The startup company Morfo is using AI to help its reforestation efforts. Its drones can cover much more ground than humans. AI is helping the team determine which areas to target and what set of seeds to plant.

00:00Just a few months ago, the ground in this Brazilian test field was rock-hard, compacted by cattle farming.
00:08Then the area was replanted using a drone, in a matter of minutes.
00:15Today the area is transformed, grass, bushes and small trees have brought the land back to life.
00:21The Franco-Brazilian start-up Morfu plans high-tech reforestation on a massive scale, starting in the Amazon.
00:30One drone can spread about 50 hectares a day.
00:34It means two people, one drone, is about 1,000 hectares a month.
00:41It's a huge gap when you compare it to the traditional way of drone restoration.
00:48A person can manage only about one hectare a day.
00:51Drones, on the other hand, can reach even the most remote and inaccessible areas.
00:56There they drop small seed bombs, filled with seeds, nutrients and moisture.
01:02With the help of AI, Morfu evaluates drone imagery, soil samples and large quantities of data.
01:08The team maps out surrounding environment and soil fertility, as well as vital resources like water.
01:17This helps them decide which plants will thrive in which specific spot.
01:23While currently focused on South America, the company plans to expand to West Africa and Southeast Asia in the future.
