
30:00bedtime melody
30:02this feels like
30:03probably now
30:04okay let's go
30:07Matthew and I
30:08have 1500 feet
30:10of elevation
30:11still to descend
30:12so we'll have to
30:13find our way
30:14down this granite
30:15mountain
30:15and through a series
30:16of glacial lakes
30:18to get to our
30:19extraction point
30:21the only constant
30:22with the Norwegian
30:23weather
30:23is that it will
30:24change
30:25and this mountain
30:26sees a lot of rain
30:28a lot of snow
30:29watch this step
30:30down here
30:30it's gonna be
30:30quite slippery
30:34morale is always
30:36harder when it's
30:36raining
30:37I've learned that
30:37but it's also
30:39where we distinguish
30:40ourselves
30:40you know
30:41you go anywhere
30:42that's new
30:43you're hyper
30:44focused
30:44yeah
30:47we've still got
30:47some journeys
30:48between here
30:49and where we're
30:49getting picked up
30:50so a bit of
30:51hiking in
30:52and eventually
30:53our way out of
30:54here
30:54put a smile on
30:55keep going
30:55yeah we're ready
30:56hello guys
30:58hey
31:00yes
31:01mate
31:03ma
31:07ma
31:09ma
31:10ma
31:10ma
31:11ma
31:11ma
31:11ma
31:11ma
31:18that slippery rock
31:19was wet
31:22look this starts
31:23to drop off now
31:24mm-hmm
31:30you see this is
31:32gonna be steep
31:32we're gonna definitely
31:34need rope for this
31:35all of this rock is
31:37carved by glacial ice
31:39so it's smooth
31:40and once that drop off
31:42starting
31:42it's gonna get quite
31:43committing I think this
31:44you can see all the way
31:46down to the lake set
31:47yeah I'm just anticipating
31:49this is gonna be
31:50bigger than maybe it feels
31:52from up here
31:54that's probably about
31:55800 foot down to that
31:56yeah it's definitely
31:58quite a bit more than that
31:59uh
32:01the first descend
32:03but we're obviously gonna be
32:05much steeper
32:08fear of heights
32:09sure
32:12okay let's make a solid
32:14anchor point here
32:16so obviously we've got a lot of trees
32:18to tie off to
32:20these are the rocks
32:21not strong enough
32:22hey
32:22you got that talon from the dogs
32:24yes I do
32:25yeah
32:26you might have
32:27you might have been thinking
32:28why do we need this thing
32:29the terrain so far
32:31has been treacherous
32:32but nothing compares
32:34to what's ahead
32:35if Matthew and I
32:36are gonna get off
32:37this mountain
32:37we have to go down
32:39the longest rappel
32:40I've ever done
32:41on Running Wild
32:42this is 800 feet
32:45of sheer granite rock
32:46but there are no good
32:48anchor points
32:49so we're gonna have to
32:50use the brake
32:51from his dog sled
32:52we'll stamp it into the ground
32:54tie it off
32:55and make our way down
32:57the anchor
32:57as long as the force is that way
32:59but as soon as you go like this
33:01it lifts out
33:02just beautifully
33:03I mean it works
33:04because all the force is low
33:06give that a kick in
33:07it's only dug into about that much
33:09you know grass and soil
33:11it looks a little precarious
33:13as long as the angle is low
33:14which is gonna be
33:15as we go over these rocks
33:16that's gonna hold
33:19okay
33:20yep
33:20well we were using it
33:21as what is called
33:22an anchor
33:22but this time
33:23it's not stopping dogs
33:25it's holding the rope
33:26trust the engineer
33:29I feel good about it
33:30plus bear's going first
33:33you gotta really pull it
33:34to release it
33:35so keep it cranked open
33:37at the top
33:37you're lifting
33:38hundreds of feet of rope
33:39here
33:39which is super heavy
33:40it would get easier
33:41it would get steeper
33:42yes
33:43and once it gets steeper
33:44just lean back
33:45and trust the system
33:46okay
33:47lean back
33:48and trust the equipment
33:51so yeah
33:52it's all good
33:53probably another
33:5420 metres of this
33:55and then it looks like
33:56it drops off
33:57okay
33:57yep
34:01and this is where
34:03it starts to get
34:03a little steeper
34:05and this is where
34:06it's gonna get scarier
34:07for Matthew
34:08and you can see
34:09all the way to the bottom
34:13and rope
34:14I've needed
34:15what looks like
34:16about every metre of it
34:26I like it
34:28glad that anchored hold
34:32another big drop off here
34:34I hope there's enough rope
34:36even to reach
34:36to be honest
34:38I thought I'd be near
34:39the bottom by now
34:40but still a long way down
34:42wow
34:43lean back
34:44and trust the equipment
35:08okay
35:12so I knew
35:13you would need
35:14a lot of rope
35:15for that
35:15800 foot in total
35:17even with that
35:18it's still just
35:19tickling the bottom
35:20about 5 foot
35:21left over
35:22so that was
35:23gonna add our limit
35:24I'm not sure
35:25what to expect
35:26but
35:27trust to and with
35:28I'm not gonna be
35:30looking down
35:30singing songs
35:31I might be looking up
35:33singing songs
35:39lean back
35:41lean back
35:41and trust
35:41your equipment
35:43lean back
35:45and trust
35:46your equipment
36:03the awkward bit
36:04is the start
36:05you know
36:06it's at the top
36:06when all the nerves
36:07are going
36:08it's not yet vertical
36:09kind of awkward ground
36:11you've got all that
36:11weight of rope
36:12but just trust
36:13and keep moving
36:13and once it gets steeper
36:16it will start to flow
36:17and that rope
36:18will run smoother
36:29an adventure's gonna
36:30put yourself
36:31in a place
36:32that you do not know
36:34I do not want
36:35to do this
36:35I've never done
36:36this before
36:37but I'm going
36:38to overcome
36:39that fear
36:41I'm usually better
36:42in real life
36:43than I am
36:44in my dream
36:44my dreams
36:45I'll never get the girl
36:46I don't make the jump
36:47I think belief
36:48is actually
36:49the original dream
36:51so
36:52I have to believe in myself
36:53there we go baby
36:57do I have a plan
36:58no
36:59I'm going to let it come to me
37:00I'm taking my time
37:01play chess
37:02with the mountain
37:03a little bit
37:04this kind of thing
37:05is one of those drugs
37:06that money can't buy
37:08this is not
37:09my necessarily
37:10comfort zone
37:11but the experience
37:12I'm sure
37:13it'll be something
37:13I damn sure remember
37:16people maybe
37:17have repelled
37:18in the gym
37:18or on a climbing wall
37:19it's all nice
37:20and controlled
37:20but it's different
37:21out here
37:22but he's got that
37:23glint in his eye
37:24and you can't cheat
37:25your way there
37:25you've got to earn that
37:26and this is why
37:27I love this stuff
37:33you're doing well
37:35this is a big one for sure
37:37yes
37:40good effort
37:49I got to admit it was longer
37:50I got to admit it was longer
37:51than I thought
37:52you do have to trust
37:53your blind spot mate
37:54I'm betting
37:55I was a few inches
37:56further back
37:56leaning back
37:57trusting it
37:58than I was
37:58on the first one
37:59on that one
38:01gives you more stability
38:02you feel more balance
38:03once the body weight
38:04is bringing that down
38:05and you're not having
38:06to force it
38:07you really feel
38:07much more control
38:08that was good
38:09that was good
38:10that was a buzz
38:11proper buzz number four
38:12I do believe it was

41:31conversations with Bear and I
41:33when you're out like this
41:34with somebody one-on-one
41:35you get comfortable a lot quicker
41:37in a shorter amount of time
41:38and I think the fact that you're both
41:40dealing with the unknown
41:42there's a natural bonding experience
41:43that happens
41:44which is really cool
41:45about getting out
41:45and out and about
41:46in the wilderness
41:57this has been a really fun journey for me
42:00and obviously Matthew McConaughey is such an icon
42:03but the fun part for me is the man behind the icon
42:07and the values that he lives by
42:09it's about family
42:10it's about faith
42:11but also I think he's someone
42:13that is determined
42:14to live life
42:16on his terms
42:17and willing to step into the unknown
42:20and tackle the difficulty
42:21and that's rare in life
42:22but it's beautiful
42:24hot air
42:26yeah boys
