00:01I think it's one of the worst houses we'll probably ever encounter in our
00:05entire career. This house excites the crap out of me. I'm Kamohai Kalama, right?
00:11Yeah! And I'm Tristan Kalama. I put on extra deodorant for this.
00:17Oh my god. We buy and renovate homes in the most challenging place in the
00:22country, Hawaii. The shipping is more than the actual material cost. We want to
00:28restore homes for our local families. The real estate here is crazy expensive.
00:35So to make this work, we have to take on some of the most rundown homes on the
00:38island. Can you hear us? No! Disgusting. How do we do it? Our giant family. I have 87
00:47first cousins. Yo, what's up cuz? More than anything, we want our children to be good
00:53human beings. Exactly. Can't have little ass walking around. Little ass walking around.
01:08Look, I'm gonna make this. Okay, I'm gonna take a top toe. Oh my gosh! Did you let me win?
01:20No, I didn't even know. Oh, daddy's home. Daddy! What you doing? Good. Yeah. Hi, babe. Hi. You brought me
01:30flowers?
01:31Why? I did bring you flowers. No, but why? Why? That's so random. I know your daughter. That's so random.
01:38Yeah, but why? I agree with you. Am I not allowed to bring my beautiful wife flowers? You should be
01:45eating flowers for no reason.
01:47Okay. I just bought a couple lots in Hilo. What now? I bought two lots. It is the beginning of
01:57a new endeavor.
01:58They're all tax auctions. I mean, people that just haven't paid their property taxes. So I got a super good
02:05deal.
02:05Sight unseen. They're up in Volcano. Vacant land. Bought one for $37,000 and the other one for $12,000.
02:13Can I tell you 12? 12K. So what do we do now? Make houses on it.
02:19Well, obviously. You're right, y'all. You're right. We have to build on them. We've never done that before.
02:26I know we haven't, but these two lots are going to be a trial run for potentially a whole new
02:33arm of our business that just builds affordable housing.
02:38Totally brand new houses on like half acres of land. That's bananas.
02:43Like there's no way that we'd ever be able to fulfill that mission here on Oahu at those prices.
02:50I know. No, it's impossible. But my real question is, if you bought two lots, why did you only come
02:55home with one bouquet?
02:56You should have had two bouquets.
02:58There's only one. One. We've got to start with one. We've got to figure out which one it is.
03:03So that's why you get one bouquet.
03:09Aloha mai kakou. Today we'll be making our way to Hilo on the beautiful island of Hawaii.
03:13As we make our approach to the magnificent Moku Okeawe, you will see a stunning view of Mauna Kea, the
03:19world's tallest mountain from sea level.
03:28Hilo is taking a step back into old Hawaii. Not as developed as anywhere else. There's still a lot of
03:37jungle landscape. You have Kilauea, which is an active volcano.
03:42So there's a bunch of volcanic landscapes.
03:45Did you put the directions on or you're winging it?
03:47I'm winging it.
03:48I mean, out of all of the islands, the Big Island in general, but more specifically, the Hilo side of
03:54the Big Island is one of the last places that are actually affordable for local families to purchase a single
04:00family home.
04:01Look at that helicopter.
04:02Which is still Wild Wild West out here, right? You'll see like a random helicopter in someone's yard.
04:09We've never done brand new construction.
04:12Never.
04:13Oahu and Hilo are night and day. There is a ton of vacant land, but limited development. Because of that,
04:22you don't have all of the creature comforts.
04:25No public water, no public sewer. You need to use septic tanks. Night and day difference in the real estate
04:31market.
04:32Tell me you know exactly where you're stopping because there's no...
04:36No.
04:36We bought raw land.
04:37I know. I know.
04:39There's no house.
04:40I am going off of coordinates and the limited reception that I have.
04:45Love it.
04:47We're using my good buddy and childhood friend, Fuzzy, to be our contractor on this project.
04:54He works in Hilo, does a ton of projects up there, and is super experienced with new builds.
05:00There he is, sitting on his...
05:03And there he is.
05:04The one and only.
05:05We're going to walk the properties and to figure out which one we're going to build on first.
05:15What's up, brother?
05:17How are you guys doing?
05:18He got us lost a little bit.
05:21Good to see you guys.
05:22Good to see you guys.
05:22What's up, brother?
05:23What's up, my knife?
05:24How are you?
05:25I know.
05:25I see your knife.
05:26You guys ready to go check the trail?
05:28This is it.
05:28This is it?
05:29Yep, this is it.
05:30I mean, it just looks like a jungle, because it is.
05:33This is the lot, right?
05:36The lot is unique.
05:38The front lot is 10,000 square foot, which is not ours.
05:41It's supposed to be right behind.
05:42So it's behind.
05:42So it's a flag.
05:43It's a 143 foot driveway into our 20,000 square foot.
05:49Oh, so we got to hike in.
05:50Yes.
05:50Got it.
05:51I brought this.
05:52Oh, God.
06:00And look for the pig tracks.
06:02You can see them right there in the mud.
06:03Somebody stepped on the doo-doo.
06:05See right there?
06:06Oh, yeah.
06:09We got the fuzzy bear on our side.
06:13So straight.
06:14So this is the back of the front property right here.
06:17Got it.
06:18Dude, this is it.
06:19We are basically like this, all the way back.
06:23Yeah, on the whole lot.
06:24Wow, look at the size of these ferns.
06:26Yeah.
06:26I mean, obviously, we're in jungle right now.
06:28So the next steps is to get it surveyed.
06:31Yup.
06:31And then cleared a lot?
06:33Yes.
06:33Okay.
06:34So we have no sewer or water up here.
06:36We have electric.
06:37We have electric.
06:38So we have Hawaiian electric at the front of the property.
06:41That'll help us bring our power here.
06:43Yup.
06:43And then what's unique about the big island, we use our resources because it rains a lot.
06:48Yup.
06:49We use metal roof.
06:50Yup.
06:50Into the, the rain goes onto the roof, goes into our gutters, into a water.
06:55Into the catchment.
06:56Catchment.
06:56And then it gets pumped out.
06:58Mhm.
06:58And then that's how you get the water to shower, washing dishes.
07:01Tell me, for the clearing of the lot, how much is that going to cost us?
07:05How much is that?
07:18The other one is a little closer to town.
07:20That one is clear already.
07:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:22I know.
07:22I haven't seen it.
07:23This is unique, more private.
07:25A lot of people like privacy.
07:27Right.
07:27But it comes with challenges.
07:28Right, right, right.
07:29Right.
07:29And now it's going to rain on us because we're in Hilo.
07:32Yup.
07:33But you want to take us to the other property?
07:35Yeah, let's go check them out.
07:36After you guys.
07:38Oh my gosh.
07:39Oh my gosh.
07:39That's far away.
07:40What the hell?
07:50Okay, so this is the other one.
07:52This is the one we got at the auction, right?
07:54Yeah.
07:55So, sight unseen, but.
07:56I mean, it looks way more developed.
07:59Yeah.
07:59Yeah, like look at all the houses around.
08:01I mean, it's so much closer to town too, yeah?
08:04Yes.
08:04So what would this lot go for?
08:07Well, they sell about $70,000 or $80,000.
08:09So we got a crazy deal on this one, yeah?
08:12$12,000?
08:13Yeah, super good deal.
08:14And then the cost of the build would be about the same.
08:16What is ARV in this area for like a $32,000?
08:18So a $32,000 would be selling for like $395,000, somewhere around there.
08:22Okay.
08:22In this area too, it's similar, right?
08:24We would have to do a septic tank.
08:26Yeah.
08:27Yeah.
08:27Water catchment.
08:28No city water.
08:29But there's electricity.
08:30Then we got power and internet.
08:32I mean, it feels like a no-brainer to me.
08:34I feel like we're all in agreement.
08:36Okay.
08:36All right.
08:36This is the one we're going to do first.
08:39So what is the next step then?
08:40Well, let me go get on the phone and go get the survey guy and we see what the property
08:45boundaries are.
08:46And go from there.
08:47And then go from there.
08:48Let's go.
08:55Now that we have the lot decided, we can get to the fun part, which is something we've never done
09:00before.
09:00Picking out a house package, which is the most efficient way to pass on savings to the future owner.
09:05After you.
09:07Although it's not required on the big island, the local permitting department has pre-approved housing plans for new construction.
09:14This makes it super easy to pick a layout and start building, but we're still going to handle the design.
09:18So we can put our Kalama stamp on this project and have our house stand out even more.
09:23We're looking for at least a three bedroom, two bath.
09:27Mm-hmm.
09:28I think around 1,600 total square feet.
09:31I think it was under 2,000 for sure.
09:34And then we want an enclosed garage for sure.
09:37Yeah.
09:38And we really want to try and stay under 200,000 total.
09:42Okay.
09:42So how long do you think these would take for city approval?
09:46Typically with the pre-approved process, you're looking like no longer than a month.
09:51That's crazy.
09:53That's fast.
09:56So the VWACA starts at $138,000.
09:59This has three bedrooms, two baths, and a carport.
10:02And then we've got the Keola for about $150,000.
10:05Okay.
10:06Similar floor plan with three beds and two baths, but an enclosed garage and an upgraded primary for $150,000.
10:14Okay.
10:14And the Kaolana jumps up to $200,000.
10:17This one comes with a lanai built-in.
10:20And all of the bedrooms are bigger, but it's going to make it harder to sell at an affordable price.
10:26I think the Keola is the one we need to go with.
10:29It still checks all the boxes, but it's going to help keep us in budget, keep things more affordable.
10:35Because I think the end goal for us is to be able to pass savings on.
10:38So in order for us to do that, I think we need to go with the Keola.
10:41So it's a quick turnaround time.
10:43I love that.
10:44Yeah.
10:44Yeah, yeah.
10:45Four weeks.
10:46I love that.
10:46I'm going to hold you to it.
10:47Yes, of course.
10:49Okay, cool.
10:49You'll be even more surprised.
10:51Yeah.
10:51Cool.
10:52Let's get it started.
10:56Now that we have plans, there is no time to waste to start building.
11:00The next step is getting a survey of the property to figure out the best location for house placement.
11:06Hey, what's up?
11:07Come on.
11:08What's up?
11:09We're all surveyed up.
11:10Hi.
11:11How we looking?
11:11How we looking?
11:12Good.
11:12We're just about to get started walking the lot to mark the boundaries.
11:15Yeah.
11:16We'll start from the road and work the way back.
11:18After that, the next thing is to set the plans for the permits.
11:21Okay, cool.
11:24I'm actually going to take this.
11:25Yeah.
11:27What's up, buddy?
11:30But what?
11:31Do you think like further back on the lot or right in the middle?
11:34Yeah, I mean, it would be good to be in the back, right?
11:37Guys!
11:38What?
11:38Can I come over here?
11:39What?
11:40Did you see this?
11:41See what?
11:42Trees?
11:42Dude, what is this?
11:45It's like everything collapsed back here.
11:47But look, you can see all the way down through.
11:51Holy crap.
11:51What is it?
11:52Wait, is it a lava tube?
11:53Wait, wait, wait.
11:54Is this a hollow underneath us right now?
11:56I'm going to check it out.
11:58It's camouflaged.
12:00Like you can't even tell.
12:08Oh, this is sick.
12:10Holy shit.
12:10You guys.
12:11Oh, my gosh.
12:19Oh, my gosh.
12:22It is 100% a lava tube.
12:25Holy shit.
12:26And it goes all the way back here?
12:29I mean, what do we even do, you guys?
12:31This is the middle of the lot right here.
12:33It's underneath the lot.
12:35Like, there's no way we can build on this.
12:37One of the crazy things about living on the Hilo side of the Big Island,
12:40is that there's still an active volcano that's erupting.
12:46Like right now.
12:46All of the Hawaiian islands were built through volcanoes.
12:51Yeah.
12:52And Big Island still has a few active volcanoes.
12:57It goes all the way over there.
13:00Look at how big it is over there.
13:02This is insane.
13:05It does go.
13:07It's kind of spooky, right?
13:08It keeps going.
13:09It keeps going over there.
13:10Yeah, it goes around.
13:11But it can't be good to build on, right?
13:14I don't know.
13:14But this is going to probably cost way more than the other one.
13:18This is a lava tube.
13:20Yeah.
13:20These underground caves were formed by the molten lava,
13:23leaving behind an empty cave once the lava flow stopped and cooled.
13:27They're all over the Big Island.
13:29Yeah.
13:30And this is, you know, from up from Kilauea.
13:33It's flowing under the earth.
13:34These lava tubes were probably sitting here for years.
13:38This is not.
13:40And it feels dangerous.
13:42We have to get out of here, you guys.
13:45Let's go.
13:46The thing is, I've seen many, many lava tubes.
13:48But this is like raw and like undiscovered, which is the crazy part.
13:54I don't even, I'm speechless.
13:56I've never experienced anything like that my whole life.
13:59I'm terrified and amazed all at the same time.
14:03We've got to figure out what we're going to do.
14:05Oh my gosh.
14:06I mean, it looks like it goes under the entire lot.
14:10That's what happens when you buy stuff sight unseen.
14:13Bruh.
14:14I've never seen anything like that in my whole life.
14:17Like that was insane, you guys.
14:20All of this is hollow.
14:22In order to do this property, you would have to bust down the ceiling.
14:26And fill it all back in.
14:28Yeah, but now how much is that?
14:31It could be $50,000 or more.
14:33Like this one would cost way more at this point.
14:36Yes.
14:36Than clearing that up.
14:37100%.
14:37We don't know, you know.
14:39We need to explore more.
14:40We need to see exactly what it would take.
14:42You don't even know what's down there.
14:43Exactly.
14:44I feel like we have to move back to that one.
14:47So we're all in agreement.
14:48We're just going to go with.
14:49We don't have a choice.
14:50Plan B.
14:51Plan B.
14:52This is not even a choice.
14:53It doesn't mean we're done here.
14:54We just need to explore the lava tubes further to see if we can build on it later.
15:02So the good thing is, is we can use the same pre-approved plans on the first property.
15:07So we'll just have to clear the lot first.
15:09And after going over all the numbers, it looks like we'll be paying right around $330,000.
15:15Holding and selling costs will be just under $20,000.
15:21We only bought the lot for $37,000.
15:24And based on recent comps, it seems like we can sell a brand new build in this location for around
15:31$450,000.
15:33Which means we would make a good profit and be able to continue to build more for local families.
15:46Let's go.
15:48It's called Big Brada.
15:50Ah, that thing is nuts.
15:54After serving this lot, we did not find any lava tubes underneath like the last one.
16:00Thank gosh.
16:00So there's really nothing standing in our way from building on this lot.
16:05It's just going to take some really big machines and we'll get it cleared.
16:10And just like that, there's your path into your property.
16:14There's your driveway, guys.
16:15There's your driveway.
16:16So lot two is not off the table, but we only have Fuzzy's crew for a certain amount of time.
16:22So we have to jump into lot one super fast and get it done.
16:26He is in there like swimwear.
16:28It's always been our goal since the very beginning to be able to show locals what's possible.
16:35Well, that's the only goal.
16:36Being able to be here is really a win-win.
16:41It's just all the good feelings.
16:43I think we need to get out of the way now.
16:47Yep.
16:47Holy .
16:50He's coming all the way back.
16:52It's crazy.
16:58It's been a few weeks and we have the permits for the Keola House now.
17:02And we're going to start laying the foundation.
17:03And since our lot is super close to Kilauea, Kamahai and I are headed up to the volcano to check
17:10it out.
17:10We love to draw inspiration for design from the surrounding environments of wherever the house is.
17:16And so it only makes sense to have the volcano be the inspiration for this house.
17:22Look how beautiful it is.
17:24When's the last time we were up here?
17:26I think it's been about a year and a half.
17:28Way longer than that.
17:30Yeah.
17:30I mean, we missed the eruption by two days.
17:33Two days.
17:34I know.
17:35Literally life is being born up here.
17:38Dude.
17:41Oh my God.
17:42Look at this.
17:45That's where it was erupting two days ago.
17:47I know.
17:48So crazy, babe.
17:49Bruh.
17:50Yeah.
17:52We're in a neighborhood selling houses under $500,000.
17:58We're definitely going to be upping the game for anything that neighborhood has ever seen.
18:06For sure.
18:07I mean, first things first, nothing in this beautiful landscape is flat and dull.
18:14Yeah.
18:14It all has texture and movement.
18:16I know for sure I want to use red because lava.
18:21Gotta pay homage to the lava.
18:23It's like a brownish red.
18:24It's very dark, understated, moody.
18:28But you get the point across that it's a statement and that can be in the hall bath.
18:32I love it.
18:33I also think we should put some white tile in because the smoke is very white at the moment.
18:38That's the primary right there.
18:39We can do a white tile that has streaks of black to mimic the mountain peaks though.
18:45Like red, black, white.
18:47There's our color palette.
18:49And I think we should bring it all together in the kitchen.
18:52White backsplash tile with a two-tone cab.
18:55Maybe black and like a red wood and then finish it off with a textured white with black vein countertop.
19:01Super, super cool.
19:03I also think that we should do like that full lava stone.
19:08The puka lava?
19:09Yeah, like a puka lava, but they have them in squares.
19:11We can use as an accent on the front of the house as well as on the fireplace surround.
19:17We never get to design fireplaces in our houses because on Oahu, it just doesn't get that cold.
19:23But up here in Volcano, it does.
19:25So I think that we need to make it a standout feature.
19:28I feel like it levels it up.
19:30I want to try and stay away from anything that anyone's ever seen up here.
19:35Oh, we're going to do something no unseen up here for shizzle.
19:39For shizzle.
19:40So pretty though, yeah?
19:42So pretty.
19:43And the fact that through the destruction, it's just forming new life.
19:48Crazy.
19:56Now that we've nailed down the design, things are moving super fast at the house.
20:00Framing's going up, siding is added, and we're on our way from turning this jungle into a brand new house.
20:07Once the drywall has gone up and the interior has been painted,
20:10it's time for us to go back and make sure everything's squared away
20:14before we install tile and flooring, which has been shipped over from Oahu.
20:24Look at fuzzy.
20:25Cleaning.
20:26Cleanest job site I've ever seen.
20:28What's up, gang?
20:30Welcome back.
20:32It's a really nice day today, y'all.
20:33Yeah.
20:34I know.
20:34It's so nice.
20:35Welcome back, guys.
20:36I know.
20:37So we got the drywall done.
20:39Look at it.
20:40It looks so good.
20:40Look at how good it looks.
20:42And the painting done.
20:43We have a house.
20:44We have a house.
20:45A real house.
20:47You can see it all laid out now.
20:49I love it when it's like this.
20:51I do.
20:51I want one here first.
20:54This feels huge.
20:56Yep.
20:56So the barn door going here.
20:58Yep.
20:58This looks good.
21:00Nice big closet.
21:02Big.
21:02It's a bedroom, you know.
21:04Yeah, bro.
21:06A good-sized bathroom.
21:08Yep.
21:08Looks good.
21:09Feels good.
21:10And then, you know, bedroom.
21:11Two bedrooms in here.
21:13These bedrooms feel big.
21:14Pretty good-sized, you know.
21:15Yeah, they're good-sized bedrooms, too, huh?
21:18They feel massive.
21:19I mean, I love how this house package was affordable, and it looks great.
21:24There's a lot of people that build up here, right?
21:27But this one is going to be a little step above.
21:29It's going to be unique because it's got Kalama's stamp on it.
21:32There you go.
21:32I think it's good.
21:33One issue.
21:36Floors were supposed to be here.
21:37I know we was chatting about it, but we could have had guys already working.
21:41Wait, the flooring's not here?
21:43Flooring's not here.
21:44What?
21:44It was supposed to be here already.
21:45No.
21:46Oh my gosh.
21:47That's a bummer.
21:48The shipping company.
21:49They're supposed to call me, but nobody called.
21:51I know.
21:52Ah, dude.
21:53It's going to push us behind because then the tile was supposed to also be here.
21:56You know what I mean?
21:57It's not going to also be delayed.
22:00Good morning.
22:01Hi.
22:01My name is Tristan.
22:03I'm inquiring about a delivery.
22:05FB 327-2543.
22:12So we don't have it yet.
22:14We probably won't get this container until Monday.
22:16This sucks, Matt.
22:17Now we're going to be sitting for a couple days already.
22:19We can't do anything with zero materials.
22:28So we don't have it yet.
22:30We probably won't get this container until Monday.
22:32That's five days from now.
22:34See, I was told it was already in Hilo, so it's not.
22:37No, we don't have this container yet.
22:40Okay.
22:40I'm assuming you need it like-
22:42Yeah, I need it right away.
22:44Okay, can I give you actually a phone number that you can call when you get it and then my
22:48guy will come grab them.
22:49Sounds good.
22:50Awesome.
22:51Thank you so much.
22:51Appreciate it.
22:52You're welcome.
22:53Okay, bye.
22:53Bye.
22:54I mean, these are the risks of doing projects off-island.
22:57I feel bad because-
22:59They're waiting on us now, you know what I mean?
23:01Which is a bummer, but hopefully Monday gets here.
23:06Well, let's both just tag team them on Monday.
23:08You call, I call.
23:08You call, I call.
23:09I'm going to have my guys ready.
23:11We can slam them out in three or four days.
23:13Just to the finish line.
23:14Let's go.
23:15Jamming, jamming.
23:24While we're waiting for our flooring and tile to arrive, we're working on the exterior
23:28of the house to try and stay on track.
23:33We got our water catchment installed.
23:39And the front accent wall going in.
23:52Thanks for coming out.
23:53Oh, mahalo.
23:55Today I'm meeting with Brandy.
23:56She's an incredible artist that creates Hawaiian-inspired prints and murals showcased all over the islands.
24:02And now she'll be able to beautify our water catchment.
24:07Ta-da!
24:08Yay!
24:08I'm brand new!
24:11Obviously, on Oahu, we don't deal with water catchment, right?
24:14But it's super common out here.
24:16Yes.
24:16So there's no city water or city sewer up here in Volcanoes.
24:20So the water catchment collects rainwater and provides the water for the entire house that the family will use for
24:27all its needs.
24:28My thing was, like, the kitchen and the living room is right here.
24:31So you're just staring at them.
24:33Okay.
24:34So I was like, well, what if we at least made it pretty to look at?
24:38And that's where you come in.
24:39Okay.
24:43Adding a mural to the water catchment doesn't necessarily add value to the house at all.
24:49But Volcano and Hilo, it's all known for its vibrant art scene.
24:54So I think it's just a really unique way for the house to stand out in this market.
24:59I'm kind of thinking, like, something like this all around.
25:03Something like that.
25:03I love that it's flowy.
25:05It's going to be so good.
25:06Okay, good.
25:10Now that our tile and flooring materials have arrived, and while Brandy works on beautifying the water catchment, inside we're
25:16adding our own touches to the bathroom.
25:18We're using a large format tile that really gives a lava theme and adds to the overall volcanic aesthetic.
25:24With the house on lot one moving along and almost at the finish line, Tris and I are headed back
25:30to the second lot to meet with Fuzzy and a structural engineer to see what our options are for building
25:38on this lot.
25:39I've been thinking about this lava tube since we found it the last time.
25:45So I want to go down there and explore.
25:49Are you sure?
25:50No, I'm not sure.
25:51I don't know if I want to go, but I will, reluctantly.
26:08Holy crap, it opens up a lot over here, babe.
26:12Oh my gosh.
26:12See how much it opens up over here?
26:14This is terrifying.
26:16It's just, when you're down here, you just feel an energy.
26:23I mean, this thing just goes back forever.
26:27Are you just going to keep walking?
26:29I'm not, I'm at my stopping point.
26:32You're just going to keep going?
26:33I'm just going to see if it, if I can see how far it goes back.
26:36Oh my gosh.
26:40Wait.
26:42What?
26:43What?
26:44What?
26:45Don't do that.
26:46Oh my gosh, babe.
26:48What?
26:49You got to get over here.
26:50No.
26:50What?
26:51Just tell me.
26:52Holy crap.
26:53It's, there's bones back here.
26:57Not.
26:58Babe, come.
26:59Come on.
26:59I don't, I really don't want to.
27:02Fuzzy!
27:03Fuzzy!
27:04Can you yell for Fuzzy?
27:05Fuzzy!
27:07Yo, what's going on, guys?
27:09He said he just found bones.
27:11I gotta get out of here.
27:12Are you freaking serious?
27:13No, but I gotta get out of here.
27:14I'm serious, dude.
27:15Yeah, you can go.
27:16I feel nauseous.
27:17Like bones.
27:18This is wild.
27:19That's a firm, I'm out.
27:21Can you go wait for the engineer?
27:24Dude, I don't know if they're, they're human bones, but it looks, it 100% looks like it,
27:31bro.
27:32Holy.
27:32It's like they were laid there.
27:34Crap.
27:35In this little cove, you know what I mean?
27:38Is that a skull?
27:48I think those are human remains.
27:50Yeah, let's go.
27:51Yeah, we gotta get out of here.
27:55So you're calling the cops?
27:57Yeah, we gotta call the cops.
27:59We just found what appears to be human remains.
28:04So we are stopping everything and doing, I mean, the only thing that I would know to do,
28:11which is call the police.
28:15How you doing, brother?
28:18So what was it?
28:19Bones?
28:20Yeah.
28:20Yeah.
28:21We're in the lava tube right there.
28:24It goes down.
28:25We just kind of was filming and then we came across the...
28:29It looks old.
28:34Yeah.
28:39Okay.
28:39Jesus.
28:44What do you guys do?
28:46It's ancient.
28:47They normally don't disturb them.
28:49Yeah, they just leave them, man.
28:50Yeah, they just keep them, yeah.
28:51So we have an archeologist.
28:53Yeah.
28:53They'll come out?
28:55Like my partner said, they don't want to really disturb anything.
28:57Right.
28:57So they'll just send them some pictures.
28:59Oh, okay.
29:00And then they'll kind of go from there.
29:02But normally once he has come out, they'll bring like the evidence specialists and stuff
29:06like that.
29:06Oh, yeah.
29:07That makes sense.
29:08Do you guys get this a lot?
29:09It happens often.
29:10You know, recently, a little bit more.
29:13Really?
29:13Oh, no way.
29:14All the new constructions.
29:15Oh.
29:17In this area.
29:20Yeah, this is a first for me.
29:24First for us.
29:26Yeah.
29:27We were talking to the police officers and apparently people find bones in these lava tubes quite
29:33often.
29:34So they took the pictures.
29:35They sent them off to their archeologists.
29:39And I mean, now we're just kind of waiting.
29:41Okay.
29:42What a day.
29:43So crazy.
29:45Never a dull day in real estate.
29:52The police said an archeologist took a look at the bones.
29:55And hopefully we're going to have some clear answers soon.
29:58So it's back to lot one we go.
30:03All of our materials have finally come in.
30:06So we're kicking it into high gear to get this house done.
30:12Flooring, bathroom tile, cabinets, countertops.
30:16We are jamming this thing out.
30:23Fuzzy.
30:26Yo.
30:26Hey.
30:27What's up?
30:28It looks really good outside.
30:29I know, but look inside.
30:30It's all messed up.
30:31Oh, this is normal.
30:32Where's Cabo High?
30:33He runs at a store.
30:34Okay.
30:35Yeah.
30:35We'll be here later.
30:36Yeah.
30:37Look at this.
30:38I know, right?
30:39We get cabinets.
30:40Despite the challenges we've had getting materials here, this house is moving super fast.
30:45So all that's left is getting the last finishes in, like backsplash, our fixtures, and the water catchment mural, which
30:52I really feel is going to be the icing on the cake to make our house stand out against every
30:57other house out there.
30:57So, I know you need lights.
31:00They're all supposed to come in by the end of next week, though.
31:02But we're good, dude.
31:03It's looking really good.
31:04We're so freaking close.
31:06Like, I'm excited.
31:07I'm stoked.
31:08Yeah.
31:12We're one week away from our Hilo Projects open house, but since we've been working so hard, we've been missing
31:18time with our kids.
31:19So, even though we're still swamped with work, Kamahai and I have decided to do a much-needed family night.
31:25Who wants popcorn?
31:27Me!
31:28Everybody's like me!
31:30Oh, you know what we're going to watch, you guys?
31:32Heck yeah.
31:33Let's watch Gremlins.
31:35What about Gremlins?
31:35Let's watch Gremlins.
31:36I only watched Gremlins.
31:38Since when?
31:39I forgot.
31:40We watched it, but I forgot.
31:42Oh, my gosh, babe.
31:44Brandy's calling me.
31:45Hey, Brandy.
31:47How's it, Tristan?
31:48I was almost done with the mural, but I got a little bit of a problem over here.
31:52It's raining real bad, like water everywhere.
31:55It's washing all the paint off.
31:57I'm going to send you a video real quick.
32:06Oh, my gosh.
32:09Ugh, I need more popcorn.
32:11Oh.
32:12So, I'm going to let you go in fur.
32:16All right.
32:16Yeah.
32:17I'm excited to see what you did inside.
32:20Ready?
32:20Yeah.
32:23Oh, this will definitely make you stand out.
32:33After the rain washed away half of the mural, Brandy was gracious enough to come back and paint it for
32:39a second time.
32:40Inside, we're continuing to put our own spin on this package house.
32:44We've added a ventless fireplace and a television nook in the living room, and we wrapped it with the same
32:50puka lava tile that was at the front of the house.
32:58Look at it, babe.
33:00I mean...
33:01Is that the most beautiful water catchment you've ever seen in your life?
33:05Talk about beautiful and a little extra.
33:09It's so cute.
33:10She did such a good job.
33:12It is.
33:12It's amazing.
33:12We're finally done with the house, and today we get to show it to Jade, Fuzzy's go-to real estate
33:18agent.
33:19This is a big day for us.
33:20Her feedback will solidify whether or not we can continue to build affordable houses for local families here.
33:28So, I mean, fingers crossed, she likes it.
33:30Fingers crossed?
33:31Fingers crossed.
33:33Triple, quadruple fingers crossed.
33:37Super creative.
33:40Little art space.
33:51So, how do you feel, babe?
33:53Um, I feel good.
33:54I think it's really, really cute.
33:56I do love it.
33:58If we can stick to our budgets and still make a home feel custom and over the top.
34:04That's what it's all about.
34:04That's what it's about.
34:05First house in Hilo.
34:07I know.
34:07Don't leave me hanging.
34:08Let's go.
34:09All that's left is to meet with Jade.
34:12She has sold a ton of houses that Fuzzy's done up here.
34:16I really hope she likes this place.
34:18We got the lovely volcano weather today.
34:22How's that?
34:22Hi.
34:23How are you?
34:23Nice to meet you.
34:25Mwah.
34:25Finally.
34:26Yes.
34:28So, what do you think?
34:30What do you think?
34:31I love it.
34:31It's very warm feeling.
34:33I love the contrast with the stone and the wood.
34:36It really makes it stand out.
34:38The curb appeal.
34:39Yes.
34:39The curb appeal is important, right?
34:40Curb appeal.
34:42This was just jungle.
34:44I mean, it's always the goal for us.
34:47We know how important catching the buyer right when they pull up to the house.
34:52Well, if they're pulling up to something like this, I'm excited to see what you did inside.
34:58Yeah.
34:58Yeah.
34:59I'm excited to be working together.
35:01Same here.
35:01Like, I know we got straight into the house, but like, obviously I follow you on social.
35:05I teach you.
35:05I've known about you.
35:08For a long time.
35:09But it's nice to be working with you, you know?
35:10Yeah.
35:11Love that.
35:11Yeah.
35:12Okay, good.
35:16Check out the back.
35:17I mean, you saw, it's a 20,000 square foot lot, so it's nice and big.
35:22Look how big it is.
35:24It's huge.
35:24This is so much land.
35:26It's huge.
35:26It's a blank canvas, so people just can do whatever they want.
35:31And look at our water catchment.
35:33I love it.
35:34It's so cute.
35:34It is very cute.
35:36We had a local muralist come out.
35:39It's absolutely gorgeous.
35:41We set up a little fire pit, a little sitting area, but it's raining, so let's just get inside.
35:46But I just like the possibilities that people have.
35:49Endless.
35:50Endless.
35:50And you can even build a whole other house back there.
35:52Oh, another house back there.
35:53Exactly.
35:54I'm going to let you go in first.
35:56Go first.
35:56All right.
35:59I'm excited to see this.
36:01Ready?
36:02Yeah.
36:05Oh, wow.
36:09I love the nice openness.
36:11Light, bright.
36:12What about the fireplace?
36:14The full pucca lava that's on the outside is the same full pucca lava that's in here.
36:18I was like, gotta carry it up to the ceiling.
36:20Yep.
36:21I was trying to bring the consistency from whatever you see outside.
36:25Inside.
36:25I love it.
36:26Especially up in Volcano, the elevation is above 3,000 up here, so it can get really, really cold.
36:32Which is crazy.
36:33Yeah.
36:34Yeah, so having a fireplace definitely helps with the humidity, too.
36:38Oh.
36:38Because of the elevation, there's a lot of humidity.
36:40And this thing is real.
36:41It's off heat.
36:42Yeah.
36:43It's functional.
36:43It's a functional fireplace.
36:46You saw my jacket.
36:46I'm by over here, so I took it off.
36:48But yeah, let's go into, like, this side.
36:55I love the two-tone.
36:56You like it?
36:57I do.
36:57Yeah, go in, touch it.
36:59Yes.
36:59And then it combines with the black handles, with the black cabinets.
37:03Yeah.
37:03So it really does flow together.
37:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:06All of the decisions were very Volcano-inspired, because, A, that's where we are.
37:11But, like, you know, this was just jungle.
37:14Like, he was macheting through this before we bulldozed and, like, we cleared the land.
37:19What, like, three months ago?
37:21Yeah.
37:21And then I know you've sold a ton of houses that Fuzzy has done before.
37:26I couldn't keep up with materials, because he was moving so fast.
37:28I was like, holy crap, okay, okay.
37:30But, like, they're, you know, the blue rocks, so, like, the darker tones.
37:34And then, obviously, you're right by Volcano.
37:36Lava's going crazy right now.
37:38Yes, it is.
37:38So you'll see, like, I kind of tried to pull the reddish and the brown in with the floor.
37:43So everything's very Volcano-inspired.
37:46Yeah.
37:46And people are going to love that.
37:48All right, let's go to the primary ensuite, I feel like, where it's all about.
37:52Let's go check it out.
37:56Oh, wow.
37:58Wow.
38:02I like how it has the little end to it.
38:04Yeah, yeah.
38:06Oh, and then you have the elevated ceilings in here as well.
38:09Yeah.
38:09It's just I feel like, you know, you've seen this bedroom before.
38:13But not with this.
38:14But not with this.
38:17So you did keep kind of like the lava feel in here.
38:21I love it.
38:21I did.
38:22But dual vanity.
38:24Yeah.
38:24I love the vessel.
38:25The vessel sinks.
38:27You still have kind of the lava rocks coming in here.
38:30Lava rock feel.
38:31Everywhere.
38:31And it matches.
38:32It still flows.
38:33Yeah.
38:34Let's go to the other side.
38:36So guest bathroom.
38:37Guest bathroom.
38:38Guest bathroom.
38:40So I like how you have the black cabinets in there.
38:43To match the black down here.
38:45Yeah.
38:45And then you have the oak stand one here.
38:48To match here.
38:49Okay.
38:50But then everything else is pretty consistent.
38:52Yes.
38:52Like the countertops.
38:53I see where you're going.
38:54Yeah.
38:54Yeah.
38:55And then you have the last two bedrooms here.
38:57Oh, okay.
38:59Isn't it cute?
39:00Yes.
39:00Very.
39:01Yeah.
39:01And then the last bedroom over here.
39:03This is fully a queen.
39:04So I mean, a standard good bedroom.
39:07We did good?
39:08You did really good.
39:09Okay.
39:09Yes.
39:10Well, now we have to figure out what we're going to sell it for.
39:14Right?
39:15Figured that was cool.
39:19Okay.
39:19So you've seen the whole house.
39:22And I mean, we're really like relying on you as the expert.
39:28You know what I mean?
39:28I do.
39:29And this is the Keola model, right?
39:31Yes.
39:31It is.
39:32So a lot of them are building like this.
39:34And what it is that stands out is the custom that you put into it.
39:39The upgrades, the extra, the feel.
39:41Taking the outside stone and wood and bringing it inside.
39:45You know, buyers look at those things.
39:47Yeah.
39:47If you're just going to walk in and it has the same as the other house down the street.
39:52Right.
39:52You're just competing with the same.
39:54So the market here right now, because we do have a lot of developers that are building.
39:59So we do have quite a bit of inventory.
40:02But the way that this house that you guys did it definitely stands out.
40:07Another home down the street but wasn't to this caliber.
40:11Uh huh.
40:12Sold for $4.50.
40:13Okay.
40:14Okay.
40:14So we're definitely over that.
40:17Yeah.
40:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
40:18But I mean, I'm going to range it somewhere like high fives to maybe like $5.25-ish.
40:24Okay.
40:24Like somewhere in that kind of a range.
40:26That's amazing pricing.
40:30You know what I mean?
40:31But why we wanted to start doing this up here with Fuzzy is because of the affordability aspect.
40:40Right?
40:40Yeah.
40:40And so being able to build beautiful custom homes.
40:45Yeah.
40:45But still keep them affordable for locals.
40:48Is really important.
40:48Yeah.
40:49Is what is super important to us.
40:51Yeah.
40:51You know what I mean?
40:52I agree.
40:53And you know like the market's going to take the house where it's supposed to be.
40:56And so I feel like it should have a four in front of it.
40:59$4.99.99.
41:00Yeah.
41:00$4.99.99.
41:02Well, I'm excited.
41:03Yeah.
41:04Thank you guys.
41:05It was an honor meeting you guys too.
41:07I'm excited to see media too.
41:09And like photos and stuff, you know?
41:11I honestly feel like this is just the first one of many.
41:15There you go.
41:15I love it.
41:16We're going to become very, very close.
41:19Trust me.
41:19Good.
41:19I love it.
41:28But before we sell it, it's time for my dad to bless it.
41:32Welcome to our first new build, dad.
41:35This island is the youngest of them all that continues to grow.
41:38But it provides a great deal of opportunity for families to move here.
41:41And build a financial strength for their families for generations to come.
41:44And build a life with him himself.
41:45Yeah.
41:48Yeah.
41:50Oh my God.
41:52Ah, oh.
41:58Yeah.
42:01Oh, knew you lot.
42:04OK.
42:05Oh, yeah.
42:08It's a bit of a humble heart.
42:12So to wrap it all up, our first ever Hilo home is in escrow with a family who is moving
42:18from Oahu to the Big Island at $450,000.
42:22We have a total spend of $386,000, which means we make a profit of $64,000.
42:30And as for the lava tube lot, the archaeologists came back on the bones and it was discovered that they
42:38were ancient.
42:38I spoke to cultural experts and the most respectful thing to do in our culture is to protect in place,
42:46to not disturb the bones and preserve the history of the land.
42:51We're just going to keep the lot.
42:54That will ensure that nobody ever builds on it and the bones will be there protected in place in perpetuity.
