00:00A newly released report shows an overall drop in crime in Germany in 2025, despite an increase in murder, rape
00:08and knife crime, which police authorities say remain a major concern.
00:13Police recorded around 5.5 million crimes last year, a fall of 5.6 percent compared to 2024, of which
00:21some 29,000 were knife-related offenses, equivalents to roughly 80 incidents per day.
00:28While violent crime fell by 2.3 percent last year, sexual offenses increased significantly, rising by 8.5 percent to
00:3714,500 cases.
00:39According to official figures, the overall drop in crime was largely driven by changes to drug laws.
00:46Officials say the decline is mainly due to the partial legislation of cannabis in April 2024, which reduced the number
00:54of drug-related offenses.
00:56They, however, caution that this makes direct comparisons with previous years less reliable.
01:02Other various factors discussed in the report as possible causes for the decline include a decline in migration.
01:09In 2025, the number of foreign suspects fell by around 3 percent.
01:14German authorities say it was important to note that the statistics only cover police investigations
01:20and no conclusions can be drawn about actual convictions or the actual number of offenders.
