00:00I have a lot of questions about the movie, but I have to get this out.
00:03I saw a fan casting for you for Rapunzel and, like, also, can we put you in there, too, for
00:09Flynn?
00:09I keep on telling him that he's a really good Flynn Rider.
00:12She is Rapunzel.
00:14Yeah, but you have the swan.
00:16Flynn Rider was, like, my, like, crush growing up.
00:18So you're saying I'm your crush?
00:20Yes.
00:22So, yes.
00:23Yes, I think he'd make a great Flynn Rider.
00:25I'm only in if she's in.
00:27Come on, you're so silly.
00:28Come here a sec.
00:29I'm already running late.
00:31Please?
00:37How crazy is that people can do a Mason Thames double feature?
00:40That's what I've been saying!
00:42Also, if, if, um, Blackbone, How to Train Your Dragon, and Regretting You all open up at number one,
00:48Mason will be the first actor to have had three movies open up number one since Jim Carrey in the
00:5390s.
00:53What?
00:54Isn't that insane?
00:55That's crazy!
00:56At 18.
00:5818!
01:00God!
01:00Mason's so cool.
01:01That's...
01:02Very talented.
01:03He's very humble.
01:03So I have to, like, walk around him.
01:05Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:07What does that have to do with anything?
01:08Get a hold of yourself.
01:11I love that, by the way.
01:12That's...
01:13You guys are so cute.
01:13Okay, um, you know, I've been asking people about, you know, I love Miller's walls.
01:17I'm a huge movie fan.
01:18I love his room.
01:20What would be on your walls if you could have those exact walls?
01:24What movie posters are you putting up there?
01:26She has Romeo and Juliet.
01:28She's taking some down, but she's had a lot of cool stuff.
01:30I have, I very much...
01:32The Leo one?
01:32Yeah.
01:33Yeah, of course.
01:34Good.
01:35And then I used to have Romeo and Juliet up on...
01:38Romeo and Juliet up on my wall.
01:40There you go.
01:40I drink espresso today, okay?
01:41I'm not used to it.
01:42I know, she's jittery right now.
01:43I've just started drinking espresso on Hunger Games and it's like, you know, getting me.
01:48But, um...
01:49Start young.
01:50That's good.
01:51But, um, I used to have Nirvana.
01:54I had a Demon Slayer poster on my wall for a minute.
01:57I had a Pokemon poster.
01:59Yeah.
01:59How did I not know about that?
02:00That's so cool.
02:01I don't know, because it was when I was like 15.
02:02That's so sick.
02:03I used to have like a wall covered in baby animals and like leaves.
02:07That's dope.
02:08Um, yeah.
02:09I have a lot of posters on my wall.
02:10Right now I have System of Down, Green Day, and Romeo and Juliet.
02:13Yeah, I have...
02:14And you.
02:16I have...
02:17What do I have?
02:17I have a Dak Prescott jersey on my wall.
02:21I have...
02:22Oh, yeah.
02:22Baby photos of me on my wall because my parents won't let me take him down.
02:26Word.
02:26So I just cover him up with a big ol' flag.
02:28You're not...
02:28You're staying.
02:30But if I were to have something, I'd have Spider-Man 2.
02:33I'd have Pacific Rim.
02:35Why don't you?
02:36I'd have the notebook.
02:37I don't know, I haven't really...
02:38Do it.
02:38I should do it.
02:39Let's do it.
02:40I'm gonna do it.
02:42When you were in high school or now?
02:44Let's do high school.
02:45Okay, yeah.
02:46Oh, it would have just been all Pearl Harbor posters.
02:50Oh, really?
02:51Yeah.
02:51I mean, there's only so much I can do.
02:54I'm a millennial girl.
02:55It was a movie with Josh Hartnett and Ben Affleck.
02:57Of course, of course.
02:58You know, because it was that and then everything Harrison Ford has ever been in.
03:01Give me...
03:02What's the first one you think of?
03:04Star Wars, of course.
03:05Indiana Jones because I love archaeology and anthropology.
03:08Yeah, it would have been that.
03:09What's an obscure one you think of with Harrison Ford?
03:11Oh my gosh.
03:12Well, I love What Lies Beneath.
03:14It's one of the few horror movies that I can watch.
03:16I just re-watched that recently.
03:16It's excellent.
03:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:18So sexy.
03:19What about you?
03:19I'm going Stand By Me.
03:21Of course.
03:21I'm doing Fight Club.
03:24Yep.
03:24Ian John Malkovich.
03:26Yep.
03:28What else?
03:29I worked at a video store in 1999, which is known as the greatest movie year ever.
03:35I'm trying to think of what else came out.
03:36Magnolia came out that year.
03:38American Beauty, American Pie.
03:39Next question.
03:42You're like, I'm going to just keep going.
03:43I can live.
03:43I can keep going.
03:44I'm 90s all the way.
03:45Right, right, right.
03:4690s movies, Forrest Gump, Brave Horror, Shawshank Redemption, Unforgiven.
03:54I mean, all the 90s classics.
03:56I love that.
03:57Yeah.
03:58I was very lucky that Paramount gave me access to their archive.
04:01And so I made a list of all my favorite Paramount movies and they allowed me to put them all
04:05in the movie.
04:06So I was like, thank you.
04:07Jack Nicholson's on the wall and Stephen King.
04:09I got Stephen King in Pet Sematary.
04:11This is my little, like, whatever.
04:12My little hate.
04:14Yeah.
04:15So that's kind of, would be your wall.
04:18Oh yeah.
04:18It's my, that you'd be, this is my wall.
04:20It's still my wall.
04:22My workspace, you know.
04:23That's a fun idea though, to have it more of a mural.
04:25It's a mural.
04:26It's really your own.
04:27It was just when I was a kid writing or thinking about movies, you want to surround yourself
04:30with the things that inspire you.
04:31So it's like, I'm mostly surrounded by books and music and movies and things like that.
04:36And that's, that's pretty much all I've ever cared about, you know, or those things.
04:39I would never buy a sports car or a mansion, but I'll buy a billion books, you know.
04:43Right, right.
04:44It's always interesting to hear about, um, the involvement of the author when their
04:49vision is being, you know, transported.
04:52Right.
04:52What was Colleen Hoover's involvement here?
04:54You know, very minimal.
04:56It's like, so luckily the producer that brought it to me is a guy named Brunson Green who did
05:01the help.
05:01And he's like my favorite producer I've ever worked with.
05:04Like he is awesome.
05:05And so the two producers that he worked with on this movie, Flavia and Anna knew Colleen.
05:09And so they are in the book world and Anna, uh, wrote all those after books.
05:14So she's known Colleen for many years through that.
05:17So it's like, I was able to keep a nice sort of remove from all that.
05:21And they did that.
05:22And again, I wanted nothing but for Colleen to love the movie, which she did, which was
05:26the biggest, like, you know, but I just, she had had such a tumultuous time on that
05:32last one.
05:32I just wanted her to have a good experience and I didn't want to, uh, inundate or bother
05:37her or vie for her affection.
05:39Uh, so I really thought about that a lot was giving her space and just going to make
05:43the movie.
05:44I didn't really need anything from her.
05:45I had the book, you know?
05:47So, um, yeah.
05:48And, uh, wonderful.
05:50I'm sure she's great, but I just wanted to kind of keep a distance from, from all that
05:53stuff.
05:54How important was the book to you guys?
05:56I had it.
05:56Hang on everybody.
05:57We embraced the script just as much as we did the book.
06:00Like it was, uh, that was the most important thing we wanted to just to, you know, do justice
06:06to the book and for the fans who love it so much because we are fans as well.
06:09So everybody gave it 110% to, to, you know, the book and, and yeah.
06:15Had the book on set every day.
06:16She did.
06:17She had her little notes and she'd flip through it and we'd go through some scenes.
06:20She would talk to Josh, the director and be like, Hey, there's this thing in the book
06:22that I'd like to add.
06:23And he's like, of course, let's do it.
06:24And it was, uh, it was great.
06:26And I'd sit there and just be like, yeah, me too.
06:27I think that's a great idea.
06:29Yeah.
06:30I love that scene.
06:30Yeah.
06:31I love that.
06:32Well, what's one of the things you added McKenna?
06:33Do you remember?
06:34Gosh.
06:35Um, I'd have to go back and look at all my notes.
06:37Yeah.
06:38There were, there were a little things.
06:40There was this one scene where she, well, nevermind.
06:43I did like pull a sucker out of your mouth because that was in the book and there was
06:46like a whole thing, but I don't know.
06:47There was like a couple, there was a couple little things in there that I can't remember
06:51right now, but there's a few.
06:54And what about your relationship with the book?
06:57Did you crack it open, decide to just move it aside?
07:00No, I didn't want to like let it cloud what was on the script.
07:05And I've done a few, um, movies that are based on books and it's, it's, I find it's
07:11easier just to, you know, sometimes I take that back.
07:15There, there's been some books that I've read or were based on, um, a true stories and
07:19I've read those.
07:21Um, but this just felt like I was doing what I was doing and I wanted to listen to Josh
07:25how he wanted it.
07:27I thought we would be one big happy family forever, but the universe had other plans.
07:32Well, I was wondering how cathartic it was to wreck a car and egg a painting.
07:37Extremely.
07:38Oh yeah.
07:38Because I don't like, I don't know.
07:40There are people that are wired like this and they're probably more emotionally healthy
07:43than I am, but I don't express anger in that way.
07:47Like physically it's more of like a biting meanness and then like quiet solitude, which
07:52I think is more chilling and waspy in general.
07:54And so it felt great.
07:57And it's something I should continue doing.
07:58Like I think rage rooms exist for a reason.
08:00Right.
08:01Mason and McKenna went to a rage room.
08:03They did.
08:04Yeah.
08:04Just like you get like all these.
08:06You wear goggles.
08:07Yeah.
08:08Swale on like an old TV.
08:09Sounds nice.
08:10Yeah.
08:10Yeah.
08:11I'm not like an angry person.
08:12So I feel like I just be like, and they'd be like,
08:14I was worried about that, but I got so pulled into it that I hurt myself doing it.
08:19Like I, that scream was improvised.
08:21Like it was just sort of like, it really just started to come out.
08:24And I was like, okay, like, you know, you looked a little scared.
08:27Everyone was like, interesting.
08:29Didn't see that coming from her.
08:30That's what you want out of that scene.
08:31I feel like.
08:32Yeah.
08:32Well, you guys get to play teenagers.
08:35Yeah.
08:35Can you talk about, I heard also from McKenna.
08:37We had a previous interview with her where she said you kind of had a lot of different,
08:40there were like some early wig situations.
08:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:43I was like, who's like teenage son is on set?
08:46And I'm like, that's Dave Franco.
08:47I'm like, oh my God.
08:48Like it was like a jump scare.
08:50Can you guys talk about like the process into getting into what we arrived to?
08:55Yeah.
08:55Mine was short side, but now it's your turn.
08:58Uh, there was a wig situation that was supposed to be kind of based on how I looked in like
09:04my early twenties where I had this like,
09:06I feel like Josh found a photo of you that he just got stuck on.
09:09It was my first headshot and it's this really long swoopy thing going on and the wig, everyone had very
09:16good intentions.
09:17Um, but as like the process was happening, I was like, oh, this isn't working.
09:21And, uh, it was one of the first days of filming.
09:24And I remember having to do this long walk through the set, past all the crew, past all the cast
09:29to show our director.
09:31What do you think of this ridiculous wig?
09:34And he literally laughed in my face.
09:37And then I had to do the walk back to have them rework the wig, did the walk again with
09:42an even worse wig.
09:44Uh, we didn't use the wig in the movie.
09:47I think I love that you had that little walk again.
09:50Twice.
09:51Did you have any fun process that arrived to what your character looks like as a teen?
09:57Yeah, there was, there was, uh, I got to wear, I think some, I might've wear puka shells in one
10:02of the scenes and some tank tops from the nineties, which was fun.
10:08And just, yeah, just to sort of young him up a little bit. It was fun.
10:11You remember that age, everything felt so complicated.
10:16I'm very sorry.
10:17Your husband and sister were in a car accident.
10:20Don't you want to know why they were together?
10:22I want to ask you guys a little spoiler question.
10:23I think if I was in the position of the characters, I would read the letters.
10:28I knew you were going to say that.
10:29Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was curious what your thoughts were on that.
10:31Here's what's so satisfying about this, Dave, is that I agree with you and we are going to get a
10:36disproportionate amount of people saying that because they are journalists.
10:39Oh, that's interesting.
10:40And they need to know. I would never destroy a primary source document ever, ever in a million years.
10:45Here's what I'm going to say, because I don't want to give away what these letters are or whatever, but
10:48like, what kind of salacious details do you need to know?
10:53It's not about that. It's too final.
10:53We know the broad spectrum of what happened and it's something bad that you don't want to know about. So
10:58you really want to know the details that make you feel worse?
11:00But it made a, anyway, I don't want to spoil it. There are people who should make that decision that
11:05are not the two of us. That's all I'll say.
11:08But those people should not be, we got to move past this.
11:12Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, my thought was like, kind of humanizes maybe a little bit for me. It would be
11:17what I would like, potentially.
11:19You know those details are sexy.
11:20You'd have to, I'd have to wait, I'd wait like years.
11:22You know those are sexy details. I don't want those human details about my partner with someone else.
11:27Was there ever a scene that would have provided more context for the viewer about what his other life was
11:34like? And would you want one?
11:36There were some scenes, I think, I haven't actually seen a movie, the final cut, but there were some scenes,
11:41there were several other scenes I heard that got cut.
11:44So I don't know, just, you know, sometimes that happens, things get chopped on the floor and the movie is,
11:50you know, bigger than just all the scenes.
11:52But together you got to sort of craft the pacing and, and that's, you know, that's not my department.
11:58I would have loved to see Chris and Clara's father-daughter relationship. What do you think that that was?
12:04So we had some more of that and I heard, I had heard that there was more of that, that
12:09got cut out.
12:10I mean, we, we shot several scenes that were sort of flashback scenes and other stuff that, that I just
12:15don't think made the final cut.
12:19I just don't want to forget them. You deserve to be happy.
12:23Speaking of the notebook, they get a kissing in the rain scene. Do y'all, did you guys wish you
12:27had a kissing in the rain scene?
12:28That would have been good.
12:31Well, fun fact, that scene where Miller and Clara, where Clara runs and jumps on Miller, it was supposed to
12:36be raining.
12:38And you were like wet, obviously not in there, but she walks in from the rain.
12:42Yeah.
12:42And she's all like soaked.
12:44Yeah.
12:44I guess I just didn't do that at the end of the day, but yeah.
12:47I thought you guys shot that and...
12:48No, no, no, no. It just ended up, they did that for Morgan.
12:52Morgan.
12:52Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:53The dramatic rain.
12:54So I guess they got the cool kiss in the rain, whatever.
12:58We just had to make out in a public movie.
12:59An AMC.
13:02Coolest movie theater.
13:03We love you, AMC.
13:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:04We do love you, AMC.
13:05I wanted to talk about The Promposal.
13:08It's really cute.
13:09It's very sweet.
13:10Can you guys talk about filming it and what your thoughts are on The Promposal?
13:14It was really sweet.
13:16It was really sweet.
13:16It was really fun.
13:17That was a really sweet night.
13:18I know.
13:18You in your little dapper suit.
13:19I had a lot of fun.
13:20In your little red dress.
13:21It was great.
13:22It was so funny.
13:23Everybody was fitted up.
13:24Yeah, everybody was fitted up.
13:25And Dave had his baby.
13:25And Dave had the baby.
13:26Dave had the baby.
13:28Yeah.
13:28No, that was a really sweet night.
13:30That was one of my favorite scenes in the film, to be honest.
13:34It was just a lot of fun to film.
13:36And I think we all just had a good time in the movie.
13:38It's just so sweet.
13:39And there was a version.
13:41I don't know if I ever showed you it.
13:43I saw it.
13:44I saw it.
13:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:45There was a version of The Promposal where it's like The Promposal video.
13:48And there was a version of it where they asked us if we had any fun videos from our personal
13:54life.
13:54And so we sent him over to Josh and he cut it all into The Promposal video.
13:58And it was really sweet.
14:00It was really good.
14:00And it made me cry.
14:02It's awesome.
14:02I was with you when we both did.
14:04I know.
14:04It was really sweet.
14:05But then it didn't end up making the final cut.
14:07But it's just like there's so many like special little parts and bits and pieces of that scene
14:12that were very lovely.
14:13No regrets, right?
14:16Everywhere, everything.
14:19I'm a huge horror fan, so it's so fun to talk to y'all.
14:22But for something completely different.
14:23I know.
14:24Top three horrors this year.
14:26Oh, God.
14:28Megan together and?
14:30Weapons.
14:31Okay.
14:32Good top three.
14:32Good top three.
14:33I've seen all of those.
14:34I feel very proud.
14:35I would never ask you guys like, can we do like a, I feel like a double feature with
14:40this and regretting you would be like.
14:41I'm going to do one better.
14:43I've already, I've thought this through.
14:45I just did a movie called The Shitheads and I play a dirt bag with a disgusting facial
14:51hair, neck tattoo, tattoo here with a bird saying who farted.
14:54You can get the gist of who this guy is.
14:56I've already superimposed him on my face on the regretting you poster.
15:01It's a good movie.
15:02It's a good movie.
15:03It's a chilling movie.
15:03The psychopath coming after this beautiful family.
15:06We're going to do a little crossover thing.
15:08Yeah.
15:08That really changed.
15:09Yeah.
15:09That's yeah.
15:10I'll show you after the interview.
15:11Amazing.
15:11And I love that the look on my face is sort of like, I'm intrigued.
15:14Yeah.
15:14You're still intrigued.
15:15Yeah.
15:15Yeah.
15:16They're still romantic.
15:17Yeah.
15:17Yeah.
15:18Yeah.
15:18in the middle
15:18just make
15:20I'm dead
