02:12tell them when you have it.
02:13Is there anyone now that is able to come get a de-symulator?
02:16No, we don't know.
02:19On the critical care desk, clinicians can listen in to the most serious calls.
02:25Right, listen, I'm going to tell you how to give mouth to mouth, okay?
02:29Critical care paramedic Alastair is immediately dispatched to the patient.

03:53Thankfully, that was a good outcome for that child, not a cardiac arrest.
03:57I do believe he's had some kind of febrile convulsion.
04:00The crew have advised you were not required.
04:02If I need you for anything, I'll give you a ring.

07:22been vomiting yeah okay have you been able to keep anything down no no radio or very weak well do
07:35you an

11:15you got it
11:191705 go ahead
11:221705 hi it's Katie just wanting to get an update on the patient please how is Dale doing
11:28hiya Katie yeah Dale's been quite unwell um he's missed his dialysis for a couple of days
11:34because he's been vomiting he's been quite lethargic uh mom was really concerned um so she rang when
11:40uh he became a little bit confused uh good thing she did with because when we got there he was
11:45showing signs of um high potassium so uh he was at massive risk of going into cardiac arrest
11:51um we've taken him through to recess now um icu have come down already and had having a look at
11:57him
11:58so icu might be the best place for him quite close to home for me because

13:13covert as well so couldn't go and see him and he passed away before i really knew what was happening
13:20it's a shame you weren't able to fly over yeah cover
13:27let's go get a cup of tea yeah cool let's do it
13:39i think as a bloke sometimes emotionally we don't deal with what's going on in the background
13:45you know the baggage becomes quite heavy um until you get to the point where
13:49it's overflowing and your whole world comes crumbling down on you
13:53i think i have a problem that i don't do good like talking about emotions and that
13:57i don't know whether these shoe boxes i put the shit in and put it back on the shelf
14:04people deal with grief in different ways
14:09um it's the little things that can trigger it and come out of the blue
14:15my dad dying has definitely been life-changing for me
14:22it's always with you i'm proud sure of that thanks bro no worries it's wrong going to costa and

15:07to give the
15:08maximum time frame of up to two hours sorry with all ambulances across the region currently assigned

40:07so what do you do for a living i'm a health and well-being officer
40:11oh yeah so how is your health and well-being being if you get a bit of rapport with people
40:25they're a little bit more open about what's happening with them it is important to encourage
40:31people to talk there's always something else going on in the background we're all dealing with stuff
40:39it is life-changing isn't it yeah you must have been in a right state when you went to leeds
40:45is the morphine kicking in yet i think so because i feel a bit like it good

43:12oh imagine being in a car crash like that and then she remembers it being um so painful

44:59to feel a bit better is that because you've seen us two yeah
45:05do you have diabetes any heart problems at all no nothing like that no it's mainly anxiety and
45:11depression and i've got underactive thyroid yeah i've normally been well

46:24well yeah she does doesn't she i've been i've been well you know i've been through it just these past
46:31few weeks don't yeah no you don't need any more i lost my sister last year you gave me a
46:38scare
46:39you gave me a scare because i just thought it's happening to chris now you know it's the anxiety
46:45of it all isn't it but i won't you know that's what friends are for
47:04well welcome to our office
47:08i'm a very independent person i know but sometimes you've got to depend on somebody even if it's for
47:14a couple of hours yeah let us look after you it's our job to look after you have a seat
47:20on this one
47:21i'm gonna hear a plan
47:26i feel like crying because i'm all just let it go chris just let it go i know let it
47:32go if you want to
47:33cry everyone has a story sometimes something that they've experienced in the past can resurface when
47:43they feel stressed it can manifest in physical symptoms your brain controls everything have you
47:52had anxiety most of your life i think so it's got worse as i've got older yeah yeah it might
48:02be because
48:02you know the good and the bad of the world and maybe you've experienced loss in your life that's
48:09making you more anxious than usual because grief can hold into you i did hold on to grief for a
48:18long time
48:21i lost a child when i was younger and that comes out every so often
48:31everyone has trauma in their lives and at some point everyone does need to face it
48:37and somehow deal with it so you're only a young girl aren't you yeah how old do you think i
48:44am
48:45this are 20s i'm 30 next month oh yeah you are a little spring chicken oh no do you know
48:53i didn't
48:53really want to be 30 i hated it felt really hard you funny say that i'm looking forward to my
48:5930s
48:59but that's only because i hated my 20s did you yeah yeah this proves you just see somebody in the
49:05street and there's things going on other people's life i'm feeling better than i did good because
49:13we've talked haven't we yes yeah
49:20you never really know what someone's actually going through until you go in there and you find out
49:35i'm doing surveys for patient breathing it's struggling to breathe all right did you tell me
49:42exactly what's happened well we have cancer a moment it's throwing up a load of blood right okay
49:50that helps being organized so you get you doing really well okay you'll stay on the line with me
50:00that's what i'm saying yeah that's all i see thank you father has he got any pain yeah
50:14it's all cancer he's got so right okay you're still vomiting thank you he's just done it again now
50:22that's quite a lot that's coming up
50:24pull the ladder we can't think it's in you now all right daddy i'll leave you with them
50:35do you do it
50:36hi mate
50:39are you your dad okay yeah i got uh very late stage bowel cancer
50:45god john i'm alistair can i just ask um in terms in terms of what you want and where where
50:52this
50:52where you're going what what are you is it plan to stay at home and and be managed at home
50:57okay
51:04okay and this blood you're bringing up at all when did you start doing this when you start
51:07up front of this blood when he came when he came so he was not full of blood before this
51:12this is
51:12the first time today that's happening yeah and john your biggest concern at the moment is it the
51:16pain or is it the vomiting blood it's all right don't have a lot oh it's all right
51:29so my plan is to have a conversation with gold line all right yeah maybe get some medication we
51:34can give you to stop that sickness but i think if it's bleeding we need to try and stop that
51:37out
51:38it's just to be quite sore yeah so okay hello hi there you're right this is john he's got bowel
51:45cancer and stage so it's on and daughter here so we seem to make them comfortable yeah yeah do we
51:50have some morphine for me i'll give you some sub cup how are you feeling hi john oh shit
52:00you feel sick at the moment john yeah hello my name's alistair i'm a private
52:05for the ox ambulance service i'm currently with a gentleman called jonathan i believe he's under
52:08your care um he's vomiting the blood he's regularly doing it now and i'm not convinced that hospital's
52:15a great place to go especially with him being so unwell and the potential possibility
52:19of things coming to an end in hospital i just wonder what we can try and do to help him
52:24basically
52:27that's perfect appreciate your help thank you cheers bye-bye
52:35so that's a liddick gold line she's going to phone both hospices and we'll see what we can do from
52:40there
52:40we'll try and see if there's any space to take him to our curio or manor lands yeah absolutely yeah
52:51what ever's happened internally is is probably going to be what would require would be surgical
52:57intervention but because of his cancer he won't survive it he won't go through that so when i do say
53:03that yeah i'm sorry and i don't know how quick that'll be or but we need to make them comfortable
53:09because he's in pain and distress and that's that's the idea of what we want to try and make sure
53:13that
53:13he's that we can support him that's that's that's what we can do so unfortunately we go from one level
53:19trying to prevent it and then now we're just trying to um okay i'm sorry but it's been quite sudden
53:26and
53:26that's one of the basics of expected the palliative later within last week and she says when it gets
53:33to the last few weeks then the things we put in place and i said well how will we know
53:38when it's
53:38the last few weeks and she said there are things we look for yeah so hospital's definitely not half
53:47the cards but i'd like to prevent that because they're going to bring the gunner they'll be able
53:51to support him comfortably but it's in a busy need apartment we don't want that okay but i'll try
53:56and prevent that at the best i possibly can you all right thank you very much we're going nowhere
53:59we're going to make sure he's looked after yeah how's your pain john
54:07not so bad cool so the morphine's working that's great that's fantastic
54:11did he make it
54:28what did you do for a career then yeah electrician all right that felt handy then in it
54:36yeah very handy almost got to offer that around in to
54:48hi tallister hi becky
54:54okay thank you we're pretty much prepped to go here so we'll um if you're happy to
54:58receive we'll uh head up to maricuri cheers becky thank you very much for your time bye-bye bye-bye
55:07so maricuri's accepted him so let's um get him on the ambulance

55:32we're done we're done now john all right i'll see you up there all right
56:18we'll all lose our parents at some points in life
56:21help i have done if something exciting happened in my life my dad would have been the first person
56:27that i picked the phone up to seeing his number on the phone and knowing he's never going to talk
56:33to
56:34quite tough other people are going through it as well we need to talk about things to get them off
56:44our
56:44chests so that we're in a good place to help the people around us all right good thanks for a
56:52good
56:52shift see you later hopefully by talking about my past traumas i can better help people than i'm going
57:01to as a paramedic
