00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the 10 best horror movies
00:10centered around ancient curses. The movie must be about some kind of tangible curse,
00:15whether that be a magical spell or object, and not a random demonic possession. So movies like
00:20The Exorcist will not be included.
00:22Why this girl doesn't make sense.
00:27Number 10. Thinner
00:29This diet you're on, what is it? I've tried all the others. I might as well try this one.
00:36I don't think you'd like it, Henry. In fact, I don't think you'd like it at all.
00:42Starting us off is a hex that turns diet culture into pure terror. In this Stephen King adaptation,
00:47an arrogant lawyer kills a Romani woman with his car, but never faces any consequences. Well,
00:53legal consequences, at least. He cannot escape the victim's grieving father,
00:57who strokes the man's cheek and hexes him with the Thinner curse.
01:10This ancient blood magic forces the lawyer's body to rapidly consume itself until there's nothing left.
01:16The true terror here comes from the knowledge that you will die,
01:19and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it as you slowly waste away.
01:23There are no ghosts to bust or monsters to shoot. Thinner is body horror driven by karmic vengeance,
01:29proving that justice usually finds a way to balance the scales.
01:32Ain't about bringing back the dead, white man. Justice, it's about justice.
01:38Number 9. The Autopsy of Jane Doe
01:50This claustrophobic mystery blends clinical science with supernatural dread. When two coroners
01:55begin dissecting a dead young woman, they uncover a series of baffling internal mutilations. It turns
02:01out Jane Doe is actually a victim of the brutal Salem witch trials from the 17th century. The
02:07twist?
02:11The puritan rituals inflicted by her captors functioned as a dark blood curse, turning an
02:16innocent girl into an immortal conduit for malicious vengeance. Her body itself becomes a
02:21supernatural trap, and anyone who attempts to cut into her triggers a hex of reality-warping terror.
02:26It forces men of logic to confront a wrathful evil they simply cannot explain away with a scalpel.
02:32That's exactly what you expected from the title, right?
02:35Whatever the hell happened in here, we are way past possible.
02:41Number 8. Tarot
02:49Never mess with someone else's deck. In this modern teen hit,
02:54a group of college friends makes the fatal mistake of using a creepy antique deck for their astrology
02:59readings. Unbeknownst to them, the cards are bound by a death curse, cast all the way back in 1798
03:06by a vengeful astrologer. What gives this particular hex its bite is the personalized fatalism. The magic
03:21doesn't just kill you randomly, it uses the exact card you pulled to manifest a specific demonic entity
03:28designed to hunt you down. It turns the fun concept of predicting the future into a literal death sentence.
03:34Tarot traps its characters in a brutally ironic destiny, and they are unable to outrun the
03:39fates they have sealed for themselves.
03:41What the hell?
03:42You guys, we have to go back to the police!
03:44What are they gonna do? I mean, we're getting picked off by a… I mean, what even was that?
03:48Number 7. Oculus
03:50Hello again.
03:59Meet the Lacer Glass, an antique mirror proving that reflections can be deadly. Dating back centuries,
04:06this ornate artifact doesn't summon monsters from the underworld. Instead, it houses a dark power that
04:12infects the minds of anyone spending too much time nearby. The terror of Oculus lies entirely in its
04:19psychological warfare. It completely distorts reality, making victims see and hear things that
04:32aren't there, and ultimately tricking them into brutally murdering each other or themselves. The
04:41turns your own brain into the ultimate weapon against you. You are left entirely defenseless,
04:46while the mirror quietly watches you bleed out on the floor.
04:49Let's stop! It wasn't me! It wasn't me! It was the mirror! It was the mirror!
04:55Number 6. Exuma. South Korean cinema delivers a phenomenal tale of generational trauma and forbidden
05:01ground. When a wealthy family experiences a horrific bloodline affliction, they hire shamans to relocate
05:07their ancestors' grave. But, unearthing the coffin triggers something far worse. Because, of course,
05:12it does. They discover a malicious spell buried beneath the dirt. A cursed iron stake used to sever the
05:19spiritual spine of the land itself. This hex mixes deep historical wounds with raw atmospheric dread,
05:25demonstrating how sins of the past literally poison the earth beneath our feet. Pretty smart, huh?
05:31Naturally, releasing the ancient Japanese entity hidden in the grave unleashes a primal nightmare
05:36straight out of folklore. It goes to show that some dirt should remain undisturbed,
05:41no matter how much money is on the line. Number 5. Drag Me to Hell.
05:45No way! Look, I'm a vegetarian. I volunteered at the puppy shelter, for Christ's sake. I don't go around
05:51killing animals. You will be surprised what you'll be willing to do when the Lamia comes for you.
05:56Sam Raimi brought audiences a loud, gross, and relentless ride with Drag Me to Hell. After a bank loan
06:03officer denies an extension to an old Romani woman, she is attacked and given a blood hex
06:07bound to a simple button. The rules dictate that she will be tormented by a creepy demon called Lamia
06:14for three days before being dragged to Hell for eternity.
06:17This side, the soul of Christine Brown, we will feast upon it as she fester something brave.
06:25Now, that doesn't sound like a very good deal. We watch Christine desperately and often hilariously
06:31try to break the rules of the supernatural contract in order to save her soul. It's a glorious mixture of
06:36the campy horror comedy style that made Raimi a legend of the genre. It was a glorious return
06:42to this old school form following the Spider-Man trilogy. Number 4. Sinister.
06:51It's a symbol associated with the worship of a pagan deity. A deity? What kind of deity? A very obscure
06:59one, dating back to Babylonian times, named Bagul, the Eater of Children. Consistently ranked as one of the
07:06scariest movies of the 2010s, Sinister introduces a truly disturbing concept. A true crime writer moves
07:12his family into a murder house, and discovers a box of horrific snuff films in the attic. On the
07:18films is disturbing footage of children brutally murdering their own parents. But, as poor Ellison
07:24eventually learns, these reels are actually corrupted artifacts. Watching the footage acts as an
07:43invocation, summoning a Babylonian deity named Bagul, who consumes the souls of children. This lore
07:49weaponizes Ellison's own morbid curiosity against his family. The more he investigates the unsettling
07:55imagery, the deeper the curse sinks its hooks into his home. Murderous children are inherently creepy,
08:01and nothing is scarier than that danged lawnmower scene. It still haunts our nightmares.
08:10Number 3. Pet Sematary
08:12Sometimes, dead is better. The Indians knew that. They stopped using that burial ground,
08:19and the ground went sour. Don't think about doing it, Lewis. The place gets holier, but the place is evil.
08:28Another Stephen King classic, another ancient curse. Lewis Creed makes the tragic decision
08:34to bury his dead son in a Native American burial ground hidden deep in the Maine woods. Long ago,
08:40this ground was corrupted, and now holds the power to resurrect the dead. But, like Judd says,
08:46sometimes dead is better. The land doesn't resurrect the dead as humans. Instead,
09:04it completely strips away their humanity, and they return as soulless husks. That's at the best of
09:09times. At worst, they come back as killers. It manipulates a parent's deepest grief, tricking them
09:15into choosing an unnatural abomination over the natural process of letting go. This psychological
09:21toll, combined with the visceral horror of murderous babies, makes Pet Sematary an undeniable classic.
09:27Has anyone ever buried a person up there? Christ on his throne, no. Whoever would.
09:35Number two. The Mummy. Look, the sacred spells which protect the soul in its journey to the
09:41underworld have been chipped off of the coffin. So Imroptep was sentenced to death not only in this
09:47world, but in the next. While modern remakes of The Mummy lean heavily into explosive action,
09:52Boris Karlov's haunting original remains a triumph of creeping dread. An arrogant archaeological expedition
09:59ignores a stark warning carved into an Egyptian casket, and they foolishly read from the mystical
10:05Scroll of Thoth. This monumental mistake triggers an ancient hex and instantly awakens the titular
10:20Imhotep. The Mummy is legendary because of its sheer historical weight and relentless patience. There
10:25are no loud jump scares to be found here. Instead, it relies on the chilling realization that a consequence
10:31written thousands of years ago can still reach out to destroy modern men who dare to disturb the dead.
10:37Death, eternal punishment for anyone who opens this casket in the name of Amon Ra, the king of the gods.
10:53Good heavens, what a terrible curse!

11:29Number 1. The Evil Dead
11:37Claiming the top spot is the most chaotic lore in horror history. Five friends vacation in a remote cabin,
11:44and stumble upon the Nataram de Manto, an ancient Sumerian book of the dead bound in human flesh.
11:50When they foolishly play a tape recording of the translated incantations, they unwittingly trigger
11:55a devastating plague upon the woods.
11:58A few pages warn that these enduring creatures may lie dormant, but are never truly dead.
12:04They may be recalled to active life through the incantations presented in this book.
12:09It is through recitation of these passages that the demons are given license to possess the living.
12:16What makes this the ultimate cinematic hex is its sheer, unrelenting violence. It does not wait patiently or
12:22haunt the shadows. It violently possesses the characters one by one, and turns best friends
12:28and lovers into hideous deadites. The Evil Dead traps its survivors in a claustrophobic nightmare,
12:34where the only escape from the ancient spell is gruesome dismemberment and buckets of blood.
