00:00The couple, convicted of gross indecency at a Penang cemetery last month and sentenced to one year in jail, were
00:07released today after the Georgetown High Court reduced their sentence.
00:11Justice Rofia Muhammad upheld the conviction of M. Jagadesen, 58, and Halila Abubakar, 37, but ordered their jail term to
00:20run from their arrest on March 23 until today, effectively reducing the sentence to 28 days in custody.
00:26The pair had pleaded guilty at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court to gross indecency at the Batu Gantong Chinese Cemetery on
00:34March 22, an offence under Section 377D of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two
00:41years.
00:42Their lawyer, Naran Singh, had sought a review of the sentence, arguing it was excessive.
00:46The FBI prosecutor, Muna Jagvar, said the prosecution accepted the defense's representations, which had proposed that the conviction be maintained,
00:55but with a reduced sentence.
