00:14To be continued...
00:30This is a late night. We hope you're doing well.
00:31And now, if you don't mind, we're going to get to the news.
00:34President Trump announced in a post yesterday on Truth Social
00:38that the U.S. military launched strikes on an Iranian cargo ship
00:42that attempted to breach its naval blockade and added,
00:44"...we have full custody of the ship and are seeing what's on board."
00:49And it's the first time he's ever been excited
00:52about having full custody.
00:56President Trump signed an executive order over the weekend
00:59to expedite medical research into psychedelic drugs
01:02that could be used to treat depression.
01:04When? Yelled Mets fans.
01:09During the signing ceremony over the weekend
01:11for an executive order that will loosen restrictions
01:13on psychedelic drugs, President Trump said,
01:16"...can I have some, please? Man, can you imagine Trump
01:19on an ayahuasca retreat?
01:22You know, they're saying I'm the most silent person
01:26of anyone on this silent retreat.
01:29Nobody is greater at being alone with their thoughts
01:34than Donald Trump."
01:36While speaking at a Turning Point USA rally on Friday,
01:39President Trump said that he has, quote,
01:41"...never seen so many young people in my life."
01:44Oh, sure.
01:45But will he say the same thing under oath?
01:51President Trump threatened in a post yesterday
01:54on Truth Social to strike bridges and power plants in Iran
01:57if the country's leaders do not sign a deal
02:00and added, quote,
02:01"...no more Mr. Nice Guy."
02:03What? When were you Mr. Nice Guy?
02:05I think I've only ever seen you be nice to one person.
02:11During an executive order signing ceremony over the weekend,
02:14President Trump called Health and Human Services
02:16Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., quote,
02:18"...somewhat outside the box."
02:20No, dude, your aunt in Portland
02:23is somewhat outside the box.
02:25RFK Jr. is like if Willy Wonka found Reddit.
02:31During a rally on Friday in Phoenix,
02:34President Trump said that he recently directed
02:36Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth
02:37to release government files on UFOs
02:40and added, quote,
02:40"...the first releases will begin very soon."
02:43Wait, they haven't been already?
02:45You're telling me this is just a guy?
02:50The Justice Department last week
02:52charged the organizer of the bar-crawl SantaCon
02:55for allegedly stealing nearly $3 million
02:58that was collected for charity.
03:00Even worse, he organized SantaCon.
03:04A humanoid robot won a half-marathon yesterday in Beijing
03:08with a time nearly seven minutes faster
03:10than the human world record.
03:11Best of all, it didn't have to catch its breath
03:14before it could start telling people it ran a marathon.
03:18Want to hear something cool?
03:23I hate to brag, but do you want to hear something cool I did?
03:28Are you wondering why I'm wearing a tinfoil cape?
03:35A new Grateful Dead app launched last week
03:38called Play Dead.
03:39It's the first ever app that can be installed on a landline.
03:46And finally, NPR announced last week
03:49it has received the largest donation from a living donor
03:52in the network's history, totaling $80 million,
03:55and you would not believe the tote bag she got.
04:00That was a monologue, everybody!
04:03We're back.
04:04We're so happy to be back.
04:06We're so excited for our guest tonight.
04:09He and the TV icon you know from groundbreaking shows
04:13like Happy Days and Barry.
04:15Currently, he's hosting Hazardous History
04:17over on the History Channel.
04:19Our very good friend Henry Winkler
04:21is back on the show.
04:24And they are the stars of Broadway's chest,
04:27now playing at the Imperial Theater here in New York.
04:30Erin DeVey, Lea Michele, and Nicholas Christopher
04:33are also joining us.
04:35How about that?
04:38But before we get to all of our terrific guests,
04:41this is usually the part of the show
04:43where we would do our recurring segment,
04:45A Closer Look, about all the crazy things
04:47that are happening in the news,
04:48but we just got back from a three-week break,
04:51and it turns out nothing happened.
04:52So instead, we're debuting our news segment,
04:57Everything's Great.
04:59Nothing bad can happen.
05:01It can only good happen.
05:03That's right.
05:04It's been a quiet three weeks,
05:06and nothing really...
05:07What's that?
05:08Oh, Iran says it straight to the Hormuz is closed again?
05:12Okay.
05:13What?
05:13Iranian gunboats fired on a tanker?
05:15And, sorry, the U.S. seized an Iranian cargo ship,
05:18and Iran is vowing to retaliate?
05:19Okay, well, that's just the Middle East.
05:21But what?
05:21Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi?
05:23He posted a meme of himself as Jesus,
05:26but then said he thought it was a meme of himself as a doctor?
05:29What?
05:30He said the Pope is weak on crime?
05:33A MAGA podcaster said Trump is under demonic influence.
05:37Pete Hegseth read a fake Bible verse from Pulp Fiction?
05:41Cash Patel thought he was fired
05:43because he got locked out of his computer,
05:45but then it turned out it was just an IT problem?
05:48What?
05:49A FEMA official claims he once teleported to a Waffle House,
05:52and when Trump was asked about it,
05:53he said,
05:54I don't know anything about teleporting?
05:57What?
05:58J.D. Vance flew to Hungary to campaign for Viktor Orban,
06:00who got crushed,
06:01then Vance flew to Pakistan to negotiate a peace deal with Iran,
06:03then Iran told him to f*** off,
06:05then he spoke to an empty arena and got heckled?
06:08What?
06:09Lindsey Graham was seen at Disney World by himself?
06:13And then the animatronic Olaf died?
06:18RFK Jr. cut off a dead raccoon's penis
06:21on the side of the road?
06:23Then he ate Olaf.
06:26RFK Jr. cut off.
06:26What?
06:27Kristi Noem's husband has giant fake balloon boobs?
06:31What?
06:32Trump signed an executive order backing the use of psychedelics?
06:35Wait, is that what's going on here?
06:37Are we all mushrooms?
06:41Is that why it teleported to a Waffle House last night
06:43and woke up looking like this?
06:48It turns out there's a lot going on.
06:50For more on this, it's time for a closer look.
06:56Well, we're now into week eight of the war with Iran,
07:00and we are still at the mercy of an oatmeal-brained 79-year-old megalomaniac
07:03who, based on his blue hand,
07:06has a slow-moving case of Violet Beauregard disease.
07:12Is that how this ends?
07:14He doesn't get impeached?
07:15He just blows up like a giant balloon
07:16and gets rolled away by the Oombaloombas?
07:20No one seems to know what's going on or what's going to happen next.
07:23By the time this airs, the Strait of Hormuz could be open.
07:25It could be closed.
07:26At this point, the Strait of Hormuz has more confusing hours
07:28than one of those pop-up restaurants
07:30that sell weird new foods for influencers to take pictures of.
07:34And you're like, why are people lining up at 6 a.m.?
07:35And they're like, oh, that's the new Minnesconi place.
07:37Yeah, they hollow out a scone like a bread bowl and fill it with soup.
07:41And you're like, oh, maybe I'll stop by at lunch.
07:43And then they're like, it's not open at lunch.
07:46In any 24-hour period, anything is possible.
07:48We could have ground troops in Iran.
07:50We could have a peace deal.
07:51We could have U.S. Navy destroyers firing on Iranian gunboats.
07:54Or Trump could be best friends with the Ayatollah.
07:56They could be trading insults on social media.
07:59Or they could open a new neighborhood bar called Ayatollah-so.
08:04This is a reminder as to why the Constitution gives Congress
08:07and only Congress the power to declare war.
08:10It's supposed to be a sober, deliberative process.
08:12The administration is supposed to present
08:14a carefully considered strategic plan,
08:16and our representatives are supposed to discuss it and vote on it.
08:20The Constitution says Congress shall have the power to declare war.
08:23It doesn't say, refresh the president's social media page
08:26every 30 seconds to see if he called the Ayatollah a bitch.
08:30That's how we went from this comment on Friday...
08:33Iran has just announced that the Strait of Hormuz
08:37is fully open and ready for business.
08:40...to this comment on Sunday...
08:41...confusion around transit in the Strait of Hormuz.
08:44Iran said on Saturday the critical waterway was closed again.
08:48So, just to be clear, it's not safe right now
08:51to go through the Strait of Hormuz, correct?
08:52That is correct.
08:53So, it's open and ready for business,
08:56but it's not safe to go through.
08:57It sounds like you're talking about Waffle House again.
09:01I mean, it's open for business,
09:03but I wouldn't risk it just for a waffle.
09:07So, what's the deal?
09:08Is the Strait open or closed?
09:09Can someone from the administration please explain?
09:12Is the Strait of Hormuz open or closed right now, Ambassador?
09:18Well, you saw real confusion on the Iranians' part.
09:21Regardless, it's the U.S. Navy and President Trump
09:24as the Commander-in-Chief
09:26that decides what ultimately comes in and comes out.
09:30Trump decide what comes in and what comes out
09:32sounds like the White House doctor's description of his diet.
09:36I advise the President that if he ate more greens,
09:38he would spend less time on the toilet,
09:40but ultimately, the President decides
09:42what comes in and what comes out.
09:45Also, I'm sorry, there's confusion on Iran's part.
09:47Then, how do you explain this post
09:49from our President on Friday?
09:51President Trump said on Truth Social
09:53that Iran has agreed to never close
09:55the Strait of Hormuz again.
09:57They did?
09:57Are you sure you were talking to Iran,
09:59or did someone from an unknown number
10:01message you on WhatsApp claiming to be from Iran?
10:04Hello from Iran, cutie.
10:06Are you having a good day?
10:08It would be a lot better
10:09if you'd open the Strait of Hormuz.
10:11If you send me your credit card number,
10:13I can make that happen, smiley face.
10:15I don't have a credit card, but here's Lindsey Graham's.
10:18Thank you, honey, the Strait is open.
10:20Now, do you want to see my big old balloon boobs?
10:24So, three days ago, Trump claimed
10:26not only that the Strait was open,
10:28but that it would never close again.
10:29Then, on Sunday, he posted this.
10:31We're offering a very fair and reasonable deal,
10:34and I hope they take it,
10:35because if they don't,
10:37the United States is going to knock out
10:38every single power plant
10:40and every single bridge in Iran.
10:42No more Mr. Nice Guy.
10:45I'm sorry, was there a Mr. Nice Guy before?
10:48You might as well have said,
10:49no more Mr. Talented Dancer with normal hair.
10:54So, when you said a whole civilization will die tonight,
10:57that was you being Nice Guy,
10:59because you sounded like Bane
11:01after he blows up a football field.
11:03A whole civilization will die tonight, Batman.
11:07Now, many have asked what I've been up to
11:09the past three weeks,
11:10and the answer is I have been working on my Bane impression.
11:12Much like Bane himself,
11:14I've been living in a hole in the desert.
11:15I forfeited all my material possessions
11:17and ate only gruel.
11:18I would wake up at 6 a.m. every day,
11:20and I would spend 18 hours talking like Bane,
11:22and that's why my Bane impression's so good right now.
11:26I only took one day off
11:28so I could go to Disney World with Lindsey Graham.
11:31It was such a bummer, though.
11:33We tried to go on the It's a Small World ride,
11:35but we couldn't,
11:36because even their Strait of Hormuz is closed.
11:40Lindsey was so mad.
11:41He was like,
11:42you better tell them to open it up,
11:44or we're going to rain hellfire down
11:46on those little animatronic .
11:49And I was like,
11:50Lindsey, there are children around.
11:51He was like, I don't give a .
11:54It's up to them.
11:55Do they want a world of laughter or a world of tears?
11:59I'm friends with Bane!
12:02Anyway, the point is,
12:04how did we get to no more Mr. Nice Guy
12:06after days of Trump saying stuff like this?
12:09We have a very good relationship with Iran right now.
12:11This will be a great and brilliant day for the world.
12:17We had some pretty good news 20 minutes ago,
12:22but it seems to be going very well in the Middle East with Iran.
12:25Sir, what was the good news that you had 20 minutes ago?
12:27Having to do with Iran.
12:28Can you tell us anything about what you...
12:30No, but you'll hear about it.
12:31What are you going to be talking about?
12:32I just think it's something that should happen.
12:34It's something that only makes sense to happen,
12:37and I think it will.
12:39We'll see what happens.
12:40Whoa, whoa, whoa!
12:40Stop with all the details!
12:43Why are you being so vague?
12:45You sound like you're giving us clues on the Masked Singer.
12:49It's someone you know, someone who's been in the news recently,
12:51someone who has an exciting new job.
12:53That's right, the cat witch is former Attorney General Pam Bondi.
12:58So we went from good news on Iran to no more Mr. Nice Guy,
13:01and in the span of two days,
13:03this is like the 37th time it's happened.
13:06In fact, Trump keeps calling up reporters
13:07and bull them about a deal that doesn't exist.
13:10I just got off the phone with President Donald Trump.
13:13We're traveling with him here in Las Vegas.
13:15So I called him and got right to the point asking
13:19if Iran agreed to stop enriching uranium,
13:21which is a major sticking point.
13:23He told me that they did agree to that.
13:26I said, did they stop enriching uranium?
13:29They agreed to that.
13:29And he said, they agreed to everything.
13:32Now, if you're thinking to yourself,
13:33oh, my God, this is amazing.
13:35Iran agreed to everything.
13:36The war is over.
13:37Hello! Wake up! Wake up!
13:39You took too many mushrooms again.
13:41You teleported to Waffle House.
13:44Let's go back to the beginning of that clip,
13:46because there was a very telling clue
13:48this was bull right at the top.
13:50I just got off the phone with President Donald Trump.
13:52We're traveling with him here in Las Vegas.
13:54He was in Vegas.
13:56You know what they say,
13:57what the president says happened when he's in Vegas
13:59didn't happen.
14:02In fact, not only have Trump and Iran
14:04not agreed to everything,
14:06they haven't even agreed on whether they're trying to agree.
14:09We're hearing about mixed signals
14:10who's negotiating in Pakistan,
14:12whether or not the Iranians are even going to go,
14:14whether or not the Pakistanis are going to host the talks,
14:18whether the talks are even happening.
14:19In fact, here's how much confusion there is.
14:21At 9 a.m. today, Trump told the New York Post
14:24that Vice President J.D. Vance,
14:25Special Envoy Steve Witkoff,
14:27and Advisor Jared Kushner,
14:28have left the U.S. for Islamabad.
14:31They're heading over there now, Trump said.
14:32And then two hours later at 11 a.m.,
14:35a White House correspondent for CNN tweeted,
14:37Vance's motorcade just pulled up to the White House.
14:40So Trump thought Vance was on a plane to Pakistan,
14:42and then Vance pulled up to the White House.
14:44Imagine how bummed you must be
14:47when you think J.D. Vance is 7,000 miles away,
14:52and then you see him in your driveway.
14:54You're like,
14:58This whole thing's like a 50s sitcom
15:00where Trump tries to date two girls at once
15:02and gets confused.
15:03You're ready?
15:03I thought you were at the drive-in.
15:05I'm Barbara, but I thought Barbara was at the sock-op.
15:07No, she's in Pakistan.
15:10Oh, boy, Donald, you've done it again.
15:15This is what Trump does.
15:17It's what he's done his whole life.
15:18He's bull his way through everything,
15:20but now he's doing it with a war,
15:22and it's not working, and Americans are furious,
15:24and, once again, they're realizing
15:25that the day these weirdos leave office will be...
15:28A great and brilliant day for the world.
15:32This has been A Closer Look.
15:38We'll be right back with Henry Winkler.

16:01Our first guest tonight is an Emmy-winning actor
16:04and TV icon you know from Happy Days,
16:06Arrested Development, and Buried.
16:08He hosts Hazardous History with Henry Winkler,
16:10which airs Sunday nights on the History Channel.
16:12Please welcome back to the show
16:13our very good friend, Henry Winkler, everybody!
16:32Hello, Henry! Welcome back!
16:34Oh, I am so happy to be here.
16:36You have a lot going on.
16:37You have your show, which I'm going to talk to you about.
16:39Knock on wood.
16:39Yeah.
16:39I have a lot going on.
16:41It's very exciting.
16:41It is really exciting.
16:43You're in a movie with Bob Orden.
16:44I am.
16:45And I...
16:46I met him here.
16:47So this, I heard this,
16:48and it didn't seem like it was true,
16:49but talk about this.
16:50I was getting out of the car that brought me here.
16:52Yeah.
16:53I was coming in.
16:54He was going out,
16:55getting into the car that was going to take him
16:57I don't know where.
16:58Right.
16:58And he stopped and said,
17:00I think you're great.
17:01And then we have had dinner since.
17:04And then he called me up
17:05and asked me to be in this movie, Normal.
17:07That's fantastic.
17:08He invited me to Winnipeg.
17:10That's where you shot the film.
17:12Freezing cold.
17:12Yes.
17:13That's what I've heard.
17:14I will say,
17:15even I talked to Bob
17:16during the filming of the show in Winnipeg.
17:18He said,
17:19it is as cold as you think.
17:20Yes.
17:20He also had very nice things to say about
17:22the people he said were lovely.
17:23The restaurants were great.
17:25They're very good restaurants.
17:26But do you,
17:26do you like the cold yourself,
17:28Andrew?
17:28I don't like being cold.
17:29My wife likes cold.
17:31Okay.
17:31We,
17:31we sleep with a lot of air conditioning
17:34and I sleep in fleece.
17:36Really?
17:37Yeah.
17:38Head to toe fleece?
17:39Head to toe.
17:39Wow.
17:40Yeah.
17:41Very romantic.
17:49It's cold.
17:50Yeah.
17:50There was a blizzard.
17:51There was a proper blizzard
17:53when you were there.
17:53And you know,
17:55it was a proper blizzard
17:56and then they added to the blizzard
17:58and then parts of me.
18:00What do you mean they added to the blizzard?
18:02They,
18:03well,
18:03there was snow
18:04and then there was snow.
18:05I see.
18:06Then there were.
18:06By they,
18:07you mean nature.
18:08The nature
18:09and the incredible crew.
18:11Oh,
18:11I see.
18:12So you're sure.
18:13Enhanced.
18:13I see.
18:13Although that's not fair at all.
18:15Yeah.
18:15No,
18:15but it was so cold
18:16that a lot of me said,
18:18we're going home.
18:20Interesting.
18:21Not my feet
18:22because they were in boots.
18:24Got it.
18:24But a lot of me.
18:25So physically you were there,
18:26but like anybody acting with you
18:28would be like,
18:28Henry's not there.
18:29It was hard to concentrate.
18:30Hard to concentrate.
18:31Wow.
18:31It's interesting you met Bob here
18:33and obviously I think,
18:34you know,
18:35you have a lot of fans
18:36from your time in this business
18:37and that led to work.
18:39And is it true that,
18:40you know,
18:40you've worked with Adam Sandler
18:42a lot over the years
18:43and that sort of started
18:44from just a friendly connection.
18:46to thank him
18:47for making me a sentence
18:49in the Hanukkah song.
18:50Yes.
18:51And then he invited me
18:52to his house
18:53where they play basketball
18:55every weekend.
18:56Yeah.
18:56And Brad Pitt was there.
18:58Yeah.
18:58These are famous games.
19:00I almost asked him
19:01for his autograph.
19:02Wow.
19:03But I didn't.
19:04Are you,
19:04when you get invited
19:05to a basketball game,
19:06are you a basketball player?
19:07I am not.
19:08Okay.
19:08But I,
19:10but I,
19:10I was very good
19:12at the,
19:12at the buffet table.
19:14Oh,
19:14interesting.
19:15And you felt like
19:15that was something
19:16they were missing
19:17until you showed up.
19:17Well, you know what?
19:18I don't know,
19:18but at least
19:19I made myself useful.
19:21You know,
19:21in our house,
19:22we are the house of abundance.
19:24Uh-huh.
19:25So at the buffet table,
19:26there is usually
19:27a lot left over.
19:28I've heard this
19:29about your house.
19:31I know friends of mine
19:32have like collaborated
19:33with your son
19:34and they've gone over
19:35and they've worked
19:35on, on scripts there.
19:36Yeah.
19:37And they said it,
19:38they're like,
19:38if you ever have a chance
19:39to collaborate with Max,
19:40do it.
19:40Cause like the food alone,
19:42the food alone.
19:43It's just incredible.
19:43My wife likes to make sure
19:45you're healthy.
19:46Yeah.
19:47I'm well fed.
19:48God bless.
19:49It's fantastic.
19:50Yeah.
19:50Another collaboration
19:51I'm looking forward to.
19:52Larry David is doing a show
19:54about the history
19:55of this nation
19:56coming out in June.
19:57It's true, 250.
19:58250 years.
19:59A sketch show
20:00with Larry David.
20:01A sketch show.
20:01And I was really sad
20:03that I had never been tapped
20:05to do the Larry David show.
20:07The curb.
20:07Yeah.
20:07I feel the same way.
20:08Never get asked.
20:09Yeah.
20:10A lot of people
20:11have done cameos
20:12in that show,
20:12but you and me
20:13outside looking in.
20:15And yet I still watched
20:17when it was on.
20:18That's very,
20:19you know what?
20:20I think it's very noble
20:21of both of us
20:22that we got past the slight
20:24and we enjoyed the show.
20:25Yes.
20:25But then I got asked
20:27to be in this
20:29250th celebration
20:30and I get to play
20:32one of the founding fathers
20:33in a scene with Larry.
20:35And what was it like
20:36to actually get to work
20:37with Larry?
20:38Okay.
20:41I came up,
20:42I ad-libbed a line.
20:44Yeah.
20:44I dared to ad-lib a line.
20:47And we did it
20:48the second time
20:48and I said to Larry,
20:50hey, can I say
20:51that one line again?
20:52And he said,
20:53no.
20:55And I knew immediately
20:57I shouldn't repeat it.
20:58Yeah.
20:59Yeah.
20:59He's built
21:00a wonderful infrastructure
21:01where he can just yell at you
21:03and you don't take it personally.
21:04You don't take it personally.
21:05You kind of know
21:06that's Larry.
21:07Yeah, that's Larry.
21:08Yeah.
21:09This is very recent.
21:10I'm following you
21:11on social media
21:11and you did something
21:12the other day
21:12that really made me laugh,
21:13which is,
21:14so there's this famous
21:15Happy Days episode
21:17where you water ski
21:18and you jump over a shark.
21:21My parents
21:23were very,
21:23very short Germans.
21:25Uh-huh.
21:25And my father suggested,
21:27tell Gary Marshall
21:29you water ski.
21:30I said,
21:31you know what,
21:31I'm not going to tell him that.
21:32So after the hundredth time,
21:34I said,
21:35Gary,
21:35my father wants you
21:36to know I water ski.
21:37Yeah.
21:39And that was all it took.
21:41So it turns out,
21:42it turns out
21:42your father was right.
21:44Like,
21:44all you needed to do
21:45was throw it out
21:45in the universe.
21:46Which really pissed me off.
21:47Yeah.
21:49I like that you added
21:50that they were short Germans.
21:51But no, no, no,
21:52we're talking.
21:53So we could picture,
21:54like, when we picture that,
21:55we need to know
21:55it was a short person.
21:57You could look at
21:58any one of those three dolls.
22:00That's,
22:02that's my father.
22:02That's your father.
22:03Okay, great.
22:04So,
22:05but this was a very famous,
22:06this was a cliffhanger.
22:07Yes.
22:08I guess over the course
22:09of the whole summer.
22:10Yes.
22:10And so somebody wrote,
22:12how many of my friends
22:13can say they waited
22:14for this cliffhanger?
22:15And it's a picture of Fonzie
22:16about to jump the shark.
22:17And then what made me laugh
22:18is you,
22:19you responded me.
22:25And I just,
22:26I have to say,
22:27like, for that person,
22:28like, what,
22:28how their day
22:29must have been made.
22:30Well, you know what?
22:31I, I like the good parts
22:33of Twitter.
22:34Yeah.
22:34I still do.
22:35I call it Twitter.
22:36It's really nice.
22:36Yeah.
22:37Yeah.
22:37I mean,
22:37people forget
22:38it was a really nice way
22:39to interact
22:40and engage with people.
22:42And recently,
22:42I,
22:42all of those people
22:43throwing shade at me,
22:45I looked them up,
22:46you know?
22:46Yeah.
22:47And they have like
22:47four followers.
22:49They're a bot.
22:50Yeah, they're a bot.
22:51They're a bot.
22:53We're not going to let
22:53the bots get to us.
22:55And we've got to
22:56ask you more questions.
22:57More with Henry
22:57right after this.
23:11Dance marathons
23:12soon become
23:12a full-fledged frenzy
23:14and participants
23:15push their bodies
23:16to the limit.
23:18This is an endurance contest.
23:21It is physically
23:22very grueling.
23:23People will be dehydrated.
23:24The idea is to dance
23:26until you literally collapse.
23:28You have to dance
23:30for 45 minutes
23:31of every hour.
23:32When you take a break,
23:34in those 15 minutes,
23:36I guess you can pee.
23:37They eat.
23:38They wash their faces.
23:40They write letters.
23:41They even shave
23:42while dancing.
23:43Welcome back, everybody.
23:44We're here with Henry Winkler.
23:46That was a clip
23:46of the Hazardous History.
23:48Second season.
23:49Congratulations.
23:50So we did...
23:51And this is...
23:52I have to say thank you
23:54because we did
23:56eight episodes.
23:57Yeah.
23:57And then we were picked up
23:58and we're now doing 30.
24:00Oh, my God.
24:01That's fantastic
24:02in this day and age.
24:04Amazing.
24:04Obviously,
24:05that was a clip
24:06of dance marathons.
24:08These are about things
24:08in history
24:09that we might not know
24:10a lot about.
24:11Okay, so these are things
24:13that people thought up
24:14either to make money
24:16or because they thought
24:17they would enhance our life.
24:19Right.
24:19And why not have
24:21an alligator farm
24:22and invite children
24:24to ride them?
24:25Right.
24:25Why not do that?
24:27And then you had the...
24:28Oh, the Cabbage Patch doll.
24:30Yeah.
24:31And the children would feed
24:32the Cabbage Patch doll
24:34and then would get too close
24:36because it never stopped eating
24:38and it took their fingers.
24:40Oh, my God.
24:40So all of a sudden
24:41they were in...
24:42The hair.
24:43They would eat the hair.
24:45What about a flagpole sitting?
24:46I've heard the expression.
24:47I did not know
24:48it was an actual thing.
24:49Shipwreck Kelly
24:50sat for the longest,
24:52I think,
24:53had two heart attacks up there
24:55but would not come down.
24:57And so...
24:58And the idea was
24:59he would sit on a flagpole
25:00and people would watch him
25:02because that was how bad
25:03TV was then?
25:03Some people would...
25:04They would tap dance
25:06on a very small square
25:08on the flagpole
25:10Got it.
25:11Unbelievable.
25:12Skunks as pets.
25:13Oh, yeah.
25:14And adorable.
25:14They went with your shoes,
25:15black and white.
25:16Okay.
25:17You know?
25:18And then, of course,
25:19they gave you rabies.
25:20Oh, yeah.
25:21Well, they went with your shoes.
25:22It was worth the trade-off.
25:23It was.
25:24Well, I'll tell you.
25:25Talk about the exploding dentures.
25:27Oh, okay.
25:28So dentures were either taken
25:31from cadavers...
25:32Okay.
25:32...or made from
25:33very tightly wound cellulose.
25:36Okay.
25:36So if you chopped
25:38your teeth together...
25:40Yeah.
25:40...like in the night,
25:41you know,
25:41you grinded your teeth,
25:43they would set on fire.
25:45Really?
25:45Yes.
25:46Doesn't seem like
25:47it's worth it.
25:48No, it could be
25:48a pizza oven in there.
25:50Yeah.
25:50Yeah.
25:50Well, I guess if you put
25:51a little dough in
25:52before you go to sleep...
25:54Yeah.
25:55I'm not joking.
25:55...grind your teeth
25:56and a little morning pizza.
25:58Yeah.
25:58We have some Broadway stars
26:01coming on next.
26:01Oh, yes.
26:02From chess.
26:02From chess.
26:03And you had a Broadway debut
26:06as a young man,
26:07Henry Wigler.
26:07What was the...
26:08This is a photo of your show.
26:09This was before I went to Hollywood.
26:12Okay.
26:12I auditioned for a play.
26:14That's Regina Bath.
26:15Okay.
26:16A wonderful young actress.
26:17And it's called
26:1842 Seconds from Broadway.
26:20Gotcha.
26:20And what was it like
26:21when you got cast
26:22in 42 Seconds from Broadway?
26:23I was over the moon.
26:24I would imagine.
26:26I was fresh out
26:27of drama school.
26:28Yep.
26:28I had no idea
26:30that I would be on Broadway.
26:32We opened and closed
26:34the same night.
26:35No.
26:37No.
26:37My mother said to everybody,
26:39This is very funny.
26:41What is wider than they like this?
26:43And sorry, real quick,
26:44how tall was she?
26:46Right, right, right.
26:47Yeah.
26:48So she liked it.
26:49Now, did you have any sense
26:50during previews
26:51that it was not going to be
26:52a good show?
26:53No, you never know.
26:53You never know.
26:54Oh, my goodness.
26:54This is going to go.
26:55Could you tell over the course
26:57of that night
26:58that it was going badly?
26:59No.
27:00Okay.
27:00It was only when
27:01we were reviewed
27:02in the New York Times.
27:03Yeah.
27:03The New York Times
27:04doesn't like it.
27:05Yeah.
27:06We're gone.
27:06And you find that out
27:07like that night, correct?
27:09Oh, I was taking off
27:10my makeup.
27:10They were ripping out
27:11the sink.
27:16They couldn't get rid
27:17of me fast enough.
27:18I went to the stage door.
27:21I said,
27:21could I get my hat?
27:22No.
27:23They wouldn't let you
27:24take your hat.
27:25Everybody said that to me.
27:26Larry David,
27:27the guy at the door.
27:28You never left
27:29with your hat.
27:29I never left
27:30with my hat.
27:31Now, I would imagine,
27:32I mean, we're joking
27:33about it now,
27:33but as a young actor,
27:34that just must have been
27:35devastating.
27:36Devastating.
27:36Devastating.
27:36Because you think,
27:38oh, who is going
27:38to hire you
27:39when your Broadway
27:40play closes?
27:42Yeah.
27:42I was at the arena
27:43stage in Washington.
27:44Yep.
27:45And three weeks
27:46into rehearsal,
27:46I was fired.
27:48I cried all the way
27:50back to New York.
27:51I thought,
27:51I will never be hired again.
27:53Unbelievable.
27:54Where are they?
27:58We're glad you're here.
28:00You guys,
28:01this is Henry Winkler.
28:02There's nobody like him.
28:04Hazardous history
28:05with Henry Winkler
28:06for Sunday nights
28:07and I hope this is
28:07going to be right back.
28:08We're going to have
28:09a minute.
28:09I think this is
28:10going to be right back.
28:30Our next guests
28:31are the stars of Chess,
28:33which is playing
28:33at the Imperial Theater
28:34on Broadway.
28:35Please welcome
28:36to the show
28:36Tony winner,
28:37Erin DeVate,
28:38Emmy nominee,
28:39Lea Michele,
28:40and Nicholas Christopher,
28:41everybody.
28:57Please join.
28:58I'm so happy
28:58to have all of you here.
29:00So this is Monday.
29:02Dave, this is an off day
29:03on Broadway.
29:03I'm so happy you're
29:04spending it with us.
29:05But what would you
29:06normally do on a Monday
29:07with the showdown?
29:10Run after our children.
29:11Yeah.
29:12Have a busier day
29:13than we do during...
29:14I know, right?
29:15I mean, so you all have,
29:16you all have children
29:17under five.
29:18Yes.
29:18So that is,
29:19this is a crazy time.
29:21We have five kids
29:21under five
29:22between the three of us.
29:23And so when you guys
29:24are on stage
29:25and everybody's like,
29:26oh my God,
29:26Broadway looks so hard.
29:27It's so much easier
29:28than home, right?
29:28Yeah.
29:29Sometimes I say
29:30that I have to do
29:31a Broadway show
29:31to have quiet time.
29:32I'm in my dressing room
29:34and I'm like,
29:34it's very nice in here.
29:36Yeah.
29:36You know, I have to ask,
29:37I mean, obviously,
29:38you are all accomplished
29:39singers and performers.
29:40Like when you,
29:41like at bedtime,
29:42are you just like
29:43blowing it out
29:43for your kids?
29:44Are you like just
29:44singing through the roof?
29:46My little girls
29:47block their ears
29:48anytime I sing along.
29:49Really?
29:49They do not want
29:50to hear from daddy.
29:51Do you,
29:51is it just because
29:52you're daddy
29:52or do they like
29:53hate music in general?
29:54I,
29:56no, they love music.
29:57Yeah, so it's you.
29:58Yeah, it's me.
30:00I'm giving you nothing.
30:02I'm giving nothing.
30:03You don't give anything
30:03to your kids.
30:04No, no, no, no.
30:04You're basically like,
30:05you got to buy a ticket.
30:06That's your money.
30:07But they don't want more.
30:08If I,
30:08if I tried like
30:10to give like
30:10a real performance,
30:11my son would be like,
30:12what are you doing?
30:12I don't know.
30:13I give,
30:13I give a pretty good bell.
30:15So, you know,
30:16I try to give,
30:16I try to give Disney princess.
30:18Oh, that's interesting.
30:19Right, yeah.
30:19So you'll pander.
30:20Exactly.
30:20Like you will pander to that.
30:21I play,
30:22I play right to the audience.
30:22I just think kids in general
30:24like just don't like
30:25the idea of like
30:25seeing their parents
30:26as performers.
30:28I've told this story,
30:29but I was in a taxi TV once
30:30and there was a clip of me
30:31and my son just reached over
30:32and turned it off.
30:35I think he's like,
30:35I think he's just like,
30:36this is inauthentic.
30:37I do not care for this.
30:40Leah,
30:40I want to congratulate you.
30:42So this is a real
30:42rite of passage.
30:43You got your caricature
30:45at Sardi's.
30:46Yes, I did.
30:46It's like,
30:47it's a Broadway,
30:47it's a real Broadway tradition.
30:49It's a real,
30:49do you,
30:49and what was the first,
30:50how old were you
30:51the first time
30:51you were in Sardi's
30:52and saw these?
30:53I have been going to Sardi's
30:54for 31 years.
30:55I made my Broadway debut
30:57when I was eight years old.
30:58So I've been going
30:59for so many years.
31:00It was such an honor.
31:01Erin's photo is right there.
31:02They cut it out right there.
31:03Oh my God.
31:04But it was amazing.
31:05And fun fact,
31:05my daughter threw up
31:06all over me
31:07right before we went there.
31:08That's so nice.
31:09You don't think about this.
31:10She did not,
31:11and that's the other thing too.
31:12Like when you're like,
31:13this is a big deal for mommy.
31:14They're like,
31:14this doesn't,
31:15is not a big deal for us.
31:16No, not at all.
31:17And then I went
31:17and did a show that night.
31:18I feel like characters
31:20in general,
31:21like they could go
31:22one way or the other.
31:23Are you happy with yours?
31:26You know,
31:27it's a little me.
31:28It's a little Adina.
31:29It's a little Bo.
31:31But she,
31:31she,
31:31we,
31:31she did play my mother.
31:33Yep.
31:33There you go.
31:33So we are,
31:34you know,
31:35related in some way.
31:36Yeah.
31:37But no,
31:37it's great.
31:38Do you like yours?
31:40I do.
31:40I do like mine.
31:41Oh my God.
31:42You guys are such good actors.
31:45But in this moment,
31:46you're really not.
31:55Do you think this is a good representation?
31:58About that one?
31:58I think it is a spitting image
32:00of Lea Michele when I see it.
32:04Did you,
32:04you guys recorded the cast album.
32:06So how,
32:07how long into the run
32:08do you actually like do that?
32:09We did it in January.
32:11So I guess we open,
32:12it's like two months in.
32:13Okay,
32:13gotcha.
32:14And is that like a good time
32:15to sort of,
32:16you know,
32:17obviously these are challenging songs.
32:18Like,
32:19is it good to wait
32:19sort of two months into the run
32:21to do the recording?
32:23There's really no good time.
32:25You know,
32:25I mean,
32:25we're doing eight shows a week.
32:27Right.
32:27We are singing the hardest,
32:29it's an incredibly hard score
32:31that we have to do every night.
32:32And so we were in the recording studio
32:34during the day,
32:35singing the songs over and over again
32:37and then going to the theater that night.
32:38But I think it did come at a good time
32:40right before,
32:41you know,
32:42yeah,
32:42still feeling kind of good
32:44after opening,
32:44I guess.
32:45And you're happy,
32:46obviously,
32:46with the way it turned out.
32:47Like,
32:47as it came out so well,
32:49you know,
32:49the album really rocks.
32:50And I think most importantly,
32:51it's a real representation of our show.
32:54Sometimes you hear,
32:54you know,
32:55cast albums and they're like,
32:56oh,
32:56that's a version of it.
32:58But this really sounds like our show.
32:59So we're,
33:00we're super proud of it.
33:01Is it,
33:01was it,
33:02I mean,
33:02obviously,
33:03you know,
33:03I,
33:03I know from like,
33:04you know,
33:04the company documentary about like the,
33:06you know,
33:07the stress of doing this recording,
33:09like,
33:09was it as stressful as that?
33:11Like knowing that this is the version that will be sort of saved forever.
33:14I had so much fun.
33:16Yeah.
33:16I had so much fun.
33:17That's good to hear.
33:18And it was interesting.
33:19We did this recording in a studio where it's like in a circle.
33:22So a lot of the numbers,
33:23we don't really get to like see everyone,
33:25but we were in this big circle,
33:26just kind of like singing to each other.
33:28And I thought it was thrilling.
33:30I'm,
33:30I'm in love with the music in our show.
33:33It's so much fun.
33:34It's so much fun to sing.
33:35It's so much fun to listen to everyone else perform throughout the night.
33:38So recording,
33:38it was great.
33:39I love how it sounds.
33:41And that's fantastic.
33:42I think we had less chain smoking in the studio.
33:44I think in general,
33:45there's just less chain.
33:46all right.
33:47So,
33:47uh,
33:47obviously,
33:48uh,
33:49this is a show about chess.
33:50Uh,
33:50you guys play,
33:51uh,
33:51chess players,
33:51and I'm very happy to hear that you actually took this seriously and you started playing some
33:56chess in real life.
33:58Yes.
33:58You just playing online.
34:00Yeah.
34:00Lots of chess.com.
34:01Okay.
34:01Gotcha.
34:02Oh yeah.
34:02And was this something that you did?
34:03When you got this part,
34:05you're like,
34:05I'm going to play chess.com and that's going to bring a lot to my character that existed before
34:10there was the internet.
34:10I played when I was a really little kid.
34:12My grandmother actually taught me how to play chess,
34:14but I hadn't played for many years.
34:15And so I joined chess.com and I have some friends that are very,
34:18very good chess players.
34:19So they like to make fun of me and destroy me on there.
34:22But now it's been great because it's been,
34:24you know,
34:24you're doing,
34:25you're in the theater for a couple hours.
34:26You have scenes off.
34:27You do everything not to scroll on your phone.
34:29Right?
34:30So chess.com has kept me from scrolling on my phone.
34:33Oh,
34:33that's fantastic.
34:34And are you getting better?
34:35Slowly,
34:36but surely.
34:36Okay.
34:36That's great.
34:37It's a real two steps forward,
34:39two steps back process.
34:40So I feel like very few people who want to improve at chess actually do the musical.
34:46You know what I mean?
34:47Like,
34:47it's a very interesting way to do it.
34:50But Nick,
34:50you're playing,
34:51you're,
34:52you're the Russian in the show.
34:53I'm the Russian.
34:54And you like,
34:55unlike your cohort here who just like went online,
34:58you actually went to Brighton beach.
35:00Yes.
35:00So you actually went into a Russian community for the purposes of like,
35:03was it like to help with the accent?
35:05It was to help with everything.
35:06I knew nothing about chess and I knew nothing about Russia.
35:08Okay,
35:09great.
35:09So I figured I could get both of them.
35:12If I go to Brighton beach and sit on the boardwalk and play chess with these
35:15amazing chess players.
35:17And then I would open up and be like,
35:18you know,
35:19I'm doing a musical.
35:21I'm playing a Russian.
35:23And then I'll look at that and be like,
35:24what the?
35:26And I was like,
35:27well,
35:27you know,
35:29Pushkin,
35:29who's the godfather of,
35:30of Russian literature was actually half black.
35:33So I was like,
35:34just like Pushkin.
35:35And they would go,
35:36okay.
35:37Wow.
35:37Oh,
35:38so you won them over.
35:39Yeah,
35:39I did win them over.
35:40Is there any,
35:40is there any imbibing of,
35:42of like sort of adult beverages during chess on Brighton beach?
35:47That's the only way to do it.
35:48Really?
35:48Yeah.
35:49You get your little cranberry compote juice,
35:52and then you get a shot of vodka.
35:55And then as the game goes on,
35:56I was getting much,
35:57much better.
35:58It was like three steps forward,
36:00three steps,
36:01and you fall over.
36:01That's fantastic.
36:02Well,
36:02it's an incredible commitment to the job to actually go and travel.
36:07How did you,
36:07was this,
36:08had you guys known each other at all before this?
36:11I'd known Aaron throughout the years here and there.
36:13We'd never met,
36:14we met outside of an elevator once a couple of years ago.
36:17But no,
36:18we all just kind of came together really.
36:20That's fantastic.
36:20It must be such an incredible thing to go through together as performers with a show like this.
36:26I can only imagine how,
36:27how connected you feel now.
36:29I want to ask Nick,
36:31explain what's going on here with this photo.
36:34So,
36:36I know what happened.
36:39I was born in Bermuda and my father is the town crier of Hamilton in Bermuda.
36:44And my mother made his first uniform and out of the scraps of his uniform,
36:48because I wanted to be just like my dad when I was little,
36:50she made that,
36:51that,
36:51that uniform.
36:52Now,
36:52so a town crier seems like a olden days job.
36:55Yeah.
36:55This is a job your father has to this day.
36:58Yes.
36:59Okay.
36:59And he is not performing in Hamilton,
37:02the musical.
37:03Yeah.
37:04He's performing at Hamilton,
37:05the city in Bermuda.
37:06Got it.
37:06And now it's an official position.
37:09And so like when Queen Elizabeth came to the Island back in the nineties,
37:12he was the one to show her around.
37:14Wow.
37:16King Charles is,
37:17is coming to Bermuda at the end of the month.
37:19And,
37:19and he's sort of like an ambassador for our country.
37:22That's really fantastic.
37:24And,
37:24and does he actually like when the,
37:26like when a queen or king comes,
37:28does he ring the bell?
37:29Oh yeah.
37:29Yeah.
37:30And even not,
37:30even,
37:31even if he's just passing by you on the street,
37:33he brings it again.
37:35Has he seen chess as your dad comes?
37:38Oh yes.
37:38Yes.
37:38And does a town crier sort of announced over the course of the show,
37:41how it's going?
37:42Well,
37:44he should.
37:45Well,
37:45he should.
37:45My dad is like six,
37:46six and a very loud personality.
37:49So he doesn't even need his bell half the time to announce his presence.
37:52How do you,
37:53are you,
37:54how do you guys feel about knowing when friends or family are in the house?
37:58Are you somebody who wants to know anytime?
38:00I love it.
38:00You love knowing.
38:01It was actually really funny when Nick's mom came the other day and we were walking off stage after one
38:06of the scenes that we did.
38:07And he said,
38:07my mom's just waving at me from the orchestra.
38:11I was like,
38:12I said,
38:12you mean during the show,
38:14during our scene?
38:14He goes,
38:15yeah,
38:15she just keeps waving her arm up at me from the audience.
38:19And he has very,
38:20very tall parents.
38:21Yes.
38:21And I have very short parents,
38:22so I can never see them out there,
38:23but I thought that was very sweet.
38:25She wanted you to know she was there so bad.
38:27That's fantastic.
38:28What about you?
38:29Do you like to know?
38:29I want to know when everybody's there.
38:31Yeah.
38:31I want to know all the things.
38:32Some people don't want to know,
38:33but I want to know always.
38:34Are you,
38:34how,
38:35how well can you see like faces and reactions?
38:38Like,
38:38I see everybody.
38:40Gotcha.
38:41I see everybody.
38:42I love,
38:43I see everyone.
38:44I like to make eye contact and I'll be like,
38:46oh,
38:46this person was wearing this shirt.
38:48It had this on it.
38:49And I'm like very,
38:50yeah,
38:51I really like that.
38:51I somehow see no one.
38:52You always tell us.
38:53I see everyone.
38:53Gotcha.
38:54Yeah.
38:54Is,
38:54are you more prone to like,
38:56if you feel like somebody who's like super enjoying the show,
38:58do you lock in on them?
38:59Or if you see someone,
39:00okay,
39:00gotcha.
39:01If they,
39:01if they look like they're not,
39:03they're like,
39:03they don't really know where that I'm like,
39:05I'm going to win you over right now.
39:08We are going to connect.
39:09I love it.
39:10That's a true performer spirit.
39:12That's fantastic.
39:13You guys,
39:14congratulations on the show and the cast.
