00:06Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the videos
00:09that became impossible to escape online. Awkward interviews, bizarre over-shares,
00:15chaotic TV appearances, and moments so funny or surreal that people kept
00:19replaying them for years.
00:2820. Kiki Palmer Didn't Know Who Dick Cheney Was
00:45In September 2019, when Kiki Palmer appeared in Vanity Fair's lie detector test
00:50series, she was shown a photo of former vice president Dick Cheney. Asked whether
00:54her True Jackson VP character would have made a better vice president, Palmer replied,
01:08The brilliance of the clip was that she wasn't trying to be shady or performative,
01:12she was simply being blunt in the most polite way imaginable. That last line
01:16instantly escaped the interview and took on a life of its own online.
01:19It became a meme, a reaction image, and a perfect little phrase for detached, graceful indifference.
01:2919. Tom Holland's Umbrella Performance
01:37There are celebrities willing to look silly for a laugh, and then there are celebrities
01:42willing to commit with the force of a Broadway closer. On Lip Sync Battle in 2017, Tom Holland
01:47faced off against his Spider-Man Homecoming co-star, Zendaya, and delivered one of the
01:51show's most famous performances.
02:01He began with singing in the rain, then pivoted into Rihanna's umbrella, wearing a black wig,
02:06corset, fishnets, and enough confidence to power a small city. What made the moment so funny was that
02:12Holland never played it like a joke. He attached the choreography with full seriousness, and that
02:17commitment is what sent the clip into another stratosphere.
02:2818. Hozier's Instagram Mishap
02:34Few things delight the internet more than watching someone with a carefully cultivated aura get
02:39humbled by social media. In August 2020, Irish singer-songwriter Hozier accidentally posted a
02:45goofy filtered video to his main Instagram story instead of the smaller audience he meant to share
02:49it with. Fans got a much sillier look at him than what they were used to, and the Take Me
02:54To Church
02:54singer quickly followed up by saying he was mortified after pressing the raw button.
02:58No idea what I'm talking about. Please don't look at this. Just move on.
03:03If you do, you never saw that. I'm so mortified. I'm not high. I just pressed the wrong button,
03:12and then my phone, my phone shat the bed, and then I couldn't delete it fast enough.
03:18That embarrassment was half the joke. For a brief moment, the moody, soulful mystique gave way to a
03:24Grammy nominee getting absolutely owned by Instagram's interface.
03:27You die by this Squidward filter. I'm so sorry. Never again. I'm still in bits.
03:36You're all drinking in the chaos on Twitter. God bless. Thanks for understanding, and thanks for
03:44your discretion. Thanks for not posting on Twitter.
03:46Number 17. Robert Pattinson's made-up dead clown story.
03:50You know, I was thinking during the introduction when I was a kid, and that's a long time ago,
03:53but, you know, the kids my age, boys my age, they wanted to be baseball players,
03:56or they wanted to run away and join the circus. This is a very different time. Did you have any
04:01of those dreams as a kid? Some celebrities try to survive repetitive press interviews.
04:05Robert Pattinson, for a time, seemed to treat them like opportunities for performance art.
04:10During a 2011 appearance on the Today Show, while promoting Water for Elephants,
04:13the Twilight star and future Batman was asked whether he had ever wanted to run away and join the circus.
04:20Running away and join the circus? Uh, no. The first time I went to a circus, somebody died.
04:23One of the clowns died.
04:26Alright, I'm not letting that go. How did the clown die?
04:29His little car exploded. The joke car exploded on him.
04:33You're being serious about this? Yeah, seriously.
04:35Instead of giving a normal answer, Pattinson launched into a bizarre anecdote about going
04:39to the circus as a child and witnessing a clown die a violent, fiery death. He told it so calmly
04:45that it almost sounded plausible. Years later, Pattinson admitted the story was completely fabricated,
04:50explaining that long press tours used to push him into a kind of mental fog where he would start
04:54inventing things. So, did that kind of ruin the circus for you?
04:59It was. Like, my parents had to, like, let everybody ran out. It was terrifying.
05:04What a bizarre way to start the interview.
05:07That's the only time I've ever been to the circus.
05:08Number 16, Kristen Bell's Sloth Meltdown.
05:11So, Dax did something really sweet.
05:14He certainly did. Well, one of the many sweet things he's done. So, I turned, uh, 31 this past summer
05:20and
05:22he said, um, I'm gonna get you a present that no one else will ever get in their lifetime.
05:27It's one thing to love animals. It's another thing entirely to suffer a complete emotional
05:31collapse at the thought of meeting one. Kristen Bell's Sloth Meltdown on the Ellen DeGeneres show
05:36in January 2012 became instantly memorable because it was so disproportionate and yet so obviously real.
06:01Bell was recounting how Dax Shepard, then her fiance, surprised her for her 31st birthday with a visit from a
06:07sloth.
06:08As she retold the story, she shared a video of her dissolving into tears, squeals, panic, and total overload.
06:15As if we couldn't be any more endeared to Bell and Shepard than we already are.
06:18Let's bring out the cutest sloth.
06:21No, you didn't.
06:22No, I just wanted to see.
06:23Oh my god, come on!
06:38No! My heart is beating so bad!
06:40I know! I'm so smart!
06:42Number 15, Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon recreate You Spin Me Round.
06:46If I, I'd get you to know your name.
06:53Well, if I, could chase you from it to number, baby.
07:01A good parody exaggerates. A great parody is so absurdly faithful that the accuracy becomes the joke.
07:08That was the genius of Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon's 2019 shot-for-shot recreation of Dead or Alive's You
07:14Spin Me Round music video on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.
07:16You spin me right round, baby, right round, like a record, baby, right round, round, round.
07:24Dressed in wigs, makeup, and aggressively 80s styling, the two recreated the original with loving precision.
07:30The poses, the close-ups, the lighting, all of it.
07:34Instead of mocking the video from a distance, they jumped straight into its weirdness and let the source material do
07:39the work.
07:40I'm round, yo! You spin me right round, baby, right round, like a record, baby, right round, round, round, yo!
07:49Number 14, Justin Bieber was standing on business.
07:52I love my evenings too much. You can take these videos out of context. You can try to make me
07:56seem like a bad guy.
07:57I like my evenings. I love my wife. No, you're a cool guy. You're not a bad guy. You're a
07:59cool guy.
07:59I love my wife. I love my family. I know, we know that. You provoke me and it's sad, bro.
08:03No, we don't provoke you. We just say a happy father thing. But let's leave it at that. Let's leave
08:08it at that.
08:09I love my evenings. Let me enjoy that evening.
08:11Every so often, the internet lashes onto a phrase and suddenly a joke is everywhere before anyone is fully explained
08:17where it came from.
08:18That is roughly what happened when Canadian pop icon Justin Bieber became attached to the phrase standing on business
08:24after a paparazzi clip spread online and was quickly transformed into memes and remixes.
08:30I'm a dad. I'm a husband. You're not getting it. It's not clocking to you. It's not clocking to you
08:37that I'm standing on business, is it?
08:38The joke worked because Bieber looked intensely serious and the phrase itself had a dramatic,
08:43hyper-macho weight that made it endlessly reusable for both big and hilariously minor situations.
08:48The appeal was simple. One stern celebrity clip, one catchy phrase, and suddenly everyone had a new way
08:54to overstate the importance of whatever they were doing.
08:56I'm a real dad, a real husband, a real man.
08:59Number 13. Winona Ryder reacts to David Harbour's speech.
09:03This is unreal. I'm supposed to start talking. I'm sorry. I'm sick.
09:07On behalf of this fearless and talented cast, we would like to thank…
09:12Oh, it's so heavy.
09:13We'd like to thank Netflix, Sean, Matt, Ross, and the amazing casting director, Carmen Cuba.
09:20Sometimes, the funniest person in a clip isn't the one speaking. Sometimes, they're just standing nearby,
09:26silently cycling through what looks like every known human emotion. This is what happened at the 2017 SAG
09:32Awards, when Stranger Things won for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series,
09:36and David Harbour delivered an impassioned acceptance speech.
09:39In light of all that's going on in the world today, it's difficult to celebrate the already celebrated
09:44Stranger Things. But this award from you, who take your craft seriously and earnestly believe,
09:50like me, that great acting can change the world, is a call to arms from our fellow craftsmen and
09:55women to go deeper. Standing beside him, Winona Ryder became the real story. As Harbour grew more
10:01intense, Ryder's face moved through confusion, concern, awe, skepticism, and would look like a full
10:07existential crisis. The speech itself was memorable, but people couldn't stop replaying Ryder's reactions.
10:13The moment goes to show that there's probably a little bit of Starstruck Winona in all of us.
10:17We will get past the lies. We will hunt monsters. And when we are at a loss amidst the hypocrisy
10:26and the casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will, as per Chief Jim Hopper,
10:32punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the meat and the disenfranchised and the marginalized.
10:40Number 12, Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal's Wired interview.
10:44Is Ryan Reynolds missing a tooth? What are you? No, these are all my teeth. What the hell is going
10:49on here?
10:49Ryan Reynolds is missing a lot of things.
10:54Let's get these calf implants out too while we're at it.
10:56Press junkets are usually designed to iron out personality. Every now and then though,
11:00a pair of celebrities decided to rail the format for everyone's benefit. That's what Ryan Reynolds and
11:05Jake Gyllenhaal did in Wired's 2017 autocomplete interview while promoting the mostly forgotten
11:10sci-fi horror flick, Life. The premise was simple. Answer the internet's most searched questions.
11:15Can Jake Gyllenhaal kiss? Dude, I'm not Andrew Garfield. Sorry.
11:23And by the way, is Jake Gyllenhaal Andrew Garfield? The answer to that is no.
11:26How is Jake Gyllenhaal? How is Jake Gyllenhaal's a great one? How is Jake Gyllenhaal pronounced?
11:32There you go, too. We've done it a thousand times.
11:33Sort of.
11:34Instead, the segment became a loose back and forth filled with teasing,
11:38riffing, and the kind of chemistry that makes a routine promo interview feel actually entertaining.
11:42Reynolds brought the sarcasm. Gyllenhaal matched him beat for beat,
11:46and the whole thing felt less like publicity than two famous men amusing themselves.
11:51What is Ryan Reynolds' diet?
11:52Twigs, rocks, sticks, and a tiny bit of green tea.
11:56You're in my head. Get out of my head, Gyllenhaal. What is Ryan Reynolds' motorcycle?
11:59Well, it's a two-wheeled motorcycle that is propelled by a combustion engine.
12:03Ryan Reynolds' motorcycle is a person.
12:05Yeah, his name's Gary. He's, uh, yeah.
12:07Number 11. Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford lose it with Alison Hammond.
12:11Well, there's so much secrecy around this new film. What can you tell me about it?
12:15Obviously, you've told me that it's... You having a drink?
12:18I think it's... I feel like that's where this... That's where this is headed.
12:22There's something uniquely satisfying about watching a standard celebrity interview fall apart in real
12:27time. Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford's 2017 interview with British TV presenter Alison Hammond
12:33during the Blade Runner 2049 press tour became beloved for exactly that reason. Hammond's chaotic
12:38opening line sent both actors into laughter almost immediately. And from there, the whole exchange
12:43became an increasingly hopeless attempt to regain control. I've got these glasses in because these
12:47were from the original Blade Runner. This is what they used. So I thought, you know, attention to
12:52details for fans will probably like that. That's so cool that you did that. Are you a fan of the
12:57originals?
12:58Never seen it.
13:03I appreciate your candy. They never really did. Instead of a polished junket conversation, viewers
13:10got two Oscar nominated leading men cracking up as if they had completely lost the plot. And don't get
13:18it. Nice to meet you both. Nice to meet you. Thank you so much. So nice to meet you.
13:22It's the funniest interview ever. What I did when we start the day? This morning?
13:28This morning. Yeah. Cheers. Cheers. What a morning. You know I don't drink.
13:35Number 10. Seth MacFarlane cracks Tom Cruise up on The Graham Norton Show. How many voices do you do?
13:41Sorry to take over your interview, but I'm just kind of curious. How many can you do?
13:46You know, just enough to avoid being myself.
13:50Tom Cruise laughing so hard that he completely loses composure is not something people get to
13:55see very often. That is a big part of why this Graham Norton Show clip stuck. Sitting beside Seth
14:00MacFarlane, Cruise was sent into fits of laughter as MacFarlane cycled through celebrity and character
14:05impressions, including one especially ridiculous Liam Neeson parody that seemed to break him completely.
14:10I don't have any money.
14:22But what I do have are a very specific set of skills.
14:29Cruise doubled over, teared up, and struggled to pull himself back together. On his own, that's
14:34already funny, but the contrast makes it even better. Cruise is so intensely polished and tightly
14:39controlled that seeing him completely derailed by something this stupid gave the moment an extra
14:44jolt. If you don't let the girl go, I will track you down, I will find you, and I will
14:51kill you.
14:59Number 9, Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart go all in?
15:02My first song is by the Queen Bee.
15:09The one, the only, Beyonce.
15:15Here's a little drunk in love. If a joke is worth doing, Will Ferrell has seemingly always believed is
15:20worth doing with a level of commitment that borders on alarming. That philosophy was on full display
15:26during a Tonight Show lip-sync battle that aired around Super Bowl 49 in February 2015.
15:31Ferrell, Kevin Hart, and Jimmy Fallon turned this segment into the year's most replayed comedy bits,
15:36with Ferrell especially attacking Beyonce's drunken love like he was fighting for his life.
15:47The dancing was ridiculous, the commitment was absolute, and the physicality was so excessive
15:52that the whole thing became more than a simple gag. The bits served as proof that the SNL alum does
15:57not
15:58have to do jokes. He escalates them until they become full-blown spectacles.
16:02You can never, you can never unsee that.
16:06Number 8, Hugh Jackman recognizes an old student.
16:10So, I mean, you're getting an award tonight for contribution to film and stage.
16:14Yeah.
16:14I mean, how do you feel about that?
16:15I feel good, but Rollo, I'm sorry, man. We go way back. I used to teach you at a high
16:20school in PE, and I want to know how your physical education is progressing. It's very important to me.
16:25Nothing cuts through celebrity polish faster than a reminder that someone had a very normal life
16:30before any of this. At the Zurich Film Festival in 2013, Hugh Jackman interrupted a red carpet interview
16:36after realizing that the reporter, Rollo Ross, had once been his student when he taught PE in England.
16:41Jackman instantly shifted into teacher mode, joking with Ross as though they had run into each other
16:46at a class reunion. For a few minutes, Wolverine himself wasn't promoting a project. He was gently
16:51roasting a former student in public, and the whole thing was far funnier and warmer for it.
16:56Of course, I mean, like, we've seen you as Wolverine doing a berserker rage, and in this,
16:59you're very, very angry. I mean, in reality, what makes you angry? I mean, what, what, what?
17:03You know what makes me angry, Rollo? You know, students who don't really listen.
17:08No, it's the kind of student who don't bring their kit. You know, the kind of students who
17:12don't jump in the pool and tell them to jump in. That's what makes me angry, Rollo. In fact,
17:17I'm remembering you more and more. Number seven, Elijah Wood gets pranked by Dominic Monaghan.
17:22Basically, this is an interview with Dominic Monaghan and myself. He interviews me. I could not see
17:28him on the day, therefore I didn't necessarily know it was him, because I was doing the interview
17:32via satellite. I was in New York City while they, the cast, was actually in Berlin.
17:36Long before social media put every odd celebrity clip under a microscope,
17:40there were already moments that had exactly that wild energy. Among the best is the Lord
17:45the Rings DVD extra in which Dominic Monaghan prank calls Elijah Wood while pretending to be a German
17:50interviewer named Hans Jensen. What time is it in Australia? Oh, I'm, I'm not in Australia.
17:56You're in New Zealand? No, I'm in New York. New York. New, New Amsterdam.
18:02That's right. Yeah. Okay. We begin now. Yeah. Yeah. Mr. Wood, it's a pleasure to meet you,
18:09to have met you. Thank you. Woods' confusion gradually turns into amusement,
18:13as the whole thing becomes impossible to take seriously. Monaghan keeps layering nonsense until
18:18the clip becomes a miniature masterpiece of friendly stupidity. By the time the joke fully lands,
18:23it feels less like celebrity content than two friends inventing the dumbest possible way to
18:28entertain themselves. With that said, when will Elijah Wood wear wigs? Uh, no, I do not. Have you worn wigs?
18:35No, I have not. Will you wear wigs? Maybe. When will you wear wigs?
18:44Number six. Keanu Reeves tells the crowd they're breathtaking. Please welcome Keanu Reeves.
19:01How's it going?
19:03Some celebrity clips go viral because they're chaotic. Others spread because they've hit a
19:07strangely perfect sweet spot between funny and genuinely charming. Keanu Reeves' appearance at
19:13Microsoft's Xbox E3 briefing on June 9th, 2019, belongs firmly in the second category. While promoting
19:19Cyberpunk 2077, Reeves walked on stage to a roaring crowd, and one fan shouted,
19:25you're breathtaking. Without missing a beat, Reeves pointed back and replied,
19:29you're breathtaking. You're all breathtaking. It was brief, but it captured exactly the public image
19:37people already had of Reeves. Warm, humble, and unexpectedly game. Sometimes, that's all the
19:43internet. Maybe even the world needs.
19:58Number five. Shia LaBeouf's Just Do It.
20:01Do it! Just do it! Don't let your dreams be dreams.
20:09Yesterday, you said tomorrow. So just do it! Make your dreams come true!
20:15There's motivational speaking, and then there's... whatever Shia LaBeouf created when he screamed
20:19Just Do It! at the world in 2015. Filmed against a green screen as part of an art project,
20:24the clip features LaBeouf barking increasingly intense self-help commands while flailing his arms
20:29and staring into the camera with the energy of a man trying to physically force inspiration through the
20:34screen.
20:35Some people dream of success while you're gonna wake up and work hard at it! Nothing is impossible!
20:42You should get to the point where anyone else would quit, and you're not gonna stop there!
20:48No! What are you waiting for? Do it! Just do it!
20:57Don't let your dreams be dreams is already a lot as a sentence. Delivered like this, it becomes accidental
21:03comedy gold. People remixed it, parodied it, and used it sincerely or ironically depending on the
21:09moment. It was self-help gone spectacle, and LaBeouf's sheer over-commitment is what made it funny.
21:14If you're tired of starting over, stop giving up.
21:23Number 4. Dakota Johnson quietly ends Ellen's career.
21:27It's good to see you. Happy belated birthday. When was your birthday?
21:30It was October 4th.
21:32October 4th. You turned 30.
21:35I did.
21:35And, um, how was the party? I wasn't invited.
21:38Dakota Johnson's 2019 appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show became famous because of one cool
21:43surgical correction. When Ellen joked that Johnson had not invited her to her birthday party,
21:48Johnson replied.
21:49Actually, no, that's not the truth, Ellen. You were invited.
21:52That line was enough to shift the room's entire energy. Johnson stayed calm,
21:57Ellen visibly scrambled, and viewers immediately latched onto the discomfort.
22:00Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of about not inviting you,
22:06but I didn't even know you wanted to be invited.
22:08Well, who doesn't want to be invited to a party?
22:10Well, I didn't even know you liked me.
22:13Of course I like you. You knew I liked you.
22:16You've been on the show many times, and don't I show...like?
22:20The clip became even bigger once people connected it to the now infamous image of Ellen,
22:25seated beside George W. Bush at a football game that same weekend.
22:29What made the moment so funny was how little Johnson had to do.
22:32She simply corrected the record and let the awkwardness do the rest.
22:35But I did invite you and you didn't come, so...
22:38This time you invited me? Yeah.
22:40Are you sure? Yeah.
22:41How do you know? I don't think so.
22:43Ask everybody.
22:47Ask Jonathan, your producer.
22:49Okay. Who said you were?
22:50I was invited? Why didn't I go?
22:52I don't know.
22:55Was it...was it...
22:56You're out of town.
22:57Oh yeah, I had that thing.
22:59Um...
23:00Number three.
23:00Tom Cruise jumps on Oprah's couch.
23:03We've never seen you behave this way before.
23:05I know.
23:05Have you ever felt this way, you girls?
23:17You're gone.
23:18You are gone.
23:20You are gone.
23:20Every so often, a celebrity clip becomes so outsized that it stops feeling like a mere moment
23:25and starts feeling like a myth.
23:27Tom Cruise's May 23rd, 2005 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show is one of those.
23:32While enthusiastically talking about Katie Holmes, Cruise leaped onto Oprah's couch,
23:36pumped his fists, grabbed Oprah by the hands, and later brought Holmes on stage.
23:47The sincerity was dialed up so high that it tipped into absurdity.
23:51It looked like a polished movie star operating in a completely different emotional frequency
23:55than the one daytime television was built to handle.
23:58That's your intensity turned the appearance into perhaps the defining celebrity moment
24:01of the 2000s.
24:02I'm a hugger, you know what I mean?
24:04Yeah, I know you are!
24:04I know what I mean, I give it.
24:05Yes!
24:06Yes!
24:06So that's, that's what it's like with Steven and I, you know?
24:09Yeah, yeah.
24:10And when you've been hugged by Tom, you've been hugged.
24:13Yeah, I got super excited, I couldn't help it.
24:16I like this.
24:18Number two, Gordon Ramsay creates the idiot sandwich.
24:21Back when you were first on our show, your first ever appearance, we did a sketch.
24:26Myself, you, and Julie Chen, and there was a very, very popular meme came out of that sketch.
24:33Let's remind everybody of what we're talking about.
24:36Some jokes are so instantly visual, so perfectly stupid, and so cleanly phrased,
24:41that they barely need any context at all.
24:43Gordon Ramsay's idiot sandwich moment is one of those jokes.
24:46During a 2015 Late Late Show parody sketch, Ramsay pressed two slices of bread against
24:51Julie Chen Moonves' face, and demanded to know what she was.
24:55Chen's answer instantly entered internet history.
24:58It's reached their boiling point.
25:00What are you?
25:01An idiot sandwich.
25:02Idiot sandwich what?
25:03An idiot sandwich, Chef Ramsay.
25:05The moment subsequently went so viral, that it actually became divorced from its original context,
25:10and unaware internet spectators assumed the clip was actually from one of
25:13Bransy's shows and ran with it.
25:14The celebrity chef has since shared that people come up to him with slices of bread,
