About:
Venom is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The first film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), it was directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, and stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom, alongside Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. In the film, Eddie, a struggling journalist, gains superpowers after becoming the host of Venom, an alien symbiote whose species plans to invade Earth.

Following Venom's appearance in Spider-Man 3 (2007), Sony Pictures attempted to develop a spin-off film based on the Venom character, which was stalled due to issues with the company's ongoing Spider-Man franchise. In March 2016, work began on a new version that would start a new shared universe featuring the non-Spider-Man Marvel characters that the studio possessed film rights to. Sony also originally intended for the Venom film to share the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), but ultimately distanced the film from Spider-Man. Sony's Columbia Pictures produced the film in association with Marvel Entertainment. In March 2017, Rosenberg and Pinkner were set to write, with Fleischer and Hardy added in May; Marcel subsequently joined to rewrite the script. Filming took place from October 2017 to January 2018 in Atlanta, New York City, and San Francisco. The film was primarily inspired by the comic book miniseries Venom: Lethal Protector (1993) and the story arc "Planet of the Symbiotes" (1995). Ludwig Göransson was hired to compose the film's score, marking his second Marvel film after Black Panther (2018).

Venom premiered at the Regency Village Theater on October 1, 2018, and was released in the United States on October 5. Despite generally negative reviews from critics, Hardy's performance and his character's relationship with Venom were praised, and the film became the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2018, earning over $856 million worldwide and setting several box office records for an October release. Two sequels have been released: Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and Venom: The Last Dance (2024).

00:00Hey!
00:10It looks like Sony isn't done with Venom at all, and honestly, that's not too surprising because the character has
00:16been a huge success for them over the years.
00:18But now things are getting interesting again, because there's a new Venom movie in development, and this time it's taking
00:24a different route.
00:24Even though Tom Hardy's live-action trilogy wrapped up with Venom The Last Dance in 2024, the studio clearly isn't
00:32ready to move on from the symbiote just yet.
00:35Instead, they're bringing Venom back in an animated form, and Hardy is still involved in some way, which raises a
00:41bunch of questions about what this project is really going to look like.
00:45You're in my head, because you're just a parasite.
00:48Parasite!
00:52What makes this even more interesting is the creative team behind it.
00:56The new animated Venom movie is being developed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who recently had a major
01:03success with Final Destination Bloodlines.
01:06That film did really well at the box office, so it makes sense that Sony would trust them with something
01:11as big as Venom.
01:13At the same time, they're not just directing, they're also producing, which means they'll have a strong influence over the
01:19direction of the movie.
01:20And because Sony is opening up a writer's room to start shaping the script, it shows that they're still in
01:26the early stages, trying to figure out exactly what story they want to tell.
01:30Now, even though Hardy's involvement has been confirmed, it's still not clear what his role actually is.
01:36He could just be producing, which would make sense, since he's been heavily involved in shaping the character in the
01:42live-action films.
01:43But there's also a strong possibility that he might voice Venom in the animated movie, which would help maintain some
01:49continuity with the version fans already know.
01:52That kind of connection could be really important, because even though this is a new format, audiences are still attached
01:59to Hardy's take on Eddie Brock.
02:01At the same time, Venom as a character has a long history beyond just Hardy's movies.
02:06Before this trilogy, he appeared in Spider-Man 3 back in 2007, played by Topher Grace, and since then he's
02:14shown up in a bunch of animated shows as well.
02:16Over the years, the character has evolved from being a straight-up villain to more of an anti-hero, and
02:22that flexibility is part of what makes him so interesting.
02:25So, moving into animation actually gives the creators a lot more freedom to explore different sides of Venom without being
02:32limited by live-action constraints.
02:35What's also worth noting is that this isn't the only Spider-Man-related project Sony is working on right now.
02:41They've got multiple animated films in development, including spin-offs focused on Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk.
02:48So, clearly, they're trying to expand this animated universe in a big way, especially after the massive success of their
02:55Spider-Verse movies.
02:56But here's where things get a bit confusing, because it's not clear whether this new Venom movie will actually be
03:02connected to that universe, or if it's going to stand on its own.
03:05There's a chance that this animated Venom project could come out after Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is
03:12set to wrap up Miles Morales' trilogy.
03:14If that's the case, Sony might use this movie as a way to explore new stories in animation once that
03:21saga is complete.
03:22But since there's no official release date yet, everything is still pretty uncertain.
03:27Now, when it comes to the story itself, there's a really exciting possibility that fans have started talking about.
03:33The ending of Venom The Last Dance teased a major villain named Null, also known as the King in Black.
03:40In the comics, Null is basically the god of the symbiotes, and his storyline is huge in scale.
03:46It involves massive battles, symbiote dragons, and a full-on invasion of Earth.
03:51So if Sony decides to adapt that storyline in animation, it could be something truly epic.
03:57And honestly, animation might be the perfect way to do it, because a story like King in Black is so
04:03big and intense that it would be incredibly difficult to pull off in live action without an enormous budget.
04:09But in animation, they can go all out with the visuals and really bring that world to life.
04:14Plus, Sony has already proven that they can deliver high-quality animated movies, especially with the Spider-Verse films, which
04:21have been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.
04:25But even though all of this sounds exciting, there's also one big issue that stands out.
04:30One key ingredient seems to be missing from this new Venom movie, and that's the involvement of Phil Lord and
04:36Christopher Miller.
04:37These two are basically the creative minds behind the Spider-Verse films, and they've played a huge role in making
04:43those movies so successful.
04:45So the fact that they're not currently attached to the Venom project feels a bit strange.
04:50When you think about it, Sony is clearly leaning into animation more than ever, largely because of how well the
04:56Spider-Verse movies have performed.
04:58At the same time, they're moving forward with this Venom project without bringing in the same creative team that helped
05:04define their animated success.
05:06That decision could go either way.
05:09On one hand, it allows new filmmakers to bring their own vision to the character.
05:13But on the other hand, it also means the movie might not have the same level of creativity and storytelling
05:19that made Spider-Verse stand out.
05:21This also raises questions about whether the Venom movie will be connected to the Spider-Verse at all.
05:27Initially, it felt like a natural fit, because bringing Venom into that multiverse could open up a bunch of exciting
05:33possibilities.
05:34You could have interactions with characters like Miles Morales, or even set up major crossover events.
05:40But with no clear connection to the Spider-Verse creators, it's starting to look like this movie might be more
05:46of a standalone project.
05:48That's not necessarily a bad thing, because it gives the filmmakers more freedom to tell their own story.
05:53They could even use it as a way to continue the story from The Last Dance, especially if Hardy is
05:59still involved creatively.
06:00But at the same time, connecting it to the Spider-Verse would probably make it more appealing to a wider
06:06audience, because those movies already have a strong fan base.
06:10Another interesting thing is how this movie could serve as a kind of soft reboot or continuation, depending on how
06:17they approach it.
06:17If they keep Hardy's version of Eddie Brock, then it could feel like an extension of the live-action films.
06:24But if they go in a completely different direction, it could be a fresh start for the character in animation.
06:30Either way, they'll need to strike the right balance, because fans will have certain expectations.
06:36At the end of the day, this new Venom movie has a lot of potential, but it also comes with
06:41some challenges.
06:41The character is popular, the concept is strong, and the move to animation opens up a bunch of creative possibilities.
06:49But at the same time, the absence of key Spider-Verse creators and the uncertainty about the story direction could
06:56affect how the movie turns out.
06:58So even though it's exciting to see Venom coming back, there's still a bit of concern about whether this project
07:05will fully deliver.
07:06However, if Sony can bring together the right team and tell a compelling story, this could be a great new
07:12chapter for the character.
07:14But if it ends up missing that creative spark that made their previous animated movies so special, it might not
07:20reach its full potential.
07:22For now, everything is still in development, so there's plenty of time for things to change.
07:28And because Sony has been experimenting a lot with their Marvel-related projects, this could end up being something really
07:35unique.
07:36But until we get more details, it's just a matter of waiting to see how it all comes together, and
07:41whether this new animated Venom movie can truly do justice to one of Marvel's most iconic antiheroes.
07:49And that's that for today's video, thanks for watching and we will see you in the next one, and don't
07:54forget to like, share and subscribe to stay in the loop, and if you want, you can share your thoughts
08:00about this video in the comments.
