Instagram, TikTok and Facebook: Which European countries want to ban social media for minors?

After Australia banned social media for under-16s in December, European nations are now debating their own restrictions as Brussels mulls a "European solution".

00:06In 19 of the 27 EU countries, more than 90% of young people aged 16 to 29 said they

00:15media networks, according to Eurostat. The highest shares were found in Cyprus,
00:21Czechia, Denmark and Finland, while the lowest were registered in Italy, Germany and Luxembourg.
00:27But countries are cracking down on the use of social media for the youngest in society.
00:32After Australia banned social media for under-16s in December,
00:37European nations are now debating their own restrictions.
00:41For example, MPs in France recently voted to block access for under-15s,
00:46with President Emmanuel Macron hoping it will be enforced by September.
00:50In addition, at least 10 more member states are at different stages of banning social media for
00:55children, while Germany's ruling party also has passed a motion to block access for those under-14s.
01:02By contrast, Estonia is the only EU country that openly opposes such a move.
01:07At the EU level, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced that a European
01:12age verification app will soon be available for citizens to use.
01:16The app, which will be compatible with both mobile devices and computers,
01:21will require users to upload their passport or ID card to confirm their age anonymously when accessing online platforms.
