A police inspector charged with attempting to murder a traffic policeman by ramming him with a car has been ordered by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to undergo a mental examination at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Tanjung Rambutan.

The accused, Muhammad Kamal Raj Shanmugam Abdullah, 41, a former Kedah police officer, was said to have stopped his schizophrenia medication since February.

00:01A police inspector, accused of deliberately ramming a traffic policeman with his car,
00:06has been ordered by the court to undergo a mental examination
00:09after his lawyer revealed the accused suffers from schizophrenia.
00:13The Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur issued the order on Thursday,
00:16directing 41-year-old Muhammad Kamal Raj Shanmugam Abdullah,
00:20a former officer with the Kedah police contingent,
00:23to be examined at Hospital Bahagya Uluquinta in Tanjong Rambutan.
00:27The order was made following an application by defense counsel G. Nanda Goban,
00:31who cited his client's history of schizophrenia
00:33and argued that a mental examination was necessary
00:36to determine whether the accused was fit to stand trial.
00:39According to Nanda, his client had been receiving follow-up treatment
00:42and was stable as recently as February this year,
00:45but stopped taking his medication after that.
00:47His father had even lodged a police report prior to the incident,
00:51requesting that his son be taken to hospital, but the accused fled.
00:55The main charge relates to an incident on April 10th at 10.47pm
00:59along Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra in Kuala Lumpur.

01:09while the officer was on traffic duty.
01:11The constable sustained injuries to his hand,
01:14the back of his head and his ribs.
01:16When the charge was read out to him in court,
01:19the accused responded that he was suffering from black magic
01:22and could not remember.
01:23The charge is framed under Section 307 of the Penal Court,
01:27which carries a prison term of up to 10 years
01:29and a fine upon conviction.
01:31No bail was granted and the case was fixed for mention on May 14th.
01:36Separately at the magistrate's court,
01:38Muhammad Kamal was accused of reckless and dangerous driving,
01:41this time along Jalan Loke U,
01:42at 4.10pm on April 13th.
01:45No plea was recorded
01:46and the same mental examination order was applied.
01:49The court also noted that six other cases involving the accused
01:52are pending with no bail granted across the board.
