05:52So looking at this K10,
05:53it was built to a super high-quality level.
05:55And I'm supposed to take this thing apart and make it better?
05:58It's kind of freaked me out.
05:59When I told Mizzilli I wanted to go all-electric with my K10,
06:02he said, I know the exact right guy for this, Rich Benoit.
06:07Internet famous for his YouTube channel, Rich Rebuilds.
06:11I checked it out, and right away I saw Mizzilli was right.
06:14This is the man for the job.
06:15because Rich seems to know almost everything about electric drivetrains
06:19and because he also seems completely out of his mind.
06:23I knew Rich would be a good fit for this build.
06:25His company has a garage in New Hampshire where they'll do all the work.
06:28Dave Weber is my partner at Dream Cars.
06:30Dave is a master mechanic.
06:31But like I said, we haven't done a lot of EV swaps,
06:34so we're going to learn a lot from Rich on this one.
06:36And size-wise, what are we looking at for the electric motor?
06:39Half the size, maybe the third to the side of this.

06:42How big are the batteries, roughly?
06:44Let's just say 150 to 200 miles of range.
06:46You need about an 85-kilowatt-hour battery pack.

07:46Quieter, zero emissions, but just as powerful.
07:51That's the challenge for Rich and his team.

09:50To go in and do anything to this just feels wrong.
09:52But I also just like those old big trucks.
09:55So to see one of those rolling around as EV would be really cool.
09:59Let me give you a basic rundown of the game plan.
10:01Here's our K10 pickup truck.
10:03Four-wheel drive.
10:04Completely tricked out.
10:05Currently, it has a big supercharged engine and an automatic transmission.
10:09Obviously, that's coming out.
10:10The exhaust system and the fuel tank are also going away because electric vehicle doesn't
10:14need gasoline or pump out exhaust.
10:16Now, our basic plan for replacing the powertrain is an electric motor from Tesla that will send
10:20power to all four wheels.
10:22Now, batteries are powering the motor, but those batteries are heavy and take up lots
10:25of space.
10:26To fit them in the truck, they'll be split between two boxes.
10:29Where to put the batteries is typically the trickiest part of converting a gas car to
10:32to an electric car.
10:40I think I just got a four-pan screw under me.
10:43Ow.
10:44This truck is not going easy, is it?
10:46No.
10:46That's the deal with any of these custom jobs.
10:49This stuff is tucked in very neatly and cleanly.
10:51It knows what we're doing.
10:52There's no factory service manual telling me what the best procedure is.
10:56We're just going off of gut instinct here.

11:33So you told me that this idea to eco-mod your classic cars grew out of the footprint coalition.
11:38So how did the footprint coalition start?
11:44Like damn near everything in my life, it kind of started on a resentment.
11:49Tell you why.
11:50How did you first get involved in, like, caring about things?
11:54Because you're from Hollywood.
11:55You're not supposed to care about anything but yourself.
11:56Here's the story of how I started the footprint coalition.
11:59I was wrapping up my Marvel contract.
12:02Was it Iron Man that set you thinking about climate change, about the morality of technology?
12:07And so I kind of made all the similes between my journey in the Marvel universe, along with what's really
12:13happened with AI and robotics over the last 10, 15 years.
12:16And then I thought when I was doing this, I honestly should make some sort of commitment to the environment.
12:22In the Malibu fires, I had my hoses out trying to help my neighbor not lose his house.
12:27You kind of go, this is not the rhythm that was going on in California in the 80s or the
12:3290s.
12:33And so I got together with a bunch of super geniuses, and they said, you know, with AI and robotics,
12:39we probably could clean up the planet in two years.
12:42I said, well, let's do it.
12:43Let's start a coalition and let's get it done.
12:47And understandably, everybody started backpedaling.
12:49Well, it might be more like 10.
12:51You know what?
12:52I mean, look, really what we're doing right now, and they went into their story, and I felt a little
12:59pissed off, not at them, just at the inefficiency of the human experience.
13:13And so I thought, well, I'm just going to say that I'm going to do something about this.
13:17I said, I'm starting a coalition.
13:20And I was like, what is a coalition?
13:21We wanted to start it with a nonprofit and science work.
13:24The parts that came later were venture capital, which has been really awesome and productive, and the media part.
13:30Yes!
13:31When I look back to three years ago, soon after I said, I'm going to start the footprint coalition, about
13:36a week later, I was like, dude, what have you done?
13:38But it's going strong.
13:38As a matter of fact, it was the whole impetus for this show, in that there's more than one way
13:44to address the problem.
13:46We shouldn't have to give up too much.
13:47So classic cars are a great place to start.
13:53You got some work done, didn't you?
13:55Oh, yeah, you did.
13:56Look at this.
13:57Yeah, it just clears, too.
13:59So the build's coming along pretty well.
14:00Brian made brackets for the electric power steering pump and the AC compressor.
14:04Chad mounted the coolers for the batteries and the other components that get hot.
14:08And in order to mock up the driveline to understand how that will all fit, we need to know where
14:12the front battery box is going to be.
14:19Ah, just too short.
14:21As good as my CAD is on the computer, there are things that it doesn't factor in, and it doesn't
14:27necessarily capture what it really looks like in the car.
14:30So we are now going to switch to the other CAD, which is cardboard-aid design.
14:35He's really doing it.
14:37Overall, it's going to be a lot easier than trying to figure it out with full-size, full-weight components.
14:42This is a big-ass box, Brian.
14:44It does have to fit eight modules in it.
14:47And that should do it.
14:52It looks like this is almost the ideal height right here.
14:55Now we're installing 16 battery modules into the truck.
14:58That's 85 kilowatt hours of energy storage.
15:01Now these 16 modules will be split between a front and a rear battery box.
15:05The rear battery box will be disguised as the kind of toolbox that you see in a lot of pickup
15:09trucks.
15:10And the front battery box will go right over the motor in the engine compartment.
15:13They have a way of just fitting under the hood.
15:15It's sitting a little high in this corner.
15:17On that corner, yes.
15:18So I'll have to push it back up.
15:19You want me to get something to block it back up?
15:21Rich is like, let me get in.
15:23This is about where I want it.
15:26Every single time I jump into one of these conversions, there's always a little bit of pressure.
15:31You'd always want to make a great product for the customer and make sure everything's looking really good.
15:36That's better.
15:37It's like five, ten times that with this.
15:40This engine compartment has no place to hide anything.
15:42Yeah, it's out in the open, right.
15:44And the DC to DC doesn't look pleasing.
15:47No, it's not a very attractive part at all.
15:48Yeah, it's not an attractive part.
15:54An electric vehicle, just like a gas-powered vehicle, it's got a radio, headlights, windshield wiper, backup camera, and all
16:00sorts of other goodies that run on, of course, electricity.
16:03But that can't suck on the 400 volts coming from the big battery that powers the drive units.
16:10That's where the DC to DC converter comes in.
16:13It steps the voltage down from 400 to the 12-volt standard that powers all your accessories.
16:20So, I was thinking about hiding it underneath the battery tray.
16:22You're going to have like a bracket that does this almost?
16:24Yeah.
16:24Like a kind of one there and one there.
16:26Yeah, some angle iron brackets and some stiffening plates, which should be fine.
16:31How should I cut this?
16:32How do you feel about using the plasma cutter?

17:02Behold, the plasma cutter, which uses a jet of hot plasma to cut electrically conductive materials.
17:09It was developed in the 1950s, largely due to the support of the armed forces and a newly formed agency
17:16called NASA.
17:18It's amazing how many things we use on a daily basis that grew out of the work of military engineers.
17:25And it's that history of innovation that found me driving deep into the Mojave to visit Fort Irwin,
17:32a 1,000 square mile base in the middle of the desert where the Army conducts training exercises.
17:39I wanted to see and hear firsthand how the Army is anticipating the future in this era of changing energy
17:46technology and extreme weather events around the world.

18:18We've got a lot of great options with new vehicles coming online and new ways to provide power on the
18:23battlefield.
18:23The Army is planning for the future and exploring all sorts of new energy and resource-efficient technology.
18:29At Fort Irwin, they've made great progress with water treatment and conservation.
18:3495% of our water is recycled.
18:36They even have a self-sustaining solar-powered hospital.
18:39This is our lead platinum hospital.
18:42It's the highest possible rating for energy efficiency.
18:45Not only can we power the hospital, but we're going to get to the point pretty soon where we can
18:49power big chunks of the community as well.
18:51That is so badass.
18:53Yeah.
18:53Today, I'm here to see their new all-electric tactical utility vehicle.
18:58And you might even get a chance to drive it.

19:13I got Colonel Chris Vitale here from the Army's Climate Change Division.
19:17And he's going to talk to us about what we're doing for the future.

19:21Robert, so I'm the director for the Army Climate Change Office.
19:24When has there been a climate change initiative or even branch?
19:28Within the last year and a half to two years, the office has been in existence.
19:34What we're responsible for is the coordination and oversight for the Army's climate change strategy.
19:38A lot of people probably don't know that the Army has a climate change strategy.
19:42Sure.
19:43Today, no nation can find lasting security without addressing the climate crisis.
19:49The impacts of climate change can be an issue for national security or operational security.
19:55So the Army Climate Change Strategy is designed to produce effects that build resilience for the Army as a whole.
20:03The ability to provide self-generation of power, storage, to be able to run a base in the face of,
20:09say, a disruption to the microgrid from a weather event or potential effects from adversaries.
20:15And so what we're going to show you today is a piece of that climate strategy.
20:19Great.
20:19And that's the vehicle electrification pathway.
20:21This is the direction we're going.
20:23It's obviously a tactical advantage to not have to rely on the old-school chain of supply issues.
20:29Exactly right.
20:29If you don't have fuel to move, we don't have a supply chain vulnerability problem.
20:34The benefits are pretty profound.

20:38And this is Mr. Steve Dumont, the president of GM Defense.

20:43This is the Army's newest vehicle.
20:45It's the infantry squad vehicle.
20:48It's designed for the Airborne Brigade Combat Teams.
20:50The mission of GM Defense is to bring commercial technology into the defense and government marketplace to harness a big
20:59investment that the commercial marketplace is making in cutting-edge technology and doing it in a way that benefits a
21:05warfighter.
21:08It's airborne deployable.
21:10We parachuted it out of a C-130 and a C-17.
21:14This provides tactical mobility.
21:17This is internal combustion engine powered.
21:19Shortly after the Army bought this vehicle, we developed this.
21:22Look at this.
21:23It's the electric infantry squad vehicle.
21:26It's got an electric motor in it.
21:27It's got a battery pack in the back.
21:29This is so cool.
21:31Performance is incredible.
21:32So the infantry squad vehicle, or ISV, started its life as a Chevy Colorado.
21:39It's got commercial DNA.
21:42We are in the midst of a $35 billion investment in a more electric, autonomous, and connected future.
21:48We're going to take a lot of those vehicles now that are internal combustion engine powered and turn them into
21:53electric vehicles.
21:54The Army is on a journey.
21:56It's a journey to understand how to smartly use this new technology.
22:00First and foremost, it has to give them competitive advantage on the battlefield.
22:04The tactical benefit of electric vehicles are, first, it's acoustically near silent.
22:11It doesn't have an engine that makes noise like a traditional vehicle does.
22:16Furthermore, as a former attack pilot, everything that I targeted, I used the thermal signature to target.
22:22That goes away with an electric vehicle.
22:25You don't have a hot engine.
22:26You don't have a hot hood from the radiated energy.
22:29You don't have a hot exhaust system.
22:31And, oh, by the way, they deliver more power than ice-powered vehicles.
22:35It's an incredibly important part of the future arsenal that the United States Army has.
22:42I will exercise some restraint.

22:58If you have mission systems, radios, surveillance systems, you have all the power you need.

24:03Driving that ISV, I couldn't help but think about how the Jeep and the Humvee are military
24:08vehicles that became popular consumer cars, and now that type of innovation is happening
24:14in reverse, a vehicle created for the military from the bones of a Chevy production model.
24:20I smell innovation.
24:22Yeah.
24:22And this electric version of the ISV was born of the same question that I'm asking with
24:27my K-10, can you electrify a super-powered vehicle without sacrificing performance?
24:32I have to say I'm really encouraged because clearly the Army believes the answer to that
24:37question is absolutely.
24:39And that's really saying something when you think of what the Army asks of its vehicles.

26:09So it looks like in this truck with its frame, the likely spot for the motor is here.
26:15Except the drive shaft to the transfer case, the thing that distributes mechanical power
26:18from the motor to both the axes and the 4x4, the drive shaft isn't going to clear the
26:23fat end of the motor on its way to the transfer case.
26:25Now, the guys can try to slide it around and make it work, but it's pretty crowded down
26:29there, and it's also a very skinny frame to begin with.
26:32Every time we try to put something in here, it gets worse.
26:36This is the problem doing stuff that's never been done before.
26:40With this build, we thought there was going to be a lot of clearance around everything
26:44because it's just a huge truck.
26:46And then it turns out we don't have any room.
26:49Nothing fits because it's a narrow frame.
26:54Just for the hell of it, spin it.
26:58Change all the angles.

27:17We have clearance for the diff now, for the front diff.
27:20The driveline angle is better and shorter.

27:32So when you turn the motor around, they're right.
27:34It does fit.
27:35But now, since it's essentially in there backwards, in order to make the truck go forwards, the
27:40motor will be going in reverse.
27:42This is something I didn't even think about.
27:43Like, honestly, I'd never thought about reverse mounting one of these drive units, ever.
27:48Running the motor backwards, it fixes our dry shaft angle, our dry shaft length, the
27:52fitment of the drive unit.
27:53It seems like everything's getting fixed by flipping this thing around.
27:57So, look at this.

28:03Now, if I want to move this forward so it actually fits in the adapter hole, another good driveline

30:47And as soon as I turned 18, I bought a 1984 BMW E30.

31:04Actually, I just did 2 races before my combustion engine blew up.
31:08So I decided to realize this other idea that was flying in my head to make an electric car.
31:14So I bought like a forklift electric motor, some batteries, put it in the car.
31:20And at the beginning, the car was not that great.
31:23But after every race, I came back to the garage where I completely changed it every time.
31:28I replaced stuff which was off the shelf with things I built myself.
31:32And the car got faster and faster.
31:34And then in 2011, I broke 5 FIA in Guinness World Records for the fastest accelerating car with that BMW.
31:41But I had this idea of building a car from scratch.
31:45But cars have to be compelling.
31:47They are not just appliances.
31:49And I was asking myself, why is nobody using these advantages of the electric motor
31:53to make cars that are exciting, fun, beautiful.
31:57And that's what I wanted to do.
32:02I like that this is something that feels like I could get used to it.
32:06Forget the fact that this is a $2 million car.

32:10This could be a daily driver.

34:26I currently am getting our battery boxes assembled.
34:30These batteries, when they're all wired up in series, they're up at around 400 volt DC.
34:35Pretty scary stuff.
34:37These box assemblies keep everything secure, keep people out of them, and also keep water from getting in.
34:43As far as the EV conversion goes, it's electrical from here on out.
34:47I'm updating the truck's existing fuse boxes and assembling the wiring harnesses so we can get these battery boxes in
34:51here.
34:52Anytime you're dealing with EVs, you have high current draw, you're going to get electromagnetic interference.
34:57And data wires do not like being next to electric fields.

35:04Since the obvious place for the rear battery box is in the bed, we're going to go a little stealth
35:08and style it as if it was a toolbox.
35:11The diamond plate definitely makes it.
35:13In pretty much any work truck, there's that diamond plate toolbox.
35:16We definitely want to kind of mimic that same design here.

35:31Each of these 16 battery modules can store about 5 kilowatt hours of electricity.
35:36That's about 10 miles of range.
35:38So in total, 85 kilowatt hours of battery is approximately 150 miles of range.

36:08Lighter colors on cars reflect about 60% of sunlight, which translates into the cabin staying 5 to 6 degrees.
