00:01A Dutch climate activist group launched a new court case against Shell on Tuesday in
00:06the Netherlands.
00:07It's demanding that the British energy major end its investments in new oil and gas projects.
00:13Shell and a number of its peers want to capitalise on soaring profits from oil and gas sales
00:19following the outbreak of the Ukraine war.
00:21It has scaled back its renewable energy operations and weakened emissions targets.
00:27It told investors last year it was targeting 4-5% annual increase in liquefied natural gas
00:33sales over the next five years and planned to sustain material oil output beyond 2030.
00:40The lawsuit was filed by Friends of the Earth Netherlands.
00:44Shell called the case unreasonable after Friends of the Earth announced plans to file the legal
00:49action last year.
00:51It said the activist group ignored the global economy's need for fossil fuels.
00:55Shell did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
01:00The lawsuit builds on another case brought by the activists that's been making its way
01:05through the Dutch courts for several years.
01:07In that case, an appeals judge in 2024 ruled Shell had a responsibility to reduce emissions
01:14emissions and to protect people from global warming.
