00:03Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we'll be counting down our picks from the most intimidating, creepy, or cool examples of
00:09the silver screen mummy.
00:18Number 10, Pharaoh Saphirima, Dawn of the Mummy.
00:25Being born in Egypt, Frank Agrama had something of a connection to the creative material present within 1981's Dawn of
00:31the Mummy.
00:32Make no mistake, however, Agrama's main focus as a filmmaker was genre-slash-exploitation picks, and Dawn of the Mummy
00:38therefore revels in the red stuff.
00:41Pharaoh Saphirima couldn't be more removed from the austere universal tradition, and instead commands undead hordes to terrorize a group
00:47of models that disturb his tomb during a photoshoot.
00:57It's a ridiculous premise for a horror movie, to be sure, but at least Saphirima's violent attacks make good on
01:02that excellent Dawn of the Mummy 1 sheet art.
01:11Number 9, Amenhotep, The Mummy's Revenge.
01:15Diehard fans of the Universal Monsters would do well in venturing over to Spain in order to discover the cinematic
01:21work of Paul Nashi.
01:22The Mummy's Revenge was just one of Nashi's bloody creature features from his fertile 1970's heyday.
01:27Finally, I shall have my eternal liberty. Soon, my beloved Amarna will be by my side.
01:35A great example of how dedicated Nashi was to earning his reputation as Spain's Lon Chaney.
01:41Amenhotep's rotten appearance feels like a mixture between Hammer and Universal's monster design, as The Mummy's Revenge crawls along with
01:48plenty of atmosphere and costumed ambiance.
01:51Paul Nashi always committed to his roles, both villainous and heroic, with The Mummy's Revenge serving as an interesting entry
01:57into the honestly underserved Mummy movie genre.
02:08Number 8, Queen Kara, The Awakening.
02:11Good things come to those who wait until the end of this 1980 adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1903 novel, The
02:17Jewel of Seven Stars.
02:18They even believed, no doubt, because she told them so, that she had the ability to reincarnate herself.
02:28That's when The Awakening, which admittedly is more of a possession film than a traditional Mummy movie, goes off the
02:33rails in the best possible way.
02:35Charlton Heston chews the scenery, as The Awakening borrows more than a little bit from The Omen's climatic moral conundrum.
02:42Great God, Chief of the Holy Dwelling, may you grant that Kara comes out from the underworld.
02:51Does Heston's character allow for the spirit of Queen Kara to possess his daughter Margaret?
02:56Or does he risk destroying his family in order to stop the spirit of this Egyptian queen from taking over
03:00the world?
03:00You're here.
03:03Go on.
03:06I can't.
03:07You must.
03:08Number 7, Queen Terra, Blood from The Mummy's Tomb.
03:11He who is buried here shall henceforth have no name, shall cease to exist in the minds of man, as
03:21she has ceased to exist in life.
03:23We're going to back-to-back Bram for this next entry, as the Hammer film, Blood from The Mummy's Tomb,
03:28seeks out the same source material as our previous movie, The Awakening.
03:32This time, it's the glamorous and lovely Valerie Leon who delivers double duty as the wicked Queen Terra, as well
03:38as the potential vessel for Hell on Earth, Margaret.
03:42Hammer's reputation for selling skin, as well as shock, was certainly exemplified by the promotional material and appearances by Leon
03:49in service to Blood from The Mummy's Tomb.
03:50It wound up working well as a star vehicle for an actress, whose prior resume primarily consisted of sex comedies
03:57and carry-on films.
03:58Well, I was thrilled when I was cast into a dual starring role in Blood from The Mummy's Tomb, playing
04:05an evil queen called Queen Terra.
04:07A mummy possession movie with a swinging 70s atmosphere? Yes please!
04:11She is back amongst the living, to claim all that is hers.
04:17Number 6, Popoca, The Aztec Mummy, The Aztec Mummy Trilogy.
04:21This one goes out to the old schoolers, those that can remember rabbit ears on the TV, and weird imported
04:26horror movies airing on late night cable channels.
04:29The Aztec Mummy Trilogy refers to three quickly made Mexican mummy movies that possess that fuzzy, UHF creepiness best watched
04:36in the dark, with some pizza and adult beverages.
04:43The Aztec Mummy, The Curse of the Aztec Mummy, and The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy are all certifiably campy,
04:50but not without their charm.
04:51And I have made that dream come true.
04:54There you have the greatest creation of man's intelligence.
04:57A human robot, Doctor.
05:01While Popoca itself retains a cool, dried up appearance.
05:04It's a retro mummy that's perfect for monster kids in the mood for something vintage.
05:08Number 5, The Mummy, Waxwork.
05:12Now we're talking...
05:14Those who desecrate the tomb of Raul will be condemned to a painful death at the hands of...
05:30The Mummy.
05:32An underrated mummy from an equally under-discussed horror flick from the late 1980s.
05:37Waxwork is a great example of horror comedy done right, where the levity nicely balances out some legitimate scares and
05:43excellent monster makeup.
05:44The Mummy here combines a face only a zombie could love, with the traditional bandages most fans associate with this
05:50classic creature.
05:57The monster's aim is to, in the film's words, condemn a painful death to those who desecrate the tomb of
06:03Raul.
06:03And he certainly delivers in this regard.
06:05Shambling and attacking with menace that matches the great special effects from Bob Keen and image animation.
06:12Number 4, Lot 249, Tales from the Dark Side, The Movie.
06:16This anthology film did a great job at bringing to the silver screen television's classic Tales from the Dark Side
06:22series.
06:22The first tale, titled Lot 249, stars a young Julianne Moore as a graduate student who pays the price for
06:28cheating a young man named Edward Bellingham.
06:30The mummy that winds up being summoned by Bellingham is wonderfully actualized by the KMBFX group.
06:42A macabre and rotting creature that easily possesses the required menace and malevolence.
06:48Lot 249 also features, in typical Tales from the Dark Side fashion, an equally morbid ending, as Bellingham's regards return
06:55from the tomb one final time.
07:03Number 3, The Mummy, The Monster Squad.
07:06Shane Black and Fred Decker's ode to everything monstrous remains one of the 1980's finest love letters to the classic
07:12universal monsters.
07:13Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein's monster, The Gillman, and yes, The Mummy, all make appearances here, and all are great.
07:27What's awesome about The Monster Squad is how each creature gets their time to shine, whether it be The Wolfman's
07:32tortured self-loathing or Count Dracula's villainous evil.
07:35The Mummy, predictably, doesn't have much to say, but it doesn't really need to, right?
07:40Instead, it just delivers what we want from a traditional, bandaged Egyptian pharaoh.
07:45Shamble around, moan, and threaten us at molasses speed.
07:49What's not to love?
07:50See you later, bandaid breath.
07:52Number 2, Karras, The Mummy.
07:55The character of Karras is one that appears within both the universal and Hammer worlds of horror.
07:59Death was not for Karras, nor was life.
08:03For his sins, he was sentenced to remain for all time on guard near the body of his princess.
08:08He was buried alive.
08:10The former can be found in such Mummy sequels as The Mummy's Ghost,
08:14whereas the Karras from Hammer's 1959 remake of The Mummy was portrayed by none other than Sir Christopher Lee.
08:26The actor's towering, unstoppable Mummy feels just as threatening as Lon Chaney Jr.'s Karras.
08:32True physical threats that aren't just mere window dressing.
08:35Instead, Karras' evil possesses some real weight,
08:38with each attack building upon the elements of suspense and dread
08:42found within most of the classic Mummy movies from this venerable franchise.
08:52Number 1, Imhotep, The Mummy.
08:55Come to the altar of Anubis, the guide of the dead.
08:59It should be said that Boris Karloff actually doesn't spend all that much time within the iconic makeup
09:03during his appearance in the original Mummy from 1932.
09:07The actor is disguised in human form under the moniker of Ardoth Bey for the lion's share of the film.
09:12That said, what we do see not only becomes the stuff of horror legend,
09:16but went on to influence countless performances in Karloff's wake.
09:28The slow, methodical movements, unaccompanied by music and Karloff's mesmerizing stare,
09:34all work hard in making Hizmhotep a king amongst mummies.
09:38The remake from 1999 was certainly fun for its time, but in this case, the OG remains unconquerable.
