00:00Hi, I'm Detective Evolo with the Redondo Beach Police Department, and this is a fledgling
00:04great horned owl. Animal Services brought this fledgling owl today, which was left at the base
00:10of a palm tree. So we wanted to just take some time to educate the public and let them know
00:14that
00:14while this may seem scary, this is a very important process for young howlets to take.
00:20At this age where they have blight feathers or they're fledgling feathers, they're starting to
00:25branch out and learn how to fly and move around. Unfortunately, in Redondo Beach, we have a lot
00:30of palm trees and that's not a great home for owls because there's no branches for them to start
00:35learning how to fly. So you'll find that at this age, these owls will actually fall to the ground
00:39and that's where they'll do all their learning. But don't worry, their parents are still taking
00:43care of them and you'll see mom and dad still coming down to heat them. So don't be alarmed if
00:48you see them, just leave them where they are. And unless it's absolutely necessary, like maybe a dog
00:53or an animal is going to get to them or they can get into traffic, don't worry about calling
00:56anybody. You can just leave them to eat. But don't hesitate to call our animal to show
01:00either because they'll be more than happy to come pick them up.
