Chinese President Xi Jinping has met with Vietnam's newly elected President To Lam, calling for more cooperation. To Lam's unanimous election by Vietnam's National Assembly in April represents a major consolidation of power, as he also holds the position of general secretary of the Communist Party.

00:17two countries' biggest common interest is defending Communist Party rule. To Lam is also
00:22the general secretary of Vietnam's Communist Party. His becoming president is a rare consolidation
00:27of power holding top positions in both the party and the government. This is his first
00:32trip abroad since he was elected in early April.
