What if the internet didn’t live on Earth anymore?

Tech giants and startups are exploring a radical idea—placing data centers in space. By deploying servers aboard satellites in low Earth orbit, companies aim to tap into near-limitless solar energy and eliminate the need for water-intensive cooling systems.

Unlike Earth-based facilities, space data centers could operate in freezing cosmic temperatures while receiving up to eight times more solar power. The concept involves constellations of satellites flying in sync with the Sun, connected through high-speed laser communication systems.

But the vision comes with major risks.

From surviving rocket launches to enduring intense radiation, solar flares, and even collisions with space debris, these orbiting servers face extreme challenges. Maintenance and long-term costs also raise serious questions about feasibility and environmental impact.

Is this the future of cloud computing—or an expensive gamble?

00:04Installing data centers in space would make it possible to run them on solar energy
00:09without needing water for cooling since the cosmos is freezing cold.
00:14Most of the projects share a similar architecture.
00:18The computer servers are mounted on a constellation of low-orbit satellites

00:26In this way they would receive eight times more solar energy than on Earth.
00:31The satellites would be very close to one another, just a few hundred meters apart,

00:39Data transmission to Earth would be provided by lasers.
