00:00This mistake was so good that the director left it in.
00:03Deciding to cast Robin Williams as the most serious character in your movie
00:07might seem like a pretty strange idea on paper,
00:09but it definitely paid off in the 1996 comedy The Birdcage.
00:13The Birdcage is about a gay man, played by Williams,
00:16who pretends to be straight in order to impress the ultra-conservative parents
00:19of his prospective daughter-in-law.
00:21The only problem is that he owns a drag club in San Francisco.
00:24The movie is stuffed with really funny moments,
00:26one of which was actually completely unintentional.
00:29As the meeting between the two families slowly falls apart,
00:31Williams' character is horrified to learn that the big meal that he had planned has gone awry.
00:35He scolds his housekeeper Agidor for messing up as well as his son Val for failing to stay calm,
00:40but in the middle of his tirade, Williams slipped on the floor by mistake,
00:43but got right back up and carried on.
00:45This fall fit in perfectly with the chaos of the scene
00:48and serves to punctuate the tension with a bit of light comedy.
00:51The fact that you can tell the other actors are trying really hard not to corpse
00:53makes the whole thing even better.
