01:46friday was the end and that hug on the sidelines with stefan draymond signified that you know this is

01:58a long season there's a lot going on and they would still be really surprised if steve left steve and

02:05we sit here again mark right now i think that's where i come down i i just would be a

02:11still if steve walked away from steve but there's no question there were some seeds that were being
02:19planted and i think it's going to come down to when steve kerr and joe lakeup sit down whenever
02:25that is and steve gave the timeline it was a week or two at some point here in the near

02:31going to discuss what's going on and i think both sides have to like what is being said so
02:38the speculation is going to continue until we figure out something for sure but let me just say
02:46this as we get started here today if kerr decides to leave and the warriors don't bring him back i
02:52i think they are uh they've got a gigantic hole that i don't know who the hell is going to

04:30to steph and and to draymond i think there's got to be an open communication on both sides and only

05:30and it never came all the way to the forefront because uh it it didn't get to that level but
05:38to go from steve kerr who is beloved across the league and has earned everything he's gotten
05:47for decades in the nba to todd golden or anybody else i mean dibs truly the only guy as i

05:54there thinking about this the last couple days who would fit if you could just plug him in but it

06:45gonna say hey you know let's let's go do this i mean if you are changing coaches guys you really
06:51should change everything and almost everyone not named steph curry and i don't know if everybody's
06:58got the stomach for that right now given how this season ended but it i was sitting in there
07:04on friday night and my biggest takeaway in all of it was steph and draymond acknowledging in the
07:11moment that they are not close to a title that there has to be a shift in how they build

07:17next couple years worth of teams and i mean draymond was basically sitting there saying i want to come
07:22back i don't know if they're going to want me to come back it revolves always around steph but that
07:28was the first time in years i have heard from either of those guys and it wasn't hey the standard
07:34standard is the standard around here and we're going to continue to push for a championship
07:38they know they are far away and if you know that and you make a coaching switch i think this

08:29i think everybody's trying to figure that out mark because as we walked into that let's take friday
08:36night in phoenix that was such a high internally in the organization after that clipper game i mean
08:43kerr had the line of the night which is we're us again for one night we're champions and that's what
08:48it felt like guys they were so happy it felt like they had beat the rockets again it felt like

08:56were in houston and everybody was partying and they couldn't believe that they had pulled that off at
09:02the end and this is what it was like in the good old days and you got to phoenix and
09:08you watch that
09:09scene at the uh at the end of the bench and you saw kerr huddling everybody around and then you
09:16listened to what he said and i i give you this also for context when we're sitting there asking
09:24draymond and and he was giving his answers then we're asking steph mark at one point steph looked
09:30at us and was like what did what did he just say in here he's i think the exact quote
09:36was man he must
09:37have been dropping some bars like you guys are throwing stuff at me that i don't even know i think

09:43was such an eye opener uh for these players who have been around kerr for so long and and like
09:50steph
09:50said he left the door open but i don't think anybody was expecting hey that could be it and steph

09:56he was jolted by all of it so i think the reality of it mark is what's changed in that

10:03possibility certainly but nobody thought it would be that outward and for kerr to bring everybody
10:09together and have that human moment and then be as open after the game as he was it just left

10:16door open for everything now i'm not sitting here again saying hey it's over i know i saw it the
10:22draymond clip i know uh his opinion is that that's probably it as far as steven and this team goes
10:29but i do
10:30think if everybody sits down whenever that conversation is and and they say let's clear it all out let's get
10:37everything out in the open and they realign i mean that kerr mentioned the word alignment i think that's a
10:43crucial buzzword in all of this if you don't have both parties aligned then you're not going to have
10:49a marriage that continues but if steph wants it to happen and lakeup is willing to put the money up

10:56it to happen whatever that number is in steve kerr's mind and kerr after some reflection says i just can't
11:03walk away from steph and draymond and i'll i'll kind of do some things differently and and maybe we
11:10can get a different coach in here too and and have some uh different style potentially uh over the next
11:17year or two i still think it it has a chance to continue but it was the reality setting in
11:24for
11:24everybody that this thing really might be done and if you remove kerr guys again it's going to be a
11:32a big adjustment for everybody in that organization whenever that day comes yeah and it would totally
11:40feel like a reboot at that point even if steph and draymond were still here and i wonder nick if
11:45the
11:45uncertainty around steve kerr isn't part of why steph and draymond didn't do their exit interviews today
11:52i think at least in the last couple years dibs and i can't speak to it completely because i obviously
11:58just came back the beginning of this year this is kind of the way it's been in that the last

12:04happens those guys were up there for you know 15 minutes and they answered whatever questions came
12:10their way but they're they're so advanced and so much older that they don't need to be sitting there
12:17on the day when everybody else uh does their interview so i know that on the surface on paper people
12:24looked at that and said huh why why are they doing it why why isn't kerr doing another interview why
12:31isn't dunleavy up there with steph and draymond i think they said everything they needed to say
12:36as far as the dunleavy thing i'm not sure what else he was going to add today because all he
12:42was going to
12:43be asked is hey do you think kerr is coming back and he could have sat up there for 20
12:47minutes and said
12:48i don't know we'll sit and talk to him uh over the next week or two so i'm i'll be
12:53much more curious
12:54to see what he says after uh whatever happens happens and and that will happen at some point and
13:01dibs as far as kerr goes he he can't say anything else at this point what it boils down to
13:08is him
13:10sitting down with joe lakeham and those two discussing everything they want to put out on the table so
13:16that will come and and we'll get the answer at that point but again i i can't stress this enough
13:24even as we're having this conversation if kerr leaves and maybe he's just done and i i think all
13:30three of us agreed all year there were times where he was tired and he looked burned out because i
13:35i
13:35remember talking to him a month ago not even and and he really enjoyed the day-to-day process still
13:42so did something happen in the last couple weeks only he knows and only he'll share that whenever
13:48he wants to or he doesn't but if you take kerr out of the setup that they have
13:55i i man i i mean change happens in the nba uh it's gonna be a lot different whenever it
14:03does but
14:03universally the feeling in the league and certainly within the organization was
14:07steve will go as long as steph goes the idea that steph will still be out there and steve kerr
14:15won't
14:15be there is jarring to a lot of people and i would only say to warriors fans who say oh
14:21man it's past
14:22time for kerr to be gone they need a new voice good luck to you good good luck because that
14:29guy i sat
14:30and listened to all those interviews all day long he has the respect of the room and it's not to
14:36say
14:36another coach can't come in and have that but he has it right now and more than anything he's got
14:41the respect of the one guy who matters the most in that room and it's steph kerr nick i'm also

14:48amazed by the trickle down effect of everything you're talking about now and here's another spot
14:53where i really felt it last thursday warrior fans were like porzingis one year 20 million done like
15:02we're in on christop's porzingis then one more game happens he gets hurt in it he says afterward that
15:09he's questioning his own future and all of a sudden it feels like it's not even on the top 10
15:14of the
15:14priority list for the warriors this offseason what happened with everyone's thought about christop's
15:22in in in the last three days in the span of a blink of an eye mark he became a
15:28mega afterthought
15:29because it starts with kerr then you have to decide what happens with draymond do you do you bring him
15:38back or does he fill that role as that last real piece to get anybody in return in in some
15:47kind of
15:47larger deal i think they still like porzingis i think they'd like to bring him back but i'm with
15:52you completely i mean it happened quickly and it happened as soon as kerr brought everybody together
15:59everybody being steph and draymond and had that public show of hey this could be it and i i think
16:08it's it's not only is it spot on what you're talking about but it's what we're going to be talking
16:11about the next few weeks as this all unfolds guys this team just isn't good enough and if you're
16:19really going to have the reboot the only person that you feel comfortable maintaining into the
16:26future and building with this step that's it there is a chance in all of this that in a couple

16:33months we're sitting here and the warriors have a new coach draymond is on a different team the
16:40periphery players i mean horford sounds like he wants to play he sounds like he really loved the
16:46bay and he sounds like he wants to come back but you know horford hadn't been here that long pause
16:51sounds like he wants to come back but what does the money look like do they want to bring it

16:55at that kind of rate year to year this this this team could look dramatically different i mean here's
17:05another name i'll throw out at you mark that we haven't even mentioned yet jimmy butler jimmy
17:10butler was in the locker room in phoenix on friday night kicking a softball around uh like he was
17:17namar with gary payton's nephews and he's enjoying it and all i kept thinking to myself is man jimmy
17:25really looks comfortable here he looks like he's found the niche that he was hoping for after miami and
17:32the blow up in minnesota and jimmy has to be sitting here thinking the last couple days what
17:38the hell is going on because everybody thought there was one more year before all these questions
17:44appeared and after kerr brought everything out to the forefront there's a good chance that
17:49this thing looks dramatically different so uh how it all plays out we'll see but uh what what i would
17:57say moving this whole thing forward is if you're kawaii or you're janice or you're one of these
18:02veteran guys that we've talked about through time and they make this change and steve kerr is not there
18:08well then who the hell wants to come here right now it would be steph and a bunch of younger
18:14guys that
18:14you would try to grow over those last few years of however long he wants to extend his career
18:20and the shift would happen pretty quickly uh and if they make that switch and try to wedge somebody
18:27else in there again you can wish all you want i think if you're going to make a coaching switch
18:34you have to make a gigantic organizational shift in the players that you are bringing in to play
18:41alongside steph curry at the end here and i agree with exactly what you're saying and so i guess the
18:47next question would be which way do you think they go because if you do that organizational shift if
18:53you bring in a new coach then you kind of have to find a way to get rid of vets
18:57and get in picks and
18:58young players is that more difficult than just trying to stay the course is that more likely that they just
19:04run it back one more time the easiest way dibs is to run it back no doubt and you can
19:11say okay well
19:12we'll bring somebody in and here's draymond and steph and jimmy will come back you know maybe around
19:18the all-star break maybe moody comes back at some point next year and uh the pod situation works
19:25itself out again that's a solid team i can only speak uh for myself watching this though uh day to
19:33day
19:34if you are making the coaching change i think you have to make the coaching change looking ahead two or
19:41three years there has to be an acknowledgement in that hey guys we did everything we could
19:46the injuries derailed us this year and we're just not good enough the way we're constructed it's what
19:53dibs frankly is what steph was hinting at i thought one of his best answers the other night in phoenix
19:58was he's like all we talk about for four or five years is championship championship championship he's
20:03like we have to go back to the drawing board and rebuild how we go at this and steph has
20:09said a
20:10hundred times he only wants to play in one uniform in one place i take him at his word but
20:17there also
20:17has to be that honest conversation of steph what's best for us right now is to build with you and
20:24we have
20:25to continue this next phase especially if if steve kerr decides he's done and and that marriage ends
20:33so i think if you're going to make the switch you have to make the switch all the way the
20:39mistake to
20:40me would be if you make a coaching switch and you say hey let's just run it back with this
20:45new guy and
20:46see what happens they are not good enough the way they're constructed and if you believe if you're
20:53lake of and dunleavy that there's more hope on the horizon you sit down with steph and say hey
20:59we want you here you're our guy and we want you to know exactly what we're doing and you have
21:06to see
21:07if he wants to sign off on all that uh if he doesn't that's a whole different conversation but
21:12dibs i think to your question and to the point yeah there has to be universal belief that this is
21:19the
21:19right time and direction for the organization to go and if you're them and you make this switch
21:26i think that's absolutely the move that you have to make uh there he is nick fredell nick that's a
21:32nice cubs hat uh we can commiserate cubs and giants both in fourth place sorry about that so far
