A third "Top Gun" film is officially on the way, with Tom Cruise returning as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.
Paramount's Josh Greenstein announced at CinemaCon that the script is "well underway," reuniting Cruise with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. No director or plot details have been confirmed yet.
The original "Top Gun" (1986) launched Cruise to superstardom. The sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick" (2022), earned over $1.5 billion globally and helped revive theaters after COVID.
Now, fans are already guessing who the enemy will be. The first film's enemy was the Soviet Union. The sequel's enemy was clearly Iran. For "Top Gun 3," one popular idea is China, with dogfights over the Taiwan Strait featuring Chinese Chengdu J-20s.
China would almost certainly ban the film, just as it did with "Maverick." As one commentator put it: "Let the commies cry over it."
Whatever the plot turns out to be, one thing is certain—Maverick is taking to the skies again. ✈️🇺🇸🔥
